Book Description
If you are a girl or young woman who has an interest in science or think you might, this excellent guide, full of highly useful information, will start you on the path toward realizing your career dreams. Are you planning a career in the sciences, math, or technology? Do you think that math and science are only for boys? Well, think again. Long gone are the days when only boys could dream of a career as an astronaut or a physicist. If you're a girl, now is the time to begin contemplating a career in these areas. It is estimated that by the year 2010 the need for qualified personnel in math, science, and technology careers will increase dramatically. Yet right now only 16 percent of women are involved in science and engineering careers despite the fact that women make up 45 percent of the total labor force. All this means that opportunities abound for women in the sciences.
This upbeat, very useful resource guide will give young women everything they need to start exploring and planning a career in science, math, or technology.
Part I introduces girls to the many exciting career opportunities available in the sciences and provides specific strategies for overcoming obstacles and planning for a future career in these areas.
Part II recounts heartening personal stories of girls and young women in the sciences, detailing how they got involved and what they have been able to achieve. These girls share how, with a little guidance and a lot of perseverance, they are now accomplishing more than they ever knew they could.
Part III offers timelines of extraordinary women throughout history and inspiring quotations. Everyone recognizes the famous men of scientific history, but readers will be amazed at how many female role models abound for girls contemplating careers in all branches of the sciences. Valuable thoughts on keeping a personal journal of progress and achievements are also in this section.
Part IV concludes the book with a list of Web sites specifically geared toward women in the sciences, suggestions for science-oriented computer software, and many other helpful resources.

Women Confronting Retirement: A Nontraditional Guide
Manufacturer: Rutgers University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0813531268 |
Book Description
Women Confronting Retirement showcases the voices of thirty-eight women from a wide range of professions, ages, and life situations as they confront the need to redefine who they are when they leave the workplace. The women of the Baby Boom generation were the first to enter the professional world in large numbers, and the first such generational cohort to encounter the challenges of retirement. The contributors urge women to reach for different approaches to this major stage of life, to find new self-images, to balance meaningful work and creative play, and to reform public policies to support enhanced opportunities for retirement. Many of these women were involved in the key activist movements of the sixties and seventies, and their work has often been an extension of their social commitment. Defining themselves through their careers, they have confronted traditional models at every stage of their lives and are now confronting their own negative stereotypes about retirement. The stories in this book compellingly chronicle the fears and hopes of women who have only begun to think about retirement, those who are in the process of retiring, some who have been retired for several years, and a few who have decided that retirement is not for them. Unlike traditional "how-to" books, Women Confronting Retirement makes clear that there are no right or wrong answers to the many questions this uncharted stage of life poses for women of the Baby Boom generation and those who follow. These women help us explore the next steps with the same courage they brought to every aspect of their lives before reaching retirement age.

How to Read Copy: Professionals Guide to Delivering Voice-Overs and Broadcast Commercials
Adrian Cronauer Manufacturer: Bonus Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Customer Reviews:
Get the Basics First.......2000-05-10
A Bit Fussy For My Taste.......2000-03-26
Cronauer provides an audio cassette accompanying the text, and the reader is periodically asked to stop reading the book and listen to a specific cut on the tape. Unspecified but dire consequences are promised to anyone who continues to read without listening to the designated audio cut, or who dares to listen to more then one cut at a time. Only about half the cuts make points that are not already self-evident from the text.
The book correctly emphasizes the need to sound relaxed and conversational in voiceover work, and provides a number of specific, if dogmatic, rules for how to deal with particular issues in spokes copy. Yet the reader is left with the vaguely dissatisfied sense that something is missing. With all the rules about what not to do, or where and where not to place emphasis, there seems little room for personality to enter the work. Although the author lionizes voiceover legends such as Mason Adams (even reproducing a "Smuckers" ad on the accompanying cassette), he provides no real clue to what makes such people so successful.
It's as if the whole is less than the sum of its parts. There is value here, if the reader is willing to persevere through the minutiae of when to emphasize personal pronouns, how to handle definite and indefinite articles, how to distinguish function words from content words, when to end a question with an up-inflection versus a down-inflection, and so on. But such mastery may have limited real-world value in today's voiceover market, because straight spokes copy is not as common now as it once was.
Bottom line: An interesting book, but probably not a "must-have."

Customer Reviews:
The true people's history of the mines.......2000-03-13
For the person not familiar with the mines and miners of Bolivia this is an excelent introduction. Here one meets a world turned upside down and inside out. Mountains are filled with spirits and miners, men ans women - side by side - fight for a better life. June enables one to share in the peoples' long history of struggle through insightful first hand accounts. She also shares her personal experience while reporting the stories and brings a more human element to the work.
June has done an excellent job identifyng and bringing to light the intricate web of cultural, political, and economical elements of Bolivian mining. I myself have relatives from the mining regions of Bolivia and wish to congratulate June on her depth and understanding of the people she presents. It is rare to find someone that has the ability to understand the cultural nuances that have a 5,000 year old tradition and see how the still prevail, albiet sometimes hidden or changed, in today's world. I wish to congratulate her on taking the time to understand the people she was studying and not perpetuating common stereotypes, of disorder, ignorance or misbegotten religious views.
I highly recommend this book to all!
The Horrors and Triumphs of the Bolivian Tin Mines..........2000-02-02
I found Nash's depiction of the Bolivian tin miners excellent. Not only did the author manage to complete a traditional anthropological ethnography, but she has presented it in a format which has made it interesting to anyone.
This book should be read by anyone studying or interested in Anthropology, inequality, or the trials and triumphs of Latin America...

The Reproduction of Social Control: A Study of Prison Workers at San Quentin
Barbara A. Owen Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275928187 |
Book Description
Based on interviews with 125 prison workers and participant observation, this in-depth study examines the prison worker's world as a foundation for a theory of social control. By analyzing the intricate relations among the workers themselves rather than among the prisoners, Barbara Owen posits that social control arises through the combination of interaction, power, and meaning. Owen argues that the motives of workers are practical, rather than pathological as suggested by earlier research. She focuses her study on the social context of the prison shop floor--challenging the accepted idea that prison work is difficult because of the prisoners. The findings indicate that the problems of the prison workers are structurally induced and arise from interaction with co-workers rather than with prisoners.

Multicultural Counseling Competencies: Assessment, Education and Training, and Supervision (Multicultural Aspects of Counseling And Psychotherapy)
Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0803972229 |
Book Description
"Multicultural Counseling Competence represents the next giant step toward implementing multicultural standards into the counseling profession. Logically organized and with a list of impressive contributors, . . . this book not only is well grounded in theory and research but is a practical guide to how graduate schools of counseling, clinical psychology, social work, and other helping professions might infuse multicultural competence into their faculty and students, curriculum, field work, and supervision. . . . The editors have made a major substantive contribution to the counseling profession with this text. They have accepted the challenge of cultural diversity and are serving the roles of pioneers in seeking both individual and institutional multicultural competence." --from the Foreword by Derald Wing Sue Professional associations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association are beginning to mandate cultural counseling competencies in their ethical guidelines. That is, counselors who work with ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse clients must be multiculturally competent. How can multicultural competency be assessed in counselors? How can these competencies be acquired? In this volume, a cast of leading researchers and educators in multicultural counseling and psychology addresses the issues of what makes a counselor multiculturally competent and how to create more culturally competent counselors. Multicultural Counseling Competence considers ways to evaluate counselors for their awareness, knowledge, and skills in working with a broad spectrum of populations. Chapters also examine at length the pedagogical implications of establishing competencies, including training philosophies and models as well as course and curriculum development. Likewise, a group of contributors consider the impact that multiculturalism has on supervision and the theories and strategies that supervisors can use to ensure a culturally competent clinical environment. A cornerstone volume, Multicultural Counseling Competence pulls together the essence of issues facing the establishment of competencies. Counseling educators and supervisors especially will want to use this book to ensure that their programs help counselors become more culturally aware and serve all clients with efficiency and respect.
