Book Description

Ideal for anyone embarking on or considering a career in human services, counseling, psychology, social work, or any of the other helping professions, this book provides an overview of the stages of the helping process, as well as the skills and knowledge required to be a successful helping professional. Drawing on their years of experience, the Coreys focus on the struggles, anxieties, and uncertainties one encounters on the road to becoming an effective helper. The book emphasizes self-reflection on a number of professional issues and challenges the reader to examine their motives for choosing a helping career, and takes a candid look at the demands and strains they'll face in the helping professions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2001-01-25

This book was the text my instructor assigned in an interpersonal communication class I took a few years ago. It is very readable, as are all books by the Coreys. It covers a wide range of topics and it uses case examples to illustrate the points. It isn't a counselling book in terms of having alot of exercises on questioning or empathy. It does discuss counselling skills, but it is more concerned with the worker's personal development, in terms of ethics, self-awareness, self-care, etc. The suggested activities at the end of the chapter really help the learning process. My only criticism of the book is that a few of the chapters are a tad long.

        Book Description

"I found a lot to learn from reading the book. . . . After an excellent overview chapter that introduces the main theories of career development and outlines many of the factors that affect career development, chapters 2 and 3 focus on the use of assessment in career counseling. Chapter 2 in particular provides numerous insights into the contribution psychological tests make to career counseling, but not without making it clear that testing has its limitations. It is probably the best short introductory chapter on psychological testing that I have read. In particular, . . . it offers very useful guidelines as to what best practicing in testing involves. . . . The book must have been thoroughly revised, since the great majority of the references mentioned in the text post-date that edition." --Jennifer M. Kidd in British Journal of Guidance and Counselling Providing a comprehensive approach to career counseling, this volume integrates the career counseling process into the life span ranging from early childhood through older adulthood. For each stage, the author explores emotional, physical, and mental development factors. The author also provides suggestions, techniques, and case studies for counseling clients at each of these stages. Two chapters cover the uses and types of various assessment instruments; a critique of the instruments' applicability to the counseling process is also included. Using a life-span framework, the author also discusses years of identification and differentiation, years of growth and searching, years of realism and separation, years of compromise and commitment to a lifestyle, and more. The book closes with a case analysis suitable for class work in career development or related course. Career counselors, guidance counselors and those interested in counseling psychology, educational psychology, and the human services will find Developmental Career Counseling and Assessment to be an invaluable guide to the field. About the first edition: "Career counselors will appreciate the thoroughness of the book, and also the up-to-date research information which focuses on minorities and women's issues. The text, directed mainly towards the professional, would be an excellent resource for any career library." --Career Planning & Adult Development Newsletter "Linda Seligman has written an exceptional book which provides a comprehensive overview of the career counseling process from a developmental perspective. Her treatment of assessment in the counseling process adds significantly to the literature of the field. It is cogently written and balanced and contains a wealth of information. Recognizing that whole books have been written on material Seligman covers in a chapter, she makes each sequence count. If I were to recommend one book on career counseling for both the beginning as well as the more seasoned professional, this would be it." --Career Media

4 out of 5 stars Provides an essential view of career counseling.......2004-07-14

As an instructor of career counseling, it has been difficult to find a volume that covers the field sufficiently. Until now. This book is outstanding. It is extremely thorough and well written. The only issue is that it is about 10 years old. An updated edition would make this the perfect text for a master's level course is career counseling. Each chapter ends with an excellent case example that my students have found to be enlightening!

5 out of 5 stars Stressful Lives of Teens.......2000-04-27

First off, I gave this book to my cousin as a birthday present. I remember the time when I was a teenager and some of the issues and concerns I dealt with , as many young people do today; some more life-altering than others; i.e. drugs and alcohol, depression, suicide and family upheavals as well as gun violence. I found the book to be very user-friendly and read the book at our local library. The discussions suggested within the book are helpful in leading pointed, educational sessions with teens and would be great for counselors and teachers alike. And the fact in is for grades 7-12, makes it a great resource to the mental health and self-help communities.

I have this book and use it as a school social worker a lot with my 5th and 6th grade students. I'd say it is appropriate for 5th through 12th. When I don't have time to plan I grab this book! There are detailed lessons for discussing lots and lots of important topics. The other "Talk with Teens" book is also very good. I recommend them both!

          5 out of 5 stars teen groups.......2000-06-28

Talk with Teens is an interesting and helpful book for people who work with teen groups or who would like to. It is written in an easy to read format, helpful to a layperson, counselor, or social worker. Great tips are given on setting up new groups and following through. Topics, questions and worksheets are helpful to those who are already doing groups and need something different.

          Book Description

Richard Sharf goes beyond simply presenting theory to show the reader how to apply the principles in a counseling setting, making this book useful for both practicing counselors and counselors-in-training. Sharf covers three major theoretical areas (trait and type, life-span, and special-focus theories) in Parts I-III, then discusses theoretical integration in Part IV, with each theory providing a unique perspective on career development. In addition, the book offers numerous case examples, discusses career testing from a practical and theoretical perspective, and integrates labor-market information with career theory.
