Customer Reviews:
Not of much value........2007-06-12
Very little useful information. If you planning a home theatre this book really doens't offer any information on design or component integration. Very basic in it's approach with references to VCR's and other dated technology.
Great pocket book.......2007-01-17
As an proffesional I apreciate this book, it gives precise information. It is well written and on plain english as it's posiblle.
I recomending this book!
Very Useful Reference.......2006-12-20
I bought this book as a quick reference for a Technical Support group I manage. We have a few dozen products that require an installer to run wires throughout a house. Unfortunately, a large majority of the calls I get are wiring related and this book provides tremendous insight into the problems created by improper wiring.
If you want to learn about wiring, this is the book to buy. I also bought the full book that goes with it. It must be good because I got the only paperback, and all the used hardback books are almost double the retail price.
From this guide you'll learn everything relating to wiring. You'll learn balanced vs unbalanced, ground loop isolation vs cross talk, and the list would almost be half as long as the pocket guide. Simply put, if your livlihood depends upon wiring, this book will help you a great deal.
So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind........2006-05-01
Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.
Nope, it's not for the "novis" but I believe a novice will find it interesting if you understand the concept that 2 wires make a circuit. Take your time with it and Google anything you don't understand. There are some complex topics in here but nothing you won't get your head around if you read it and think about it. It is presented in a good, logical progressive order.
Stephen makes it all readable with many interesting and amusing anecdotes and tidbits. The "Grounded Dog" story (p 363) is worth the price of the book alone.
I've been in broadcast Engineering for years and this book solved a few mysteries for me.
Check out the contents list to see if it's for you.
Not for the novis........2005-09-07
I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.
Book Description
Organized to serve as a resource for those just beginning to learn EEG as well as those who are already experienced, it contains concise presentations of the fundamentals of EEG technology and interpretation as well as an up-to-date review of the latest digital EEG technology and EEG clinical correlations. Unlike other EEG textbooks, the second half of this book is uniquely organized according to EEG findings rather than individual disorders. This is the best practical approach to learning interpretation because it mirrors the actual practice of EEG, the EEGer is confronted by EEG patterns, not diagnoses. Each chapter begins with a summary of major concepts. An overview of EEG can be quickly obtained by those beginning the study of EEG by simply reading the introductory summaries of all chapters before reading the

A classic in its kind.......2005-08-20
I have followed the three editions of this book from the positions of resident in Neurophysiology (edition 1981), "young specialist" in the field (edition 1993) and finally a consultant with some experience. Still it is a pleasure for me to read this book because of its very clear and logical approach. It will teach you to describe an EEG event, then to classify it, then to come to its diagnostic implications... Quite valuable for practicing EEGers. At the same time it gives you in concise form a lot of information you may fail to find even in a reference text. And there is the one author - one style advantage.
great book.......2002-01-27

Electrician's Troubleshooting... Good But,.......2000-03-26
I found the book usefull and full of good infromation. But... the book is not consistant in adressing the skill level of the reader. One moment it goes into great detail for the layman's comprehension. The next moment the book may give short diagnostic instructions, that only someone with a greater knowledge & skill level would undersand. Since the book is the size of a typical paperback, less than an inch thick, space limits it's content. The book would be better if it was more consistant with it's depth of explinations. And/or a terminology and skill glossary
Book Description
The immediacy and accessibility of video makes it an ideal medium for artists who want to work with sound and moving image; no sooner than video cameras were available to the public in the 1970s were artists already beginning to experiment with the possibilities of video. Though it took decades for it to be widely embraced by mainstream art, video is now firmly accepted as an important medium, thanks to the work of artists such as Matthew Barney, Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola, and Gillian Wearing.
Artists featured: Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Chris Cunningham, Matthew Barney, Fischli/Weiss, Gary Hill, Nan Hoover, Christian Marclay, Steve McQueen, Mariko Mori, Bruce Nauman, Tony Oursler, Marcel Odenbach, Nam June Paik, Pipilotti Rist, Sam Taylor-Wood, Bill Viola, Gillian Wearing.

Customer Reviews:
Basic book on how to program TPMs.......2007-09-26
The book may have some writing issues as Kinney writes in a very informal style. But engineers aren't known for their writing - they're known for building things. We are also known for being very critical.
Still, his book provides a basic background in trusted computing and the cryptography implemented using TPMs. It's main focus is explaining the various Trusted Platform Module (TPM) commands used within the TCG v1.1b spec. There is a chapter on some of the differences between v1.1b and v1.2. I would have liked to see some very basic c programs included to get a better feel of actually using the commands together. That would be my only real complaint.
The author does have some pride toward the product he helped develop. But from talk within the TCG community, he no longer works for Atmel, where he helped developed the TPM firmware. So he's not trying to sell anything he can profit from. I think he's just proud of his team's work.
One of the worst books I've ever read.......2007-06-01
Wow, where to start? I guess with the introduction that contains errors of fact - RSA does not stand for random scheduling algorithm. This gets the book of to a really bad start and it just lurches along from there. This book is just full of details without any relevant context. The first chapter tells what calls to use to initialize the TPM for memory present and memory absent implementations, but doesn't define the difference between memory present and memory absent and why you would choose one over the other. Let alone not providing a context chapter and jumping right into providing call details. The writing style is the most confusing thing that I have ever run across, with irrelevant clauses included that just confuse the situation. I had to read it with a pen and cross out all of the irrelevant parts and then re-read the paragraph in order to understand it. It's a stream of conciousness technical book. As hard as the TCG specifications are to understand, this book doesn't make them any easier. I was hoping for a guided trip through the architecture to prepare me for tackling the specifications. I think the specifications are easier to read directly than this book.
I've been in the computer industry 20 years and never have I encountered such a poorly written work.
Is this a first draft?.......2007-02-04
Wow. As an engineer, I've read some seriously bad writing, but rarely does a technical book plead so convincingly for review by a competent editor. The book is so littered with "with regards to," "relative to," "concerning," and "it is safe to say that," I'd swear it would shrink by half if only the author had the vaguest familiarity with the work of Professors Strunk and White. The passive voice has never found a more welcoming home. And you know you're in for a rough ride when you find the publisher's name misspelled on the very first page (it's "Newnes," not "Newness").
On top of that, the author insists on promoting his employer's products, and spends half a chapter ranting about "hackers" who levied "malicious attacks" on their Xboxes by installing Linux on them. Simply unprofessional.
As for content, the book promises early on to guide embedded systems developers in implementing TPM in their designs, but ends up devoting far more space to niggling protocol details than to suggestions on their use.
There's some good information buried somewhere in this book, but unless you have a babelfish handy, I'd recommend you hold your nose and read the freely-available TPM specifications rather than spending money on this volume.

Product Description
This class-tested book gives you a familiarity with electricity and electronics as used in the modern world of measurement and control. Integral to the text are procedures performed to make safe and successful measurements of electrical quantities. It will give you a measurement vocabulary along with an understanding of digital and analog meters, bridges, power supplies, solid state circuitry, oscilloscopes, and analog to digital conversions. This book is about behavior, not design, and thus lends itself to an easy-to-understand format over absolute technical perfection. And where possible, applications are used to illustrate the topics being explained.
The text uses a minimum of mathematics and where algebraic concepts are utilized there is sufficient explanation of the operation, so you may see the solution without actually performing the mathematical operations.
This book is student centered. It has been developed from course materials successfully used by the author in both a college setting and when presented as short course study classes by ISA. These materials have been successful because of the insistence on practicality and solicitation of student suggestions for improvements. Basic Electricity and Electronics for Control will enhance student success in any industrial or technical school setting where basic technician training is to take place.
Customer Reviews:
Very accessible by beginners.......2006-10-14
The third updated edition of Lawrence M. Thompson's BASIC ELECTRICITY AND ELECTRONICS FOR CONTROL: FUNDAMENTALS AND APPLICATIONS (155617988X) has been class tested and is an excellent primer for either classroom or on-job use. It covers behavior, not design - and it provides the basics of electricity as it's measured and controlled today. Chapters include procedures to make successful measurements of electrical quantities and by minimizing the amount of math calculations, are very accessible by beginners at either the college or work world level - though it's been developed from course materials and is written with students in mind.

Digital Filters
ASIN: 3540668411 |
Book Description
It is the aim of this textbook to give insight into the characteristics and the design of digital filters. It briefly introduces to the theory of continuous-time systems and the design methods for analog filters. Time-discrete systems, the basic structures of digital filters, sampling theorem, and the design of IIR filters are widely discussed. Important parts of the book are devoted to the design of non-recursive filters and the effects of finite register length. The explanation of techniques like oversampling and noise shaping conclude the book. It is completed by an annex containing a selection of tables of filter parameters for Butterworth, Chbeyshev, Cauer, and Bessel filters. Furthermore, several computer routines for filter design programs are given.
Customer Reviews:
Not good for engineer.......2003-08-05
This book may be useful for college students,
I found a lot of theoretical analysis in it.
But, if you are an engineer, and you want to find something
to guide you to design a digital filter, forget this one.
totally no help.
Covers everything, but still a little short.......2003-05-04
The difficulty comes really as a by product of the sheer size of the knowledge base in this subject. There are now so many papers published on each of the chapter headings that perhaps most writing projects of this sort would end up in an interminable fog.
But there is an urgent need for such books, now that almost anyone can afford a DSP development kit, and you can create the most astonishing filters with characteristics that would be unimaginable some 20 years ago.
But you would need help, and attempting to cover the whole field of design techniques is very difficult in a short time. Mind you, this book is by far one of the best I have ever seen. For instance, it covers the design of elliptic filters, though not really in the depth that you would need to be SURE.. pp27-33 is all there is here. But nontheless, I like the fact the the discussion isn't superficial, and that the sn function is drawn really well, and so on, but I think that more examples are really needed, and especially more help with translating requirments into actual elliptic filters.
There is a section on filter architecture, and this is quite separate from the section on the various low pass approximations. Some terrible books recently have been written in such a way as to mix the two subjects, which is always an invitation to disaster.
The section of Wave Digital filters is admirable. The work by Fetweiss has proved to be much more important than was suspected at the time, and there is some evidence that knowledge of wave digital filters is becoming desirable knowledge for some prospective employers, at least in the UK and Europe...
The idea of covering limit cycles is a brave move, considering how complicated and unnerving this may be for beginners. This is done very well. Even better are the chapters on fixed point roundoff noise - so very important to those of us without floating point hardware to hand! This chapter is superb, and really goes a LONG way toward helping solve real problems. This was my favorite chapter of all.
There is one deficiency in the book, and that is in design techniques where the phase alone is to be prescribed. This is a little alarming. All-pass filters are not even mentioned in the index - this might also cover the Hilbert transform for instance. Another class of filter not described are those filters which produce a pair of outputs with a quadrature relationship between them.
Neither is the subject of filterbank design covered at all (aka perfect reconstruction, and all that). But that's rather specialised.
I can't help but admire the book, and would only gently recommend to use it with other books which are perhaps more dilute in some ways, but perhaps in certain specialised areas, more replete with examples. But otherwise, do get it, since it's very unlikely that you won't be pleasantly surprised and very much informed by it.
The best in the topic!.......2001-02-07
This is the third book that I bought in digital filters within a short period of time. After I read the first two books, I did not feel comfortable with the subject. After I read this book in two days, I feel like I know which way to go. This book gives you the theoretical background, the design procedures, as well as implementation considerations. It seems that all my questions are answered.
This seems to be the first review of the book. This is also my first time to write a review on Amazon. I just want to share beauty of the book.

question to paulfer.......2001-09-28
Hey paulfer, what book would you recommend for a complete newbie that wanted to get started with multi-track recording?
Disappointing........2001-01-17
This book is a very quick read, and touches on the most general concepts of digital recording. It packs a lot of information for such a tiny volume (it's only slightly bigger than your wallet), but unfortunately this doesn't leave room for much detail. At best, this book would make a handy quick-reference to keep in your back pocket during recording sessions. But as others here have noted, this is not a book to recommend for newbies who really want to get their feet wet in the fast-moving world of digital recording.
It's good, but don't recommend it to a total newbie.......2000-10-03
Basic Digital Recording is essentially useful. I learned things I didn't know before, and it helped me solve a problem I was having, as well as another I hadn't recognized yet! It's important for me to establish this book's utility right from the start, because most of this review is going to focus on its shortcomings, the reasons for my having given it only a three-star rating. There are two general weaknesses: there are some gaps, and it's not graded. First, the gaps. The biggest omission occurs in the chapter on music software - there's lots about midi, but nary a mention of programs like Cakewalk, Cubase, Vegas, Cool Edit, etc - the software that anyone *not* using midi needs to know about. A beginner would get badly misled by this. When it comes to plug-ins, it talks about VST, but neglects to mention Direct-X, which are hugely useful and popular. Also, the book suffers from a lack of an index, and although there's a glossary, it is sometimes insufficient, not covering technical terms used in the book. Finally there's a less-than-useful British bias to it: it mentions sospubs.co, for instance, but none of the excellent US-based homerecording and professional recording websites. What's the internet for, if not easy access to international sites? As for it not being graded: it's not a course that takes you from zero knowledge to putting together your first demo in 100 graded steps and stages, making it a bit difficult to learn from sometimes. The first chapter, for instance, is very offputting, defining digital audio terms and equipment. If what you were trying to do was get a digital project studio started, you'd still be wondering where to start when you were on page 40 - it probably would have done better to start with the second chapter which covers different recording systems. And despite going to great lengths to define concepts and equipment, the book assumes some prior knowledge of audio recording. Sometimes it reminds me a bit of the all-too-common equipment manual which seems incomprehensible until you finally learn how to use the gear. I'm going to stop at this point, because I don't want to trash the book - that's why I gave it three stars, after all. It's useful, and I learned things from it, so I should sound more grateful perhaps. But I can't help thinking that as the 'basic' digital recording book which it claims to be, it could have been more user-friendly, especially with the beginner in mind.
Solid Technical Information.......2000-04-27
This book provides a good starting point for learning about digital recording. It has a few general chapters on digital music and recording systems and then becomes more specific when discussing soundcard studios, music computers and software and how to create an album.
I was completely behind the trend of digital music, but this book caught me up quickly.

Great intro to the analog vs digital world.......2000-10-03
An excellent introductory book describing the characteristics of digital transmission. I picked up this book based on the review from the Boston, MA reader with the expectation that it would provide me with the basics of digital transmission theory.
The topics are organized in logical order with the basics of signal transmission, conversion from analog to digital data streams, digital modulation, error correction, power measurements, and interference sources.
What really impressed me was the simple to understand descriptions and drawings used to convey the underlying theory without getting the reader bogged down in engineering type equations.
I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in a general understanding of digital signal applicaitons. Even though the book is geared towards cable TV, it provided me with a strong foundation in digital communications!
Tremendous resource for Analog and Digital Cable Test!.......1999-01-22
Digital Basics for Cable TV Systems is an extremely valuable source for learning about how Analog and Digital data is created and tested. The differences between Analog and Digital channels is described using very basic concepts. Complex modulation and measurement considerations are explained in an easy-to-understand format, with terrific examples. The test set-up procedures definitely help anyone who needs to learn how to test Cable systems with Analog and/or Digital Channels.
Explanations of the interractions between existing Analog and new Digital channels are very clear and relate well to the Cable TV population.
Digital Basics for Cable TV Systems is a great reference tool for teaching engineers and technicians!! The Chapter quizzes and summaries really help the reader to organize their learning and prove to themselves that they grasp the concepts. The Glossary provides definitions of all of the industry terms.
I read and learned from every chapter! I recommend this book to anyone who works with Analog or Digital Broadcast Systems--it is a MUST!
