Applying Career Development theory to Counseling.......2006-03-23
I was pleased with the product, however I was very disappointed that it took so long to be shipped to me. I got behind in my class readings because my textbook didn't get to me for over 2 weeks after I ordered it. Was that because I used the free shipping option?
Thank you.
Thanks.......2005-10-03
Exactly what I ordered, in great condition, and delivered in great time. Thanks
A wonderful book for beginners.......1999-10-06

The examples cited throughout the text offer students an opportunity ingest the course material and retain their newly found knowledge. Customer Reviews:
good information, tough reading.......2007-08-03
This is certainly a good textbook, but reading it was a real chore. The style is very dry and I had a really hard time maintaining my focus on the text. (The Amazon review claims that this book is "engaging" - um, no.) When I could stay focused, though, I learned quite a bit. Chapter 5 - Assessment and Career Planning - had the most useful info, with lots of assessments listed and their uses.
Good Career Counseling Overview.......2006-11-04
I used this as a textbook for my Career Counseling class (master's level). The book was a good overview of career counseling. I found it to be highly readable, well-written, and well organized.
Great text!.......2006-02-25
This book covers wide range of topics! I will definitely use it to study for the NCE!

Book Description
What are the individual and organizational influences on career choices and adult development?
Careers In and Out of Organizations provides an overview of the changing context of careers and describes the role of interpersonal relationships as influences on development of a person’s identity and learning. The author examines the nature of the new career contract and the different approaches that have been taken to studying career decision making. He explores how career choices are made, the developmental stages people pass through during the course of their working lives in organizations, and the factors related to career effectiveness including integrating career and personal life. The latter third of the book turns from research to the practical issues involved in applying theory including a look at how an understanding of career dynamics can be employed to make careers work better for individuals and for the work communities where they are employed.
Customer Reviews:
Where was the editor for this book?.......2007-05-02
As a professional writer myself, I admit that I have higher standards than most when reading books, but textbooks in particular seem to be getting worse, and this one is no exception.
While there is a lot of good information in this book, it's very redundant -- the same information is beaten to death. Ironically, the reverse is also true. Information, particularly graphics, are brought in to the mix but never discussed in any meaningful way (like the 'career involvement' graphic in chapter 6).
There is virtually no discussion about workers who are not in management -- the focus seems to be those people working in corporate America at a manager level or higher -- outside of talking about priests, there is little information on careers outside of this realm.
Additionally, I found the book to be quite sexist with a definite slant toward white male bias, especially in the passages that infer (if not outright state) that those who do not make Career (with a capital C) the primary focus of their lives are somehow inferior. This thinking is woefully outdated -- just ask any mom who works outside of the home, any adult taking care of an older parent, or anyone who is actively involved in their family or community.

Book Description
A college diploma can open many doors, but it's just an expensive piece of paper if you don't have what employers seek. Long-time professor and student adviser Bill Coplin surveyed the nation's top companies and identified the essential skills recent grads need to survive and succeed in the job market. In 10 THINGS EMPLOYERS WANT YOU TO LEARN IN COLLEGE, Coplin teaches you to solve complex problems, influence people, and detect BSreal-world know-how your textbooks don't teach you. Coplin's practical approach will help you develop a personal plan for boosting those marketable skills during your college years so you can impress potential employers, land a higher-paying job, and start on the road to career security and satisfaction as soon as you graduate.
Customer Reviews:
HEADS- UP; GETTING THE JOB!!!!!!.......2007-01-19
Want your children to succeed in the job market? Want to upgrade your own skills? This book offers much needed data about the value of work ethics, communication both verbal and written, working with others, influencing others, internships, building relationships. It is a job research primer. It also tackles the negatives of "helicopter parents" whose well-meaning attempts are often counterproductive to the individual learning process of the young adult trying to grow up and develop skills needed in the work force. Author Bill Coplin also explores time and money management, the interview process, identifying problems and developing solutions.
A timely and well-written perspective.
Developing the Complete Package.......2007-01-18
The book points out that college students need to develop real-world know-how in ten crucial skill groups:
Work Ethic
Physical Performance
Speaking
Writing
Teamwork
Influencing People
Research
Number Crunching
Critical Thinking
Problem Solving
A degree might get your foot in the door, but having these skills will make you a valuable employee. I agree with the author that if a work ethic is missing, then all the other knowledge and skills are wasted.
Apractical guide to being practical with your education.......2004-07-15
The book is a tremendous aid to help a college student, or for that matter any young man our woman get a leg up as they prepare for the real world they face outside of formal education. It addresses things that our formal education system misses. If you plan on working in a career, like most people, then you need this book to help you be prepared to face reallity of the work world. It suggests an investment of thought, time and energy but the payoffs will be worth it. Ask the HR people in your company if it is on target. My children will be reading it as they prepare to move into the "real world". Yours should too!
Good and bad.......2004-06-07
The description of this title does not exactly make clear what the book is about.
Part I - Know How Groups
Details specific skills in 10 groups by saying 1) why they're important 2) how college-level coursework can help you develop them, and 3) how activities, jobs, and internships can help you develop them.
Part II - What you should be doing in college to help yourself get a job/internship
Explains the idea of an apprenticeship, how to make college choices, volunteering, thinking BEYOND college, and more
Part III - Planning your success
More on careers, improving your "know how" skills, and how to use show off your know how skills in your resume and cover letter
Part I I found useful for some skills and a lot of fluff for others.
The explanation of the skill itself is mostly useless and consists principally of 1) a discussion of a rather irrelevant quote put at the top of each section, 2) how you might use it in a business/management type position. Of course that helps you out if you enjoy irrelevant quotations and are heading for a career in management, but be warned - this book was written for liberal arts majors. That is the type of student this author has had the most experience with and portrays most skills that are necessary for a position in sales, management, or some other business-oriented capacity. It's not for engineering majors.
Parts II and III I found very useful and eye-opening was the discussion of internships, jobs, and other activities outside of campus that comes after Coplin's foray into "know how groups." It details how you can use your connections and campus/online resources to find a career-starting experience at a relevant company. It also sheds some light on the internship experience and why it's important to "pay your dues."
If 1) you're majoring in some liberal arts field, or 2) want to learn more about what you SHOULD be doing with your time in college, this book is for you. But don't pick it up if you want to go to med, law, or some other graduate school. There are simply better titles for guiding you to those areas.

Customer Reviews:
Improved and Expanded 9th Edition.......2006-12-17
Now in its ninth edition, this book has become the standard of the field. It is intended to help those whose job it is to facilitate the career development process. This includes school, employment, career and rehabilitation counselors as well as other individuals who are influential in the career development process.
The ninth edition has improvements in virtually all areas, the most important of which is that it now meets all Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards. Another area that has been expanded is the concept of a career that changes from time to time in the workers life. Based on chaos theory, this realizes that the outlook for particular jobs, particular careers change from time to time and in unpredictable ways.
The strengths that this book brings to the subject in the form of the writing style and intellectual depth of the author remain; making this book both educational and entertaining.
fair book.......1998-09-22
Considering the vast topic this is a fairly good book. I found some of the data to be dated at this point and some what sexist.
