Working With Emotional Intelligence takes the concepts from Daniel Goleman's bestseller, Emotional Intelligence, into the workplace. Business leaders and outstanding performers are not defined by their IQs or even their job skills, but by their "emotional intelligence": a set of competencies that distinguishes how people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. Analyses done by dozens of experts in 500 corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations worldwide conclude that emotional intelligence is the barometer of excellence on virtually any job. This book explains what emotional intelligence is and why it counts more than IQ or expertise for excelling on the job. It details 12 personal competencies based on self-mastery (such as accurate self-assessment, self-control, initiative, and optimism) and 13 key relationship skills (such as service orientation, developing others, conflict management, and building bonds). Goleman includes many examples and anecdotes--from Fortune 500 companies to a nonprofit preschool--that show how these competencies lead to or thwart success.

Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can keep growing--it continues to develop with life experiences. Understanding and raising your emotional intelligence is essential to your success and leadership potential. This book is an excellent resource for learning how to accomplish this. --Joan Price

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

This abridged audio version, sharply narrated by the author, focuses on Goleman's theories of emotional intelligence in the workplace, a standard that measures how well people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. In educational but accessible tones, Dr. Goleman explains the need for emotional intelligence in employees, the issues that arise when such skills are lacking, and practical guidance on how to achieve these skills. Goleman's use of real-life examples highlights the important lessons learned from business-world successes and failures. The humorous anecdotes also keep the listener entertained while he presents somewhat esoteric but insightful and interesting ideas, which ultimately increase the potential to succeed and lead others. Book Description

Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career?

The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered.

For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today—and the future.

Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read.

Drawing on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and studies in more than 500 organizations, Goleman documents an astonishing fact: in determining star performance in every field, emotional intelligence matters twice as much as IQ or technical expertise.

Readers also discover how emotional competence can be learned. Goleman analyzes five key sets of skills and vividly shows how they determine who is hired and who is fired in the top corporations in the world. He also provides guidelines for training in the "emotionally intelligent organization," in chapters that no one, from manager to CEO, should miss.

Working with Emotional Intelligence could prove to be the most important reference for bottom-line businesspeople in the first decades of the 21st century.

4 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource.......2007-10-21

I read "Emotional Intelligence" by the same author and I learned and enjoyed the important insights on emotional intelligence that it provided. This motivated me to get the second book, "Working with Emotional Intelligence". This is a classic sequel that focuses on how emotional intelligence is applied in the workplace. The book is more practical than "Emotional Intelligence" and one need not have read the prior work to get the most from the book. However, the previous book has important concepts about emotional intelligence which will be very useful to those who wish to study the subject further.

The book is based on interviews and studies with business leaders and organizations and it explains what sets star performers apart and how emotional intelligence is critical for success. This book however is not quite practical. Emotional intelligence cannot be learned just by reading a book but rather requires a lot of practice and behavioural change to acquire the appropriate habits. The various examples and situations depicted in the book are very helpful to assist readers to readily identify and relate to similar situations in our lives. Hence you will benefit a lot by becoming more self-aware, an important first step in enhanced emotional intelligence. The book could, however, have been condensed significantly without diluting the message.

The author highlights aspects of personalities in the workplace that can adversely affect morale. The book discusses things that seem like common sense and common courtesy but which many people tend to forget. The bottom line is that we need to be mature, professional, and treat others with respect.

The book will benefit a wide readership including managers and workers at all levels as well as the home. For example, for a senior manager, it is vital to appreciate that success is not just about great strategies and working practices but knowing how to deal with the people's emotions and feelings about things. Mere skill or academic achievement, on their own, does not translate into professional success. This well written and insightful book cogently describes the missing link, that is to have high emotional intelligence to complement the rational and analytical skills captured by the intelligence quotient.

2 out of 5 stars Tedious.......2007-09-07

If you want to read about emotional intelligence, then get the original book for the same author "Emotional Intelligence". If you want to read about practical applications of emotional intelligence in the work place then this is what this book is about. I only gave it two stars because I think that the whole book should be summarised into 20-30 pages and just added as a chapter to the original work. Its important to read about the applications of emotional intelligence, but in this book you end up reading the same story over and over again with different companies and different people.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-06-10

I was expecting I would get information on IMPROVING my EQ. However the book only tells how EQ is important in working place but never provide methods on HOW TO IMPROVE it. Truely, the examples or stories of the importance of EQ are great, but I didn't benefit from anything.. as I ALREADY KNEW IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE EQ AT WORK! that's why I am looking for information about EQ..

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-12

Good information but does not execute how to utilize the information it leaves you confused and aggravated. I kept waiting for the punch line, guess the jokes on me.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, But It Ain't Science.......2007-05-09

I bought the unabridged audio CD version of this book. It was not well read, as others have said here, but I tried to look beyond that into the content.

Many of the assertions made by the author are supported by percentages and statistics which do not have any apparent source or academic credibility. The ideas are not bad - and some are downright fascinating. But I wonder about whether this is really "science" or something like scientology.

Goleman is clearly passionate and deep in belief, and his writing tends to express that depth. However, I don't know about the soundness of the platform on which so many of his assertions rest, and it makes me uneasy.

Given that he criticized corporate training programs for having little emphasis on measurable changes in business performance, this is really ironic.

Management and leadership is still as much art as science, and that might be where a reader can reconcile himself to Goleman's predicates. However, so much of what he asserts is not labelled art in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Just keeps giving.......2007-07-12

This is a book that just keeps giving. I bought it quite a while ago and really did not read it right away --- but ultimately I read the whole thing -- and I must admit I found myself appearing again and again in the descriptions.

But what really is great about this book is that if you just leave it on the coffee table or something like that, then you will find yourself picking it up and randomly looking at a chapter here and a chapter there -- and guess what -- it will all be relevant (if you are being honest with yourself). You will find yourself, your peers, coworkers, and your life.

Worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly helpful from an accidental reader.......2007-05-20

My wife bought the book and I was sceptical when I first saw it. I accidentally left it on a low table and our puppy picked it up and shredded most of the first chapter. I bought another copy from Amazon to replace the damaged copy. As I tried to repair the torn pages a few words caught my attention and after that I could not put it down. Take it from an initial sceptic that this book has very helpful suggestions and practical advice that you can readily apply. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is working.

2 out of 5 stars Pop-Psychology.......2007-05-14

This book was assigned reading for a "Leadership" in business class. The first two chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. Read those, and the rest will be just variations on the same theme. I now use the book as a doorstop.

4 out of 5 stars Smart Advice.......2007-05-12

As a veteran of the corporate world, I found the case studies and recommended solutions to common workplace snafus right on target. Best of all, the authors urge individuals to find out their options and own their decisions. In other words, no need to be the victim of an unhealthly work relationship. Hope is out there for those who can take a step back and not get tangled up in other person's bad behavior!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-13

With all the glowing reviews, I thought this book would have something new and innovative, something I hadn't heard before. No such luck. Some interesting strategies and tactics for dealing with difficult people and see how you might be contributing to the problem, but nothing you won't find in other books on the subject.

I eventually gave up before finishing the CD because of the lack of anything new and I got tired of listen to the authors :-(

I launched a new product line several years ago - learning a lot along the way. I am getting ready to launch a new line of products and decided to read this book. It was a tremendous resource! So many of the answers that I had to dig for and learn the hard (and expensive) way - are contained here in one easy to read book. I highly endorse it. It is also very motivational (as you read the stories of other people) that decided to take action and turn their idea into a successful business. Well worth the price. Very well written.

Mom inventors wanting more info on what's involved in bringing a product to market will want to read this book. The book offers practical advice on researching your market, creating your product prototype, protecting your idea, manufacturing your product, and bringing your product to market.

What I like best about the book is that it features case studies and practical advice from real-life mom inventors.

There are also lots of helpful website links and other helpful resources at the back of the book -- very helpful for mom inventors who wish to do some additional research.

This is a terrific and inspiring book that will be very helpful to mom inventors at any stage of bringing an invention to market -- conception right through delivery.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Informational & A Must Have.......2005-11-18

This book does it all for anyone wanting to create/invent a product that they hope to bring to market. Tamara shares in a very easy-to-read format her experiences, her expertise and saves the rest of us lots of time, energy and money. Her mistakes made along the way combined with her successes that continue to grow provide the reader with a wealth of knowledge about researching, developing, patenting, protecting, marketing (and more!) an idea/invention.

Pair this with the CD sets created by her dynamic and resourceful company mominventors.com, and you will walk away with knowledge you could not even get in business school! I wish I had read this three years ago when I first started my product line development. Thanks Tamara for sharing so freely and so generously to save the rest of us time and money!!!

Instant gratification junkies seeking self-awareness are bound to find the title of Ariel and Shya Kane's book extremely attractive. And seductive it is: who wouldn't like to discover enlightenment in a moment? The key, explain the Kanes, is getting to the moment: being fully present in the here and now without trying to manipulate or change what you see. According to the Kanes, "all problems are a projection towards the future of possible realities based on the past." Consequently, inhibitors to living life directly include the inability to let go of one's history--to forgive people and events from the past--as well as resistance to the circumstances of one's life, and repetitive, mechanical thoughts and behaviors. The essence of transformation is "a non-judgmental witnessing, viewing, or seeing of yourself and how you interact with your life," which stands in direct opposition to therapy's approach of working on one's history to bring about change. Here, awareness of a prejudice or pattern of behavior is--simply and immediately--enough to transform it.

Principles of awareness, self-realization, and enlightenment, of course, are nothing new, and the Kanes are careful to point this out. Some readers may wonder, then, why the Kanes refer to themselves as pioneers of a "revolutionary new technology," and whether Instantaneous Transformation(R) really requires a trademark. Nevertheless, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is warm, anecdotal, and conversationally written, and includes general suggestions and pointers for the reader rather than rules to memorize. All in all, it is a gentle and potentially powerful invitation to enter a new and liberating state of mind. --Svenja Soldovieri

Book Description

Working On Yourself Doesn't Work reveals a revolutionary new approach that will allow you to reach a state of awareness and "centeredness" that in the past was rarely, if ever, achieved. This book contains the keys to transform your life. It is a radical departure from the concept of working on yourself to bring about change. There are no gimmicks to learn, no rules to live by, or preset paths to follow. The Kanes' Instantaneous Transformation technology is about a change of states, a shifting of realities -- which will produce a quantum shift in your life. By reading this book, you will discover-- How to remain centered in stressful or challenging circumstances, A more honest, true and natural way of being that will allow you to be increasingly effective and satisfied in all aspects of your life, How to have relationships that are more loving, exciting and supportive, How to dissolve mechanical habits that rob you of spontaneity, joy and creativity.

"The clarity and focus I have attained by being exposed to the Kanes and their way of seeing makes the difference between life and death when leading my men down a smoke-filled hallway, searching for people trapped by fire. I feel extremely fortunate to have met them."

Lieutenant Mike Donlon

New York City Fire Department."

"What the Kanes have to offer is so very simple and yet so very profound. In the garden of all the flowers for personal transformation, and I have sampled many, this is the Rose. With great love and respect, the Kanes offer keys to awareness like no one else I have ever met. Their work is truly remarkable." Johnnie M. Jackson, Jr.Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary

5 out of 5 stars Life really can be this simple. WOW!!!!!! YEN Florida.......2007-03-27

I am a professional female that has felt out of place since I was 13. I have seen therapists and searched for something to fix myself my whole life. I have read many self help books and done The Landmark Forum. In 1998 I landed in an AA room and was taught the 12 Steps of recovery. I read the BIG BOOK and thought the stories were exaggerated since I couldn't relate to them. I stopped drinking and took the suggested steps; taking a "fearless moral inventory" of myself by identifying my so called defects of character. As I grew in recovery, I was to take a daily inventory of myself which constantly reinforced that there was always something wrong with me that needed fixing. I now have 7 years of uninterrupted sobriety and recently I had the pleasure of reading the book "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" and WOW!!! Did I get it...

See in AA we strive to live a day at a time but to be able to live a moment at a time was not something I had ever considered (I mean who can live in the moment there is so much to plan for?). It wasn't by doing the 12 steps that I learned I was living my life based on exaggerated truths made up as a child. These ideas ranged from "don't let anyone ever tell you what to do "to" don't ever depend on any man". These ideas never supported me in my life. They in fact have hindered every relationship I ever had whereby I never married or had children.
Now that I am aware of those ideas thru reading this book, I have never looked back or thought about them again. I have quit trying to work on myself. I have accepted my life and everything about it.

My life is so easy today. I have actually been able to save a relationship that I unconsciously have been sabotaging for the last 3 years. I saw clearly why I was afraid of success. Since I now have the insights, I choose not to go back to the past and judge myself or others for anything that happened. I also choose not to spend time in a place that doesn't exist yet. I can just concentrate on the fabulous moment and how it feels to be here right now. Talk about freedom from the bondage of self. My shackles have been taken off permanently. Thank you to Ariel and Shya for sharing their incredible experiences with the world and most importantly for the ease in which they do it.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-03-12

I orded this too quickly and should have looked closer at the inside, and the reviews. Its just another of many "God is who you want him to be, find your own way..nirvana, happy place yada yada written to sell, not to help books..I have to say that if God is who you want him to be?? then how could HE be God? Must be YOU thats God..anyway the book was disgustingly typical.

5 out of 5 stars Classic guide book to living in the moment.......2007-03-09

There have been many insightful and helpful books written over time on the subject of living in the moment and only one that stands out for me as the best...and this book is it. It's the best in my opinion because the tools and ideas presented truly work in creating a life where lasting satisfaction and fulfillment can happen. It is definitely possible to live in the moment, day in day out, where the bumps on your life's road do not need to throw you off your path. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in living a life they dream of...it's possible for you because it's happened and continues to happen for me in my own life.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Know.......2006-11-15

The title of this book may seem enigmatic, but it is the foundation of having a wonderful life. The reader may wonder, If I don't work on myself, won't I become complacent? Not at all! The reason that working on yourself doesn't work, the Kanes explain, is that it presupposes that there is something wrong with you. But, as their second principle states, you can only be exactly as you are in any given moment. As long as you imagine you are messed up and in need of repair you resist the way that your life is showing up. This leads to the first principle: anything that you resist persists and grows stronger. If you want to see a behavior stick around, resistance - the adding of oppositional energy - will do the trick.

Although working on yourself doesn't work, there is much you can discover about your mechanical ways of operating that can improve the quality of your life. Through awareness - defined by the Kanes as the non-judgmental seeing of anything - your experience of living can shift without your having to do anything else. This is encompassed by the Kanes' third principle: anything you see exactly as it is will complete itself.

Does it sound all too simple? It is, and it works. This is why I recommend this book, more than any other, to the people in my life. After years of searching for well being - attending workshops, reading numerous books, and even staying on a farm to find a better way of living - Working on Yourself Doesn't Work is the only thing that I have found that does work. Read again and again, the book makes life easy, magical, and effortless.

5 out of 5 stars Internal Light!.......2006-10-29

"Working on yourself doesn't work"- I have read this book over and over again for nearly two years. The interesting title initially got my attention, but ten minutes into reading it, I knew I had found a treasure!

There are many books out there that lift your spirits, but not often have I found something written with such clarity and wisdom. Beauty and simplicity shine through the core concept - Transformation. In reading this book I came to realize nothing produces happiness like the deep satisfication which comes from within: If I am true to myself, and not judging what I see, I can simply be me and be there for others. Powerful!I highly recommend anyone who is interesed in having a great life to read this book!

Book Description

You could think of Setting Up LAMP as four books in one, but it's actually something much more valuable: a single volume that presents the open-source technologies known collectively as LAMP—Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP—as tightly dovetailed components of today's most affordable and effective platform for building dynamic web-based applications.

Each technology has uses outside of this context, of course, but within it they form something greater than the sum of their parts. This book shows you how to take full advantage of this power, walking you through all the steps required to lay your Linux foundation, install and configure your Apache web server, and then begin using PHP to access content stored in MySQL. Here are a few of the specific topics you'll find covered inside:

If you're new to all of this, you'll quickly get to where you need to be to start developing and deploying the higher-level pieces of your web application. Even if you have experience with one or all of these technologies, this book—including its quick-start installation appendix—is a resource you'll want close by whenever you're setting up or fine-tuning your LAMP system.

3 out of 5 stars Good information but outdated.......2007-07-12

This book was probably great a couple of years ago. It has great step-by-step instructions, and it walks you through things in a very detailed manner.

However, since the versions of all software (and the OS) used in the book have been updated at least a few times since 2004, I ran into several issues. Maybe 10% of all the links are accurate (which you need to install the .rpm files in the way the book tells you to), and when you do find the updated versions of everything, some of the commands the book gives you produce errors. Since the instructions probably worked correctly in 2004, there is no information on what those errors mean or how to fix them.

In short, I'm setting this book aside to find something more recent, and reloading the system I was using to test this with. If you do not have prior experience and a good understanding of how all of these programs work and how to troubleshoot their errors, I would recommend finding a more up-to-date book.

2 out of 5 stars Not what was expected........2007-01-09

I am very unsatisfied with this book. It only gives instructions on how to setup a lamp using one distro only. And it was geared only to well experienced users. The book was incomprehensible to me.

3 out of 5 stars Not a beginner book.......2006-08-25

This book is listed as a beginner to intermediate book, but I would rate it as intermediate at the very least. The author has a fetish for unnecessarily elaborate terminology that overcomplicates straightforward operational activities (to exemplify my point). Otherwise, it is a good overview of the four technologies and how they work together to provide a seamless web presence.

4 out of 5 stars A great resource on this subject.......2006-03-05

One of the things I liked about this book was the amount of detail it had on its subjects, and yet it is not a 1000 page novel. If you just want to have a system running a web server and you don't really care about how it works and what is going on, then this is definitely not the book for you. However, if you really want to learn how these components work together and exactly what is going on, then I do recommend this book. After taking a Linux course, I picked this up and still learned quite a bit from the introduction to Linux chapter. Everything is very clearly written and easy to understand. The only thing I didn't like was that many of the pages are devoted to listing configuration files, but you can easily just skip over these if they don't apply to you.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed review of material covered.......2006-02-11

If you are looking for a book that provides a brief overview, you will be satisfied with Eric Rosebrock's book. If you are looking for a "how to" reference book that covers MySQL and PHP in depth, you will probably be disappointed. The book merely provides basic information as the title states: "Setting Up LAMP: Getting Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP Working Together" that being LAMP installation and configuration procedures on a FEDORA Linux environment. This book offers the necessary information to install FEDORA Linux, and getting your Apache web server operating with MySQL and PHP. Rosebrock's book does save you the time and effort of having to glean information from those various "open source computer geeks" (right brain) web sites.

Book Description

Whether she is a corporate executive or a factory worker, an entrepreneur or a "mompreneur," today's woman is an integral part of the workforce and the American Dream. Women have made inroads in many professions that were once the domain of only men while juggling the many demands of work and family. From the woman who manages a staff of fifty, to the mother who choreographs the comings and goings of a family of five, women are the ultimate multitaskers. This collection celebrates the diversity and special contributions of women in the world of work-their hopes, their dreams and aspirations, and their accomplishments. This very special book also acknowledges the important and often unappreciated women in the homeplace through stories of stay-at-home moms for whom raising children was their most important task. These tales recognize the vital contributions of women who find their reward in devoting their lives to their families instead of collecting a paycheck. Chapters include: All in a Day's Work; Balancing Work and Family; Teamwork; Special Moments, and more, and each shares the trials of working women and the special joys that achieving career dreams can bring. Readers will laugh, cry and nod in agreement as they connect with women who are not just making a living, but making a life.

5 out of 5 stars All around wonderful book.......2005-01-19

This book will lift your spirits any day no matter how bad a day it has been. This shows so many things that women in the workplace encounter and also the lighter side of things. Great book. I especially like it because the stories are short so you don't need a lot of time to get a quick lift.

5 out of 5 stars Take Care of Your Soul!.......2003-09-15

Every woman alive is a working woman, no matter whether she has a husband and/or children, or not. There are daily struggles with family, weekly struggles with work and ultimately, very emotional struggles with just living! Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul is a moment of relaxation. It's a chance for a woman to sit down with a soothing drink, put her feet up and dive into the issues that we all face - as seen through the eyes of our peers. As a mom, it's a chance for me to see that my kids aren't as wild as I sometimes feel they are ... as a woman, it was the opportunity to see that work and balancing issues happen to everyone ... and as a wife, it gave me a firm appreciation for the amount of work that my husband and I accomplish as we take care of our family. The one point of this book that isn't mentioned enough is that our souls need to be in shape before we can contend with the world around us. Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul gives a woman a chance to parlay her soul into the being that she wants it to be, while allowing us to view inside a slice of another's soul. It's thought provoking, entertaining and reassuring to see that other women are in the same places in their lives that we have been with various issues. It's a chit-chat, without the other person sitting in front of you. I believe this is one of those books that you read, set on your bookshelf, and read again when the world around you is pulling you in every direction. It's a safe haven in turmoil, and it's a chance for a woman to recharge after a rough one! It's, well, it's chicken soup for the working woman's soul!

3 out of 5 stars Good persuasion tool for managers.......2007-05-18

This is not the best media skills book on the market, especially if you are working with volunteer or advocacy groups who need things broken down more simply and visually. However, it covers the basics and works well as an academic "bible" if you need to convince peers or management to adopt new tactics. Every PR pro can whine for hours about clients and bosses who don't want to grasp the importance of identifying goals and target audiences before jumping into the tactics. (Too many people think seeing a news clip or their name in the paper is success, even if it doesn't really help advance their cause.) This book gives a good overview for managers seeking an understanding of strategy and is a "valid" source when pros are making the case to be more strategic when developing a media plan so that organizations can win.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners in non-profit PR.......2004-08-11

I use this book to teach a beginning workshop in public relations for non-profit organizations as part of a continuing education program at a local community college. The book is an excellent resource for individuals who are not familar with public relations. It takes the reader through all of the things that he or she will need to do to effectively promote his or her organization.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Useful for Students.......2002-08-21

The Jossey-Bass Guide to Strategic Communications for Nonprofits is a detailed examination of the relationship between nonprofits and the media. As the title says, it provides a step-by-step guide for nonprofits to establish effective relations with the media that result in publicity. My professor recommended this book to me, and I'm finding it quite useful. It has a similar approach to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine; both are about maximizing your return on investment.

I especially enjoyed this book because I'm thinking about working for a nonprofit after graduation, and I haven't seen anywhere near as much about public relations and publicity for nonprofits as I've seen for corporations.

There's the Assimilationist who believes that everyone should act like a true blue American, and the Culturalcentrist who believes that a person's race or ethnicity is central to their personal and public identity; the Meritrocratist who is sure that if you have the abilities and work hard enough you can make your dreams come true regardless of race or culture, and the Victim/Caregiver who believes that because of bias they will never succeed. Learn more about these lenses, as well as six other lenses that Mark Williams has developed to respond to cultural diversity.

5 out of 5 stars The 10 Lenses: Your Guide to Living & Working in a Multicultural World.......2007-01-04

I first read the 10 Lenses several years ago after meeting author Mark Williams at a Summit on Leading Diversity Conference in Atlanta. I have been using The 10 Lenses in our diversity education programs ever sense. This book has proven to a great conversation starter, without the usual "blame and shame" sometimes associated with diversity training. In fact, we have even established a very successful four-week course around "The 10 Lenses" in our Hampton Diversity Leadership Academy. Mark has advanced the entire discussion of "diversity" with this book. I highly recommend it to any diversity/inclusion professional.

3 out of 5 stars Promising, but in the end Disappointing.......2003-12-04

This is a useful Guide to Living as & Working with Immigrants in a Multicultural USA, not a Multicultural World. It really has little or no street-credibility outside the USA.

I've worked for a US Fortune500 Company for 20 years, and in over 30 Countries.

The book confesses upfront to its limitations : although the information is US-centric, Williams, Clifton & Thomas believe their concepts are universal - but they haven't the experience to back that up. They admit they don't know whether current observations will hold up in different cultures, or whether different cultures have different profiles with respect to the lenses. The initial research has focussed on race, culture, nationality & ethnicity. In practice 90% of its focus is on race & ethnicity. Sexual orientation is ignored, and the word 'gay' doesn't appear until over 80% of the way through the book - and its only for one sentence.

Consider some of the Lenses :

For the Assimilationist they talk about "adapting US business norms appropriately, given global norms and standards" - well I've never met a "Global norm" - and as for being able to adapt US norms, there's the problem - you have to reject US norms in order to get on with the outside world. The Assimilationist must think about "Western cultural arrogance" - woah - what about "US Cultural arrogance" - ask a Canadian or a Mexican or the French how they feel about US hegemony.

The Culturalcentrist talks about the "Irish, Polish & Italian Communities", and in the same breath about the "Asian Community" - I'm sure the "Asians" would argue they had less in common between India, Vietnam, Korea etc than those Europeans, who at least had Catholicism in common.

For the Seclusionist : "Globalisation ... diminishes the authority of the USA" - hmm, I thought everyone was rioting recently complaining that Globalisation meant US hegemony? The Seclusionist "rewards the efforts of the majority group" - oh so Williams has never thought of a Society where the dominant group is itself a Minority, such as in Apartheid-era South Africa, and a number of other inequitable Societies today?

The Transcendant options were just not for me - according to Williams you are either 'Religious' or you are 'Spiritual' - nothing else applies. I am neither, and quite happy thank you. I'm always made to feel uncomfortable with this aspect of US Society, and it would be good if Williams had a section on how to work with 'agnostics'.

The Elitist offered no alternatives - what about Communism or Socialism - the inequalities of US Society would not be tolerated in Scandinavia. As I say to my friends in Minneapolis, it's a pity the wrong shipload of explorers colonised North America.

For all the talk about race, there's no mention of working with people in mixed-race relationships or of mixed-race ethnicity - over 10% of marriages in the UK are mixed-race, even though the ethnic minorities constitute less than 8% of the population. I find mixed-race marriages in the USA to be a tragic rarity - and why aren't they promoted in TV programs?

There were no examples of other diversities which can be just as sensitive in Society, such as no case studies featuring Native Americans, Hindus, Moslems, Lesbians, Vegetarians or people with Physical/Mental disabilities.

The much-promoted mystical Chapter on the Eleventh Lens was a real disappointment - just some new world 'Nirvana' where everyone loved each other and did right by each other (I presume so long as you could still hire & fire at will).

When I looked through the Bibliography, I understood; of the 86 references, only 2 of them weren't published in the USA, and they were published in London (both looking back at the USA). You can't write a book about a Multicultural world if you don't read/travel widely.

Williams continually refers back to Title VII of the (US) Civil Rights Act (pity he didn't include it as an Appendix). It would have been nice to talk about the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights - since so much of US Society doesn't comply with it. I recall when one of our Senior US Executives starting to spout about Affirmative Action etc at a staff meeting in Germany - he had to be told to leave or they'd call the Police - because his US-speak was illegal under anti-Nazi legislation.

I scored myself on the Lenses : I am Colorblind, an Integrationalist, Meritocratist and a Multiculturalist. Williams was (in 2001) inviting Contributors to help them develop the book for a wider audience - I'm going to volunteer to help them, because boy do they need it.

5 out of 5 stars The Eleventh Lens.......2003-03-01

Mark Williams' research outlining 10 human mindset "lenses" addresses the problems of conflicting worldviews both in and out of the workplace. His work is extremely well organized for easy reference; you'll recognize in yourself and/or others the Assimilationist, Colorblind, Culturalcentrist, Elitist, Integrationist, Meritocratist, Multiculturalist, Seclusionist, New Age/Transcendent and/or Victim/Caretaker. With hope, you'll also recognize the real point of the book and the research: that you've been reaching for your inclusive ELEVENTH LENS where paradoxical thinking acknowledges and discerns the strengths and weaknesses each limited lens brings to the whole personally, professionally and socially -- and globally. See also the integrative developmental framework in A Brief History of Everything by Ken Wilber and Spiral Dynamics by Don Beck and Christopher Cowan.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" -- A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2001-11-09

"The Ten Lenses" is a badly needed breath of fresh air -- a sophisticated, intellectually grounded, and constructive framework for thinking about diversity issues. It respects and values all people and all perspectives on diversity. It opens a path to understanding each different perspective, even those dramatically different from one's own. It helps take the emotional charge out of verbal interactions between people whose approaches and reactions to diversity issues are widely divergent. It provides a new framework and a new language through which we can talk about diversity and move towards greater understanding. "The Ten Lenses" was an enormous help to me and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars "The Ten Lenses" Opens Your Eyes!.......2001-11-08

I live and work in Washington, D.C., one of the most diverse cities in America. My department at work was having a lot of problems due to such a diverse workforce. We could not communicate well and our projects were never completed on time and never completed correctly. My boss brought this book in one day after he stayed up all night reading it. He could not put "The 10 Lenses" down. In a very short time, my department has turned itself around using the premises in this book. If you want to have a successful business, buy "The 10 Lenses."

Good for a basic understanding and easy to read but tends to emphasize research and science less, and trendy, faddish aspecdts of group dynamics more. Still pretty well balanced overall though their choices in what to cover are sometimes odd, with important but not trendy issues dropped in favor of current fashion and popular jargon / instruments.

Timely delivery and in perfect condition.

3 out of 5 stars Too broad a topic..........2006-08-01

The discussion was so broad that it was almost irrelevant. It is not Peterson's fault though. Any discussion about every culture in the world is necessarily broad, but I think I would have gotten more out of the book if it focused on a specific area of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Cultural Intelligence.......2005-03-13

Cultural issues are not a new topic, but this book is so well written that it quickly becomes an interesting read and valuable learning tool for almost all of us, because of the world we live in, now and in the future. The author begins by explaining the importance of cultural intelligence for many of our business and personal interactions (with people from other ethnic groups at home and around the world), then listing what to expect (how the book is organized and why), and finally presenting a wealth of information about the topic (with vivid examples of how to apply it to our daily lives). Those examples are a clear indication that the author has accumulated his knowledge through wide reading, a variety of teaching contexts, and comprehensive practical experience in the field. The book identifies common cross-cultural dilemmas and offers practical solutions by outlining primary principles as a foundation for decision-making and describing how individual differences must be considered. The use of continuums throughout the book, and in the tool The Peterson Cultural Style Indicator, ensures that the reader understands and effectively uses the concept of Gray, versus Black and White, in human relationships. A good summary is the equation presented of Cultural Intelligence: Knowledge about Cultures + Awareness (of self and others) + Specific Skills (behaviors).

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-08-04

Imagine a guidebook that helps you navigate the uncharted lands of strange cultures or, at least, cultures that seem strange to you. Author Brooks Peterson is less concerned with social advice than he is with explaining how to manage broad cultural differences and avoid cultural egocentrism. While he soundly reviews measures of cultural differences, such as cultural scales, he avoids delving into complex, abstract theories with little practical application. His clearly written book treats all cultures objectively, covering broad tendencies without venturing into cultural generalities. He alerts you to the nuances of other cultures and your own. We strongly recommend this book to anyone who interacts with the values of other cultures on a regular basis - and, these days, that's just about everybody.
