In Organizing from the Inside Out, author Julie Morgenstern used three main strategies to whip a living space or office into shape: "analyze, strategize, attack." Using the same system, Morgenstern now shows readers how to get rid of chaotic schedules in order to live more comfortable and productive lives. Morgenstern likens a cluttered schedule to a cluttered closet. For example, a closet is typically "crammed with more stuff than storage," and a schedule is typically "crammed with more tasks than time."
Those who fear "time management" because they worry about living uncreative or overly scheduled lives will find themselves reassured by Morgenstern's ability to customize her system. The most important thing readers must do, she emphasizes, is to create a time management system that fits one's personal style--whether it be spontaneous and easily distracted or highly regimented and efficient. "Just as everyone's living room looks different, reflecting the individual's or family's values and priorities, everyone's time management system will look different, reflecting what's important to him or her," she explains. Fortunately, readers can easily customize her excellent advice while learning how to create a personal time map, streamline routine tasks, conquer procrastination and chronic lateness, and manage all the inevitable crises and distractions of daily life. Speaking of procrastination, what better time than now to try this book out--ridding yourself of all that draining clutter so you can get on with living the life you want? --Gail Hudson

Excellent; just a little repetative.......2007-10-19
I LOOOOVE this book. It so explains the psychology behind tardiness, mismanagement of time, etc. It definitely gives a great step-by-step guide on how to manage time. It also takes into consideration people's personalities and individual lifestyles. For instance, people who are afraid that a rigid "time map" might hinder their creativity and spontaneity...it gives us various methods to deal with the realities of our lives and accept our weaknesses (rather than continually pretending that they don't exist and continually failing!) and find ways around those weakness, and use our strengths to our advantage. The book shows how to reach our goals by using our time to our advantage. It can transform the person whose time is chaotic and imprisoned and turn them into the person whose life is orderly and free!
The only disadvantage to this book (very minor) is that the author starts repeating herself 2/3 of the way into the book. As I was typing notes throughout my reading, I started realizing that I was typing the same things over and over.
Good time strategies for aquired brain injuries.......2007-10-18
I have an acquired brain injury from falling down some stairs. I find the strategies in this book to be very helpful indeed. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to get a handle on their time.
Worth Reading.......2007-07-04
I really loved this book. I got so much out of it, that I have started to read all her other books too. She is really different in her approach to time management and it really works for me. The book is very well written, easy to follow and is a book you can keep to use as a resource for many years to come.
My Clients Love this Book.......2007-03-24
I just got this book because my business coaching clients often have issues with running a business, often by themselves, and finding enought time to have a life. Julie offers great, easy to implement strategies that help the really busy person get control. I love that she looks at the hidden reasons behind our time management difficulties and styles. I keep recommending it and will continue!

For everyone who has been trying to be organized...this is the book to start with !

Full of Practical Ideas.......2007-03-30
As a professional organizer, I have read quite a few books on organizing. This book was very light and easy to read, which I liked. In addition, it has practical ideas for using inexpensive (and sometimes free) storage containers. Many people are on a tight budget, but with the suggestions made in this book, you can find the products inexpensively and at your convenience.
If you don't want to read this book cover-to-cover, there is an index in the back that can be used to find solutions to a problem area you want to tackle.
I'd recommend this book as a resource for tackling each room in your home.
The only Organizing book you'll need!.......2007-02-24
I was a 28 year old working woman who was overwhelmed with my domestic responsiblites and drowning in a sea of mess, clutter and chaos. Thanks to "Confessions of an Organized Homemaker" now my home is well put together and neat. No longer do I stress out over grocery shopping, laundry, and planning meals. I was a constant last minute person, doing the laundry when I was down to the last towel, grocery shopping only after I had exhaused all meal possibilites it was terrible. I even served chicken thighs on hamburger bun havles with gravy on top! Thanks to Deniece Schofield I have my life back. She covers everything from finding storage spots to creating your own grocery lists where the items are grouped together by catergories. She lets the reader apply what works and leave what doesn't. This book is perfect for newlyweds and young people who have moved out of the house. Buy it and you'll see what I'm taking about!
Practical information in a breezy book.......2007-01-04
Each chapter naturally leads into the next, so the writing flow is smooth, but what sets this book apart from others of its kind is the sheer volume of ideas. The author doesn't provide a one-size-fits-all mentality and allows the reader to draw his/her own conclusion(s) and adapt to his/her own environment. More pictures would have been nice.
Enjoyable Read, Timeless Advice.......2006-11-17
I really enjoyed this book. The ideas aren't necessarily original compared to other household organizing books, but it was more enjoyable to read than most. I enjoyed the author's anecdotes and personal remarks throughout. It made it more fun to read something that was already full of good advice. I'd love a new and updated version that brings us more up to date with the technology that is omnipresent today, but even though this is dated, it doesn't feel that way. Instead I'd call it "timeless". I will keep this and enjoy reading it and referring to certain sections over and over again. A great household resource.
Great book, great ideas.......2006-08-23
I own this book for several years now, and reading it really help me to get more organized. I reorganized my kitchen and I love it this way - cooking and backing became more fun. The chapter about how to organize the kids room was very helpful, as with three kids inevitably a lot of toys/puzzles/lego pieces are accumulated - and - by the way - that's exactly how I store kids puzzles, and yes, kids DO the puzzles more then once! Thank you, Deniece, for sharing your ideas with us!

Shortest book on Time management.......2006-01-07
Read it if you are busy. You can finish it on a single flight. Very worthwhile.
Small investment, large payback..........2005-12-13
With the new year fast approaching, I'm getting that urge to spend a bit more time examining my life and what I'm doing. As part of that review, I had a chance to read Taking Control Of Your Life by Harvard Business School Press. There's quite a few gems hidden in this relatively small volume.
Contents: Be Sure You're Spending Your Time in the Right Places; Strategies for the Shorthanded; Timeless insights on How to Manage Your Time; Getting Organized; How to Make Every Meeting Better; Copying with Infoglut; Is Multitasking Overrated?; Fast-Cycle Decision Making; Speed Leading; Advice to Leaders in New Jobs; Don't Throw Good Money (or Time) After Bad; Which Projects Get Top Billing?; Making Sense of Your Time Bind, and Escaping It; Pump Up Your Volume!; Five Questions About Encouraging Managers to Delegate with Jeffrey Pfeffer
Taking Control Of Your Time is a compilation of a number of articles that have appeared in the Harvard Management Update and the Harvard Management Communication Letter that all have to do with some element of time and life management. Since there are various authors, you'll get a wide range of views and techniques that you can use to start making better use of the finite amount of time and attention you have. It's likely that not all articles will apply directly to you (like Advice to Leaders in New Jobs didn't apply to me). But a few short pages away, you'll run into something that resonates loudly (like Is Multitasking Overrated?). My personal goal with a book like this is to come away with two or three good ideas on how to modify my actions to improve my productivity and efficiency. Without a doubt, this book met that standard.
Regardless of whether you're planning a new start for the new year or you're just trying to cope, this book can be a small investment with major returns in your life.
Taking Control of your time and life and career!.......2005-04-29
This is one of the few self-improvement books I would recommend. I own a real estate business and find myself constantly interrupted and incapable of completing one days worth of "To do" lists. This book is teaching me how to really prioritize, take time off each day to think (yes, one of the most undervalued assets in the business world today to advance one's career, is to make the time to think) and strategize for better ways to live and work. It also challenges me on how to asess which meetings are advancers of career and which are void of any such prospects. You learn how to empower yourself in ways that avoid endless, meaningless meetings in favor of quick phone conferences, emails
I recommend you read it: your career and life are about to improve substantially!
Excellent Book on Time Management and Becoming a good person.......2005-03-21
The book consists of small articles and each of them tells you about how can you improve yourself, your time management skill, reducing stress etc. It has lots of practical cases and if you read, you'll feel like you are the character discussed.
If one book you want to buy about time management and want to become a good and efficient person, go and buy it. It's practical and full of tips and real life examples.
Book Description
It is hard to admit, but many of us have found ourselves among the ranks of the organizationally challenged. We just can't seem to "Get it together," no matter how many calendars we buy or systems we try. Williams shows that we are not alone in out attempts to balance work, kids, family, friends and relationships, while still squeezing in some self-time. More than ever, people feel stretched beyond the limits of their physical and emotional endurance.
In Common Sense Organizing, Williams shares how to customize home and life management to meet out needs, instead of trying to fit ourselves into the latest system. The author shows how a one-size-fits-all organizing mentality can quickly lead to frustration. Instead, she shares her common-sense approach that any reader can adapt, to take control of their home and their life-once and for all!

Just OK for me.......2007-01-03
I honestly wasn't a big fan of this book...it has some common sense information, but other than that, it just wasn't helpful for me. Perhaps it just wasn't what I was looking for.
Good for beginning organizers - light for the pros.......2005-03-21
This book would be a good "first" book to have on the subject of organizing and home management, but it might be a little light if you've read a few and are more than a novice.
Even though I don't like to visualize what this space would be like and other "pie-in-the-sky" planning, I found that when I actually answered those questions and determined what would be ideal, it's easier to get there and maintain it.
I really like organizing and home management books and I've written some reviews and comparisons of these kinds of books on my website: www.momsplaceonline.com
This book is good for the money and it has some good ideas, even if it's not the best on the market. It's all a learning process.

Structure for the Totally Disorganized.......2005-03-21
If you've ever done spring cleaning, you know that the most important step is to get rid of what you don't need. To do that, you have to sort through everything you do need. And then you found that a lot of the stuff you kept . . . you didn't really need . . . the next time you did your spring cleaning.
Having moved offices several times in the last 15 years, I was struck by how much I could toss each time I moved . . . and how much more I should have tossed.
The principles in this helpful book build on that observation and experience, and turn the thought into a process. That's the beauty of the book: Plan; Sort; Organize What's Left; and Maintain the System You've Established. That process works for me!
Although a lot of the book is about getting rid of stuff and condensing what's left into more usable locations and less space, Ms. Williams also looks at organizing your role as a parent and making better use of your time. I thought the latter two subjects needed more depth than Ms. Williams brought to the subjects.
Ms. Williams is at her best when she's diving into a closet, a bathroom or a car . . . and turning it into a more usable location. Much of her book is specialized to the special problems of different living and work environments. How much did I learn? Well, a lot of the tips are ones that I didn't feel inclined to follow. For me, the book was too . . . well . . . organized. There's lots of list making and list checking. I'm more of a free form fellow who likes to plow ahead and just get it done.
If you like making lists and checking them twice, you will be thrilled with this book and be convinced it's the ultimate in five star efforts.
For those who have little experience with organizing space, I'm sure the many boxed "Bright Ideas" will be a high point.
When I write a review of a book I try to think of who the ideal reader is. For this book, it's a young couple who have just moved to a Manhattan apartment on the fifth floor of a walk-up that's half the size they had before in Ann Arbor . . . and who are expecting triplets.
Spring's here. So what are you waiting for?
Step by step help for the organizationally challenged.......2005-03-03
Debbie's great humor and joy come through every page in her latest book. It's like having your very own organizational specialist come to your home and hold your hand through every step and every room. And this is a lot cheaper!
Debbie takes you through every aspect of becoming organized. And included are many little tips like how to get wrinkles out of those clothes that have been sitting around unfolded. Has she been sneaking into my house?!
I didn't even know where to begin to organize and de-clutter. It just seemed too overwhelming. I have always been amazed at those people who have perfectly organized homes without clutter. They know where everything is! How do they do it? It is embarrassing to have unexpected guests over when you live in a cluttered world. But how do you go about organizing your life? What is the first step? Where do I begin? Debbie makes it seem so simple! I finally have a plan and vision and practical steps for living a different life: one of no clutter. Let's face it: when your house and your life are in order, there is also peace in your life. There is happiness and joy.
Topics covered in this book are getting it together, common sense organizing, conquering the clutter, the organized parent (yes, it is possible to be an organized parent), office management, time management, cleaning, and many resources listed in the back. Everything you need for a completely clutter-free, organized life!
I love Debbie's style of writing and all of her common sense ideas to help you take control of your life. She has a beautiful attitude and faith that shine through the entire book. You will NOT be disappointed with this. I can't recommend it enough. I only wish I had it a long time ago. Thanks Debbie!
Book Description
Event planning never stops. This industry goes 24/7, 365 days a year. Planners work evenings, weekends, and holidays, often far away from their home base, organizing and running events that simply must go on, and go smoothly. Missing a critical deadline is not an option in the event planning field. Time management errors can cost a company a potential sale, lose them an existing customer, and damage their professional reputation.
Burnout and chaos are real risks in this hectic world of deadlines and multiple projects. Planners often find themselves working down to the wire against crushing deadlines and a mountain of obstacles that impede their progress. Too frequently, there is not enough time to get the job done properly, let alone to spend on personal or professional pursuits. And for many involved in the event planning field, there is the extra dimension of travel to factor in, juggling multiple projects on a daily basis across a multitude of time zones.
For smooth event implementation, and for business success, it is essential that planners know how to manage their own time as well as they manage an event. Time Management for Event Planners teaches readers how to successfully manage their workload, and do what matters most, when it matters most:
- Analyze and prioritize tasks.
- Structure your workload and your day for maximum performance.
- Identify red-flag activities that hinder productivity.
- Reduce stress-producing time crunches.
- Identify when extra help is needed, as well as how to delegate, outsource, and even partner with suppliers in crunch periods.
- Work with rather than against deadlines.
- Save time using technology.
- Manage multiple projects, even in multiple time zones.
- Balance your personal and professional life.
Whether you are an event planner, a hospitality professional, in public relations or other related fields, Time Management for Event Planners offers time-saving tips, techniques, examples, and expert insight that will help you get time on your side.

How to take control of your work day and life........2004-06-02
Some excellent advice on how to improve your work life by placing priorities on your job tasks, and working on only the most pressing and important. These tapes are also chock full of advice on how to control your socializing, and placing priorities on family priorities. It is not about working harder, but working smarter. I like one idea which Dick places before everybody and that is that nobody can accomplish all they seek to do. Prioritization places you in a position of working on those that need to be done, not on those that are the least important. Another gem was never working overtime on Quandrant Three and Four activities, it just isn't worth it. Lohr states using these techniques will give the individual three weeks worth of extra time in a year for work activites which is a great reward for us busy managers.
I have already started using these techniques and I believe Dick is right when he says it will increase your business effectiveness. I think this is a great listen.
