Book Description
Completely Updated and Revised
This revised edition of Peter Senge’s bestselling classic, The Fifth Discipline, is based on fifteen years of experience in putting the book’s ideas into practice. As Senge makes clear, in the long run the only sustainable competitive advantage is your organization’s ability to learn faster than the competition. The leadership stories in the book demonstrate the many ways that the core ideas in The Fifth Discipline, many of which seemed radical when first published in 1990, have become deeply integrated into people’s ways of seeing the world and their managerial practices.
In The Fifth Discipline, Senge describes how companies can rid themselves of the learning “disabilities” that threaten their productivity and success by adopting the strategies of learning organizations—ones in which new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective aspiration is set free, and people are continually learning how to create results they truly desire.
The updated and revised Currency edition of this business classic contains over one hundred pages of new material based on interviews with dozens of practitioners at companies like BP, Unilever, Intel, Ford, HP, Saudi Aramco, and organizations like Roca, Oxfam, and The World Bank. It features a new Foreword about the success Peter Senge has achieved with learning organizations since the book’s inception, as well as new chapters on Impetus (getting started), Strategies, Leaders’ New Work, Systems Citizens, and Frontiers for the Future.
Mastering the disciplines Senge outlines in the book will:
• Reignite the spark of genuine learning driven by people focused on what truly matters to them
• Bridge teamwork into macro-creativity
• Free you of confining assumptions and mindsets
• Teach you to see the forest and the trees
• End the struggle between work and personal time

Insightful and Informative Book.......2007-10-20
The Fifth Discipline is a seminal book by the famous author Peter M. Senge. The book teaches the concept of the learning organization namely that the successful organization must continually adapt and learn in order to respond to changes in the environment effectively and therefore to grow and prosper. I have read the book a number of times and keep on referring to it as is filled with a lot useful knowledge and wisdom. System thinking and learning is critical to organisational growth and development in the present highly dynamic operating environment.
According to Peter Senge, "real learning gets to the heart of what it means to be human. Through learning we re-create ourselves. Through learning we become able to do something we never were able to do. Through learning we reperceive the world and our relationship to it. Through learning we extend our capacity to create, to be part of the generative process of life. There is within each of us a deep hunger for this type of learning"--powerful advice indeed from a real learning guru.
This revised and updated edition includes the thoughts and ideas of some successful practitioners, taking into account developments since the first edition was published about 15 years earlier. Do not be intimidated by the length of the book, over 450 pages, as it is very informative, insightful and interesting to read.
I recommend this book for individuals interested in understanding the nature of how organizations develop, how behaviours are formed, and how organizations achieve growth and augment their capabilities. You will learn how to improve the way your organization or department functions, how to review and improve systems and how to develop shared visions, create long term goals among other critical insights.

I have not read the book yet, but it came to me very fast. I was pleased with the service and I enjoy using Amazon.

Must read.......2007-09-17
Any manager who wishes to develop the organization he works for must read this book. It is an excellent introduction to systems thinking within any type of organization.
The World is Knowledge Intensive.......2007-09-06
In addition to being a fan of Peter Senge, I'm also a great fan of the ultimate management guru, Peter Drucker, who got me thinking about "the learning organization" in his book, The Age of Discontinuity, when he said: "The world is becoming not labor intensive, not material intensive, not energy intensive, but knowledge intensive." I believe it, and thus, I was very receptive to Senge's thoughts in this book.
The central premise of my latest book, The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit & Growth The Three Pillars of Sustainable Profit and Growth is this: the only sustainable advantage any firm can achieve in the future is the quality of the human talent it is able to recruit and retain. The knowledge they bring with them, and continue to acquire, is the key to their company's future growth and success.
Senge put it this way: "The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable competitive advantage."
Bottom line: I believe that managing knowledge in the contemporary business world is just as important as managing money. Successful companies of the future will clearly be seen as learning organizations, which Senge aptly defined as "a group of people who are continually enhancing their capability to create their own future."
Thought Leadership, and Breakthrough ideas.......2007-08-27
I found this book highly simulating but required heavy study to transfer the ideas into the working environment. I found the framework was incomplete especially around the issues of creating a learning environment. Senges' framework for Systems is best described in terms of 'systems dynamics' which leads onto a more developed theory by others on system complexity and emergence.
He describes what might be an end state without detailing how to get there, the later follow up field book on tools and methods now fills this gap neatly. Both books together are perfect.
This book sets out theory very well, it also provides Thought Leadership, Breakthrough ideas and Inspiration. Its well written and enjoyable.

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.
How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.
Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

Good, Practical, but not Bible! .......2007-10-19
The Five Love Languages, by Dr. Gary Chapman is a good, practical, and helpful book in the arena of communication in marriage. It is very good at helping people to see the way their spouse is wired, and how make inroads to communicate in a way that the spouse understands affection. The five "love languages" that Chapman asserts are Quality Time, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, Recieving Gifts, and Words of Affirmation. Perhaps the greatest aspect of this book is Chapman's explanation of the "in love" and "out of love" stage that most in the world today seek after. He shows that this isn't true "love" at all, but rather a temporary lust. While I have experientially seen first-hand a great improvement in my own marriage from the application of certian principles in Chapman's theory, I do see major weaknesses as well.
The most disappointing issue I see with The Five Love Languages is that from a Christian standpoint, and as a conservative Christian author, Chapman misses the best think he could share in a published work-- God's Word. Biblical references are almost non-existant in this book. Furthermore, God gives clear commands and guidelines in His Word for the basis of marriage and the roles that the husband and the wife are supposed to play. In addition, while Chapman is good at helping people express affection to one another, this is not truly, "Love" in Biblical terms, because those without the Holy Spirit to produce the Spiritual fruit of "Love" (Galatians 5:22), cannot do this at all. The greatest downfall to Chapman's book is that he never takes the opporunity to share that the greatest problem with marriage is sin, and separation from God-- and that the greatest solution starts not with commuicating better or helping your spouse feel "loved," but by a saving relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord of your life, and Lord of your marriage. In the end Chapman covertly shares his personal faith walk, but missed the perfect opportunity to clearly share the best thing that could transform not only marriage, but a person's life forever.
A fun book to read and apply.......2007-10-19
It was fun to read this book and think about my own love language as well as figuring out my husband's.
Communicating heartfelt committment.......2007-10-18
The goal of the book "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman is to learn how to communicate heartfelt commitment to your mate. The book achieves its purpose by explaining five possible ways (or love languages) people express and/or receive love. Armed with the knowledge of how to recognize and speak your mates primary love language(s) your mates love tank should hopefully never run low; resulting in a successful and happy marriage.
The "Five Love Languages" makes for a great suppliment tool. The material in the book only deals with one aspect of marriage (expressing commitment),and would be best used with a Biblical study on marriage (or relationships). This is a great tool, but shouldn't be the only tool in ones marriage tool box.
I feel there is a caution worth mentioning in regards to this book. The "Five Love Languages" is not a Bible study, nor does it express the foundational teachings of marriage in the Bible. The book doesn't explain the marriage covenant, God's teaches about marriage, or what the Biblical roles are of the husband and wife.
Insightful Book.......2007-10-17
Gary Chapman's book is very insightful. Not only do you learn your partner's "love language," but you'll understand yourself and others better, too. If you wish to convey appreciation and love to your spouse, family and friends, this book definitely provides effective measures for doing so.
Must Read.......2007-10-17
This book truly opened my eyes to the needs of my husband, and played a large part in saving my marriage.

I own the book and have even had a question answered by the author. The book is first rate. I highly recommend "Dummies." Its made me less of one!

Very helpful by its simplicity. Great as a quick reference in order to then go to Roberts Rules of Order for a more indepth answer.
Robert's for Dummies works!.......2007-08-25
This was actually for my wife, who is currently parliamentarian for a local non-profit organization, which she has some prior experience at. Nonetheless, as soon as the book arrived, she curled up and read it "cover to cover" and made a bunch of notes from it to share with others. Next thing I knew, she was putting her official Robert's Rules away in storage, so like many of the "Dummies" books, this seems to be the practical knowledge most of us actually need.
Robert's Rules for Dummies.......2007-03-08
Great way to get a fast handle on chairing meetings. The meeting I chaired after reading this book went so much smoother than the previous meetings. Would recommend this book for any new board member. Also provides a quick reference for seldom used procedural issues that arrise.
This book is a must have for presiding officers!.......2007-02-14
This book can easily be read cover to cover in one sitting, then can be used as a reference book for questions pertaining to parlimentary procedure. I especially appreciate the author's understanding of the psychology of presiding, not just the Rules.

This innovative text covers everything from how programs are selected to the limits of media programming.
Book Description
This comprehensive and engaging introduction to visual culture provides an overview of a range of theories about how we understand visual media and how we use images to express ourselves, to communicate, to experience pleasure, and to learn. Using over 175 illustrations, Professors Sturken and Cartwright examine how images - paintings, prints, photographs, film, television, video, advertisements, news images, the Internet, digital images, and science images - gain meaning in different cultural arenas, from art and commerce to science and the law, how they travel globally and in distinct cultures, and how they are an integral and important aspect of our lives. These images are analyzed in relation to a range of cultural and representational issues (desire, power, the gaze, bodies, sexuality, ethnicity) and methodologies (semiotics, marxism, psychoanalysis, feminism, postcolonial theory). Practices of Looking provides an explanation of the fundamentals of these theories while presenting visual examples of how they function. Central concepts such as ideology, the concept of the spectator, the role of reproduction in visual culture, the mass media and the public sphere, consumer culture, and postmodernism, among others, are explained in depth and in accessible, informative language. Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright provide the best introductory book for students coming to the study of visual culture for the first time. Truly interdisciplinary, this book aims to be the key text for courses across a range of disciplines including media and film studies, art history, photography, and communication media.

one of the best books about visual culture.......2007-09-21
The authors of this book very clearly articulate the considerable factors of the visual culture in mass media and visual art. Not only the pictures cited in the texts are also quite helpful to better understand the details of description, but also more importantly this book provides knowledgeable contents and information enabling readers to be aware of the significant roles of visual culture and how it is embedded in our lives, influencing the whole culture, society, industry and other many impacts of social forces.
excellent!.......2007-02-26
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in media studies. The language is simple and articulate. The authors provide plenty of visual evidence in each chapter. If you enjoy reading about popular culture, even advertising strategies- this is the book for you.
Practices of Looking: An Introduction to Visual Culture.......2006-03-25
I actually returned this book after leafing through it. It was a little disappointing and did not have much information other than common sense kind of info. Where was the meat?
Review of Chapter Nine.......2003-09-30
As a class assignment, I closely studied chapter nine of Practices of Looking, and researched several of the listed source materials. This chapter is entitled "The Global Flow of Visual Culture" and deals with the globalization of Western media, primarily in the form of television and the internet. The authors explore such topics as the history of media globalization, its effects on non-western cultures, pros and cons of the internet, and possibilities that new global technologies afford us.
This chapter was well-presented, persuasive, and useful. It offered a cohesive and informative discussion of a broad variety of topics, dealing with each one in satisfactory depth and detail. After researching a few of the listed sources, I found that while some of them seemed to be surplus to the actual chapter content, those that were used were, on the whole, represented accurately and fairly.
I recommend this book to anyone studying visual culture, due to its detailed and informative treatment of this broad and varied topic.
Brief on Practices of Looking (with emphasis on Chapter 8).......2003-04-26
In Practices of Looking, imagery in culture is shown to play on the way we perceive, initiate, and direct ourselves in our daily life. This book, indicates that we rely on imagery to guide us daily. This book explains how imagery is the most relied upon role model of today; basically, due to the fact that it is the most direct measure for a humans consumption of information. It provides input on how imagery sells goods through advertising, how images evoke personal memories, and how images can provide us with scientific data. In Society, Imagery can be found in all areas of the social arena. Influence of imagery is never counted alone in any arena. It is quoted in Practices of Looking "That images are never singular, discrete events, but are informed by a broader set of conditions and factors. The identity of science in correlation with imagery is explained in a wide spectrum of social engagements. Anything in the fine arts, film, television, and advertising, to visual data, can provide insight into the way we see things.
In Practices of Looking, written by Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright, mediums of influence and expression for Science and Imagery are identified in Chapter 8, Scientific Looking, Looking at Science. This chapter projects ideas with scientific imagery from the early 19th century to modern day. The chapter opens your eyes to the realization that we are constantly being fed ideas from imaging dealing with any subject matter. Whether the ideas are correct or not, most people today take the information and the images they see very seriously, especially when there are relations to science. Maybe due to the fact that science has proved itself in time, at least this is one opinion written in Practices of Looking; life science is seen as the "truth" and is accepted as objective knowledge due to the fact that doctors have a clearer understanding for the body through their experience. The understanding and the experience of Doctors is covered very thorougly throughout this chapter. It explains how imagery even comes into play in arenas we would never correlate influence from imagery, like (law and medicine). This chapter provides us with archival proof, predictions, perspective for current and past issues, time frames, and also developmental measurements. I found this book to be a great resource for understanding the influence that imagery has upon us in society. It really gives one a great look at the daily impact that imagery plays, and how it effects the publics outlook. I would definately recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about "how art and media plays a role in society".

Good Refernce book.......2005-11-12
Good reference book. It provids concepts and material important for graduate studies and industry. I recommand it.
Little bit disappoint.......2005-05-15
This has many typos, which can be frustrating in following the context. And I found out that the typos are different to other 2nd editions. Little bit disappointing.
A very technical book.......2005-04-21
I recommend this book for anyone pursuing a Certification like CWNA, CWNP or other wireless certifications. The technical concepts which are at the core of design, implementation, research, and invention of wireless communication systems are presented in an order that is conducive to understanding the general concepts, as well as those specific to current and evolving wireless communication systems and standards.
The Author has done a great job of explaining Radio wave propagation which has historically been the most difficult problem to analyze and design for, since unlike a wired communication system which has a constant, stationary transmission channel (i.e., a wired path), radio channels are random and undergo shadowing and multipath fading, particularly when one of the terminals is in motion. I particularly liked the chapter on modeling spatial-temporal channels, which is vital for the development of smart antennas and position location systems.
The appendices contain hundreds of mathematical formulas and identities for general engineering work.
The compilation of the major wireless standards makes this book particularly useful as a single source of information for a wide range of wireless systems that are commercially deployed today.
I gave this book 4 stars as I feel that the problems included in the book should have the answers as well.
Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP
One of the Best Book.......2005-04-14
This is one of the best book for this field!
Unorganized textbook.......2003-02-24
this book is not good for the beginner in wireless communication. I have to use this textbook, because it's the requirement form my instructor.
the author didn't organize this book as well as he should. All equations are not well explained...Sometime the students need to guess where this variable stands for or what parameter's meaning is. He wrote like the literature or drama.....no space for equation's explanation...all of them are in the same paragrah.
i really don't recommend this textbook and i still don't understand why my instructor uses this text

CAUTION: Does NOT provide an outline, NOT even a study guide -- this isn't the hardcover.......2007-09-21
CAUTION: Most of the reviews listed for this Cram101 really describe the real hardcover textbook. Don't make the same mistake that I did...I bought this softcover "outline" and it was the next best thing to being robbed. There are 65 pages in the book, 33 of those pages are blank (college ruled notebook paper) and the other 32 list unrelated, useless definitions.
Every other page in the book is blank (they say: so you can create your own outline). Wait! Isn't that what they claim that they are selling you here?? The description tells you the textbook is not included...well surprise, neither is the textbook OUTLINE!
The pages that aren't blank only list definitions (isn't that what the dictionary is for?) But even the definitions are worthless. They repeat the same definitions over and over (for example, 'accounting' is repeated more than 7 times--I counted!). Additionally, they define things that are not useful like the words: budget, inventory, users, license...etc). I had to check the title again, because none of this related to the real textbook on Data Communications & Networking!
I soon realized that the real purpose of the "book" is to get the buyer to go to the cram101 website and purchase more services. SAVE YOUR MONEY, there are no notes in this so-called book, in fact it would be cheaper to buy some ruled notebook paper and make your own notes from the hardcover textbook.
Sometimes you have to buy a book for school..........2007-08-11
It is what it is. It could have been a lot better but as it is required for my class at BU, I didn't have a choice.
Easy to read and understand.......2006-11-10
The business data communications and networking book is very to read and understand. The bold and italicized writing makes it easier to comprehend the communication being presented. The information is up to date and I'd recommend this book to anyone who requires a clear understanding of business data communications and networking
Great Introductory book for Networks.......2006-03-18
It's a great introduction to networking, with details about LAN, Backbones, and WAN architectures. It is also easy to read and Understand.
Almost, but not quite there............2006-03-17
I purchased this book for a class I was taking. It was the required text for the class. I have 15 years experience in network design and administration and recently returned to school to earn a second degree. I found this text to be overly technical for its intended audience, and would not recommend it to any instructor. Also the accompanying test bank from which an instructor can pull quiz/test questions are absolutely horrible and only serve to confuse students trying to learn.
