Customer Reviews:
Every student needs the Everyday Writer.......2006-07-25
This book is an ideal tool for anyone who has to write for school, work, or as a hobby. The easy access tabs and extensive menus help you find what you are looking for quickly and the spiral binding lets you lay the book open while you type. The coverage of the writing process and argumentative writing really set this book apart. Anybody can write up grammar rules or documentation standards, but Lunsford's coverage of writing at the start of the book is wonderful. Buy this book and don't sell it back to the bookstore, this is a keeper. Also, for the teacher that wants one for every student, try "Easywriter" which is the smaller version of this text that only costs about fifteen bucks.
I wish I could buy it for all of my students.......2004-03-22
A good friend who must really love me gave me this book when I headed to grad school. It answered all of my APA citation questions and many of the little grammatical quandries one encounters at 3 a.m.
I only wish I had the budget to buy this book for all of my high school students. Every young writer should have a guide like this to tidy up their work. Alas, at about $50 a pop, with a school of 350 students, this book is out of our range. If you can pick one up used or can afford a new copy you won't be sorry.
A student's perspective.......2000-06-01
As one of Andrea's former students, I've had to read this book and use it extensively. Not only did it get me through her class, but every class I had after that (and I've had a large number of English and History classes). If you're looking for a book to help you with MLA style, Professor Lunsford covers everything you can possibly hope to draw info from, including lectures, interviews, and even MUDs online.
This is a must have for any college student!.......1999-01-22
The Everyday Writer is a wonderful asset to any college English student. It contains all the essentials for writing term papers. I suggest that everyone who needs help in English should pick up this book.

A Book of Middle English
ASIN: 0472066862 |
Book Description
What kind of language did ordinary men and women use in the seventeenth century? Everyday English 1500-1700 addresses this question by bringing together and explaining more than sixty nonliterary texts from the early modern period, ranging from witnesses' depositions to church wardens' accounts, and from letters and journals to constables' presentments and scurrilous abuse shouted in the marketplace.
This unique source book of essential documents designed for courses on Early Modern English is designed as a teaching text with full guidance to each text, including glossary, explanatory and background notes, and suggested topics for linguistic evaluation. Everyday English takes an up-to-the-minute approach by focusing on language as it was used and spoken at the time.
This wide-ranging collection for the first time makes available to students a corpus of examples of the ordinary, nonstandard language of the man and woman in the street, coming from areas as diverse as England, Scotland, and America. The emphasis throughout is on providing as much assistance as possible to the reader to aid understanding and appreciation of both the linguistic features and the everyday lifestyles of the time.
"The only book a really conscientious teacher of the history and structure of Early Modern English would use for source texts." --Roger Lass, University of Cape Town
Bridget Cusack was lecturer in English Language, University of Edinburgh.
Book Description
From the irresistibly wry Larry Miller, a collection of sharp–eyed, trenchant, and very funny essays on the outrages of everyday life.
Larry Miller is one of the most enduring and irresistible comic personalities at work today. Hundreds of stand–up appearances on Leno, Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and other TV shows, and his unforgettable roles in films as diverse as Pretty Woman and Best in Show have made Larry's acerbic wit and character (he calls himself "a founding member of the Cranky Nit–Pickers of America") a staple of the American comic diet. And in recent years he has gained a new, more political following, penning a regular humor column in The Weekly Standard and making frequent appearances with TV hosts such as Bill Maher and Dennis Miller.
Now, in Spoiled Rotten America, he fixes his gaze on the outrages of contemporary life – from "pop stars thinking deeply and sharing their thoughts" to "pillow–soft Americans who stop by the Pizza Hut before collapsing into the Wide–O–Lounger just in time to watch 22 pimple–faced steroid–eaters slam into each other at 14 miles an hour."
Mixing the political with the personal as deftly as P. J. O'Rourke or George Carlin, Larry Miller is today's new voice of outrage for the little guy – for "anyone who walks into the backyard at night, lifts a proud chin, and screams, 'I am not wrong!' before going back inside to resume getting quietly hammered while his wife sits in the next room watching figure skating."
Customer Reviews:
funny to the point of being silly.......2007-08-05
This is a very funny book. However it goes beyond reality into the surreal. A very enjoyable read.
so funny and true!.......2007-06-02
I heard Larry Miller on a local radio talk show and he piqued my interest to read this book. I was not disappointed. He is funny, smart and comes at the reader from all angles. It is intelligent and very basic at the same time. My daughter saw me reading it and I read her some of the passages --she in turn shared some of it with a friend of hers and both of them couldn't wait until I finished so they could borrow my book. I loved it!
Even Better Than I Hoped For.......2007-04-15
I first became aware of Larry Miller in that sperm bank movie with Shelly Long. I don't want to give away his character, but he's terrifically funny in an innocent and understated way. That one scene where he's at his desk had me rolling on the floor.
His book is much the same way - he doesn't go for the cheap laughs. His essays are intelligent and insightful with wry looks and observations mixed in with thought provoking views. One minute I was reading over a paragraph for the third time and still cracking up hard enough to bring tears to my eyes, the next minute I was wrinkling my brow to think about my own view on something.
He's irreverent and understated and what makes him so amusing - to me - is that even when he's commenting on humanity's misplaced priorities or foibles, he juxtaposes himself almost self-deprecatingly. Only, it's obvious that he's got greater understanding and awareness than what he's speaking of. But you never get the feeling that's what HE thinks.
So the mix is masterful: intelligence, humility, irreverence, thought provoking-ness (I couldn't think of the word so I made one up), understatement, and a certain unflappability....it's definitely a repeat read!
Some good material . . . .......2007-03-21
A little too self-serving and preachy at times. Still, worth the read, if you know Mr. Miller and his brand of humor.
Larry Miller, American Hero.......2007-01-27
I will never forget Larry serving broccoli in our college cafeteria. The food was so bad I used to get about 6 servings with lemon and butter. Larry let it pass because he knew I was starving. Me and a lot of guys owe our lives to him.
Book Description
* Each character is shown in both simplified and traditional form, along with its pronunciation and meaning. Information is given about the radical (essential for finding it in a Chinese dictionary) and other components. The character configuration and stroke order are clearly shown, along with other tips to help form it correctly. A grid of practice squares for each character page allows the user to build confidence in writing Chinese.
* Several compounds are also listed for each character. Each of these is likewise accompanied by its pronunciation, meaning and an example sentence (also transliterated and translated). These compounds and sentences build vocabulary and give extra practice in reading Chinese. All compounds are listed in an alphabetical index at the end of the book for ready reference.
* Each set of 10 characters is followed by a quiz containing a variety of imaginative exercises to review and practice the recently learned characters.
* Each set of 50 characters is followed by a "Character Building" section designed to build familiarity with identifying radicals within characters, a Review of vocabulary learned, and a Word Puzzle as an enjoyable way of revising the material covered to that point.
Customer Reviews:
Buy it if you want to learn Mandarin characters.......2007-05-13
This book will give you a very good start to character literacy. It should be used in conjunction with a program that gives you practice in pronunciation. (I've not found one shoe that fits all.) I'd recommend buying this book and v.2 along with the separately published Pimsleur CD's.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
This book is absolutely one of the two keys to learning Mandarin. (The other is the Pimsleur programs.) I never thought I'd learn this challenging language, even though I'm conversant in three LOTE already; but this book is helping me learn how to write in Mandarin. It also has each new character or word in various contexts to show shades of meaning, which is really important in a tonal language.
I highly recommend this and its companion volume, 1, along with the Pimsleur program, which I'm sure you can get on Amazon.
Get the flash cards instead.......2007-03-09
My only issue with this book is that it is almost completely redundant with the flash cards (Chinese In A Flash) offered by the same author and publisher. I have found the flash cards to be a much more effective way to learn Chinese characters, and so am disappointed about having also purchased the book. Although the book does sometimes include a sentence or two about a character's origin, which could in principle be useful for remembering that character, these sentences usually refer to the traditional character rather than the simplified one, and are usually too brief and simplistic to be of much use anyway. So my advice would be to buy the flashcards instead of the book - they contain the identical information, but in a more compact, easy-to-use format.
A fine way to learn Chinese Characters.......2007-01-31
I love this book. If you're looking to get started on the written Chinese language, I really can't think of a better source of instruction. Each page consists of one single character. For each character every stroke is broken down, the character is explained and half the page is empty squares of practice space. You can also buy flash cards that go along with the book. Writing in Chinese is the best thing ever and if you've wanted a good starting spot then here it is. After you finish this one there is another book of 250 more characters. I like this, it's good and it does me well.
Highly recommended for people at right stage of study........2007-01-21
I love this book.
I am learning conversational Chinese and pinyin, and even gaining a basic knowledge of the Hanzi adds a whole new dimension.
Not only do I find learning the charaters fun - they really are quite beautiful things - but quite often I have 'penny dropping' moments where something about a character fills a gap in my understanding and things make more sense. As an aside, I am amazed at how logically Chinese works, and am so glad I don't have to learn English.
To be clear, I would not recommend this to someone with NO knowledge of Chinese. You need to HEAR the language and pronunciation first and foremost.
But even at my basic stage (around a 450 word vocab), starting the Hanzi is wonderful. I had actually picked up the 'first' 100 or so just by studying pinyin and looking at the Hanzi supplied, but being given the stroke order is a major help.
One small suggestion for the author or editors if they ever read this: Adding some arrows on the diagrams to make it 100% clear which way some of the smaller strokes should be drawn would make it even more helpful.
xiexie Mr Lee.

Customer Reviews:
I am so glad that I finally found this book ..........2007-08-20
I came to the United States as an adult engineering student with a F1 visa. I could read my textbooks in school, but I could hardly understand some of my American classmates/friends when they used some strange and incomplete expressions in their conversations. I had never seen these English expressions in my English textbooks. The things became worse after I graduated from school and joined the work force. Sometimes my American coworkers asked me some questions using some of these strange and incomplete sentences, and I had no idea for what they were asking for and how I should answer their questions properly.
I found this book,
<
>, about two weeks ago from the local library. After having read a few chapters, I realized that the strange and incomplete expressions, which I had difficults to follow, are "Common American Phrases". American people do not speak the whole sentences out, since these phrases are so common that everybody understands them. But these phrases are very difficult for an ESOL/ESL foreigner to follow.
I am so glad that I finally found this book.
non-recommendable book.......2007-03-09
I will positively be heistate to recommend this to other probable buyers becuase this book is composed of contents it is not helpful to learn English expression.
In addition, this book loses my common and prevalent idioms.
I don't like to recommend all of you to get this book.
Good for those who only recently arrived to the United States.......2006-04-30
...and also for those who have at least advanced or intermediate skill in English language. In my case I bought this book hoping to enrich my general conversational vocabulary. I have NOT achieved my personal goal since the book is full of most simple phrases that are very quickly learned from daily communication by anyone who lived in the US for more than 2 months (Thanks! Sorry 'bout that! See you! How you've been? and similar.)
However, I found this book to be particularly helpful in terms of idioms and expressions that are otherwise not clear to a non-native English speaker even in context (drop the ball, gone out the window, let's touch base tomorrow, and similar phrases.)
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is new to the country and needs to master the American slang and daily communication.
That is just what I (a ELS student) Want !!!.......2006-01-05
I watched a lot of American Movies and Sitcoms. There are too much expressions that I cannot really understand ~! They are all composed of simple words, but when they are together, I just cannot get it. Like "Might as well","who do you think you are kidding",and tons of others....This book explains a lot to me. The entries in this book are really used very frequently in American Movies and on TV. I heard almost all of them before. It teaches me much more than my ESL classes !! ELS students ~buy it and Enjoy it !!
Good for Foreign Adults.......2005-09-13
I have very intelligent adult students who are trying to improve their English. Most of them are from East Asian backgrounds. This book is very much enjoyed by my students because it gives them an insight into phrases that people use around them often. Most people don't realize how much they use these phrases. Moreover, we don't realize how strange they sound to non-native speakers.
Book Description
America swears by it!In the English language, swearing is essential to effective communication. Whether you want to succeed in business, school, or social circles, a strong command of vocabulary is absolutely necessary. Just imagine a stranger to our shores, trying to comprehend the following conversation: John: Mary, would you like to attend the opera this evening?Mary: F*cking-A. should I wear my black dress?John: Why the f*ck not?Mary: F*cked if I know-Oh, f*ck! I just remembered. It got f*cked up in the wash.John: Well, f*ck the opera. Let's stay home and f*ck.Mary: Good f*cking idea.English as a Second F*cking Language (ESF*L) is the perfect way for nonnative speakers to learn the basics of swearing. At the same time, it also offers native speakers a wide variety of twists and new refinements. Page after page, ESF*L provides a smorgasbord of swearing synonyms designed to boost your vocabulary-everything from the conventional d*mn and sh*t to a host of more inventive terms that would make any truck driver blush. And when you're finished reading, our Final F*cking Exam is the perfect test of your swearing skills. You'll be surprised by how much you've learned!

Great Book.......2007-01-09
one of the best books out there to read. very usefull and insightful
Fun Book - Good Reference for Non Native English Speakers.......2007-01-04
This is a book which has a funny approach on everyday language. Words and sentences that once seemed to have no sense at all are now explained. While the meaning of these expressions might be widely known for native speakers, it is a good reference for foreigners who are willing to excel in English language, even in its weirdest senses.
Funny but very short.......2006-12-24
This book is less than one hundred pages, in large print, with an odd page size. In other words, it's more a pamphlet than a book. For the price, I found the brevity very disappointing.
However, the concent was extremely funny, and did teach me at least one rather delightful phrase I had never heard before.
Learn how to swear.......2005-08-24
Well... at least you know what it means when others are swearing ;)
not for ESL.......2005-02-04
I bought this book to help some of my ESL students to understand how/when to use American swear words.....however, it is definitely not a good reference in that sense. Although it IS funny, it is more of a narrative and not a resource.

Great for traveling.......2007-07-28
This book is great if you are traveling to Italy and don't have time to take a class to learn the language.
Gerard F........2006-03-31
This book is worthless, even for $2. Very outdated (phrases about telegrams). I returned it. Buy Rick Steve's Italian Phrases instead. It is more compact and current (asks how to send an e-mail, not telegram).
Pretty bare bones phrase book.......2006-03-23
This was the cheapest phrase book that I saw offered on Amazon.com and, as trite as it is, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for the most basic of interactions with Italian speakers and are only planning on staying in tourist hotels and shopping in tourist markets, then this might suffice. However, if you are planning to interact with native Italian speakers in a less superficial way, or if you want to be able to express yourself with somewhat more sophistication, I would recommend another phrase book.
Easy equals Beginner.......2006-03-02
This book is too large to fit in your pocket. It has normal size type but lots of space between the entries. Check out other options and you will find a smaller, more useful reference.
Absolutely out of date Almost useless........2001-03-16
I had to look at the publication of this book. I thought it might be 1930. The section on Customs is really foolish. No one arriving in Italy needs to learn those foolish sentences about "This is for my personal use", "where are customs?" The train section is useless. Where is the smoking car? You select the type of car you want WHEN YOU BUY YOU TICKET. So old fashion! It is not useful for Italian of today.!
