Complex but filled with useful information on ethical though.......1997-08-17
Have used the book for two years in a college level management course. Material is complex forcing the student to read and think. Text covers many ethical principles that are usually not contained in business ethics books. Cases are thought provoking
Product Description
The passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 has had sweeping implications for professionals involved in financial reporting, ranging from certification of financial reports by chief executives to a mandated study by the SEC of principles-based accounting standards, rather than rules-based (which is clearly the current state of affairs for financial instruments accounting). Financial Instruments: A Comprehensive Guide to Accounting and Reporting is written for practicing accountants and other professionals who need to understand the accounting for financial instruments. This unique book pulls together all of the existing accounting literature on financial instruments into one volume, organizes it logically, and describes the requirements as simply as possible. This comprehensive, topic-based approach will save practitioners time and effort in researching accounting issues. It includes guidance issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the FASB's Emerging Issues Task Force and Derivatives Implementation Group. It also includes standards issued by the AICPA Accounting Standards Executive Committee, and the audit and accounting guides issued by various committees of the AICPA. This guide covers accounting requirements for public and private companies and touches on unique aspects of reporting financial instruments by nonprofit organizations. Over 400 pieces of authoritative literature are referenced in this book. Each chapter covers the relevant accounting questions for each type of instrument, including: - When and how to initially recognize the instrument in the balance sheet - How to measure the instrument in subsequent periods - How to recognize income or expense - When and how impairment must be recognized - When the instrument should be removed from the balance sheet - What disclosures should be provided in the footnotes. The text includes visual aids whenever possible; observations, such as differences between instrument types; practice point
Customer Reviews:
Great content, very practical........2007-03-08
I am an NLP coach and I found this book really helpful. Lots of practical advice which includes case taking as well as scripts. I am getting great feedback and results from my clients! I recommend it highly!
Scripts and strategies .......2005-01-18
Allen collates both his previous volumes of collected Scripts and Strategies in Hypnotherapy together in this work. Many inductions are included and a few deepeners. Rightly, most of the work is concerned with the business of therapy itself. Many situation-specific ego-strengtheners are included, as well as sections on common issues such as pain management and anxiety. The ever-popular smoking-cessation, fear-management and weight-control receive large chapters of their own which I have found invaluable in my Central-Manchester, Wilmslow and Romiley clinics.
Previous reviews of the two separate volumes have always touted the scripts as off-the-peg verbatim scripts and frameworks around which to base a bespoke item for the client. However some of the scripts come over as a little too specific for undiluted use, causing me to go through with a pencil making notes.
Part eleven is entitled Therapy Strategies and includes tips for dealing with abreaction, age progression, re-framing, anchors etc. and each of these tactics is dealt with very well. However that is what they are; tactics (or gambits), not strategies. Therapeutic strategy involves various decisions such as "when is it useful to switch from a behaviouristic approach to a classic-dynamic one?" or "should I address the symptom or the cause (or both) in this particular case?" or "how can I most usefully model the direction(s) of causation between the different aspects of this complaint? " etc.
The majority of the scripts, allude to and reflect various strategies as, necessarily so, each script must be based on some paradigm or another. The only exception being the smoking cessation pages where the strategy and paradigm are discussed specifically, (e.g. Aversion vs. Coercion?)
Due to the name of the book, I expected to see some alternative potential conceptions of the nature of each presentation along with their respective interventions, but that's not what the book is all about. The formatting decisions of choosing a large font, and starting each new script on a new page, strongly hint at the book's ultimate purpose. It looks clean and is easily read allowing easy, quick access in the consulting room. After a short introduction to hypnosis it's just cover to cover useful scripts. An index would be welcome, as would be a more complete synopsis of each script, but ultimately the complete re-formatting of the two volumes of `Scripts and Tactics in Hypnotherapy' has made it much more convenient and better value. Now offering twice as many scripts per pound (or Dollar)!
It's to the point.......2004-06-02
It's to the point, tells you what you need to know without all the filler stuff. Lots and lots of scripts. This one is a keeper. Great information to the hypnotherapist. If you are not using this book in your office then get it. Everything that you need is in this book. I don't know were to start, it has everything for any kind of session and even some that I have never seen.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent & expedient service.......2006-07-13
The textbook was brand new and was wrapped in cellophane. Class began the following week, and the book arrived that week-end which gave me enough time to complete assignments in a timely fashion.
Great Resource.......2005-10-10
I used this book in my MBA program. This is a very good resource. It is researched based with many articles that are relatively short and to the point.
A excellent collection of the classic readings........2000-12-24
The editors of the book have included in a single volume the classics. The articles include those authored by Kurt Lewin, Chris Argyris, Edgar Schein, Gareth Jones, C.K. Prahalad & Jeffrey Pfeffer besides many others. The latest edition published in 2000 include 16 new readings. Useful resource material for students of organisational behaviour and organisational change. The strategies described in some of the readings could be usefully applied in a variety of work settings. HR practioners and those in human resources development will find some of the articles valuable in crafting policies and renewal of training strategies. To sum it, in the words of the editors, "The field of organisation development is fun and exciting. We hope this anthology will convey some of that sense of excitement." I have discovered that sense of excitement when I read the articles in the book. I will continue to refer to them from time to time.

Good Bang for the Buck.......2007-08-26
I really liked this book! It's one of the best investments I have made. I believe that it is cheaper and much more valuable than most financial advice you can get from a third party.
It starts with general advices on how to prioritize your needs. Then, as you continue to read, it tells you what options are there for you to do with your money. In particular, the author highlights ways for you to avoid common mistakes that could threaten your financial future.
I would recommend this book to anybody, particularly well paid professionals (doctors, lawyers, dentists, etc.), who are looking for a means of getting a good foundation for their financial knowledge and independence.
insightful, well researched, encouraging investment book: a must read.......2007-04-01
I am a physician who also enjoys teaching personal finances. This book should be a must read in every medical school curriculum. It is practical, full of insights, and easy to read in a weekend. I loved it so much, I bought a hardback copy as well so that I could loan the paperback to my colleagues. Although some of the advice is tailored to physicians, the book has valuable information for non-physicians as well. A great resource that is motivational as well as informative.
personal finances.......2006-01-05
An excellent account of money management and personal finances.
This book is the tool to build your personal wealth.......2006-01-02
Although the title implies it is for physicians, the book is truly a practical guide for all investors. It is useful for anyone who wants to save and build a dollar. The vignettes and bullet points are extremely helpful. This book will pay for itself many times over!

Customer Reviews:
Review of Organization Development 6th edition.......2007-09-02
This book is a great resource that provides the history of Organization Development and an extensive overview of the field. There are tools and tips for interventions that will be very helpful in many change/improvement initiatives.
Fine.......2007-04-07
I got it in time, and hopefully it helped me get a decent grade in my course. The description of this book was similar to the condition.
Not clear that product was "low cost edition".......2005-09-11
I received the book I ordered; however, I received the "low cost" edition which basically means the paper is thinner making it more difficult to read because the print from the other side shows through. This was not clear in the description.
It's a Classic.......2004-11-02
I'm a little disappointed at those who were horrified at its age--the French and Bell book is a classic and it was updated in 1999. Anyone who is interested in learning OD should read the book and you will get a great foundation. Go from there to learn more about individual OD interventions or theories. Yes, Kotter's book is great, too, but Kotter speaks about leading change (only one topic in OD) or about leadership (another goodie but only one topic). If you don't know anything about OD, read this book. Because it was originally written in the 70s doesn't invalidate it; in fact, it shows how good it is.
how about some double loop learning ?.......2004-06-30
This is a flawed edition of a classic book.
Yes, it is historical in its overview. Yes it is dense with ideas and concepts. It makes readers think that OD/change management is hard work. But this is a good thing. Change aint easy, and intervening in people's working lives is serious business. Lets learn from the past. It also has lots of case explanations, and it does explain the theory clearly. I wouldn't let anyone who couldn't understand it near my consultancy work.
The criticism that it is dated is a bit more on the mark; not because the more recent stuff on change isn't there, it is, but it is tacked on to the material from earlier editions with no thought to the coherence of the book's structure. A shame; it needs a good, new third author who loves the original text to bring it up to date.
Despite the flaws, I give it 5 stars to bring the average up. Those who award it only one star do it an injustice. And, a lesson for the would be change agent, things in life, whether books or bits of our client organization are rarely wholly good or wholly bad..... (ok,ok).
Another good thing, compared to its competitors its small !

Book Description
From State to Market? examines the changing role of the French state in the economy between 1981 and 1995 and its impact on business. Professor Schmidt details the governmental policies of nationalization, privatization, deregulation, and European integration; illuminates the "statist" policymaking processes through which such policies were formulated and implemented; profiles the players, the administrative and managerial elites who share common state educational background and career track; and describes the changes in economic performance, capital structure, and managerial practice.
Customer Reviews:
Having read all the reviews, this is what I think:.......2001-10-03
I've read all the reviews of Schmidt's efforts on matter of European Integration. And here's what I think: She is destined to embrace the English model and the English model, I'm convinced, will embrace her. The two will be as one. They will be a European Union far more robust than anything concocted in Brussels. So I, for one, would like to celebrate that true union of politics and passion and hoist a glass to Schmidt and this English Model!

Let me tell you about this English Model.......2001-10-03
As I see it, the English model must be (and no doubt is, in Schmidt's extraordinary hands) smart, generous, and prone to displays of great good humor. The English model must display the kind of maganimous spirit that say, one brother-in-law might display to another brother-in-law if the latter brother-in-law were, say, a writer needing a place to stay in England.
May I know more about this English Model?.......2001-09-18
I've read through the review string, and I must ask about the referenced English model. Please tell me more. I know of course of Schmidt's work on French models and German models and the energy she devoted to the models of Italy and America. Before I endorse this new effort, I think we should know more.
Yes, but . . ........2001-09-05
I agree with most of what the earlier reviewer stated. Schmidt is definitely 5-star material. But her most recent efforts have in point of fact focused almost exclusively on the English Model, and with amazing results.
