Book Description

In their substantially revised Third Edition, McShane and Von Glinow continue the trailblazing innovations that made previous editions of Organizational Behavior recognized and adopted by the new generation of organizational behavior (OB) instructors. Acclaimed for its readability and presentation of current knowledge, this textbook's philosophy is that OB knowledge is for everyone, not just traditional managers. The new reality is that everyone -- sales representatives, production employees, physicians -- needs OB knowledge to successfully work in and around organizations. Organizational Behavior, 3rd Edition, is unparalleled in its ability to engage students by bringing cutting edge OB concepts closer to reality through the 'theory-practice link' approach. McShane and Von Glinow help readers connect OB theories to emerging workplace realities through hundreds of fascinating real-life stories from across the United States and around the world. McShane/Von Glinow's Organizational Behavior 3rd Edition also continues to be the source of the hottest topics, such as: workaholism, virtual teams, corporate social responsibility, Schwartz's values model, innate drives theory, workplace emotions, executive coaching, guanxi, appreciative inquiry, social identity theory, workplace bullying, workplace justice, and much, much, more.

5 out of 5 stars Great for tech managers.......2007-07-18

When teaching MBAs and executives, I generally do not use textbooks. But, faced with distance-learning students, I felt a solid text was a must. This an excellent guide into organizational behavior (OB) issues, especially for practicing managers who have technical degrees and no background in OB. McShane and Von Glinow have covered the field comprehensively, in a way that is engaging (even for managers) and gives more than a nod to multinational challenges. When I searched for global OB textbooks, this was by far the best comprehensive book - using it in the classroom, it has not disappointed in any way.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2007-02-10

A thorough textbook covering breadth and depth of organizational behavior. Solid research methodology, pertinent real-world application examples, interesting, applicable case studies, excellent student materials.

A new edition is due within the next year.

2 out of 5 stars No Chapter on Offshoring..........2003-12-22

To be fair, though, the book does have chapters on office politics.
In this book, Wen Ho Lee is innocent, and teams are the way to do things. This is a textbook for the masses who would be employees and not necessarily for persons who would be managers. It's already obsolete from the standpoints of absence-of-sense-in-corporate-governance and from the offshoring-all-the-jobs-not-nailed-down. Ingenuity is given short shrift and any idea-incubation process is turned into a team exercise (giving Edison as an example of teamwork - let's ask Tesla what HE thought). Missing: any chapter on having some semblance of cerebral cortex with regard to example-setting. Any such chapter could star object-lesson Jack Welch and the apparent gauge he must've been smoking to marry a corporate lawyer and then cheat on her (speaking volumes to his management tactics - which took no additional conscience - hollowing out the company, running up the stock price and then getting out before it imploded - however, with plenty to spend on alimony).
By the end of the course, either you'll be a good Stepford worker or you'll be a master at DiversitySpeak and will have the management job of your dreams. IN BANGALORE.

One star for the pictures, one star for the attractive cover. (Unfortunately, the tincture of ipecac was missing in my shrink-wrapped copy)

Book Description

Kreitner and Kinicki's Organizational Behavior, 6th Edition, continues its tradition of being up-to-date, relevant and user-driven. Kreitner and Kinicki's approach to organizational behavior is based on the authors' belief that reading a comprehensive textbook is hard work, but that the process should be interesting (and sometimes fun). Thus, they consistently attempt to find a way to make complex ideas understandable through explanations, contemporary examples, and/or learning exercises.

The cover again depicts the well known visual brand of Wolves. This remains a central theme because Kreitner and Kinicki see wolves as an instructive and inspiring metaphor for modern Organizational Behavior. Wolves are dedicated team players, great communicators, and adaptable. These are key success attributes in today's workplace.

3 out of 5 stars Organizational Behavior.......2006-02-25

This text book does an adequate job of looking at the topic of Organizational Behavior. For someone that has been in business for several years, there is not a lot of new information, good review and some common sense stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Must read book.......2005-07-29

For me this book had a great value. I used it on a college course after having faced the experience of being working on an IT company for 8 months. Actually I would say this book doesn't say anything anyone could not come up with; but I think that's as phylosofy is, common things we are used to, but that hardly we note to be able to do something about. I think this book is being very useful for me even after almost 3 years of be working, I think it helps you understand most of those frustrating situations we have to face daily on a company, allowing us to feel better on our work enviroment, be better partners on work, and make our work a little more productive. Definitly I recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Common sense in a bound volume.......2000-10-19

This book discusses a topic that is a grab bag of different disciplines and has nice illustrations but i dont know if it is worth close to $100. Anyone who has significant work history intuitively knows a bulk of the material in this book. The book could be condensed to include the hard data and scientific findings and leave out much of the intuitively obvious commentary. This book is no worse than scores of similar textbooks on 'soft'topics but with the way prices are going many students are captive buyers, forced to buy textbooks at the teacher's request for perhaps questions used in the book for grading purposes while the general info can readily be found in college libraries.

3 out of 5 stars Scholar's choice.......1999-09-20

The book may be a good choice for a scholar of OB. If you are a graduate student like I am, you may find it difficult to follow and overloaded with scientific terms. To my mind, the simpler the better, which this book is not.

Book Description

Organizational Behavior: Human Behavior at Work, 11e, was originally created 45 years ago by Keith Davis. This solid research-based and referenced text is known for its very readable style and innovative pedagogy. While minimizing technical jargon, Newstrom and Davis carefully blend theory with practice so that its basic theories come to life in a realistic context. As in previous editions, this edition will be filled with practical, applied advice.

5 out of 5 stars Critique of Organizational Behavior by Mr. John W. Newstrom.......1999-12-01

I like the book because it is complete and easy to understand. It gives a lot of insights on how one's behavior is manifested. The structured presentations are accompanied by real life experiences. It is an easy reference guide even for a novice in organizational set-up. The only part I would like to suggest is that the authors should show an answer chapter for the quentions given in the end of the chapters especially in the case studies. I find it very interesting to know how the authors would solve the organizational problems.

Book Description

This book combines management and organizational behavior. It is intended for students to learn how to be effective performers within an organizatoin, both individually and on teams. Because organizational behavior skills are students' dominant need under this assumption, about two-thirds of the book's content is anchored in traditional and emergent OB subjects, while one-third focuses on issues and practices that every manager needs to know.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not worth it at half the price........2000-05-30

This book is outrageously overpriced.

The major problem is that the authors drone on and on in each chapter about the same stuff. Most of the chapters would have been sufficient at half of their 30 page length. After about 15 pages and the third repetition of stuff that's already been explained, my brain started to wander. I'd have to go back and force myself to pay attention to what was being said.

Another major problem is the utter lack of editing performed. The sentence structure throughout the book is terrible. The syntax and choice of words is confusing. I'd have to re-read certain sentences several times before I could understand what the authors were trying to say. The English in general is also bad. Over and over, there were sentences that started with "But...". Then there were times when verbs were used as nouns, which is acceptable, but, because of the terrible sentence structure, it looked like they were being used as verbs. This made it almost impossible to read.

The only reason this book didn't get one star was the fact that some of the information was actually useful. The majority of the book, however, was just droll, boring repetition of stuff I didn't need to know in order to grasp the concepts. It also needed to have more concrete examples of stuff. It started out doing that well, but, by chapter 6 or 7, it just became too abstract. There must be a better book out there on this subject.

The new reality is that people in organizations -sales representatives, accountants, technicians, nurses, etc. - are assuming more responsibilities as companies remove layers of bureaucracy and give teams more autonomy over their work. McShane/VonGlinow's Organizational Behavior, 2/e helps every employee make sense of organizational behavior and gives him or her the tools to work more effectively within organizations. Book Description

Behavior in Organizations, 7/e, by Shani and Lau, is a paperback text that takes a hands-on, experiential approach to organization behavior. The majority of the exercises, role-playing simulations, and cases were developed in and for management training workshops. The cases themselves represent different industries and organizations around the globe with diverse size, product, service, and cultures. Instructors appreciate the multiple interactive teaching methods for each teaching module.

Experiential methods provide a powerful stimulus for learning, growth, and change by helping participants focus on their own behaviors and reactions as data. The text begins with structured, less personal exercises that are readily recognized as relevant to human effectiveness in organizational settings. Personal growth and self-understanding activities are introduced later in the text, after students have had enough experience to become more comfortable and ready for them.

The Organizational Behavior textbook by Dr A B Shani, the Chair of Department of Management at the renowned Orfalea College of Business, was every thing his students asked for in its ever-improving 8th edition.
The eloquently written text combined with his charismatic teaching style and in-class exercises not only stimulate students' yearning for knowledge, but also push his students onto the next level in becoming responsible and thoughtful human beings.

One benefit of this textbook is its pages are tear-able. This feature allows his students to only bring the pages of the day to class while leaving the rest of the textbook at home.

All in all, this book is definitely a keeper, one that I would reference back when I am leading a Fortune 500 firm.

I took a bachelors course on Organizational Behavior from Dr. Shani at Cal Poly in 1996. Since then, I have used the book as a resource in graduate studies and in my team and leadership development work. The experiential learning method is a fantastic method that works especially well with teams. I highly recommend this paperback. I would rate this edition higher but have yet to see the updates. If it is anything like the fifth edition, you will not be disappointed.

Milkovich and Newman? Do the other reviewer's have the right book As I right this review I have the book next to me and I can't find any reference to a Milkovich and Newman? Whoever these fine people are I can't see how they have anything to do with this textbook.

As for the textbook, I had to use it for my introductory Management class as part of my MBA program. And halfway through my MBA program this book gets the award for the dryest, boring, waste of trees. Yeach I've complained about Marketing, but this book is far worse.

Instead of explaining the intricacies of management and addressing contemporary issues in the typical office, this book focuses on stating the obvious, restating it again, without offering any arguments, any conclusions, or even giving any advice.

Consider this typical sentence, which I found by randomly opening the book. 'As previously indicated, conflict may have either positive or negative consequences for the organization, depnding upon how much exists and how it is managed.' (pg. 358).

When they aren't boring the reader with their lack of depth and insight the authors bore the reader with stupid asides on companies that add nothing. Consider the following sentence, 'The 13,000 restaurants in McDonald's network all pay attention to quality, service, and cleanliness.' (pg. 41). You mean the authors find it necessary to teach MBA students how to serve fast food? I thought that was the reason kids enroll in these programs so they don't won't end up working in a fast food joint.

This book was so bad, that some of my classmates gave up even trying to read the chapters, because they weren't getting anything out of it. And although the material is very elementary it's written with so much filler material that it is extremely hard reading. It as if the authors were paid based on how many words they were able to write, so that the book would look thinker and the publisher could justify it's outrageous list price.

And the worst part is that the material is so disorganized that some of the information in the chapter summaries isn't even covered in the chapters. I'm just glad I only had to put up with semester of this trash.

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Torture.......2007-06-04

This book is about inflicting pain on the reader. It is incredibly difficult to understand and absorb the ideas presented in this book, as the author has a dull, long-winded, and pedantic writing style. Requires rereading many sentences, often just to understand the sentence structure itself, let alone its meaning and context within that section of the book. I can't believe the author intended this as an introduction to Organizational Behavior.

1 out of 5 stars An awful textbook!.......2006-02-05

This was one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It drones on in excruciating detail for pages before finally stating the main point or idea. People don't think that way. State what you're talking about and then give the supporting details and examples. Not the other way around. It is a very frustrating read. I had to reference other resources in order understand the theories and concepts presented in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly difficult to get through..........2006-01-11

I used this book for an Organizational Behavior graduate course. The overall topic is very interesting, however, the book is incredibly hard to get through. It seems that all of the long drawn out chapters could be cut down easily to a tenth of their size, while still conveying all the necessary information. I found myself spending several hours reading each of the chapters, only to find that the same information was just being regurgitated over and over again. And I had to read many of the sentences over and over until they made sense. Though such an interesting topic, it was difficult, time consuming, and frustrating to get through the whole book.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible book!.......2004-02-11

I thought this book was one of the worst textbooks I have ever picked up. The best thing about it was finishing it! Organizational Behavior is not the only class I am taking and yet I poured way more time and effort into reading this book than it deserved. It is NOT student friendly. There are no callouts and I simply believe there is a better way to deliver this information than I experienced in this text. That's not to say there isn't a ton of good information in it, but that it's poorly organized and assumes that the reader is familiar with organizational behavior and will know the references the author names by last name only. Also, the entire first chapter was spent telling the reader what he will learn in the remaining 17 chapters. Get on with it. Throughout, the author continues to reference what the reader will learn in upcoming chapters. STOP IT. Revise this piece of junk to something more student-friendly. When I am a teacher, I will not come close to asking my students to use this. I do not recommend this book for someone who is not planning on becoming an organizational behavior major. If you're a teacher, please don't ask your student to read this. Terrible.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......1999-05-17

Fred Luthans presents OB in a great light. While his text has many, many meta-data studies, it does provide a clear and concise view of OB.

A very good textbook for an introductory class on OB.

    Book Description

Organizational Behavior knowledge is for everyone and not just traditional managers. The new reality is that people in organizations –sales representatives, accountants, technicians, nurses, etc. – are assuming more responsibilities as companies remove layers of bureaucracy and give teams more autonomy over their work. McShane/VonGlinow’s Organizational Behavior, 2/e helps every employee make sense of organizational behavior and gives him or her the tools to work more effectively within organizations. McShane/VonGlinow’s Organizational Behavior text helps students understand and influence behavior in organizations by showing the connection between contemporary OB theories and actual events in organizations. This theory-practice link relies on real life examples to help students understand OB concepts. Anecdotes and stories effectively communicate the relevance and excitement of OB by bringing abstract concepts closer to reality. The new and improved 2nd Edition features such hot topic areas as: workplace bullying, adaptive cultures, personal career development, further developments on appreciative inquiry, executive coaching, drum circles, a new model of active listening, and workplace romance plus many more.
