Book Description

This text is appropriate for those courses with an emphasis on e-commerce and the Internet, as well as short courses or MBA/IS courses that want a modern approach. Networking has changed dramatically over the past ten years. Most texts have focused on network layers and their concepts and then on how the different technologies are implemented; however with the number of viable technologies shrinking, it makes less sense to focus on concepts first and technologies second. Networking in the Internet Age first edition integrates the discussion of concepts and technologies so they appear in one place, organized by layers.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars not helpful at all.......2007-03-09

The delivery was good and the wrapping was good, but I dont advice anybody to buy this body because it doesnt help at all.
The notes have nothing to do with the book or even networking in general. I would sell it if it was worth it. It is better to buy an empty notebook instead of this book. At least you would expect it to be empty instead of full of notes that have nothing to do with the book at all. Also the same notes get repeated over and over for every chapter.

2 out of 5 stars In Need of Editing.......2003-10-18

A very technical, academic-style text, apparently thrown together hastily with little concern for clarity. Many chapters are riddled with typographical errors, some of which (particularly in the diagrams) outright mislead the student.

As a student, reading this book regularly put me to sleep, but that may say as much about my interest in the material as it does about the author's presentation of it. Or perhaps the author just likes putting people to sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Good textbook.......2003-01-09

I'm using this as a textbook for my Network Technologies classes for MS IT and MS IM graduate students. I also found this relevant to MBA students as I teach another class at the Graduate School of Business entitled, Network Technology Management. The structure of the topics is excellent; however I normally postpone discussing the Internetwork Layers (TCP/IP, routing, etc.) only after the discussion on the Internet. Students relate better with the more technical stuff on routing and TCP/IP that way.

Book Description

"The computer world is like an intellectual Wild West, in which you can shoot anyone you wish with your ideas, if you're willing to risk the consequences. " --from Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham

We are living in the computer age, in a world increasingly designed and engineered by computer programmers and software designers, by people who call themselves hackers. Who are these people, what motivates them, and why should you care?

Consider these facts: Everything around us is turning into computers. Your typewriter is gone, replaced by a computer. Your phone has turned into a computer. So has your camera. Soon your TV will. Your car was not only designed on computers, but has more processing power in it than a room-sized mainframe did in 1970. Letters, encyclopedias, newspapers, and even your local store are being replaced by the Internet.

Hackers & Painters: Big Ideas from the Computer Age, by Paul Graham, explains this world and the motivations of the people who occupy it. In clear, thoughtful prose that draws on illuminating historical examples, Graham takes readers on an unflinching exploration into what he calls "an intellectual Wild West."

The ideas discussed in this book will have a powerful and lasting impact on how we think, how we work, how we develop technology, and how we live. Topics include the importance of beauty in software design, how to make wealth, heresy and free speech, the programming language renaissance, the open-source movement, digital design, internet startups, and more.

And here's a taste of what you'll find in Hackers & Painters:

"In most fields the great work is done early on. The paintings made between 1430 and 1500 are still unsurpassed. Shakespeare appeared just as professional theater was being born, and pushed the medium so far that every playwright since has had to live in his shadow. Albrecht Durer did the same thing with engraving, and Jane Austen with the novel.

Over and over we see the same pattern. A new medium appears, and people are so excited about it that they explore most of its possibilities in the first couple generations. Hacking seems to be in this phase now.

Painting was not, in Leonardo's time, as cool as his work helped make it. How cool hacking turns out to be will depend on what we can do with this new medium."

Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the Macintosh computer, says about Hackers & Painters: "Paul Graham is a hacker, painter and a terrific writer. His lucid, humorous prose is brimming with contrarian insight and practical wisdom on writing great code at the intersection of art, science and commerce."

Paul Graham, designer of the new Arc language, was the creator of Yahoo Store, the first web-based application. In addition to his PhD in Computer Science from Harvard, Graham also studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional book, unconventional author, surprising points made.......2007-10-19

The book particularly deals with the nexus between programming, creativity, social commentary, wealth-generation, business-personal-entrepreneurial psychology (his specialty!) and LISP-related stuff. I skipped the programming sections because Im not a programmer. The philosophical commentary was better than 90% of other philosophy books I've read, more cutting and more true-to-life.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-09-07

Paul Graham is very clever (and rich - is that relevant?), however light also bends around his ego. Whether the sum of these qualities is positive is not absolutely clear to me.

If you want to read the best thing that he has written, you might be better served by his book on advanced Lisp programming, which is a monument anybody can be proud of - it comes close behind SICP on my personal list.

And, if you do read this book, I suggest you also look at 'The Science of Art' by Martin Kemp, which gives another perspective on the maybe slightly overweighted metaphor of the title, and the relation between theory and practice it implies.

2 out of 5 stars Airport mall book.......2007-08-11

In spite of the strong desire to punch the author in the face after finishing the book, there are many great truths inside. Basically why is it that most people think salaries on the same position should be the same if work results differ in orders of magnitude.

Also it's funny to see an ultra-capitalist criticize the western decadent corporate structure. It's The Market for Lemons all over the place.

Don't expect to find anything useful to make a dot com startup on this book. It's all anecdotes from his experience and his quasi-religious views. It's more rhetoric on Lisp than business.

As another reviewer said, read first his online essays before diving into this.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but don't believe too much.......2007-07-29

I was entertained and greatly appreciated the view of the author but the many times I completely disagreed (due to very substantiated reasons) made me skeptical of several ideas of the author. But, the reasons for him holding those views is, in and of itself, interesting. He does have several good and controversial ideas and his experiences are quite valuable to read. Most of the time, I found myself flying high with him as he stated things that really need to be said which ran against conventional thought. Other times, I found myself raising my eyebrows in bewilderment. After all, it really is a book about his thoughts so take it as such. His book, his soapbox.

The book reads well but really trails off towards the end. I found myself finishing the book just so I could say I was through with it. The opening chapters are quite entertaining. Read a few chapters that you find interesting and leave it at that.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but dont expect to learn much.......2007-07-20

This is a nice little, light book that you can read after a hard day's coding and yet keep smiling. The language and style of writing is really good and makes reading quiet effortless. The topics being probed are of course bound to make you think. I would say, read this collection of essays to help you ponder further, but dont take the opinions too seriously.

Book Description

This eye-opening, fact-filled book profiles the rise of the Net Generation, which is using digital technology to change the way individuals and society interact. Essential reading for parents, teachers, policy makers, marketers, business leaders, social activists, and others, Growing Up Digital makes a compelling distinction between the baby boomersÕ passive medium of television and the explosion of interactive digital media, sparked by the computer and the Internet. Tapscott shows how children, empowered by new technology, are taking the reigns from their boomer parents and making inroads into all areas of society, including our education system, the government, and economy. The result is a timely, revealing look at our digital future that kids and their parents will find both fascinating and instructive.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Almost unreadable...a quaint artifact from an earlier time.......2003-09-16

There were many annoying things about this book. Perhaps most annoying is that he never really talks about economies, and just blathers about gee-whiz technology in a rapid fire manner. He doesn't really penetrate much into the technology, nor bothers to say how it is really going to affect economies. The book is full of pre-9/11, pre-internet bubble euphoria, and never spends any time fully exploring its interesting premise.

Certain the internet and communication technologies will effect the economy, and anyone trying to get any real insight here, beyond that it will make the world a better place and lots of people are going to make more money (stated over and over again), will be greatly let down.

The effects of technology on economies is better described elsewhere, such as "The Innovator's Dilemma" and other books that understand both economics and the relevant technology, something a "visionary" such as Tapscott has no time for.

Beyond providing insight into internet/technology mania of the mid to late 90's, I see no reason to invest time to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars New Economy Genre.......2002-12-30

Tapscott helped create the genre of new economy books with this effort. If he did not coin the term new economy he certainly helped to popularize it. Tapscott is an internationally sought after consultant, writer, and speaker on the subject of information technology. Technology related issues of the new economy are prominently featured in this book. Tapscott's clarity and broad domain expertise make The Digital Economy an extremely informative read.

He was one of the first authors to introduce the idea that communications, computing, and content were all converging into new media. His business transformation through new media model wherein the effective individual leads to, the high performance team which leads to, the integrated enterprise which leads to, the extended enterprise which leads to, the inter-networked business which leads to ..., clearly anticipated the current eBusiness model rage, where the integration/collapsing of the supply chain is the road to competitive advantage.

Even though (at the moment) New Economy thinking has fallen out of favor, Don will be proven correct on many fronts and this book will stand out as one of the most relevant portraits of this (still) emerging landscape.

5 out of 5 stars To understand how Digital Economy is transforming businesses.......2002-07-05

Even if the book was written in the mid 90 it still gives the bases to understand how Digital Economy is transforming our businesses and lives. Don Tapscott is clearly explaining that after Total Quality Management TQM, Business Processes Reengineering BPR we enter a new era where we will be asked to literally transform our businesses and lives.

The convergence of computing, telecommunications and content is a real revolution, giving access to a networked economy working in real time and without knowing distances. This means that boundaries are exploding. Learning is becoming a continuous process and part of our day to day work it is why Digital Economy is often called Knowledge Economy. Customer is integrated in the production process and organizations are moving from a vertical integration to extended networks including customers, suppliers and more and more often competitors. We are far from the industrial hierarchical organizations where we are working now.

Don Tapscott is helping us to understand the New Economy 12 themes supported by the 10 technological shifts and the move from individual effectiveness to the internetworked businesses through high performance teams, integrated organizations and extended enterprises. But finally he is convincing us that as part of an internetworked leadership, we are collectively responsible to achieve the transformation of our businesses for a better life promised by the New interactive Economy.

Don Tapscott is also helping us to evaluate impact of the Digital Economy on our business work, on our education systems, and on our governments. The interactivity is transforming the media industry and asking a new leadership for our businesses.
Don Tapscott doesn't forget to discuss the peril of the Digital Economy from privacy protection to electronic democracy.

Digital Economy is a real knowledge spring where you come back regularly to improve your understanding of the surrounding growing New Economy.

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental reading.......2001-11-06

Fundamental book that reveals everyday changes in our life. Must reading for everyone who wants not to be left out.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-05-30

Don Tapscott provides an overview of the way the digitalization of information is transforming the economy and projects the likely changes ahead from his perspective in 1996. The book suggests ways to exercise leadership effectively in this transformed, networked world. However, since this thoughtful, well-organized book was written several years ago, it is mainly of historical interest now, because of the rapid changes in the digital world. Still, it is useful to apply some of the themes Tapscott developed when you consider how the digital economy is continuing to evolve. ...recommend this well-written book for a general audience as well as executives and managers who are interested in the unfolding of the new economy.

Book Description

For companies in and around the telecommunications field, the past few years have been a time of extraordinary change-technologically and legally. The enacting of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the development of international trade agreements have fundamentally changed the environment in which your business operates, creating risks, responsibilities, and opportunities that were not there before.

Until now, you'd have had a hard time finding a serious business book that offered any more than a cursory glance at this transformed world. But at last there's a resource you can depend on for in-depth analysis and sound advice. Written in easy-to-understand language, Telecommunications Law in the Internet Age systematically examines the complex interrelationships of new laws, new technologies, and new business practices, and equips you with the practical understanding you need to run your enterprise optimally within today's legal boundaries.

* Offers authoritative coverage from a lawyer and telecommunications authority who has been working in the field for over three decades.
* Examines telecommunications law in the U.S., at both the federal and state level.
* Presents an unparalleled source of information on international trade regulations and their effects on the industry.
* Covers the modern telecommunications issues with which most companies are grappling: wireless communication, e-commerce, satellite systems, privacy and encryption, Internet taxation, export controls, intellectual property, spamming, pornography, Internet telephony, extranets, and more.
* Provides guidelines for preventing inadvertent violations of telecommunications law.
* Offers guidance on fending off legal and illegal attacks by hackers, competitors, and foreign governments.
* Helps you do more than understand and obey the law: helps you thrive within it.

Who would have known that a book about telecommunications law could be this interesting?! The author deserves credit. She has both technical background and she is J.D. too. Wonderful examples. It is book worth saving for future reference.

1 out of 5 stars Consider other Internet Search Books for Technical tips.......1998-07-01

If what you are seeking for are real technical search tips, consider the following 2 books: Web Search Strategies, by Bryan Pfaffenberger, Mis Press, 428 pp, 1996, ISBN 1-55828-470-2, The AltaVista Search Revolution, 2nd Edition, by Eric J. Ray, Deborah S. Ray and Richard Seltzer, Osborne McGraw-Hill, 395 pp, 1998, ISBN 0-07-882435-4, On both you will find plenty examples and suggestions of how to improve or refine a search, while on Reva Basch's Secrets of the Super Net Searchers, you will have to distill more than 300 pages to gather some technical advice, from its purely verbose interviews. The only technically usable sections of the book are its Appendix A, with a List of about 100 Referenced Sites and Sources, and the book's main Index, where more information on some Search Engines, can be dispersely gathered and located among the interviews. What Reva Bash presents is a collection of personal points of view and general advice of how to keep up to date and seek new information, via the Web. A significant number of interview questions where centered on services like DIALOG, LEXIS-NEXIS, CARL, NETTRAIN, WAIS and Gopher, and almost none on "Super Net Searching Engines" as the reader could expect from the book title. The 35 interviewed professionals, includes specialists on independent research, academic librarians, educators, corporate researchers, web-masters, writters, consultants and net pioneers, but none of them actualy involved on any of the major Web Search Engines, like AltaVista, Lycos, Infoseek or Yahoo. The final impression is that the book was written to other Super Net Searchers interested on knowing a bit more of some colleagues own experiences and points of view, but with no clear advise rules emerging as a consensus for the common day by day Internet use after all.

All too often we look at the subject of technology as a complicated topic outside of our normal scope of activity. Sandy Berger shows how technology is meaningful and relavant to our daily lives. Suddenly the term technology has become a user friendly topic. this book has helped me discover ways to make my life more interesting and has made me more comfortable with computers and technology.

5 out of 5 stars Great Age Guide to Better Living Through Technology.......2005-12-16

This book gave me the courage to finally purchase a digital camera/printer setup. Sandy gives you step-by-step insructions in PLAIN ENGLISH, no computer-ese. And just when you have a question, Sandy answers it -- she speaks our language (the Boomers!).

4 out of 5 stars introduces many topics to newcomers to the Web.......2005-09-30

Berger talks in plain language, to demystify the use of various technical items. She writes for a still large crowd that is new to much of this. Naturally, the bulk of the book explains how to use the Web. She shows some of the myriad resources available, from geneology to sharing photo images.

For searching, she describes the main search engines, Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. For Google, she gives a sidebar on how the word derives from 'googol'. But, like so many other texts, it does not analyse this further. 'Google' is also a pun on 'goggle', where that means to look at something and gape. (Goggles are spectacles, in a related meaning.) Why is it that so many writers can't go beyond Google's official explanation of its name? The name is actually quite ingenious, and more so than just their explanation.

Anyway, on other topics, the book spends time showing how to use music, as in buying it online. Or in subscribing to satellite radio, say. Plus, she brings to your attention various sites that hobbyists might frequent, for such activities as scrapbooking and geocaching.

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down.......2005-09-17

I just started reading this book and I can't put it down. I thought I knew a thing or two about computers, technology and the Internet already, but there is so much more. And I'm finding a lot of it here in this book. I just don't know how to find the time to play with all the new suggestions and ideas in here for me, and the whole family. I look forward to reading the other books in the series when they are released. Keep them coming.

    Book Description

Is your e-business secure? Have you done everything you can to protect your enterprise and your customers from the potential exploits of hackers, crackers, and other cyberspace menaces? As we expand the brave new world of e-commerce, we are confronted with a whole new set of security problems. Dealing with the risks of Internet applications and e-commerce requires new ways of thinking about security. Secure Internet Practices: Best Practices for Securing Systems in the Internet and e-Business Age presents an overview of security programs, policies, goals, life cycle development issues, infrastructure, and architecture aimed at enabling you to effectively implement security at your organization. In addition to discussing general issues and solutions, the book provides concrete examples and templates for crafting or revamping your security program in the form of an Enterprise-Wide Security Program Model, and an Information Security Policy Framework. Although rich in technical expertise, this is not strictly a handbook of Internet technologies, but a guide that is equally useful for developing policies, procedures, and standards. The book touches all the bases you need to build a secure enterprise. Drawing on the experience of the world-class METASeS consulting team in building and advising on security programs, Secure Internet Practices: Best Practices for Securing Systems in the Internet and e-Business Age shows you how to create a workable security program to protect your organization's Internet risk.

    5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2002-07-30

Any manager who lets his technical people build a security program without the rational kind of road map this book offers is asking to be "owned", that is, to be hacked, his Web site defaced, his firm's data trashed. Never, never wade into the muddy waters of cybersecurity without a good plan.

This book is that plan: risk formulas, the nature of the threats, key tenets of a security program, key steps in constructing one, important policies to have, key steps in formulating a policy, key goals in information security, kinds of architecture to consider, kinds of infrastructure that underlie the program, steps in the life cycle for developing a secure system.

Talk about comprehensive. A great way to introduce yourself to security from a high level view or to start building security for your organization.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for techies, managers, and execs!.......2002-07-30

I especially like this book because it gives the IT shop and the security professionals lots of ammunition for getting funding and support from the "business" side of the business. Too often, the business executives don't understand the technology in question, and therefore do not comprehend the extent of the threat to the enterprise. Because this book is written for a "high level" business audience, among others, it presents issues like risk assessment and extent of the threat in ways the average businessman can understand. It even has sections like "Gaining Support" meant to help IT get management and funding on its side, without which the most carefully thought out plan isn't going anywhere, given that it's the executives who have the clout to make things happen in an organization!

5 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered.......2002-07-29

Just what the doctor ordered. Finally a clear road map for setting up computer security at a corporation.

Lots of organizations are clueless about what is needed to set up an effective defense against hackers. This book provides the clues, in a clear, jargon-free, and easy-to-understand manner. It lays it all out step by step.

It sketches the nature of the threat hackers pose. Then it tells you, phase by phase, how to put together a security program. It lays out a so-called Policy Framework on which to hang you secure password policy, incident response policy, asset management, vulnerability assessment policy, you name it, along with the technical procedures - tightening up UNIX, getting software patches for Windows XP, etc. - that flesh out the policies. A formula for figuring out risk is offered. There's lots of useful stuff on how computer architecture fits in with security, and how life cycle development should incorporate security into it.

There actually can be a rhyme and a reason to formulating security policies, and this book lays it out.

    1 out of 5 stars Incoherent.......2002-07-02

The book really does not carry enough meat to call it well written. It contains way too much fluff and more than anything, it is quite confusing, leaving you with a not so clear vision of Secure Internet Practices.
An overview of a high level security program can be presented in a much better manner. It leaves you with the impression that there is no consistency throughout the book. It is more a collection of ideas that are half baked. Presenting them in a generic high sounding format makes it look really bad. I think that the easiest solution for Security professionals to realize that not everyone has a clear handle on Information security is to buy this book and read it.

5 out of 5 stars Distilled e-Commerce "Operational Continuity Suvival Skills".......2002-01-14

    Book Description

Since the earliest days of our nation, new communications and transportation networks have enabled vast changes in how and where Americans live and work. Transcontinental railroads and telegraphs helped to open the West; mass media and interstate highways paved the way for suburban migration. In our own day, the internet and advanced logistics networks are enabling new changes on the landscape, with both positive and negative impacts on our efforts to conserve land and biodiversity. Emerging technologies have led to tremendous innovations in conservation science and resource management as well as education and advocacy efforts. At the same time, new networks have been powerful enablers of decentralization, facilitating sprawling development into previously undesirable or inaccessible areas.

Conservation in the Internet Age offers an innovative, cross-disciplinary perspective on critical changes on the land and in the field of conservation. The book:

Conservation in the Internet Age is the first book to examine the links among land use, technology, and conservation from multiple perspectives, and to suggest areas and initiatives that merit further investigation. It offers unique and valuable insight into the challenges facing the land and biodiversity conservation community in the early twenty-first century, and represents an important new work for policymakers, conservation professionals, and academics in planning, design, conservation and resource management, policy, and related fields.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A remarkably well-written book.......2002-12-13

I am interested in both new networks, American history and conservation, so I was not surprised that the content of this book was so strong. I WAS surprised that it was so well-written and that the connections between the past and the future were so thoughtfully drawn. I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Imporant and interesting insights.......2002-11-01

The book fills an important void by asking whether the Internet and might affect land use in the United States-particularly whether it could have dramatic and largely negative consequences on large habitats in previously rural areas.

At first glance, this connection is not obvious. But, as Levitt notes, virtually every significant innovation in transportation and communications technologies (such as highways, telephones, and electricity) have spurred decentralization.

Starting from this premise, the various contributors offer readable, in-depth analyses of whether the Internet is having such impacts and, in an interesting twist, how organizations concerned about habitat preservation can tap the power of the Internet to further their goals.

The result is a volume that should be read by anyone interested in the intertwined fate of rural communities and the natural habitats that surround them.

5 out of 5 stars CONSERVATION IN THE INTERNET AGE - FASCINATING.......2002-10-18

A very valuable and thought-provoking read, both personally and professionally. The book's historical sweep is impressive. Its range of contributors is also very broad and impressive - while I follow a good bit in the environment and conservation, this book offers many perspectives that I had not considered previously. A good book for those who love the dynamics of history, are fascinated by technology and its leaps, who protect and manage natural resources.

The book takes on the vexing questions of "When does change realize progress? And when does it not?" By juxtaposing nature and man's interaction with it, with the rapidly changing world of high technology, the book requires consideration of these questions. CONSERVATION IN THE INTERNET AGE makes one inclined to believe that people serious about the directions of land use and conservation need to be thinking about what Leviit calls "new networks." (I certainly didn't know what this meant before reading the book!) Overall, the book provides hope that new analysis and communications technologies will advance prudent long-term protection of land, water, and other natural resources.
