A great starting point.......2007-06-26
With most new products you have to start somewhere and for those that are familiar with SP2003 but have no idea with 2007 or are new to SPS2007 then this is a great starting point to learn the architecture behind it all a reference guide to assist when you not 100% sure on doing something as an administrator.
Not for developers.......2007-05-13
Great book for pre-sales and administrators. But too much information in this book does not give crispy answers to questions
Sharepoint encyclopedia...........2007-05-05
It discusses everything you need to know with regard to MOSS 2007 but never really makes a point or stands out in any area. I read it and I feel like I am reading an infomercial about it and at times it lays out things you can do but it is not focused or useful in terms of diving into Sharepoint functionality or pointing out ways to actually get anything satisfying accomplished.
if you use MOSS 2007, you need this book!.......2007-04-11
This is the "real" documentation for MS Office sharepoint server 2007. I believe they should have included a pdf version with each licensed version of the server.
Contributing Authors Make it Worthwhile.......2007-04-11
When the "principle" author turns the writing reins over to others, the contents of this book becomes worthwhile. Unfortunately, that does not happen often enough. In reading this book I am reminded of the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Hobbes asks Calvin why he is not going to school. Calvin replies that he is just going to go on talk shows and hype himself.
Don't buy into the hype. If you do, you are going to feel very lonely with this Administrator's Companion. Scot Hillier's books, although they have a developer focus, offer a lot more than this book does for the administrator.
Book Description
The Developer's Guide to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 teaches developers how to build solutions that leverage the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS v3) platform. Many developers are not yet familiar with this platform and its capabilities, so the fi rst few chapters focus on the out-of-the-box experience and how to secure solutions built on top of it. From there, the book explores some of the key aspects of the WSS v3 platform and how to leverage them for building applications. Throughout the book, practical programming solutions using real-world examples are used to illustrate the possibilities of SharePoint and to teach developers how to build their own applications. Some application components covered include Features, Site Defi nitions, Web Services, Web Parts, Events, and Workflows. The book also teaches how to migrate from 2.0 to 3.0 and to work with the object model and built-in WSS Web Services in various settings. Developers who want to usurp the fundamental capabilities of WSS v3 rather than building those facilities themselves will fi nd everything they need. The book doesn't attempt to cover the capabilities of Microsoft Offi ce Server System 2007 (MOSS), but MOSS is based entirely on WSS v3 so all the examples found in this book can also be used in that environment too. In fact, everything covered in this book equally applies to WSS v3 and MOSS. While this book attempts to bring developers from the ground up, any Web-based .NET programming experience will prove helpful in understanding the concepts presented within. The C# language is used exclusively in the text but there are comparable VB.NET code listings on the CD-ROM.

Not my kind of book.......2007-07-23
I would recommend "Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 " instead of this book. That book feels more upto date with the subject.
Great Development book from Bleeker.......2007-06-23
Todd Bleeker is enthusiastic about SharePoint, and it shows. This book is a great resource for people wanting to get up to speed with programming in SharePoint 2007. Todd gives a lot of examples and lots of background on the subject covered. I'm not a developer and I could understand the book and was able to follow along and even use some of the examples.
If you want to get your feet wet with SharePoint programming, you can't go wrong with this book.
Good resource for beginner, but many typos error!.......2007-05-07
For WSS v3, the new version of SharePoint product, it's not easy to find a good book. Yes, you can download the SDK. But somehow it's not a good start point for beginners! This book was the first one did a good job on providing guidance for the beginners of WSS developers. Even over, it show us many different aspect of programming for WSS, such as Event Receiver, Custom Field Type, and Web Part.
But this book contain many typos error! The publisher did introduced many error!? Very often, you must go to the CD to find the correct code or Fig.
But I still recommend this book. Very valueable! True.
Not impressed.......2007-04-25
I have read more than half of the book and am very disappointed with the content. He spends far too much time explaining how things were done in SharePoint Services v2 and then how they are different in v3. I was hoping for more information about how to do things in SharePoint v3 but there is not enough meat to actually get in and do anything.
SharePoint Developer's Guide.......2007-04-14
This book is the best resource I've found for SharePoint development. It has 3 chapters dedicated to Web Part development for which I am grateful. Sometimes the turorials don't match up to the IDE but I have been able to figure out what I need to do.
It is apparent that this book was put out to market before it was truly ready, yet I am grateful that it exists imperfectly or I wouldn't have any good resource for developing with SharePoint.
The author provides a website to address erata including a forum which he responds to at times. The website has helped me get over some tutorial problems mentioned above.
The book is definitely worth the money; the examples have saved me considerable pain and frustration.

Very helpful.......2007-09-21
Recommended for "Power-Users," or those people that are comfortable working in Office, etc. Not for techies, per se, and perhaps a bit much for the average user. Get it for those people that will comfortably read a 300 page book on a computer program and then actually do something with it. Don't get it for those whose permissions you wouldn't dare leave without significant restrictions.
Has been very helpful to me as someone new to SharePoint. Only 4 stars because it's a bit much for the average user that we have in our organization -- I 'm not sold that I could distribute this as a User's Guide and expect increased understanding of how it works from the typical user. Perhaps it takes this much detail to present the information, but the lack of a general "how-to" or "quick-start" section makes me think that most users will be intimidated by the size and scope of the book and never crack it open.
However, from a Power User perspective, this book is excellent. The writing is clear and well-organized. I've been able to find just about everything I've needed to understand and answered most questions that have come to mind. I like how the book presents the different choices available, without shoe-horning you into the author's preferred choice. Comparing it to explanations available online, the information it typically presented better in this book.
Excellent book for various skill-level users........2007-09-07
This book is easy to use both as a learning tool and a reference tool. The many examples provided give good background on the context of the desired function, and explicit, step-by-step instructions. The book has lots of "usage" suggestions.
Decent SharePoint 2007 User's Guide.......2007-08-20
SharePoint 2007 User's Guide definitely touches on the many topics necessary for the end users to learn the MOSS productivity platform.
Overall, the book is very informative. My only complaint is the style that it is written doesn't include any examples/exercises for the user to follow. There are definitely how-tos in this book, however, there are more examples for what can be done and not how to do it especially in the waning chapters of the book. There is very little useful hands on in the chapters regarding Document Management and Collaboration.
Regardless, it is still a good short reading and if you are new to SharePoint you will get much out of it.
If you are interested in a more robust read try Beginning SharePoint 2007 from Wrox. A book on the same topic with much more useful content.
Valuable reference guide to make the most out of SharePoint functionality.......2007-08-05
We have learned our lesson that the more we customize in SharePoint 2003, the harder it is to upgrade to SharePoint 2007. Going forward, we want to leverage more of the out-of-the-box functionality and stay away customizations. This is a great reference book for making the most out of SharePoint. If you know the functionality you want in team-collaboration sites (e.g. project team site, deal site, product site) or information-sharing sites (e.g. research & publication site, HR & benefits site), it is a valuable resource to understand various building blocks and know which tool to use.
I do not recommend this book for developers, but found to be useful for power-users, business analysts, functional analysts, content managers, MsOffice specialists or anyone else who wants to learn what you can do with SharePoint.
A bit of a disapointment.......2007-07-09
For a technology book, it's well below par.
The majority of the content in this book is just a repackaging of the help available in SharePoint; and much of that is pretty well obvious. I knew zero (nothing) about SharePoint before getting this book. I found that the organization and presentation of information in the book didn't parallel any sandbox/tutorial workflow, nor did it approach topics from any broader "good design" perspective. To date, well more than 90% of my SharePoint answers have come from the web, not this book.
The chapter on "list concepts" was helpful, and probably saved me some time and effort. For that alone it was worth the $26. But overall, I was hoping for a better book based on the early reviews I read (Note: only the April-07 reviews were here when I bought the book).
Book Description
Workflow is the glue that binds information worker processes, users, and artifacts. Without workflow, information workers are just islands of data and potential. Workflow in the 2007 Microsoft Office System details how to implement workflow in SharePoint 2007 and the rest of the 2007 Office System to help information workers share data, enforce processes and business rules, and work more efficiently together or solo.
This book covers anything you're likely going to need to know -- from what workflow is all about, to creating new Activities; from InfoPath forms to ASP.Net forms; from the Rules Engine to the object model. There's even a section on integrating Office 2003 clients with SharePoint 2007 workflows. You'll come away from reading this book with solid knowledge of how to implement workflow in the new world of Office and SharePoint.

Crutial Information about Asp.Net Task Forms is missing.......2007-09-14
Wanted to know about aspx forms dev-n-dep for sharepoint 2007 workflows. Found no code samples online [all samples online talk about infopath :-(]. From the table of contents thought that this book will be good BUT unfortunately it is NOT. It is missing a crutial information about dev-n-dep of .aspx custom TASK forms.
This book explains about custom TASK forms using InfoPath BUT NOT USING ASPX!!!
Otherwise this book is excellent from Asp.Net dev-n-dep viewpoint.
Nice person.......2007-07-23
I read half of this book over the weekend when I didn't have the possibility to connect to the net and then it is useful. But it is a little bit to much screen dumps etc. and we inherit from this class and I don't know why or "I am not a good programmer" so for someone that wants a first introduction to Workflow in Sharepoint then this book or do some free web training can be recommended. For a deeper understanding of workflow this is not a book. Maybe that Sharepoint workflow book is not written yet.
Some good points that I like is the connection with Sharepoint Office and what the vision is as I am still having my customers running 2003 that is useful...
All the Essentials.......2007-04-27
I agree with many of the reviews already written. This is a well organized and to the point tutorial on workflows with the Office system. I skimmed through once to get the high level overview, and dove into chapter 6 to get into designing workflows in visual studio very quickly.
As was pointed out in another review, the author is 'conversational' but I didn't feel like it hurt the book at all. I guess that is a matter of personal preference. Overall, this book was very helpful and I would highly recommend it.
Fantastic WF+MOSS 2007 reference.......2007-03-27
I struggled with workflows, especially integreating the webified versions into MOSS 2007 Forms Server going back to the very early beta days. While I was able to get them to work, some concepts were hazy to me. David's book brought it all together with some fantastic examples. If you're new to WF, this first section will address the core concepts... no need to go out and get another workflow book. The three chapters on creating a custom activity, creating a sequential & statemachine workflow, and making it available over the web via Forms Server are fantastic.
Only reason I'm not giving it a 5 out of 5 is because the book is very conversational. A book of this type should be more reference, not "chatty."
Outstanding coverage of a difficult topic.......2007-03-14
I have been creating workflows in SharePoint 2007 since early in the beta. The process is challenging and - at times - frustrating. David has done an excellent job providing the details and examples necessary for developers to be successful. You will find answers in this book that are not available from any other source.

FOREWORD
In 1979, Christopher Alexander wrote his seminal book, A Pattern Language, in which he introduced an innovative yet practical language for architecture, building, and planning. Since then the concept has been applied to other domains, from computer science to user interface design. The fact that what began as an architectural concept has been extended and is still in use today is a testament to its value and validity. Simply put, a design pattern is a generic solution to a commonly recurring problem, whether for software, buildings, landscaping, or Web design.
Design patterns are particularly relevant to Web design because they are so critical to usability. One of the tenets to building a usable product is to support users’ mental models for how things should work. Consistency reinforces and helps build ease of use into a product as users learn over time how to navigate the product and build a mental model for how to per-form tasks. Design patterns are a means for capturing such best practices and provide a guide for implementing solutions in a consistent manner.
Design patterns can also help an organization scale as it grows. As former vice president of the User Experience and Design group at Yahoo!, I was faced with the challenge of creating effective designs for our ever-expanding suite of products and services with limited budget and head count. With the team growing rapidly and organized along separate product lines, designers increasingly worked independently of each other, and yet I found many to be solving the same design problems. Harvesting and implementing best practices became critical to Yahoo!’s ability to deliver quality design efficiently and consistently. Moreover, with Web design patterns established, the front-end engineers could create reusable, modular code, thereby improving quality and speeding up our development time as well as design time.
The authors of The Design of Sites often cite Yahoo! in their examples. These designs were based on extensive usability and ethnographic research, capturing the best practices identified. With Yahoo!’s broad product offering, the team has encountered almost every major consumer product and interface issue. With this book as a reference, you can benefit from what companies like Yahoo! have learned and apply them to your site, even if you don’t have a design and research team similarly sized and staffed.
User interactions on the Web are fluid and seamless. With a single click of the mouse, a user can be on a completely different site, which could have its own look and feel and interaction model. Thus, it is more important than ever that the design community understands, applies, and participates in the development of Web design patterns. The more widely common design patterns are used across the Web, the easier the Web will be for users. And that is a good thing for everyone.
To be sure, design patterns are no substitute for thoughtful design, which takes into consideration the constraints and context of its application. But design patterns should be the starting point for anyone designing Web sites and should be followed whenever possible. Designers can start with something known to work and modify or refine it as needed. Time saved from not having to reinvent the wheel frees up designers’ time to ...

More than simply patterns.......2007-10-08
This book was highly recommended in a presentation on UI design patterns that I attended. Until I bought my copy I didn't realize how extremely useful it was.
Unlike other UI design pattern books, it covers more than basic page/widget level items. These include types of sites (eCommerce, news, etc.), sections and pages (message boards, help systems, newsletters), as well as lower level items.
Less obvious, but more practical for those with little or no background in UI design, is that it distills a huge amount of research, best ideas/practices and general usability guidelines. This can be invaluable when creating new and unfamiliar web sites/pages/interface elements quickly.
This new edition ensures that it's more current in response though they make clear that for all the hype about new technologies, most of the basic patterns have not changed. Where something HAS changed, they note it.
Beyond the patterns are well written explanations of user (or their preferred term "consumer") centered design practices. Though there are many other books on that subject, it does make this almost a singular "one-book" resource.
Amazing book cover to cover.......2007-10-05
I bought this book on a whim after passing its unimpressive cover on the bookshelf several times. After looking through it, this book is absolutely awesome. It details the largest and most common design and usability issues that designers and users face when creating or revamping a website. The book then offers a variety of proven solutions to these problems. It's indexed well and very easy to hone in on specific issues.
Really awesome book - I'd say equally perfect for site developers, content writers, wireframers and site analysts.
Must to have on every designer's shelf........2007-10-04
It is the kind of dictionary for the web application designers. You can go by index, find the matching scenario and refer to it to for your problem. Very handy and all time useful.
Must to have on every designer's shelf.
Was hoping for some more fundamentals.......2007-09-29
I was hoping this book would have more fundamental design insights that could be applied to various situations. However, I found it to be a bit too obvious with samples and ideas based on common websites. The design points were ones anyone who browses the web could have figured out on their own. Essentially the book would use popular websites as models and say do your sites like this. There was no obvious indicator that these were even patterns per se. Just that these sites are popular so they must be the best way of doing it. That didn't seem particularly convincing when most sites design changes every 2-3 years. It also didn't highlight the shortcomings and tradeoffs you must make when choosing a particular pattern. Essentially this book wasn't much use to me since the websites I work on don't fit any of their models. I was hoping for a book where you can apply *fundamental* design patterns to all types of situations not just the specific ones mentioned (e.g. The best way to format entry fields, when to use a pop up versus show everything at once, how mnay items to show in a list, when to use pagination versus list scrolling, and the why's and hows and tradeoffs and all that stuff we consider when designing a web site.) I was hoping for something along the lines of the Microsoft style guide I read several years ago, but catered for the web.
Buy this if you are a serious web designer.......2007-09-22
If you are serious about web design, buy this book before any other technology specific book. The pattern oriented approach for web design, used in this book, is unique and very insigtful. It's style of providing a catalog of web design patterns is very similar to the famous "gang of four" book on software design pattern.
I also liked the way many popular web sites are analyzed and dissected to elucidate many design issues commonly faced.

Great for users and techies alike..........2007-02-09
I've often said that a good Dummies book allows me to get a broad understanding of a product or technology so I "know what I don't know". This title is a classic example of that... Microsoft SharePoint 2003 For Dummies by Vanessa Williams. It's a non-threatening use-focused coverage of SharePoint 2003 that is a good introduction to the topic at hand...
Contents:
Part 1 - Getting the Lay of the Land: Getting to Know SharePoint; Starting with the Basics
Part 2 - Central Portal Administration: Configuring the Portal; Accessing SharePoint
Part 3 - Portal Design: Matching SharePoint to Your Business; Managing Portal Content; Branding the Portal
Part 4 - Build It, and Hope They Come: Collaborating with SharePoint Sites; Document Libraries;
Part 5 - Power to the People - Engaging Employees with SharePoint: Managing Employee Relations; Mixing Up Your Marketing Mix
Part 6 - Throw Away the Spreadsheets: Expense Reports; Technical Uses for SharePoint
Part 7 - Maintenance: Monitoring SharePoint; Backup and Restore
Part 8 - The Part of Tens: Ten Ways SharePoint Adds Business Value; Ten Ways to Screw Up SharePoint
Index
Williams goes after two different audiences here, and I'm surprised she pulled it off. She targets the average power user who might have access to build a site on the SharePoint server. With this book in hand, I would agree that a motivated person could do quite well on their own. She also targets tech people who want an overview of SharePoint so that they can get started quickly. Normally you can't mix those two groups and come out with something that's acceptable to either. Again, I think she actually succeeded. If I were going to start building SharePoint sites for a user base, I'd have enough information here to get started with an adequate mental framework of how it all fits. I'm sure I'd quickly need the "1000 page book" (as she puts it) to start pushing the boundaries of what's possible. But for basic "I need something now" sites, I could do it with the help of this book.
I was also impressed that she dealt with the cultural issue of collaboration software. As a long-time Notes/Domino developer, I know and understand all too well that collaboration isn't something you can mandate or force on people. People who get it will gravitate around the software right away. Those who view information as power will horde it and refuse to participate. And it doesn't matter how good of a developer you are or how slick the site is. The application will fail... By addressing these issues, Williams sets a realistic picture of what to expect if and when you install SharePoint.
Good material, and a good way to get your feet wet on SharePoint 2003...
Best book of its type on SharePoint 2003.......2006-12-22
I am a Microsoft trainer that has taught numerous SharePoint classes. Vanessa's work is the most straightforward intro book out there. She goes a step farther by including simple sample solutions for common issues. All this is a real help to someone trying to get things rolling. All SharePoint admins should keep several copies available.
Two thumbs up to the author..........2006-05-11
Being given the task of constructing an intranet for our company's service desk felt a bit daunting, but then being advised you're going to use Sharepoint 2003 (which I'd never heard of) just added to the pressure...
My initial reaction was that I needed to get "one of those books for dummies" on Sharepoint...I've never really liked reading and am still not the biggest fan, but Vanessa made it easy in the way she set out "Microsoft SharePoint 2003 for Dummies". You have the option or reading it from cover to cover, or jumping to the section that you're currently having an issue with. A real well structured and informative book.
After you've finished reading comes Q&A time...yes, if you have any questions for the author, she'll respond within a few days and be as helpful as she can...forget those geeks and professors that think they're high and mighty that they've written a manual or textbook, Vanessa is down to earth and will take the time to address your questions...I was semi-shocked when I received my first response, but then to receive a second, third and fourth blew me away...
So, for all you beginners out there, or even those that just need a point of reference, this book is a must for your shelf...
Sharepoint for Dummies helped a dummy like me!.......2006-05-04
Being a Beginner and having to teach myself how to use Sharepoint, I was stymied by many of the technical books on the subject. Finding Sharepoint for Dummies helped alot! Vanessa Williams book is easy to understand and answered many of the questions I couldn't find answers to anywhere else. I still have a lot to learn about Sharepoint and Ms. Williams has been very helpful to shed extra light on difficult problems. Thank you very much for all your help!

Customer Reviews:
Better for the Administrator.......2007-09-13
This book is great for the SharePoint administrator. Unfortunately, I'm the user creating and populating the sites rather than installing the server. There are a few sections for the user at my level, but I'd anticipated a Dummies book wouldn't be for the techies. I also wish it had more screen shots to demonstrate things, but I suppose it would wind up becoming a 1000 page book then. It's fine for what it is, and I did pick up some tips, so it wasn't a complete waste for me. I found SharePoint 2007 User's Guide: Learning Microsoft's Collaboration and Productivity Platform to be a bit more practical for my needs. I still haven't found THE training resource I need to help others utilize SharePoint the way it was intended.
Good to get you up-and-running.......2007-08-31
I was under the gun to assist a client in fine-tuning their new deployment of Sharepoint server 3.0. having alot of dba, lotus notes and asp.net experience helped, but this book is from where i pulled the specifics on WSS. it's a bit much trudging thru at first, but when you're 50-75% complete, you have a good understanding of administration and some development tips to get you started in the right direction. mostly, i found this book to be a solid reference guide to look back and quickly refresh myself with the specifics on how-to.

SharePoint 2007 For Dummies.......2007-06-27
I ordered this text with the intent of creating and modifying team sharepoint sites. Primarily "end-user" kind of work, however this text is far more technical than what I need. It is more for system administrator, not site administrator. I have since ordered "Sharepoint Designer X for Dummies". I think that will be more what I am looking for but it is not yet available.

Excellent book for SharePoint Administrators.......2007-06-15
This is a great book to get you familiar with what SharePoint offers and what it can do for your organization. The author covers everything from initial installation and configuration to setting up the SharePoint sites. She explains the terminology and concepts very clearly. Plus, she goes beyond the tech-speak and gives real-world examples of how SharePoint can be used and how to sell SharePoint to your organization (advantages for collaboration and communication). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about SharePoint and/or has been tasked with installing and/or administering SharePoint. Before you read anything else on SharePoint, read this book.
Excellent Book.......2007-05-15
This book is the best way to get into a solid understanding of MOSS 2007 and all the features of WSS. The author is excellent. Once again she proves that she is the best in thE biz. Her 2003 book was solid as well. I believe that anyone would find incredible value in her delivery, insight and guidance. This book is a must have for anyone looking at SharePoint 2007. I have bought this for everyone who is looking at MOSS 2007 or I have told them to pick it up. You cannot go wrong. This book is the best SharePoint book hands down.

Very limited.......2007-10-10
The book is very simple and does not bring much information on share point. Maybe it is just outdated.
I read it maybe a year ago and back then I didn't like the book.
You can read it in an hour, if that helps.
Quick Overview for Professionals & Nice Reference for End Users .......2007-07-20
What the heck is Sharepoint? We bought this book to help us find out. I've liked many of the SAMS 24-hour and 21-day books, but this is the first 10-minute SAMS that I enjoyed. This book has a 2005 copyright and addresses Sharepoint 2003, the release prceding the current Sharepoint 2007. Since the book is an introduction, it serves well even if you envision a Sharepoint 2007 environment.
As we reengineered our IT resources at our small technology company to run on Microsoft Small Business Server, we almost discarded the built-in Sharepoint-based CompanyWeb intranet. Just in time, we (I and one other experienced administrator/developer) took a closer look by rapidly exploring CompanyWeb using the twenty-five, ten-minute lessons in this book. Wow, we realized we could do so much with Sharepoint to improve our intranet. We quickly invested in four thicker Sharepoint books, but this is the book we will give to end users who are looking for something beyond read-only access to the documents and lists.
We learned that Sharepoint quite simply is a Microsoft server technology with an impressive set of tools for creating, viewing, and editing intranets. (Call them "portals" if they are comprehensive and well designed.) Sharepoint works just fine too for public web sites but so far has been promoted by Microsoft largely as a way to share Office 2003 and Office 2007 documents.
Use of Sharepoint encourages and almost ensures best practices for not just sharing but also collaborating on documents, lists (including contacts), discussions, surveys, links, and many more intranet elements. A wide variety of templates are available from Microsoft and others. Each of these intranet elements is a Sharepoint Web Part. Web Parts are enhanced ASP.Net pages with integrated assemblies of controls. The assemblies have properties and methods that permit easy runtime modification of content, format, and views by end users - in almost the same manner as end users can edit, format, and view Word or Excel documents. Most Sharepoint documents and other items can be automatically maintained in SQL Server databases (with version control and checkout if you need them) so you can say goodbye to huge assortments of poorly organized folders that are typically found in intranets, and this improvement in content management greatly eases an intranet administrator's burden.
Of course developers can build their own web parts using the sophistication of Visual Studio and all the power of the .NET Framework.

Simple, straightforward and easy to follow.
An excellent step by step guide, and a good reference manual.
SharePoint reference and starter.......2007-01-26
I found this book to be a godsend win I first started using SharePoint at work. It's small and easily tabbable. This book will get you off and running with SharePoint and how to use it. I recommend this book to all new personnel who come to my work. Great starter book.
The quick 10 min reference.......2007-01-10
This little book is big on reference. It will not give you the most comprehensive detail that a full tech manual would give you but, it is after all a 10 min. guide. The quick references and how-to's get you up and running on using Sharepoint 2003. It is an easy read for all that would deal with Sharepoint. The instructions are easy to follow and not written in a high techie vocabulary so it can even be used in training users in the use of sharepoint with office.

Excellent format with easy to find content.......2007-10-12
Was a little hesistant to get another in the "unleashed" series since I have been burned before with a lot of content that is dry and not pertinent to my environment. On the contrary, this is one of the best books I have seen on the new MOSS 2007 enviroment. It is clearly written and organized so that I don't have to search to hard for what I need and I can ignore what I don't.
A book for MOSS administrator.......2007-10-09
So far I have read 5 books about SharePoint 2007. This is my fifth book in this subject. This book is different. This book is for IT system administrators and not for developers. However, as a consultant for SharePoint 2007 development, I find that this book reveals the administration considerations I usually ignore. Therefore, my review is based on the uniqueness of this book.
Pros:
1. This book is an excellent resource for system administrators. It covers most of SharePoint administration I can think of. In addition, the authors provide guide lines for SharePoint migration, the integration of SharePoint 2007 / Exchange 2007 / ISA 2006 / Forefront, and farm planning. These are the gems of this book. You can not afford to skip the chapters about application of Exchange/ISA/Forefront in Internet SharePoint 2007 environment.
Cons:
1. Tables and Figures are printed in small fonts. I would prefer a bigger font size.
2. This book is around 800 pages, and is written for system administrators. If you are a developer, you might be disappointed because there are only a few lines of code.
3. The authors discuss the SharePoint infra-structure including Exchange/ISA/Forefront. However, the lab environment is not designed that way. So the readers who want to do exercise might be disappointed.
My personal recommendation: If you are MOSS and WSS administrator, you must have this book. If you are a versatile consultant, this book should be a good reference on your book shelf. If you are a pure hand-on developer and new to SharePoint, you might opt to choose code-intensive books such as Inside SharePoint Service 3.0 by Ted Pattison.
I rate the book four stars.
Best Sharepoint book I own...and I own 5 of them!.......2007-09-19
I bought this book as it is a complete overview of every aspect of a Sharepoint 2007 implementation than any other book I have. It covers best practices for everything from what kind of site template to use to what are the best security methods for your SQL database. Very thorough and the best book on Sharepoint 2007 out there. It is in depth enough to get the job done but not so deep that there isn't room for the entire project plan of a Sharepoint implementation.
If you are like me and the ONLY resource in your company for installing, implementing, administering and rolling out Sharepoint, this is the book for you.
Excellent overall coverage of MOSS.......2007-06-27
Are you looking for one book that gives you an overall view of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and its possibilities? Michael Noel and Colin Spence have managed to include ideas that were not possible in the earliest MOSS books. The first books relied heavily on beta-versions and some things were not available for the first books.
In addition to covering administration and basic customization of MOSS, SharePoint 2007 Unleashed contains very good sections on planning and installing MOSS. It also covers how to use Office applications with SharePoint. I especially enjoyed the chapters about Exchange 2007 and Office Communications Server. Both being relatively new, information in a concentrated form is hard to come by and this book gives a good overview on what to consider. It helped us alot!
Each chapter ends with a Best Practices section that provides some very good information.
If you need one book that gives you good, concise information about SharePoint Server 2007; I recommend this book!
Good book for admins.......2007-06-23
SharePoint 2007 Unleashed is a great reference for SharePoint administrators. I found it to have a great balance of high level planning information as well as detailed information that can be used as a reference once you've got SharePoint installed. What I liked best about this book was the breadth of subjects it covered. Noel and Spence aren't just experts on SharePoint, but other disciples. And it shows. This book covers not only how to get the most out of SharePoint, but how to use SharePoint with Exchange, MOM, ISA, OCS, the Office clients and more. The icing on the cake is the backup and recovery chapter. It includes a great script that can be used in small installations to use STSADM to back up all the Site Colletions in the farm. Very nice.
As a SharePoint administrator and SharePoint MVP I highly recommend this book.
