Mumble mumble through the audio.......2007-09-25
This review is for the audiobook - although the content is good, the author should have gotten a professional speaker to do the narration. It is so ironic to be unable to LISTEN to a book about listening because the author munches her words, chokes off a few, stops and starts here and there, and flips her pages over so loudly that it is distracting.
I find myself focusing on her bad delivery as opposed to her good content. If you're going to get this book, make it a printed one!
Good Content but horrible voice and quality!.......2007-09-13
The book that this audio adaptation is based on is very popular however this CD package is garbage. All the posts are about the book but not the 6 CD set. First off some people are NOT meant to be recorded and Madelyn Allen is one of them. They should have gotten a professional speaker to read her book. Sometimes you can't make out her words and also you can hear her moving or shuffling papers as she reviews her notes as she goes along. Very unprofessional and low quality. I ended up giving this to my mother to listen too!
Good Teaching Tool.......2007-01-11
I used this book as the basis for an in-service training for nurses and social workers. It presents useful information in a convincing manner.
listening behavior.......2006-08-11
Classic guide to understand and improve your listening behavior.
My highest recomemndation.
No-nonsense guide to listening for business.......2006-05-25
No academic cloudy language. Madelyn writes with perfect clarity, organizes her material usefully, and knows what she is talking about. The exercises are excellent. I use this book in my seminars and workshops on listening for business and government people. I give it my highest recommendation, and have no ties whatsoever to the author or publisher. Enjoy!

This revised third edition is your comprehensive personal guide to the most popular Praxis tests. It incorporates recent changes in Praxis testing.
TESTING STRATEGIES: Proven strategies for passing both multiple choice and essay/short answer Praxis tests
Customer Reviews:
Great Help!.......2006-12-31
This book not only has the exact type of questions that are on the praxis tests but also prepares you for the strategies needed while taking the tests. I found this book very helpful because it explained how essays are scored, the qualifications for each score and what you need to include in the written parts. Practicing with this book helped calm my nerves once that I saw the test was exactly how I had practiced it.
Great Book - but get the New Edition.......2006-01-06
This is a great book, but the new Fourth Edition is even better and this book should be replaced on Amazon with the new edition (white cover). The new fourth edition has more test material and a brand new CD with self scoring tests. The CD contains all the chapters in the book. I recommend How to Prepare for the Praxis with CD-ROM 4th edition by Robert Postman.
Limon
Sloppy.......2005-08-03
This study guide is full of typographical errors and factual inaccuracies. If you are taking the Praxis I, I recommend Arco's study guide. I found it to be closer to the actual test. If you are looking for a guide to any of the other Praxis tests, especially Elementary Education, don't get this one... keep looking.
Teaching Solutions reference from another reviewer.......2005-06-07
Another reviewer of this book advised the reader to use the products produced by Teaching Solutions. "Teaching Solutions is very good too at www.praxis-test-coaching.com." I did. Don't. The content material wasn't even readable...the definitions didn't make sense, the spelling was wrong, and I just went through the first couple of pages.
Here are two examples from the Business Education document they emailed to me.
1. Note the incorrect word usage of UNDERSTANDS in this definition: "The primary benefit of for profit corporations is that it offers its shareholders with a right to take part in the profits without any personal legal responsibility because the company understands the entire liability of the organization."
2. This one needs no explanation: "Deflation is the synonymous to inflation could be defined as decrease in price level of goods and services that result in increased purchasing power of money. Deflation is not always good for an economy of a country because it decline in the general level of prices in the economy"
I'm in the process of trying to get a refund...but so far, they are not answering my emails.
Well, Let me Explain the Unrevealed Praxis Secret.......2004-10-23
The book covered a lot of information. I know the Praxis content is broad. The practice questions were good. I don't know how someone could read the entire book during test preparation though. Teaching Solutions is very good too at www.praxis-test-coaching.com You can pass by applying the principles of both programs or software/ coaching. It's a must to follow the instructions of author.

THE Classic Shortwave book - needs updating, however.......2005-11-27
Absolutely fascinating introduction to shortwave radio listening...well written by someone very passionate and knowledgable about the subject! Not just a collection of dry facts about DXing but filled with Mr. Helms' personal stories and experiences that really make the subject come alive! It's all covered: Shortwave, AM/FM/TV DXing, Ham radio, maritime/utility broadcasting...it's all here. Now, why I am giving this book a "four" rather than a "five star" rating; this classic text BADLY needs an update as it was written in 1993. For example, I did catch myself wondering if stations really do still mail out QSL cards in this "online" day and age, and the section on using BBS is really very dated. Mr. Helms...if you happen to read this review, PLEASE consider revising/updating this CLASSIC BOOK - the Shortwave Listening Community will love you for it!
great introduction.......2003-08-08
This 1993 book is packed full of information still relevant to the hobby. It has helped me, a new shortwave listener, explore and get he most out of my new interest.
A superbly-written, thoughtful, and comprehensive guide.......1999-08-05
This is the ultimate hybrid of reference book and page-turner, thanks to Harry Helms' superb writing style. Prose is liquid, even in the sections that have a lot of reference information. Absolutely recommended.

Great introduction to Shortwave listening.......1999-03-25
As a newcomer to Shortwave listening, I found that Harry Helms' "Shortwave Listening Guidebook" has been the perfect introduction. It covers the technical aspects (such as the different parts of a shortwave receiver and how to use them, radio wave propagation, and antennas) in enough (but not too much) detail to be of use to the casual listener. There's an overview of the various shortwave bands, as well as what you may find between the bands. The many aspects of shortwave listening are covered, from listening to major broadcasters such as the BBC to such specialities as trying to hear distant stations, "pirate" broadcasters, and so on.
All in all, armed with both this book and "Passport to Worldband Radio", anyone should be able to enjoy shortwave listening.

Good Book.......2007-09-09
It was a good read to just confirm that we need to listen to what is being spoken from within and not live so much from the outside.Very good Book it has been passed on to others
Five stars are not enough for this book!.......2007-05-15
If you study Lee Coit's books, "Listening, Acceptance, and Being" with all your heart, they will guide you through every event that comes into your life whether it's tragic or just a matter of locating your lost car keys.
I live by these books and "A Course in Miracles" and I, and my loved ones are always taken care of just fine.
Actually Relying on Your Inner Guidance System.......2002-10-04
This book, and sequels "Accepting" and "Being", as well as corresponding audio tapes by Lee Coit have been the main keys to unlocking the secrets of using my own Inner Guidance system. I have been on a path of self-discovery for over thirty years and have developed a true connection with my inner wisdom to a point of total trust and confidence in the guidance I am given. What Coit does is explain how to do this in a simple and easily useable manner. Applying his material I went from using my inner guidance as a curiosity, to knowing that I could totally rely on it. Sometimes this is in feelings that something I am just starting to do doesn't feel right, or it feels oh so good. Sometimes the answers come as I ask questions in journaling and the answers flow as I write. And other times I'll ask a question in my head and I know what I am hearing is my inner guide talking to me. And absolutely every time the feelings I get are absolutely right on. If I decide to not heed the advice, every time I wish that I had listened. And that is exactly the first key- being open to LISTENING.
Lee Coit decided to take a year to prove to himself that either the universe was running by chaos and total random chance or that indeed there was a pattern, a wise intelligence, God, Spirit, Universal Knowledge, what ever your own personal word for it is, that we could tap
into for guidance. If he was leaning one way or another, it was that the Universe was run by chaos; but being an analytical thinker he wanted his own proof. His explorations during that year resulted in this book "Listening" and his conclusion that beyond a doubt that there is
a "Source of Truth" and that it is easily accessible by all of us. This is also my own personal experience.
A guide to helping you find your inner self through silence.......1999-08-02
It is an excellent book that takes you through finding your inner guide and leading you to your true self. It gives wonderful suggestions on how to increase your awareness of self if you are truely ready to listen.

A good study guide.......2000-12-17
If you are taking a music history course that uses A History of Western Music (Grout) then this would be a helpful study guide. It has a brief overview of the main points of each chapter. There are then many questions to answer about that chapter. It also uses the Norton recordings and Anthology of Western Music. If you did all the work in this book you would definitely do well in your course. The chapter overviews do NOT contain enough information to avoid reading the Grout text in case you wanted to be lazy.
I would highly recommend this for undergraduate or graduate music students taking a general music history course.

Book is for band directors but ensemble members will gain insight........2007-01-13
Another book with a great concept: include a DVD which shows what's inside the book. Here Dr. Willie Hill is shown in a clinic type format demonstrating to high school jazz band participants how to play jazz standards. The DVD is a documentary format of a live classroom setting of real students being taught how to solo. Dr. Hill also instructs the 4-piece rhythm section, telling the musicians to listen to the drummer's accents. Both a high school ensemble and a college ensemble are represented. This book also ties in with a great video set that shows the role of the drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards in the rhythm section called "Drums In the Rhythm Section" (also Piano, Bass, Guitar) with top caliber players like Steve Houghton.
The book does a good job of presenting jazz in a methodical way. It starts with jazz history and influential players. It then moves on to the development of jazz instrumentation and jazz styles. As to not overwhelm the novice, a blues tunes, "Billie's Bounce", is used as a starting point. Helpful pointers like scales, modes, and arpeggios are explained and written out. Since classical musicians will only be familiar with standard grand staff notation and unfamiliar with simplified jazz charts, time is taken to explain the anatomy of a chart. The book's expensive but one you'll keep in the library for reference, especially if you plan on being a jazz band director. Also, as a supplemental addition, get "Approaching The Standards" by the same author to practice what you've learned here.
Outstanding Resource.......2006-03-19
Jazz Pedagogy: The Jazz Educator's Handbook and Resource Guide
by J. Richard Dunscomb is an outstanding resource for new music teachers and experienced professionals as well. It contains detailed well thought out articles by leading jazz educators in their fields of expertise...clearly outlined and easily understood examples descriptions. A must have guide for learning or for remebering things you already knew but needed a fresh perspective.

The Best book!!.......2007-10-01
Love the book, first borrowed it from my local library. The binding does tend to crack with much use, so I broke my book's binding and put all the pages in clear cover sheets in a 3 ring binder. Cost a little more but it was worth it because now I don't have to worry about destroying it and my book will last a lot longer. I found this book the most helpful in explaining how to do the signs as well as illustrating them in very clear photos. I highly recommend!!!
An amazing book!.......2007-09-30
Before buying this, I ran into the author at the MET Museum in NYC on an interpreted tour one Friday night. He was very personable and I decided to purchase it. I am glad I did. Very well researched with tidbits on deaf history/culture/etiquette, along with actual pictures of signs (rather than hard-to-see drawings) that show good facial expressions. Overall, a real pleasure and find!
Best Book To Sign.......2007-06-14
This is the best book I have found to learn to sign.
I kept the copy from the library checked out for so long, and kept going overdue, and was wearing it out, I figured I'd best go ahead and purchase my own copy.
I tried other books, but they were useless to me.
I purchased a dvd set from amazon, but the dvd set was horrible - and if your looking for sign dvd's, you'll see which one (set) I warn you about.
A couple copies of this book (you'll will wear this hvy duty book out - from much use) or a hard bound edition will get you communicating w/ your deaf friend quickly - but you have to study.
Money well spent.
sign for dummies.......2007-06-08
Very helpful in learning the sign language. The use of photo and memory hint is excellent. We have tried other material and find this one easier and more conducive to memory retention.
Best sign language book.......2007-01-15
This is the best sign language book that is in print at the moment. It is very easy to use and my Instructor loves it as well!

Book Description
This successful text shows students how to use study strategies by integrating their reading, writing, and listening skills. Through a balance of discussion and carefully sequenced exercises, Sotiriou coves basic college survival skills and progresses to specific strategies for studying, reading, note taking, and exam taking. Integrating College Study Skills is more sophisticated than many books on the market because it doesn't look or read like a workbook. It delves deeper into the understanding and application of basic learning strategies, more so than other study skills books, by guiding the student to use reasoning when studying.

a useful strategy guide for college students!.......2002-04-04
I often like to adopt a syntopic reading approach to books in the same genre...partly because it is great fun and partly, I can get more leverage, in terms of learning points, out of the books in the ultimate reading process. I also get to understand and appreciate how two or more independent authors tackle a common issue with, sometimes, different and diverse viewpoints. (For an understanding of the syntopic reading process, get hold of Mortimer Adler's How to Read a Book.)
In this particularly instance, I read Peter Sotiriou's Integrating College Study Skills syntopically with Jean Reynolds' 'Succeeding in College' book.
On the whole, I found that they can complement each other pretty well, although there are similarities in content as well as contrasts in approach. Both authors demand the reader to take a pro-active approach in the reading process.
Peter Sotiriou's book is more specific to the reasoning process embodied in reading, listening & writing. The many exercises in this respect are deliberately constructed in a cumulative, step-by-step fashion. This makes the book very helpful for the college student reader to follow. The author takes great pain to explain and illustrate the process of summarising and paraphrasing upon reading, which are two vital information gathering skills for college students.
Jean Reynolds' book is more comprehensive in the coverage of the overall 'study strategies' process. It is also more broad-based, as the author very skilfully uses many success stories of athletes, performers, professional men and women, and leaders in diverse fields to illustrate her points.
I particularly enjoy the author's creative treatment of critical thinking with the aid of the pencil. She recognises the pencil as an inexpensive thinking tool. A very interesting concept...practical, too.
In terms of introducing reading techniques, both authors did their job pretty well. Both provided ample exercises.
To sum up, both books can serve as useful strategy guides for college students. Both are designed to to help you enjoy and benefit from your college experiences.
