Product Description
In this edited volume, leading edge researchers discuss the link between Emotional Intelligence (EI) and workplace performance. Contributors from many areas such as social science, management (including organizational practitioners), and psychologists have come together to develop a better understanding of how EI can influence work performance, and whether research supports it. A unique feature of this book is that it integrates the work of social scientists and organizational practitioners. Their mutual interests in EI provide a unique opportunity for basic and applied research and practices to learn from one another in order to continually refine and advance knowledge on EI. The primary audience for this book is researchers, teachers, and students of psychology, management, and organizational behavior. Due to its clear practical applications to the workplace, it will also be of interest to organizational consultants and human resource practitioners.

LEADING-EDGE RESEARCH AND MULTIPLE VIEWS OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE........2005-09-06
The book's primary purposes are
1. to share leading edge research on the link between emotional intelligence (EI) and workplace performance and
2. to examine EI from a variety of vantage points, each with somewhat different ideas about EI.
The key question the book addresses is: Does EI influence work performance? The book's contributions do not allow the reader to come to a simple answer to this key question, but are extremely insightful and enlightening and, I believe, strongly suggest EI is a valid concept and has a crucial link to performance.
The contributions are all first-rate. As research-based chapters, the efforts of the contributors will appeal to academicians, but will also be appreciated by human resource professionals and line executives who want to probe into this critical topic more deeply than the plethora of books on EI spewing forth from a booming EI cottage industry. The book will be especially appealing to all who are interested in organizational psychology and behavior. Very highly recommended.

Packed with practical exercises.......1999-10-28
In these times of constant change, emotions can no longer be politely stifled. They are constantly at the surface; but, the good news is that they can be harvested into a positive force for building a more vigorous organization and enhancing one's own job satisfaction. This book is packed with examples, practical exercises, and tools for training that will help improve individual and team performance; reduce interpersonal conflict and barriers to cooperation; integrate feelings and facts when making business decisions; develop managerial skills of facilitation, communication, and leadership; motivate employees to take more responsibility. Each chapter provides questions to ask and specific actions to take to help one's colleagues banish forever such common barriers to participation as hierarchy issues, career problems, lack of cooperation, destructive management styles, and jaded skepticism.
She takes the issue of "emotion" out of the closet and names erroneous assumptions we tend to have about them. The point is made that there are no secrets: emotional needs always express themselves one way or another. This is her first principle of emotion. There are seven others: 2) Anger is an expression of need; 3) Our feelings and needs are not wrong or bad; 4) Emotions are the gateway to vitality and feeling alive; 5) We can address emotional issues and still save face; 6) Immediate reactions to problems often disguise deeper feelings; 7) We must clarify individual needs before problem solving with others; 8) We need to express positive feelings and communicate negative ones. These are thoroughly discussed.
Other chapters address issues of fear, hidden agendas, "hot buttons" creating conflict, corporate craziness (Ed. Note: On the this editor's favorite chapters), changing relationships between managers and employees, aligning organizational needs and individual talents, gaining commitment to change, and revitalizing the manager's role (Ed. Note: An excellent chapter for outlining a manager's new job in an environment committed to quality).
This book is written for managers at all levels as well as senior corporate executives and their staffs. It can't help but to enhance communication and teamwork and help overcome obstacles of poor communication and fear.
Comment: Organizational politics and human emotions are a virtually unknown and volatile territory in the recent and not so recent history of the American workforce, especially the issue of physician behavior in a healthcare environment. This is an outstanding, readable, "nuts and bolts" book with outstanding exercises for dealing with real issues right now. It is a welcome and much-needed volume that supplies a wonderful compass for addressing natural human emotional and resistance issues in an organization's quality transformation.

Customer Reviews:
A superb guide to managing social anxiety and tension.......2007-09-03
Janet Esposito's book "In the Spotlight" is a thoughtfully written, well-researched guide to managing anxiety related to social situations. Although the book focuses on public speaking and performing, its exercises and lessons can be applied to any situation in which a person has experienced nervousness and anxiety in making a public appearance--from going to a party, to attending a concert, to teaching. I have read many books on managing anxiety related to social situations, and this is the best that I have come across.
"In the Spotlight" is a step ahead of similar literature on managing anxiety for several reasons. One is the fresh, honest, compassionate voice of the author. Janet Esposito genuinely empathizes with her readers because, as she writes about in her book, she herself struggled with anxiety related to public speaking, attempting to avoid situations where she had to lead a meeting or present at a conference before realizing that she needed to get the better of this demon of anxiety. Esposito's compassionate presence as an author makes you *know* that she takes performance/social anxiety seriously, and wants to share with you the methods that helped her to feel more comfortable with--and actually enjoy--the process of speaking in front of people.
In addition to being positive and understanding, Esposito has very high standards for her reader, urging us to "play full out" in our engagement with the exercises and lessons that she asks us to do, from writing down our goals for ourselves as public speakers, to practicing our speaking in front of a small group of family and friends.
Moreover, Janet Esposito has a scientist's understanding of what actually *causes* the tension that public appearances provoke in many of us. She sees anxiety, correctly, as a learned physiological response, not something mysterious and "in our heads." She points out that many folks with social anxiety have actually "trained" their bodies to respond with fear to certain situations, such as public speaking and performing. We have learned to respond to public performance just as we would respond to actual physically life-threatening situations. Esposito's point is that because we have trained ourselves to respond with physical fear in situations that are not actually physically threatening, like public speaking, we can also train ourselves *not* to respond in these ways in public situations, to recognize that they are not filled with danger, but that, in fact, they are just occasions where people want to learn something from us, and we are there to enrich their lives by sharing our knowledge, and our presence, with them.
This book has helped me tremendously in my own life, where I apply its lessons especially to my work as a teacher--one of the more anxiety-producing "performance" professions out there! I continue to use the book's ideas and exercises daily, which I combine with one or two of the exercises on the CD that one can purchase separately from the book.
A Truly Incredible Book.......2007-08-31
It is not an exaggeration to say that this book changed my life. I had suffered from a horrible fear of public speaking since childhood, but once I began reading this book I knew I had found the answer. The book covers so much more than just public speaking. Janet Esposito takes a holistic approach to overcoming fear and provides many practical suggestions for creating a resourceful mind and body. There is no quick fix or magic formula to make the fear disappear, but by following Janet's advise the fear of public speaking becomes manageable. This is not a how-to book for improving technique but a tool for facing the fear and becoming more comfortable in front of an audience. Before I read the book I could not have imagined that I would be speaking to large groups on a regular basis, but after implementing Janet's suggestions and taking small leaps of faith, my horrible fear has been reduced to mild discomfort. Janet truly understands those who are facing this challenge, and through her compassionate writing she guides the reader on their own path to overcoming their fear.
This book was my saving grace.......2007-08-29
Before I found Ms. Esposito's book "In the SpotLight," I purchased a few "other" public speaking guideline books prior to preparing for my first formal presentation. After quickly skimming these "other" guideline books, I became even more fearful and anxious about my presentation. I found the content too technical and not relevant whatsoever to what I was experiencing, which was sheer panic by this time. So much so, that I considered canceling my presentation and disappointing my boss.
Janet's book has changed my life in every sense of the word. I realize now that I have suffered from performance anxiety since I was a child and lost my authentic voice along the way. Through a personal consultation with Janet and reading her book several times, I was able to courageously face my fears. Although understanding and exposing the potential source of your public speaking fears can be painful, Janet is with you every step of the way. Through her first-hand experience and extensive knowledge, Janet's book gently and correctly guides you with ease and lifts your spirits throughout. I am so impressed with Janet's compassion. The book is so well written and relevant to so many areas in your life; it's indeed an extraordinary gift. You're actually motivated to make the necessary changes and compelled to continue with the actions steps at the end of each chapter.
Although a slow process, I am well on my way to finding my true authentic voice. Janet's book is the ticket.
In The SpotLight, Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking and Performing.......2007-08-29
I will keep this review short. I am a long fan of Ms. Esposito, having read her book, listened to her cd, and received her e-newsletter. She knows what she is talking about, having suffered from anxiety and stage fright her entire life. This is a fear she has worked through, although she acknowledges it is a life long battle. She shares these self taught insights with the reader in a simple concise manner and makes us realize that almost everyone has a fear of public speaking that can be overcome with practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read other books on the same subject that have failed them. This is not an academic text. Instead it is a heart-felt easy to read and use guide to overcoming our own fears of public speaking. She also does a good job of convincing the reader that he/she is not alone in the battle.
A life saving book.......2005-07-20
Anyone with the slighest fear of public speaking or performing needs to read this book. It gives you direction and activities that make you re-think why you have such fears. It helped me very much to overcome a problem I have had since childhood.

Description:
Objectives: To estimate the between- and within-individual consistency of the individual zones of optimal functioning (IZOF)-based emotion profiles describing successful and unsuccessful (sub-standard) performance situations. Method: The methodology of generalizability theory (GT) was applied to two multifaceted measurement designs in studies of 12 highly skilled ice-hockey players assessed by the 28-item aggregated sport-specific emotion scale (Study 1) and a single-case involving elite soccer player (Study 2) using self-generated individualized emotion scale, respectively. Results: A unique and specific interaction of emotions (the IZOF-''iceberg'' or bell-shaped profile) characterized successful performance situations in both Study 1 and 2. This pattern with predominance of optimal pleasant and unpleasant emotions was consistently revealed in between- and within-individual comparisons. In contrast, failure (or sub-standard performance) could not be characterized in terms of one unique and specific profile. However, the findings clearly motivate future research to identify multiple emotion profiles to conceptualize sub-standard performance. The paper offers hypotheses to guide future research. Conclusions: Findings provided support for conceptualizing performance situations in terms of relatively stable optimal and dysfunctional patterns of interaction of pleasant and unpleasant emotions. Results also demonstrate that GT is a methodology that can accommodate idiographic as well as nomothetic approaches to estimating within-individual and between-individual consistency patterns of performance-related emotions.

Book Description
In this special issue, five papers address the study of emotions from a variety of viewpoints. Two are theoretical essays that deal respectively with emotion and creativity and the relationships between individual and team performance. Three are empirical studies that canvas the emotion-performance nexus across levels of analysis: within-person, between-person, and in groups. Between them, the five papers present a strong case for the nexus of emotions and performance, but more importantly provide a platform for potentially fruitful future research in this burgeoning area.
