1 out of 5 stars College textbook price-gouging going on here........2005-12-04

$67 for a paperback book is highway roberry.

Have been pricing out college textbooks on Ebay, Amazon, and the college bookstore. It's a bloody medieval guild these publishers have going here and professors who insist on the latest editions of texts are aiding and abetting the rip-off.

This is monopolisitic practice if I've ever seen it. If the industry doesn't rachet down this greed-fest, someone else will - and as far as I'm concerned, it can't happen too quickly. Shame on you all.

5 out of 5 stars Here is what counts.......2000-08-24

I am an affectionate critic of "Legacies," as both editors were teachers of mine and many of the contributors were co-teachers with me in the mid-1990s. Regardless, I used the book for several years and the results speak volumes.

This is a college literature/composition reader that tries to do it all -- and succeeds. For its hefty heft, one must acknowledge that each lesson plan (day-to-day lesson plans handed happily to you by real teachers, talented teachers) belongs here. I used many of them before they were "lesson plans" -- they engage and involve students.

Whether you are a reader/student simply looking for a great resource of singular texts or a college literature professor/adjunct composition instructor searching for sure-fire ways of directing your students away from the window and towards what counts -- "Legacies" is the book.

5 out of 5 stars An obedience instructor's bible!.......2000-07-16

I have been teaching obedience for many years. This book really opens up a whole new world for you. The book is very detailed, descriptive, and written for everyone. A real must have in every dog owners home!

5 out of 5 stars The best handbook ever for trainers!.......1998-03-19

Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.

4 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2007-08-03

I used this textbook in my general psychology class in college.
All in all I would say it was a good book. It explores many important aspects of psychology.
It's a very good textbook when taking that subject in school.
(Like any textbook) At times the material can seem a bit dry, but overall it's a very useful text if you are interested in studying the field of psychology.

Book Description

Gathering concepts and techniques borrowed from outstanding college professors, The Joy of Teaching provides helpful guidance for new instructors developing and teaching their first college courses.

Award-winning professor Peter Filene proposes that teaching should not be like a baseball game in which the instructor pitches ideas to students to see whether they hit or strike out. Ideally, he says, teaching should resemble a game of Frisbee in which the teacher invites students to catch ideas and pass them on.

Rather than prescribe a single model for success, Filene examines the advantages and disadvantages of various pedagogical strategies, inviting new teachers to make choices based on their own personalities, values, and goals. Filene tackles everything from syllabus writing and lecture planning to class discussions, grading, and teacher-student interactions outside the classroom. The book's down-to-earth, accessible style makes it appropriate for new teachers in all fields. Instructors in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences will all welcome its invaluable tips for successful teaching and learning.

5 out of 5 stars Another great guide!!.......2006-02-26

I'm and Adult Education graduate student who purchased this book (along with McKeachie's- "Teaching Tips") for our Methods course. Our Prof selected severval books because there isn't one good book on the market yet for Methods that incorporates all that we are learning from these various books on life long learning. It is an excellant guide toting reciprocal learning between student and teacher. It is straight forward and down to earth without all that "academitius" we suffer from with the scientific reads. Been out of college for 3 decades and coming to read read a guide that is right to the point makes it a god send so you can turn around and apply it to your everyday work situations.

5 out of 5 stars Kicking and screaming teachers are in the 21st century.......2005-05-10

Having been a counselor in a Texas community college for the past thirty one years I can readily state that I am thrilled to still be able to gather new ideas from colleagues who are decades my junior.
Mr. Filine in his book assesses the current state of higher education for the masses without "dissing" those who labor in the profession and the same time slyly encourages us to reach out beyond the "way we taught."
Without explicitly stateing so I found between the lines that perhaps teachers are becoming superfluous unless we understand the context of the educational process in respect to technology, popular culture, and learning taking place quite literally at the speed of light. He alludes to this on p.56, "...(teachers) play a complementary part in the symphony of learning." This metaphore flashes to mind the spanish word for teacher, maestro.
Mr. Filene's chapter on mandatory class discussion addresses the universal entity that all students bring to class which is fear. By teachers confronting this head on we take a quantum step in the learning/teaching equation. Empowering the student is directly proportional to empowering the teacher and it is the key to the entire process.
I have a sign on my office door in two inch bold print that states, "UNAUTHORIZED LEARNING NOT ALLOWED." Fortunately in our electronic world it is not possible to adher to this dicate. To wit I stumbled across Mr. Filene's book by going on line, looking at the NY Times home page, clicking on the an educational story, referencing a book mentioned in said article, being exposed to another book on the Amazon site, and then thirty minutes and $50 later having to wait a whole three days for my three ordered books.
The tag line from _Glen Gary Glen Ross_ was "ABC", always be closing. The tag line from _the Joy of Teaching_ in my view is "ABL"...must I say what the L denotes.
Thanks for a great read.

5 out of 5 stars Useful, enjoyable, energizing.......2005-04-20

I read this book as part of an effort to catch my breath during Spring Break in my first semester teaching a large college class. It left me feeling re-energized and excited about the new ideas I learned, and gave me new perspective on the whole undertaking. It is chock full of really useful and thought-provoking insights and suggestions. Reading the book basically got me ready to get back to teaching with renewed enthusiasm and confidence.

I would recommend this enjoyable and extremely useful book to any college teacher looking for new ideas and techniques--even a fresh attitude toward how they approach the classroom and their students.

    Book Description

The proven workshop for teaching non-professional trainers to develop and conduct effective training is back. Train-the-Trainer Workshop, 3rd Edition is thoroughly revised and updated, making it the most complete and valuable book of its kind available today. This powerful workshop will help you bring your managers, team leaders and other non-trainers quickly up-to-speed in the basic skills required to develop and conduct training-confidently, competently and with ease.

Loaded with practical tips, helpful precautions, checklists and tools, the revised edition includes:

A completely new chapter on an essential skill in developing training—outlining the training content for a learning objective.
    30 additional overhead transparency masters
    Updated case studies
Turn your managers into effective trainers—overnight

As important as training is these days, many organizations can't afford the luxury of having experienced trainers on staff. Or, if they do, their trainers can't keep up with the increasing demands as jobs change and re-training becomes necessary.

As a result, those who've never had the opportunity to develop professional training skills are occasionally being required to develop and conduct training sessions.

That's why Train-the-Trainer, 3rd Edition is so valuable. The comprehensive how-to manual walks first-time trainers through every step of the process of developing and delivering effective training—from using adult learning principles all the way through evaluating the results of training.

The workshop also addresses how to handle problem personalities and situations that can unnerve even the most experienced trainer, including participants who won't talk—and those who won't stop. Using a learn-by-doing approach, Train-the-Trainer, 3rd Edition is full of opportunities for every participant to interact, practice delivery skills, try out new skills, build their confidence in a safe environment, and become effective trainers—overnight.

Even veteran trainers will learn something new and hone and update their skills.

    Participants will learn how to:

Identify new ways training can be used in their jobs
Clearly understand how adults learn so they can teach others
Analyze training requirements—the first step in successful training
Develop learning objectives that provide the direction for the rest of their training
Select the most appropriate training methods
Develop and use training aids the right way
    Create lesson plans
    Use basic facilitation skills
    Increase participation
Conduct training using their lesson plans
    Evaluate training
Transfer newly acquired training skills to the work setting

Filled with insights it would take your managers years to gain on their own, Train-the-Trainer, 3rd Edition makes it easy for even beginning trainers to do the job experienced trainers once did: Deliver powerful training that is skill-packed, memorable and achieves lasting and positive behavior change.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST SPANISH TEXTBOOKS (if not the greatest).......2004-08-18

I'm an advanced Spanish instructor and intermediate language coordinator. This is by far the best textbook of Spanish I've ever seen. Yes, you don't find great pictures, appealing format, that's true. However, the grammatical explanations are just incredible. This book is a link between theoretical linguistics and the classroom. The explanations are based on concept-based systemic-functional grammar of Spanish, instead of the rules of thumb that you will find in most commercial textbooks, which have as many exceptions as rules. If you found yourself thinking "... um, but I can also use the imperfect or the subjunctive here, so how do I explain this when the textbook says the opposite?", then this is the textbook for you. You'll find well-grounded, essential, concise, conceptual explanations rather than list of rules that are not true anyways. And you have EVERYTHING in this book, all the grammar you can possibly think of, including meaningful word-order in Spanish, phonetics, questions of discourse, a task-based approach to composition and academic writing, editing and typical error analysis and the metalinguistic knowledge necessary to be literate and articulate in Spanish. Students can realize how changes in form translate into changes in meaning and how meanings are constructed in Spanish (for example, changes of focus or information prominence with rheme and theme structures). There are lots of exercises based on these explanations. Explanations are in Spanish and most examples are translated into English. This is ideal for an intermediate and advanced level. If you want to read more on this line, get also Spanish/ English Contrasts by Stanley too, and read Dwight Bolinger's articles.

    Book Description

For years the Health Fitness Instructor's Handbook has been the standard by which texts on fitness testing and prescription have been judged. Now with the introduction of this updated and expanded third edition, the book sets an even higher level of excellence.

Health Fitness Instructor's Handbook is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book available for health and fitness professionals who want to learn about the latest advances in physical fitness. That's why more than 150 colleges and universities have adopted the book for course use and why it has been used as a text in ACSM

    Health/Fitness Instructor workshops since 1986.

This new edition has been updated according to 1995 ACSM objectives for Health/Fitness Instructor and Exercise Leader certifications and the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health. Plus, the text provides the latest information on the fundamentals of fitness, exercise physiology, and biomechanics, as well as guidelines for developing safe fitness programs.

Respected exercise scientists Howley and Franks have included the following features in this improved third edition:

    • New organization, with a heavier focus on exercise prescription

    • New chapters on metabolic costs of physical activity, weight management, and exercise prescription for special populations

    • List of objectives to open each chapter

    • In-text reviews linked to learning objectives

    • Case studies for every chapter

    • Suggested readings

Part I of Health Fitness Instructor's Handbook describes the areas of knowledge and competence needed by a health fitness instructor, the relationship of physical activity to optimal health, and how to evaluate the health status of fitness participants.

Part II provides the scientific foundations for understanding the structure and function of the human body, the measurement and evaluation of fitness, and the determination of energy expenditure.

Part III discusses the basic elements of nutrition, methods of body composition assessment, and the importance of a healthy body weight, including ways to achieve it.

Part IV describes the components of physical fitness and assessment techniques for cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility and low-back function.

Part V presents guidelines and recommendations for exercise programming for each of the fitness components. The section also explains the importance of exercise leadership, including examples for a variety of fitness activities, and provides recommended exercise modifications for special populations.

Finally, Part VI covers a range of considerations for safe and effective exercise programming. The section describes the relationship between personality and fitness behavior, provides the framework for helping individuals adopt and maintain healthy behaviors, explains ways to prevent and treat injuries, reviews basic information about the electrocardiogram and common medications as they relate to exercise, and describes program administration.

    Instructor Guide Software

The Instructor Guide Software for Health Fitness Instructor's Handbook (Third Edition) contains sample lecture outlines, along with student learning activities, for each of the 20 topics typically covered in university health fitness instructor courses. Included is a list of different technologies teachers can use to prepare for the classroom.

        Product Description

Here's a wealth of ideas, exercises and plans for group or individual lessons, for all abilities, all levels and all ages. Each lesson plan follows a natural progression, gradually building up the difficulty of the exercises as the ability of the pupil increases. The themes include such topics as first lessons, lead-line lessons, circles, school figures, work without stirrups and/or reins, transitions, lateral work, using poles, canter work, dressage tests, drill rides, and games. Throughout, there are tips on how to deliver the lessons, what to look for in rider faults, and how to help riders improve and make real progress. Clear diagrams throughout.
