Entertaining AND Instructive.......2007-09-26
One of my hobbies is seeking out and reading excellent books. Not merely good books, but A+ ones. Life is too short for anything less. Bill Boggs' Got What It Takes?: Successful People Reveal How They Made It to the Top makes it onto my list of such best books. It's easy and fun to read, and you end up learning many wonderful life lessons and acquiring priceless nuggets of wisdom from people who've reached the top of the ladder in their professions. These are hard-won insights we're talking about, easily yours for the taking. What I also like about this book is that the author includes himself as one of the subjects, satisfying your natural curiosity to know more about the person taking you on this literary journey.
One of the side benefits is you become acquainted on an intimate, human level with celebrity types normally out of reach. You share in their private thoughts and learn of their ups and downs -- that, in fact, they're on the same journey as everyone else. I was especially impressed by the detailed "roadmap" to success spelled out in the book, as delineated by the chapter headings. If you've never had a wise parent or relative, or mentor, help you in your life, this book is the next best thing. And it's a work you can return to again and again. I recommend it.
perfect graduation present.......2007-05-31
I bought this as a graduation present for some cousins of mine and they LOVED it-- it's really perfect for a high school or college grad, because there's so many different types of careers represented, and so many people that everyone's heard of, everyone can learn from. One cousin has no idea what she wants to major in-- I didn't want to buy her anything in any one field, but give her something that would stay useful to her in years to come.
A Must-Read!.......2007-05-30
This book came as a total surprise. I thought it's only for young upwardly mobile go-getters and not for us "boomers" on the verge of retirement but I was wrong. This is a book for everyone. Inspirational and funny, well organized and insightful. Mr. Boggs gets inside the personalities of the people he interviews and translates their formulas for success into entertaining and life-changing chapters. This is a wonderful book for everyone - whether you want to have a successful career, successful marriage or even just a succesful day. And if you're looking for a great graduation gift to inspire someone just starting out -this it it.
GREAT READ!.......2007-05-10
NOTE: THIS REVIEW CAME TO ME VIA GOOD NEWS BROADCAST
"Got What if Takes? Is a great read! It was packed full of personal beliefs that will make any working or living person evaluate their own lives. I love the way he wove the luminaries into an exciting story about how a person succeeds under all odds. The writing style was fast paced and the selection of people was fascinating. This is truly a Good News Book. Paul Sladkus, Founder of Good News Broadcast
Must Read ---Really.......2007-05-08
Boggs has put together a treasure trove of tips for upping the quality of your play in work and life. It is imposible to take this book to heart and not benefit in extraordinary ways. I'm twisting the arms of all my terrific students (at one of the best communication schools in the world) to read and use this book. They'll thank me after sensation returns to their extremities.

Interview Intelligence.......2007-08-10
I bought "Teacher Interviews" and "How to Get the Teaching Job You Want" at the same time. I found them both to be helpful in different ways. I really liked the sample cover letters in Teacher Interviews. I think their big recommendation regarding how to address how your credentials match the needs of the school or the district is a key to getting interviews. I used this letter organization strategy and got an interview at the first district I used it with. I'm now in the third round of interviews for that district. There were also lots of examples of interview questions in the back of the book. They are organized by general specialty area, which is helpful. I also like that this book encourages applicants to be true to their own beliefs or teaching philosophies and gives guidelines of what you must include in your answer. Those recommendations are about how to analyze the question and answer it not telling you what to believe. To put their interview strategies into practice, I have gone on some open interviews. They have four main categories of how to answer questions (that's about the background authority for your answer) and I thought that was a good recommendation. I think that this book combined with "How to get the Teaching Job You Want" are kind of a one-two punch for an excellent chance of getting a teaching job.
Helped me get a job.......2007-08-09
I recommend this book to all my teacher-friends who are looking for a job. It's awesome; it's separated into categories for easy skimming and includes questions with specific answers.
I got the appt for my very 1st interview on a Thursday, got the book that day, and was prepared for the actual interview the Tuesday of the next week.
I ended up getting the job and after the interview was over, the principal actually asked me, "How did you know all those things? You interview very well."
GET THE BOOK!! :)
Some of the categories included are:
1) General interview questions
2) Elementary interview questions
3) Middle school
4) High School
5) Science interview questions
6) Special Ed questions
7) Math
etc etc.
A huge help for a new teacher.......2007-04-04
As a brand new teacher preparing for the big job search, this book is a wealth of information. It is written in very clear, easy to read sections geared towards teachers of elementary, middle and high schools. The author provides many common questions that might come up on an interview and also gives an outline of how the questions should be answered and the extra research you should do to add quality to each answer. I know first hand that the preparation for a teaching interview is very overwhelming -- this book helps you to organize your plan of attack and really helps to minimize the element of surprise when faced with a room full of administrators throwing questions at you. I highly recommend it!
good for teachers in the northeast.......2007-02-18
I bought this book hoping that it would help me prepare for teaching interviews in a mid-size southern city school system. I found the advice mostly inappropriate for my teaching situation, particularly in terms of dress, formality, and even the path of the application process.
I moved down here from the New York metro area, where the author is based and has experience. I think his advice is absolutely spot-on for that market.
BUT--not all areas of the country are the same! Take Dr. Pollack's recommendations with a grain of salt if you are not job-searching in the northeast.
Good luck in your search!
Excellent book!.......2006-05-16
I read this entire book and, sure enough, I have gotten called for teacher interviews left and right. I felt extremely prepared for my interviews and I really do not feel that I would have if I hadn't read Dr. Pollock's amazing book. Dr. Pollock was my professor and he is truly a brilliant man and really provides excellent advice in this book for the hopeful teacher trying to get a job for the first time. Commonly, after graduating college, most students are unsure of what to expect. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to have Dr. Pollock as my professor at Georgian Court University in Lakewood, NJ, where he familiarized all of us with his book and really prepared us for the interview and how to get hired. You can receive the same advice from him as well, if you purchase his book! I am living proof of a record of positive results that have come about from following the steps recommended by Dr. Pollock in this book. It is well worth it and I highly recommend it to anyone new in the education field! :)

Customer Reviews:
Not as good as the reviewers have indicated.......2007-10-06
I purchased this book about a year ago and put it to use in the last 2 weeks with 7 interviews. The feedback I gained from the reviewers was much better than most of the information I gleaned from the book.
It is important that no one, while searching for a job, use the answers in the book. Apparently they are wrote and are fully expected by the interviewers. The real thing to learn from the book is to begin with an example but always lead into how you learned from whatever the incident was and bring that to what you have accomplished with what you learned.
Overall I am not unhappy I bought the book, but it will not be a book I keep as a reference.
The best book for your interview.......2007-07-17
I found this book to be an excellent reading to prepare for an interview. All the chapters are important and to the point. I prepared for two interviews with this book and the interviewers were impressed with me. The recommendation of knowing as much as you can about the industry, company and job is priceless. I went as far as to prepare a marketing report on one interview. Good book, buy it, it is definetely worth the money.
Very useful, one for the permanent bookshelf.......2007-06-04
Used this extensively when preparing for interviews during first year of MBA-landed multiple offers, not just because of this book but it surely helped. I have found it useful even for changing jobs (not just useful for recent graduates as one reviewer said). Came back to Amazon to purchase yet another copy as I have given away two previous copies I owned. Best best, flip through it in a store like Barnes and Noble and if you like it, come buy online...
One of the best practical guides ever.......2007-05-27
I digested the book, and did everything Dr. Leanne recommended. I tested it by researching an industry I had no experience with, and landed an interview even though no jobs were on offer. I had spent about 6 weeks reading everything I could and prepared all the interview questions in the second section of the book. It turned out that I was more knowledgeable about the company than the manager who interviewed me, so it turned out to be a very strange experience. First, he resented that a senior manager sent him to interview me. He then yelled at me several times, and accused me of lying about white papers that the company had released.
After that exciting interview, I am convinced that this is one of the best practical books I've ever read. Where else can you find a book that tells you exactly how to upstage a senior manager with 13 years of industry experience?
Great book.......2006-08-20
After reading this book I actually got a job after over a year. It helped me a lot with my interview technique which pretty much did not exist. The book is arranged in such a way that if certain questions don't relate to your profession you can just skip through it. The questions are clear (and many familiar) and the responses sound like real people talking and can be easily modified to suit your profession. Anyone who hs been without a job for a long time or short will find this book quite helpful.

Costly mistake!.......2002-06-30
In December 2001 I recruited a person to our business and because I hired on my gutfeeling I made a very expensive mistake. Now seven months later after enormous amounts of energy and resources devoted to that person I had to fire him.
This book has thought me the importance of looking at working habits and past actions when hiring people. Maybe you can teach a old dog to sit - but who has the time and money for that!
If you are hiring - buy this book and do it right!
The Hiring Process - Will make or break your business.......2002-06-02
"High Impact Hiring" by Del Still is a must read for everyone from the President of a Company to the Dept. Manager charged with interviewing & hiring decisions. Once you have read this book you will find you are more equiped to gather the pertinent information on candidates which will ultimately give you greater success in this most important decision. Hiring the right individual is one of our Corporate clients greatest challenges so we have been giving this book to them to assist in facing the hiring hurdle. With the assistance of the book they are capable of meeting the hiring challenge with confidence. As the President of one of Southern California's premier CPA firms I am involved in all of our own internal hirings and am so grateful to have read this book. My advise to those of you who are involved in this process is "Don't hire without first reading this exceptional book!" Your business cannot afford the wrong individual. Creating an exceptional company can only be acheived with exceptional people within an organization.
"You win by building an exceptional work force".......2001-04-25
"Making the right hiring decision is more important today than ever before." Del J. Still writes, "I don't have to tell you about the impact of smarter competition and globalization of today's business on profits. I'm sure you've felt the pressure. If not, you will. Even the smallest company cannot afford to operate as they have in the past and expect to suceed in today's pressure-filled environment. How do you win? You win by building an exceptional work force"(p.19).
In this context, throughout the book, he presents his 7-Step interview model that can be summarized by one seven-letter word- 'PROCEED.' He argues that "It is an acronym where each letter represents one step of the process. 'PROCEED' is your blueprint to interviewing success. You'll be amazed at the results you achieve when you follow this process, step-by-step"(p.42).
Step 1: Prepare
* Identify existing superior performers
* Create a job description for the position
* Identify the competencies or skills needed to do the job
* Draft interview questions
Step 2: Review
* Review questions for legality and fairness
Step 3: Organize
* Select your interview team and your method of interviewing
* Assign roles to your team and divide the questions
Step 4: Conduct
* Gather data from the job candidate
Step 5: Evaluate
* Determine the match between the candidate and the job
Step 6: Exchange
* Share data in a discussion meeting
Step 7: Decide
* Make the final decision
Finally, he writes that "Even though the material I have included in this book is based on years of research and practical experience, it can always be improved. I encourage you to experiment with the methods and discover what works best for you...The cardinal rule is to 'stay legal' and 'play fair.' The 'best' thing you can do is put someone in a job where their competencies closely match the requirements. The 'worst' thing you can do is the opposite"(p.221).
Highly recommended.
The Ultimate Interviewer's Handbook.......2001-04-01
With all the books on hiring out there, I didn't expect to find one that showed me a system that worked flawlessly. This is a must have book if you are at all involved in the hiring process. It's worth its weight in gold! Buy it before it sells out. Enough said.
Proceduralizes Interview Techniques.......2000-06-27
Over the dozen years that I've been interviewing and hiring staff, I have "self-developed" many of the techniques the author presents. However, I had not formalized them. This book provides methods and procedures, helps develop a mechanical thought process, to structure the pre-interview selection, the interview, and the post-interview analysis.
I used the book to augment my own "self-grown" interview process recently and with tremendous success.
This book is a "must have" arrow in every manager's quiver; young or old, new or mature. Whether you have "home-grown" an interview technique, had HR force one upon you, or are looking to develop a strategy, this book will help.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Review of Prepare for an Interview and Obtain a Job as a Law Enforcement Officer.......2007-04-01
When the book arrived, what a shock!! It was this photocopied, spiral bound book that appeared a gradeschooler put together at Kinkos. The copy was poor, appeared the photo copier itself was running low on ink. I was expecting something of better quality and durability. Further, the level in which it is written is very remedial and replete with grammatical, syntax and spelling errors. If I had paid $5 for this book it probably would have been worth it, but at $25, the photocopiers of this book are making a steal.
A Very Helpful and Concise Preparation Guide.......2007-02-18
I believe that this book is a must have for any individual that is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. It contains several helpful sections on how to dress during the interview, what to say, and gives a list of several questions and answers that you may be asked during the interview.
Best way to prepare for the interview!!!.......2007-01-05
This is the best and most detailed book out there about the interview process. It is very detailed and complete. Every question that I was asked in two different interviews was in this book. I ranked #1 in one of my interviews and have not received the results for my other interview. I give all the credit to this book. Had I not purchased it I would have been ill-prepared. Highly recommend if you want to pass the intimidating interview process and get into background.
Helpful book, but note that it is only 54 pages .......2006-02-23
This book has a narrow focus that addresses one of the most challenging parts of the application process.
It has the information you need, but it is only 54 pages which makes it expensive when you add shipping as well.
For me this book was worth the cost as I'm trying to give myself every advantage possible, but if you're on a budget, you might want to consider getting a more general book first and then buying this only if you are still concerned about how your oral interview might go.
Excellent Book!!.......2005-09-24
I purchased this book for my boyfriend who had recently graduated from the Police Academy. This book helped him prepare for the application process as well as interviews. A lot of specific, detailed info was given. It even gave him suggestions on how to dress for the interview.
Excellent book for anyone aspiring to be in Law Enforcement!!

Book Description
Have you ever been lied to? Of course you have, whether you knew it or not.
Ever caught a spouse, business partner, parent, boss, or child brazenly lying right to your face? What if you could tell someone was lying, just by listening to them, and observing their action and behavior? How to Spot a Liar is the first book that gives you the tools to figure out what's really going on: to gain the upper hand in salary negotiation, move a prospective client toward the outcome you desire, and find out why you need to end a business or personal relationship.
Author Greg Hartley is a decorated military interrogator who has used the techniques in How to Spot a Liar for 16 years to get the truth from enemy combatants. He has successfully applied them to project management and in contract negotiations, to resolve conflict and prevail. Now he shares this scientific process with you so you can use it every day.
Who needs How to Spot a Liar? Anyone with a cheating spouse or manipulative boss. Anyone conducting job interviews or cold-calling prospective customers. Lawyers who need to "read" witnesses or jurors. Anyone trying to survive the dating scene or faced with a string of business meetings with clients. Anyone who has teenagers at home or works on Capitol Hill. Anyone whose success and happiness depends on clear interaction with others.
And anyone who wants to become just a bit more inscrutable, in business, life
even at the poker table!
Gregory Hartley's expertise as an interrogator first earned him honors with the United States Army. More recently, it has drawn organizations such as the Defense Intelligence Agency, Navy SEALS, Federal law enforcement agencies, and national TV to seek his insights about "how to" as well as "why." He resides near Atlanta, Georgia.
Maryann Karinch is the author of eight books, including Rangers Lead the Way: The Army Rangers' Guide to Leading Your Organization Through Chaos (with Dean Hohl) and founder of The Rudy Agency, a literary agency based in Estes Park, Colorado.

good book but .............2007-10-19
i think it is good book to start and to where to look but he was fast in explaining some ideas and instead he refered you to other books to read if you want to have some more. moreover he did not tell you how to make use of them instead he made to you to discover it.
Insightful and useful information.......2007-09-13
This book is full of insightful and useful information that even the everyday person can incorporate into their lives. It taught me what to look for when speaking to a person and has already been helpful with my business colleagues. Thanks for the info!
Jumpy but good information.......2007-06-01
The information in this book is very interesting, but its hard to apply it to your own life, even in the sections committed to every day occurrences. It seemed to jump back and forth and each chapter seemed to reference another. This book would be great after a few reads to get a feel for the techniques described.
good book for spotting liars.......2007-03-09
the book teaches you about baselinig people, which i thought was pretty good.and also how to avoid falling for these techniques if some one trys to basline you.all in all i thought it was a good well rounded book that covered allot of ground.
Highly recommended........2006-11-24
As a psychiatrist, interviewing techniques are essential. Awareness of "changes" in posture, facial expression, voice tone, limb movement, and speech from "baseline" are extremely important in identifying areas of a person's life where treatment is needed. This book is very helpful.
Although this book is appropriately focused on identifying persons who have committed crimes or "wrongs," the same techniques can be used to become more sensitive to others in order to be a helpful friend, family member, spouse or lover.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a better listener and helpful human being.

the book to have for Pilot job seekers.......2006-06-27
This book goes beyond the average "job hunting" book.
It explains in Detail the specific steps to be hired as a pilot.
I would buy it again.
a must for airline pilot cadidates.......1999-08-31
I not only read the book, I met with the author to prepare for my interview. It was most helpful in my getting hired by a major airline. I gave the book to a friend and he also was hired by my airline. He then gave it to someone else. (Sorry, Irv.) This book is a definite must.
Extremely informative information for future airline pilots.......1997-12-19
As stated above, extremely informative information for the future ailine pilot to be. This book is very easy to read, clear and concise. Irv gets right to the point on all his topics whether it would be writing the cover letter and resume to what color suit to wear to the interview. There is definitely an experience factor that went into writing this very short book.
A must buy for the on-going airline hiring boom.

Book Description
When first published over 30 years ago, The Evaluation Interview gained immediate recognition as one of the best books on the subject of interviewing. Since then it has become widely acknowledged as the essential reference for organizations and personnel interviewers. The American Society for Personnel Administration even named the second edition the ``outstanding human resource management book'' of 1978. Now updated and revised, The Evaluation Interview is more useful than ever. With the increasing globalization of business, cut-throat competitiveness, and corporate downsizing, it is imperative that organizations hire more versatile people and retrain and develop employees already on board. This indispensable guide shows companies how to do just that, focusing on the many applications of Richard Fear's proven step-by-step method for assessing an applicant's work history, education, social adjustment, and motivation. New to the fourth edition are sections applying interview techniques for team-building, for strategic visioning, and for appraisal information feedback--a powerful tool for improving motivation and employer relations. What's more, it includes a new interview guide for college recruiters and forms and guidelines for recording and evaluating the results. The Evaluation Interview, Fourth Edition, is certain to continue setting the standards for how American businesses can hire and keep the best employees.

Review of The Evaluation Interview.......2007-03-21
This book not only provided expert subject matter, it also provided a lot of good templates/resources to take advantage of. Whether you are seasoned interviewed/recruiter or just starting in the process, this book will put in the right direction of the true interview.
Quaint, but well worth reading.......2003-05-17
This is an updated version of an old book about interviewing techniques. It is reasonably up-to-date, but it takes a rather quaint view of the hiring process. It assumes that a typical company has a large and politically powerful human-resources department which has been given vast amounts of time, staff, and resources to engage in a fastidiously objective hiring process. It also assumes that a company's management actually knows what the firm's future personnel needs are. Most unrealistically of all, it assumes that HR and line managers actually communicate with one another. Even in 1968 when Chiron & Fears wrote the first edition of this book, this was a pollyannaish viewpoint. In 2003, their assumptions add up to a ludicrous fantasy.
The heart of the book is a detailed explanation of a methodology for conducting structured hiring interviews. It also covers yearly perfomance reviews and related topics. The authors frankly describe how to create an illusory rapport with the interviewee while homing in on the character flaws which might make him or her unfit to hold the job he or she is interviewing for. The flaws the authors think you should be particularly worried about are laziness and stupidity.
It is a useful book for anyone who has to do hiring interviews, even when the company is trying to cut corners in the hiring process. It is even more useful for the interviewee, because after the reading the book, you have a better idea what the person on the other side of the desk is looking for. (By the way, the authors tell interviewers to AVOID sitting on the far side of a desk.)
It is worth buying the book just for the discussion of the dreaded "strengths and weaknesses" question. You should admit to a weakness while proving you don't really have that weakness. A good weakness to admit to seems to be "I don't work hard enough"--- assuming you can convince the interviewer that you are in fact a workaholic.
I have taken a sarcastic view of this book's content, but it is well worth reading and contains many excellent suggestions. Although I personally don't agree with many aspects of Chiron and Fears' methodology, I do think the business world would be a more humane place if more companies used a similar methodology (or just about ANY methodology) to evaluate job applicants.
I gave the book a 5th star for actually being readable and entertaining (unlike most management books.)
a perfect evaluation of an applicant can be quite tricky..........2001-02-24
This books leads you through the application process from the employer viewpoint. It shows you where to, what to consider and how to circumvent traps.
It doesn't provide you with worksheet-like lists where you can make crosses to evaluate the candidate.
