Book Description

Bennett-Alexander and Hartman’s, Employment Law for Business, 4/e, addresses law and employment decisions from a managerial perspective. It is intended to instruct students on how to manage effectively and efficiently with full comprehension of the legal ramifications of their decisions. Students are shown how to think and analyze employment law facts using concrete examples of management-related legal dilemmas without clear-cut solutions. The methods of arriving at resolutions are emphasized, so that when the facts of the workplace problem are not quite the same, the student can still reach a good decision based on the legal considerations required by law, which remain relevant.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars ok, not great.......2007-08-05

I liked this law book because it has shorter versons of cases for quick lookup. What I hate about this book is that it doesn't list laws like ADA, Title VII, etc. in their entirety. It speaks about parts of them, but doesn't list them for you to read yourself.

1 out of 5 stars One-sided approach to regulation.......2004-08-04

I would have preferred a text that merely reported employers' compliance obligations in an objective manner, rather than portraying employers as the enemy. I generally found the text to be highly politicized and, to some extent, anti-management. This book does little to bridge the gap between the business community and academia.

4 out of 5 stars Employment Law for business.......2004-01-07

As an attorney, manager, and teacher of human resources professionals, I recommend this book. I found that thie information was thoroughly researched. I also appreciated that the legal information was presented in a business context so that managers who are not lawyers could understand the information and readily appy it to real life workplace problems.

2 out of 5 stars Useful Book........2003-06-22

This is an interesting, informative and useful book. I used it for school and it will be one book that I keep. Great case studies.

2 out of 5 stars Employment Law.......2003-02-17

I think the book is so liberal and it advocate large government. Freedom is not through following the forced laws like affirmative action, ADA, etc. but having a choice especially in employment. Employer should have the say on what they want and who they want to work and not work. The book pretty much tells you that this is the law and its good for you ,so follow or else.
That is socialistic.
We are giving more power to the government to tie us down with more laws and regulation. Their responsibility is to protect the citizens and not to do business. That's for the private sector.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-16

I purchased the book since my employer explained that I will become an independent contractor for 2007. The book explained everything about being a contractor and how to stay in line with paying the taxes, how to protect my self employed status, what deductions I can take, and what forms and agreements I should use. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the world of self employment.

5 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained.......2006-04-20

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.

4 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice.......2005-09-17

I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner.......2005-07-28

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc. He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on. Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically.

5 out of 5 stars Straighforward intro to the legal aspects of freelancing.......2004-05-04

A potential employer asked that I incorporate my freelancing business before they start sending me jobs. I wanted to do some research on the pros/cons of incorporating, what kind of start-ups costs this would entail, and what kind of corporation I should be. At first, the whole process of incorporating sounded like a huge money burden on my part--with filing fees and taxes--but this book has helped me sort out the issues and provided detailed information about the different ways to incorporate--sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corps. Although I haven't yet decided which path I will take, this book has made the jump to freelancing, and self-incorporating, less scary.

Not only do I understand my choices better, but I also now understand the different structures for businesses and their tax responsibilities. Great distillation of information! The copies of tax forms in the back are also a great reference. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Completely helpful.......2007-01-05

For a small company, this book was just what we needed. It outlined different state requirements, some common pitfalls, and provided sample text for editing. Overall, just what we needed to be a professional little business.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-05

It's very easy to read and has a wealth of information in it.

5 out of 5 stars Worth its weight in gold!!!.......2004-05-18

This book should be on every employer's bookshelf! I am so impressed by how comprehensive, well organized, and easy to use it is. Steingold really knows what he's talking about, he explains all of the complex laws and regulations that trip up unprepared employers and result in expensive lawsuits. Thanks to this book I learned the best ways to comply with OSHA, wage-and-hour laws, sexual harassment and discrimination laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act and many many more. You owe it to yourself to know your rights and responsibilities as an employer and to protect your company from needless litigation.

5 out of 5 stars A mile wide and several feet deep.......2000-11-16

An excelent, readable, survey of the law on this topic. The greatest strengths of the book are two-fold. First, it is written in easy to follow, plain english. Second, it is amazingly comprehensive. I have been practicing employment law in two millenia, and this is the book that I use (after reviewing dozens) to teach non-lawyer classes on the topic. As with any survey book, it doesn't cover the details of the many topics it touches. You don't want to use this book to deal with comprehensive planning or an employment law dispute. But if you read this book you'll understand much of the language and many of the concerns of the experienced human resources professional or lawyer that you need.

5 out of 5 stars Protect your business from employee and government law suits.......2000-09-23

Here is the book that will teach you what you need to know to keep compliance with the law and protect your business. Easy to read and comprehend, this book will help you promote fair business practices and avoid lawsuits. Folks, there are many laws most business people don't know about. This book will bring you up to speed. It's a necessity for the small and large business alike.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but guidance was helpful.......2006-02-25

Teachers and the Law (6th Edition) was the primary text used for my National-Louis University (Wheeling, IL) School Law course. Although the text implies that only information regarding teachers will be discussed, Fischer actually covers legal issues that deal with many levels of educational law including student cases, administrator cases, and even cases that don't involve teachers at all, but loosely relate to educational law in general.

This was my first exposure to any formally-presented school law information and I must confess that I was quite overwhelmed at first. Fischer tends to present a major case very clearly and then fully explains its implications and outcomes. However, he then presents several other related cases that often have conflicting or opposing outcomes to the original point.

What I learned from this text is that there is very little "black and white" when it comes to interpreting school law. I was interested to learn that even the landmark decision cases are still constantly debated in the courts and sometimes ignored when decisions are made by judges or juries. It took our experienced professor to help us understand the subtext of some of the cases and discern the probable reasons why some cases were decided in seemingly arbitrary ways.

In general, Teachers and the Law greatly increased my understanding of school law, but without an experienced professor, I would not have gleaned as much practical information.

4 out of 5 stars Teachers and the Law.......2005-09-18

I received the book in good shape. The cover looked next to new and there were very little marks or highlights in the text.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Teachers.......2003-05-01

Case law, unless done perhaps by the likes of John Grissam, is not page turning material. However, the authors have done an incredible job of putting very pressing and often complex areas into an accessible and engaging book. Written in an easy to use question and answer format, the updated book touches on education legal issues ranging from free speech, to students with disabilities, to internet issues. While of great use for educator (or educators to be), the book could also easily be adapted for classroom use, either as a debate or research starter. Worth every penny of its price.

Ok. I already feel odd writing a review of this book. The anticipated audience is incredibly narrow and if you found this review, you probably know what you are looking for. However, I think this is one of the greatest books. As a law student who is planning on specializing in ERISA, this book has been an invaluable resource to me. It is the first place I turn when I have an ERISA question to research. It won't provide all the answers but puts a very complex statute into perspective. It would also benefit the non-lawyer who might be involved in benefits.

I had to read this for a class and found it easy to read, but really out of date. Although revised in December of 2001, there is so much it left out in terms of changes in technology and 911 (and yes, these things do apply to Economics!) that I wonder how thoroughly it was updated.

If you're buying it, most probably you have to. Ask your professor to find a more current edition, but one that's as interesting and easy a read as this one, and you'll do fine in your Eco class!

This book makes a dry subject interesting and understandable. It is packed full of useful information.

        Book Description

More than 60 years after its enactment, the Fair Labor Standards Act—with its labyrinth of requirements—continues to frustrate even the most experienced labor and employment law attorneys. This complex and largely unexplored area of the law is presented in a single, balanced treatise that will become your reference of first resort as you advise clients, analyze fact patterns, and litigate cases under the FLSA.

The Fair Labor Standards Act goes beyond descriptions of FLSA coverage and exemptions to help you determine why and how you should proceed on a particular course for your clients. You get:

      • point-by-point evaluations of each FLSA exemption
      • meticulous citations and footnotes—with decisions broken out by circuit
      • proven steps and strategies for dealing with enforcement, remedies, and litigation
      • special considerations for determining compensable hours, minimum wages, and overtime pay
      • discussions concerning Department of Labor (DOL) administration, state and local government coverage, child-labor issues, record-keeping, and more

The Fair Labor Standards Act offers practical insights on real-world questions about litigation, remedies, and more.

4 out of 5 stars Good Review of Subject Matter. Clear and Concise........2007-08-22

This book provides a very good overview of the federal law of employment discrimination. While not incredibly detailed about every statute, this book gives you the bread and butter of what you need to know about each of the statues you would study.

Good for a quick review of the subject to go along with your casebook.

4 out of 5 stars For the Discriminating Only.......2006-08-23

I'm a training specialist by trade, and I have taught Sexual Harassment Prevention and Equal Employment Opportunity classes for many years. This book allowed me to appear as a subject matter expert because I was able to offer more depth in specific cases and topics. If you're discriminating about your sources, I know you will buy this.

        4 out of 5 stars Useful.......2006-04-26

I read this book in order to survive a law class. I also used it when I had an interview with the Office of Civil Rights. This book may feel cursory but it covers a large array of material. For those who are constantly suspicious about facing discrimination in the workplace, it may be especially enlightening. Though I gave my copy to a friend not involved in the law, I do worry about it being misused by laypeople. For example, you could be blatantly discriminated against, and this book may point to cases that reflect your own situation. However, if you missed a statute of limitations or your employer doesn't have a sizeable number of workers, etc., your case may be a loser. Still, filing with local anti-discrimination office is supposed to be free and of no prejudice to the worker. Since this summarizes the everyday law, it is not a cute, easy read. But it is useful.
