Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide Review.......2006-03-03
I am coming from a VBA background learning about this new software. This book is a great resource tool for making such a transition. Mr. McAmis stepped me through the learning process in a clear and concise manner. The information was learned in progressive manner, in that, the further through the book I read, the more complex issues were handled. At the end each chapter the author challenged me with key questions to help me remember the most important issues.
Not What I Wanted or Expected.......2004-05-27
I'm afraid I have to agree with the review from "A reader from Cupertino, CA" - I, too, am on Chapter 4 and am frustrated beyond belief because my reports look very little like the examples in the book so far. In the case of the second tutorial in chapter 4, again the other reviewer is correct - it's not even the same report!
I bought "A Beginner's Guide to JavaScript" by the same company and was thrilled with it. It was clear, concise and had a "mini-project" at the end of each chapter for the reader to complete to ensure mastery of the concept being taught. I was expecting the same thing with this book, and am sorely disappointed. The explaination of each topic is general at best, incorrect at worst, the tutorials are simplistic and don't include half the information being covered in each chapter, if indeed a tutorial exists at all.
I need to get up to speed on Crystal Reports in a fairly short period of time, and be able to generate some fairly sophisticated reports. This book is becoming a hindrance to that goal.
It's ok.......2004-01-16
It is a beginners book as the title says, but there is a pittfal, the author should consider for future books.
Not every chapter has a step-by-step tutrial. The user have to download the samples and use them to be able to follow the author, which defeats the purpose of learning by doing.
Chapters 4 & 5 make are mutually exlusive, since chp 5 requires reports from chp 4, that was not a step-by-step tutorial.
Either make it a step-by-step or don't. Just be consistent.
This book [is bad].......2003-08-21
This book needs some serious editing
Right now I'm on Chapter 4 and so far this book is terrible in regards to the Projects. The project instructions don't correspond with the results intended and shown. For example, the instructions say open the Customer by Country report, but then it says 'your report should look like this' and shows you an entirely different report! And sometimes the report you worked on doesn't even work for the task you're trying to learn. The author must have had his friends write the other customer reviews. Don't buy this book! It's just unfortunate though that there aren't many choices.
Excellent Coverage and Design.......2003-06-27
Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide covers everything and more that I wanted to learn about Crystal Reports. The information is easy to digest and there are regular 1-Minute checks along the way. Hands-on experience, in the form of Projects, are dispersed through each chapter (the completed projects can be downloaded from the web). Answers to the Mastery Checks, at the end of every chapter, are given in the Appendix.
My only complaint about the book is that, I feel, there is not enough hands-on experience because the projects are too simple. There are plenty of projects, but most of them are simply a number of steps and very little critical thinking. After reading Crystal Reports: A Beginner's Guide, my knowledge of Crystal Reports has vastly increased though I still have little experience with actually creating reports.

Undermines his own credibility.......2007-10-05
I purchased this book due to the overwhelmingly positive responses... While the actual concept and some of the underlying principles are pretty solid, there are a few things that detract from this book.
First of all, the font is about 14pt Times New Roman, which adds to the sense of this book being fluffed. Contributing to this feeling, is the fact that the author continually attempts to provide credibility to himself by mentioning O.C. Tanner, and the "various" projects he's worked on (for which he uses the same five examples ad nauseam). Essentially, he continues to justify why he's qualified to be telling you anything, while dropping the occasional "teaser" about the form you'll be using for the first FOUR CHAPTERS.
The absolutely most irritating aspect of this book, however, is that he's continually trying to sell it to you. In chapter one, he introduces an acronym for "The One Page Project Manager," viz. OPPM. He then proceeds to NEVER use it. Then, he mentions "The One Page Project Manager," so much that if I hear it again, I might end up incarcerated. On page 29, even with 14pt font, he manages to use "The One Page Project Manager" SEVEN times. I'm sure that my few mentions of that heinous term have already provoked certain ire. And by not using the acronym, he ensures that the term is too lengthy to conveniently skip while reading.
Chapter 5 comprises the bulk of the book (being some 100 pages in length - a shocking dichotomy from the previous 12-20 page chapters). Presumably where the "meat" is, it's filled with stuffing in the form of multiple OPPM's, with only the slightest difference between any of them.
To his credit, the concept is good, I think it will work (that's why I purchased the book). But Mr. Clark Campbell needs to realize that he doesn't have to sell his book during the first four chapters, as I already bought it.
2 stars for utility. -3 stars for absolute aggravation.
Tool saved my now-complete project.......2007-09-25
I was tapped to manage a complex team consisting of writers and developers for an integrated product. I couldn't keep the 14 and more people, assignments, timelines, and critical path on a page I devised. So, I googled 'one page project manager' and this amazon link popped up. I bought the book, got an online copy all on Friday night. By Monday, I had my entire project on the form and by Tuesday, I sent it to the management team. They loved it. The project finished on time and within budget thanks to the tool. A critical path tool may have helped but the project was small enough that by plotting the assignments, I could see the critical path. Great Excel tool!
Simple and effective record of accountability and progress.......2007-08-06
This is one of those great books that delivers what it says it will. The OPPM tool will be useful to anyone who manages projects, and for executives who want to monitor performance without information overload.
I've been using the one-page format to record output from the executive team planning sessions I facilitate. It provides a straightforward summary with clear time-lines and accountability. It is very useful during the follow up sessions!
You can get a good idea of how the OPPM works by first visiting the resources page on the onepageprojectmanager.com website. Then buy the book to find out how to put your one-pager together.
to the point, easy to use.......2007-08-02
Modest book size but the information is suffecient to gain a good understanding of the tool. The one page project manager is all about communicating with seniior management.
Excellent toolbox for experts and beginners........2007-04-14
Easy to read, easy to understand, easy to start working with.
An extremely useful toolbox of concepts ready to be used immediately.
The book reads flawlessly.
It has helped us to design projects in a structured form and to follow them in a very simple way. We have saved time, but gained in precission.

Real Assessment of Mastery.......2007-07-16
I would give this 5 our of 5, but school won't start for another month so I haven't had the opportunity to put this wonderful concept into action. What I can say is that this gives the students the opportunity to shine, to demonstrate their mastery of skills, and to have fun. I plan to use this in my mythology class this year to test drive it before applying it to the rest of my schedule. What attracted me to this was the alternative way of testing students other than the bubble sheets that really only test how well students take a test.
A Great Teacher's Tool.......2006-10-31
Melinda Putz's book offers great ideas to teachers who are tired of assigning the same old tired research paper format. Her ideas stimulate creativity for students and teachers alike. It ought to be part of every teacher's professional library.
Book Description
More and more people are going through higher education, and huge numbers are now working towards Masters level. Increasingly at undergraduate level there is an emphasis on project and research work, and nothing is more important to the student that their final project. Unfortunately many students don't know how to manage the project and struggle with this crucial part of their degree.
This book guides the student through the process of transition from passive learner to active researcher. Covering everything from selecting and refining a research topic, time and project management, to the actual report and the viva. It is ideal for all final year undergraduates and students on Masters degrees. It will also help reduce the load on supervisors, as a large proportion of the supervision process involves taking the student slowly through the steps of how to manage themselves.

Book Description
How do you start a research project? What are the hallmarks of a successful research project? These questions are answered in this practical step by step guide to doing a successful research project. This book systematically explains, in a clear and structured way, the theory of and approaches to research while at the same time helping the student//practitioner to develop the topic of their research and acquire the necessary research skills to undertake the successful completion of a research project. It encourages the formation of critical analysis,
rigour and independence of thought, fostering individual
judgement and skill in the application of research theory and methods. It also develops the crucial skills required in writing research proposals, reports and theses. The particular strength of this book
are the way it combines the explanation of practical and theoretical aspects of research directly with the progressive development of the reader's ideas about their individual research topic. It always refers to the researcher's subject of study - no dry
theorising which is difficult to relate to individual research interests. The book is divided into chapters with explicit objectives, requiring the researcher to apply the aspects of research they have learned in each chapter to the next stage in developing the proposal. It uses a direct approach leading the reader step-by-step through the book with engaging self assessment exercises to reinforce and develop understanding.
