Since 1990, Mel Silberman's classic book, Active Training, has been a runaway best-seller for trainers at all levels and a popular text for university level courses in adult education and training. The active training method which turns the spotlight away from the instructor and put the emphasis on the learner has emerged over time as a proven and reliable method for enhancing involvement, learning, and change. The third edition of Active Training, provides a thorough introduction to the core principles of active training design and delivery and includes a wealth of examples, tips, and techniques. The book has been revised to reflect the latest trends in workforce training and key sections, such as assessment and evaluation, have been thoroughly updated. In addition, a completely new chapter has been included to cover the design of active training for e-learning and online applications.

Excellent.......2007-08-13
This book arrived in excellent condition. The book is easy to read with great examples.
Active Training.......2006-11-10
This book is an excellent supplement for teaching employee training and development as a course. I'd recommend combining it with Noe's text (Employee Training and Development) for a college or graduate level course on this subject. The book is also a good stand-alone reference for teaching aspects of active training to a firm's curriculum development staff.
Activate Your Training.......2006-10-07
Mel Silberman is the master of active training. Just skimming his book gave me a handful of new ideas I applied to my training. Reading the book helped me to revamp my training courses to include many more participatory training exercises.
Everybody loves being involved, talking, interacting, and exploring during training. Lecture, however, is too often the default methodology. In some ways lecture takes less time to prepare and is less risky, but is it more effective learning? In this day and age, linear, slow, from-up-front training just isn't effective. Instead, shift over to active training that engages and empowers participants to learn rather than be taught. I'm reminded of Winston Churchill when he said, "I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught."
Silberman gives idea after idea of how to spice up lectures, or better yet, replace them with other a dozen other learning methods that actively involve the participant. The 100+ exercises and examples in Active Training makes it easy to incorporate non-cheesy learning activities that really work.
Wake up your participants! Get active.
Wow!.......2003-03-01
Great book with plenty of practical comments and ideas which allow you to design a truly active session that both, your audience and you, will enjoy.
The best book in training i have read since i am training.......1999-11-03
I have pleasant meetings with you book Active Training at the last weeks. I am very impressed from it. The book is the best book that has been written about active teaching and learning. The book taught me new active ways as well. The book could help you diagnosis your faults at training and remind you what you forget to do. The book is very friendly. Active Training make it clear that you can be the best trainer if you just work for it. "Active leaning" might hurts but it helps you to grow. I am very grateful about the adventures. The book function like a mirror that tell you where your lipstick is not polished , so you can correct it. The book gave me new insights even I am teaching for 10 years already . The book is like a mentor If you like you can give your hands and travel at a virtual exelent training class.

Customer Reviews:
Good if you'd like a quick read.......2004-01-22
This book is a quick read. It glosses over concepts that are covered in greater detail in "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. If you are looking for the fast read, this is your book. If you are serious about improving work relationships, I'd have to recommend Carnegie's book instead.
Gilbert's communication miracles: Is it helpful or not?.......2003-10-19
I found this book to be quite interesting. I liked and disliked this book at the same time. I enjoyed this book because it gave me some insight on situations that could occur at work that I never thought could cause communication problems. It made me realize how many miscommunications could occur at work, other than with the normal miscommunication with a coworker or manager.
Gilbert describes the various communicaton problems that occur not only with a coworker or boss but as well as with coworkers of the opposite sex and with customers. Gilbert also went into detail about how miscommunications can be caused by being the opposite sex from a fellow coworker, employees that feel that their manager or boss is with holding important information from them or by managers or boss's showing favortism to certain employees.
Miscommunication can also be caused by a long term problem that has not been resolved among two coworkers, employees who feel that tehy are superior to other employees and managers who speak down to their employees. All of Gilbert's examples made me realize that even though I have never encountered such communication problems with coworkers, but also to keep my eyes open about future miscomminications which may occur sometime throughout my working experience.
Although I really enjoyed this book and found it to be helpful, I also found some qualities about the book that I particulary did not care for. Before buying this book, I read the quick summary of the book. I felt that the book was a little different form what was written in the summary.
I was expecting there to be more examples related to the situation that Gilbert had discussed. I persomally feel that if Gilbert gave more examples, it would be more helpful when you find yourself in a similar situation. I was expecting the book to give actual ways to handle situations. Like how to confront a coworker. I guess I was expecting a little too much from this book. Overall, I found it to be helpful and interesting and I really enjoyed reading it.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Beginners and Advanced.......2002-09-16
I work in the field of marketing and have dabbled with Photoshop for a while. I now find myself using it more and more since getting this book. I like that the book breaks things down and makes the program easy for the user to understand yet isnt't so simplistic an avid user would get bored. One of my favorite features of the book is the center section; here there are color photos of color swatches, different blending techniques, layering effects, etc. I refer to this section often, rather than choosing each effect on the menu bar and undoing until I find what I'm looking for. This book has a permanent spot within arms reach of my computer.
A Stand-Out Among Photoshop Books.......2002-09-03
This is more than your standard "tips and tricks" book. It gives much more comprehensive coverage of how to use Photoshop for some very specific purposes, from general page layout and design to slicing and optimizing images for the Web. Willard is something of an expert on Web design; I've used her other books on Web design and HTML, but in this book she gives as much focus and coverage to using Photoshop for print design as well as the Web. It's a great all-around resource. The writing is also clear and focused, as I've come to expect from her other books, and she is meticulous about the details. She is a real pro. I'd highly recommend this book for any level of user.
Excellent source.......2002-08-29
Wendy Willard provides an excellent resource for beginners and experienced Photoshop users. There are so many ways to accomplish the same task, and Wendy provides the most efficient, easiest to understand set of steps for accomplishing all sorts of tasks. Her informal writing style makes it easy to stay focused and grasp concepts after one read. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn or brush up on Photoshop skills.
Master Photoshop's powerful tools with real-world uses!.......2002-08-27
Wendy makes learning Photoshop fun and easy, teaching her readers the most practical and useful aspects of Photoshop by featuring examples of real-world uses. With this book, users can mix-and-master Photoshop skills at their own pace by applying the book's easy to understand tips and techniques to everyday project tasks. The book teaches Photoshop's capabilities through easy to follow step-by-step techniques that are specifically designed to create effects that readily transfer to other uses of design and photo image editing. The book is packed with intuitive 'Quick Tips' (my favorite part), helpful 'Notes' and invaluable high-end techniques that quickly result in top-quality, professional images. The best part about this book is that it overlooks nobody. Both professional and amateur web designers, photographers and print designers will appreciate the attention Wendy brings to their specific and often unique industry requirements, helping to streamline their tasks, improve their quality of work and enhance their Photoshop experience.

Waste of paper and money.......2002-10-03
The book has the appearance of a free pamphlet, and has a font size of approximately 18, with ten to twenty unorganized resume samples, most of which have errors which are pointed out on the following page.
There are no guidelines and there is no format. I still don't know what to call a moonlighting position on a resume. What a waste.

Customer Reviews:
156 Ways.......2006-06-21
no longer have to read long books by one CEO! How the author got 100 honest CEOs is beyond me. But he did. 156 wys real good ones! I'm a middle manager with 155 people who report to me and this book was very very helpful and gave me some great food for thought.
Search Amazon Used if you Have To.......2004-05-07
I hear this gem may be out of print. I cannot imagine it is, but if so, look through Amazon's used and out of print titles. Today, you compete with the Internet, voice mail, answering machines, cell phones, television, e-mail, pagers... the list goes on. Getting through is NOT in bad taste or impolite - Doing so shows you care about the person you want to speak to and you owe it to them to get your message across OR if not, then your mssage is unimportant and you shouldn't be bothering them in the first place.
The best advice centers not around deception but around leaving them wanting more! when you call, tell them what you need or want to say but don't say it all! Leave a trailer in their mind of, "I wonder what he or she meant by that?" or "I just HAVE to call back to get more details!" You are competing for a person's time, the only resource that person has that is not renewable. If your message is valuable you need to master Shook's skill set training. Of the 156 ways, if you learn and use only ONE, you will improve your callback response rate. And that's a great thing, you succeeded in competing against all the other noise that's out there. I only ask... make sure your message is worth getting through. Otherwise, don't waste the person's time.
Something for everyone!.......2003-10-14
If you are in business-to-business telephone sales, this is your book! Regrettably out-of-print (call or email the publisher),it contains 156 Ways of GETTING THROUGH,or getting your call returned. All techniques are not appropriate for your business, but so what? There is no person alive in its intended market who cannot benefit out of all proportion to the cost of this book.
Another printing is called for.
Some interesting tipsýbut the book encourages lying........1999-11-20
The book has some good tips on getting your voice mail messages returned, but a great many of these tips involve deception. I don't need to read a book on how to come up with whopper stories-that comes easily for most people. While lying may get someone to return your calls-that is not the reason for your call. You want to build a relationship on a solid foundation-lying to clients does not work!
A very creative approach for having people get back with you.......1998-03-18
This book is packed with fun and creative ways for having people get back with you. I personally used some techniques and was surprised how effective they were.
