Book Description

High school exit exams, college placement exams, and other important high stakes tests require students to answer specific questions-in writing-while under pressure. In fact, the written exercises students encounter are assigned with the clock ticking and anxiety rising, so it is important to have a strong grounding in basic writing skills so that students can do their best when put to the test. 501Writing Prompts uses over 500 sample writing prompts that simulate actual test questions, all designed to help students gain the writing skills needed to ace exams. This book teaches precisely how to pull together the right 250 words or less to answer any writing prompt and full answers and explanations are included with each question.

5 out of 5 stars Writing Prompts for High School.......2007-08-10

I've used this book for journal writing every day. The students like to choose the prompts and write them on the board. It's been a helpful resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Essay Writing Practice.......2007-06-29

This is a great book to get ideas for essay writing practice. It is divided into four sections with Persuasive, Expository, Narrative and Literary writing prompts. There are also graded model essays to show what is expected of students in the SAT exams. It is interesting to see what will give you a mark of 6, 4 and 1!! With 501 writing topics to choose from, you are guaranteed to get plenty of experience as a writer. I think it's a book worth having.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR A FIRST-TIME WRITING TEACHER.......2007-05-14

This not only gives you 501 writing prompts (some not all that great, but there are so many it makes up for that downfall)... it gives you samples of different student writing that fits each style - personal narrative, persuasive, etc. - and rubrics for each style also! I wasn't sure what I was going to do when I was told I was going to be teaching writing to secondary students, but this book eased a lot of my fears and helped me through!

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2007-01-23

This collection of writing prompts has some excellent features. Prompts are organized into three modes of writing: Narrative, expository, and persuasive. Sample responses at various score points are given for several prompts in each section. Many of the prompts are compelling and accessible to students across a variety of writing levels.

As one might expect from a collection of over five hundred writing prompts, there are also a great many that miss the mark for one reason or another. There's enough here, though, to complement any writing program.

5 out of 5 stars Great classroom source!.......2007-01-06

One of the problems facing teachers is students lack of proper written communication. They live in the technology age and their formal writing is reflecting this.

This book was a great source for me to have relevant topics for students. There were topics for EVERY student, no matter his/her interest(s).

I also like the presentation of material. There are rubrics that grade the sample essays on a scale from 1 to 6.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook for all PR students .......2007-07-25

All PR practitioners would benefit from the solid, comprehensive grounding in communications issues presented in this book. The emphasis on cultural and ethical influences presented throughout is vital to all public relations work and the discussion is well presented here. The chapters on writing present useful overviews on the process and common PR materials. However, some descriptions of materials are very brief and all assume the student has an adequate knowledge of basic writing skills and techniques. Readers who really want to focus on writing will want to supplement this book with others that have more in-depth coverage of writing issues and content ideas.

5 out of 5 stars lots of good information.......2004-05-15

The book is barely 500 pages long, but it has everything that anyone would possibly need to know about public relations. There are tons of public relations tools, such as the news release, press release, flyer, public service announcement, pamphlet, brochure, newsletter, fact sheet and media list, and they are all introduced very clearly. This text was required for a course I took in college over a year ago, and I chose not to sell it back to the school because it was so useful. It's great for entry-level workers that are trying to get acclamated to the business of public relations.

4 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but it will help you get ready for the Analytical Writing section.......2006-06-29

This book won't help you write the great american novel, but it will get you ready for the GRE Analytical Writing section.

It is a great workbook. I borrowed several books on this subject (including Peterson's Writing Skills for the GRE) from the library before settling on [buying] this one.
It helped me understand the mechanics of the Writing section and how to tackle the essays effectively. Each chapter is organized in sections that present a topic and end with a short practice exercise. The practice exercises are numerous, just one chapter has 25 of them. There are many sample essay prompts for writing practice too.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly writen test prep.......2006-03-02

This book is supposed to give readers exmaples of good writing styles and manners. However, there are ample grammar mistakes, typos and junk spoken English. Even in the answers to the practices, I could find poorly writen sentence like:

"Many people are obsessed with video games and television, which I believe are relatively harmless wastes of time."

For God's sake, it just talked about good grammar a few pages before this!

This book is just another junk to make money but not to help readers. I am wondering if I read the whole book, my score will go up or go down!

Book Description

Using no-nonsense language, realistic examples, easy-to-follow steps and practical exercises, this book guides students through various types of public relations writing. A focus on ethical and legal issues is woven throughout, with examples and exercises that deal with public relations as practiced by corporations, non-profit agencies, and other types of organizations large and small. In addition, the book addresses the most comprehensive list of public relations writing formats to be found anywhere--from old standbys like news releases to electronic mail and other opportunities in new technologies.

Laying the foundation for an integrated approach that touches on public relations advertising and direct mail, this second edition is divided into four parts. Part I deals with principles of effective writing useful in all disciplines. Part II focuses on news as the bridge an organization can build to its various publics. Part III takes you through a variety of writing formats and environments that provide an internal or controlled approach. Part IV is the wrap up that pulls together the various writing styles presented in this book as part of an integrated communication package.

Becoming a Public Relations Writer is a different kind of textbook for college and university students. It provides writing instruction for people preparing to enter the profession and guides students with models and step-by-step patterns designed to increase competence and build confidence in students on their way to becoming public relations writers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sound, practical advice.......2007-07-20

Both students and working professionals will find much to learn in this college textbook. The writing and process guidelines are sound, detailed, and practical. The numerous examples and tips for writing different types of PR materials are very helpful for understanding their purpose and use. However, the chapters on writing marketing materials detract from the focus of the book and offer necessarily limited info. Writing skills for these materials are best learned in other, marketing-focused books where they can receive a full presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Useful book.......2006-08-07

Very thorough, modern text that will guide you through the aspects of public relations writing. Lots of exercises in each chapter designed to get you thinking and writing. Practical, useful tips for anyone trying to break into the field or just polish up skills.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-09-29

This book was sent to me in record time, and the book looks like it was barely used. And the price! It couldn't be beat!

Also, the "real world" advice sections is very useful in providing information regarding what top executives want to see in resumes and cover letters.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Copywriting.......2004-01-09

This book is essentially a textbook on the craft of copywriting, and it's too bad that not all textbooks are this entertaining. Of great use to students, teachers, novice copywriters, and pros, it is unquestionably one of the greatest single sources of information available on copywriting.

Agencies use it as a training resource. It's used by universities, art schools, and the American Management Association (it's the basic book for their copywriting seminar).

The book provides a solid foundation in advertising history, copywriting, and marketing. It covers the bases as far as the different forms of advertising are concerned and does it so well and clearly that even a person with absolutely no knowledge of advertising or copywriting would easily understand it. It is a great introduction to the fundamentals of copywriting and their application to advertising in all the various media.

One caveat, while this book is still extremely useful, a new, updated edition is now avaialble. While the newer edition definitely has more relevant information in it, the older version is still an excellent guide and cheaper to buy. I picked up both at a discount and am glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Copywriting course between two covers!.......2002-11-23

If you are looking for a foundation on which to build a copywriting career then you should buy this book.

It lays a solid foundation in advertising history, marketing strategy, and copywriting. Even demonstrates how to write various types of advertising. It's no hyperbole to state that it is a whole course on copywriting fundamentals between two covers!

If you are serious about becoming a copywriter, your best move is to get this book first.

5 out of 5 stars This book can improve your writing..........2000-06-06

For many years, this has been the #1 college textbook for communications majors. It imparts the principles needed for one of the most harrowing jobs in the world of business -- writing the copy for ads and commercials. (But as a matter of fact, most of the principles of copy writing are also the principles of good writing in general, so you don't have to be an ad man to benefit.) The author says, "Having a good time is one of the ways you make great advertising." And this book is fun! Even better, after reading it, you will never look at any advertisement anywhere the same way.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Book for anyone starting an advertising career.......2000-01-09

The book is full of case histories and self-tests.

It is written in an easy to read manner and is very visual in its layout. It mainly tackles the creation of ads and campaigns and traces the history and evolution of the creative process.

Strongly recommended to students and younger executives of advertising.

I also recommend Ogilvy on Advertsing which deals also with the professional aspects of agency work.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best introductions to copywriting available........1997-08-21

This is one of the best hands-on introductions to copywriting available. It's perfect for beginning students and even as a refresher for old pros. It's chock full of exercises designed to get you thinking about creating good advertising instead of mimicing what already exists. Simply a must for anyone interested in copywriting as a career
