3 out of 5 stars Good writing tips but not applicable to dynamic workplace.......2007-03-13

Some of the basic writing tips regarding word choice, sentence length, reading level, and formatting are great. The rest might apply if your company has never documented its policies and procedures before or if you work in a static workplace (government office?) where policies or procedures are added or changed only a couple of times a year (do people really still print these on paper?) However, if you work at a dynamic, constantly changing company that must respond to thousands of different customer queries a day, much of the advice is not applicable.

5 out of 5 stars A LONG history with this title..........2006-04-04

I have used this book frequently as a business consultant and teacher over the last 10 years. It is THE "How To" book on the subject. It goes very well with POLYPROC Policies and Procedures (also available on Amazon - search on Polyproc or Sarbanes Oxley).

4 out of 5 stars Excellent. Easy to read or use as a reference........1999-11-09

No dry reading about theory here. Ms. Campbell has created a very useful tool.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Hard to Understand.......1999-11-03

I found this book hard to understand and it didn't follow any great pattern or flow.

3 out of 5 stars Useful, but a bit too general.......1999-05-18

The book is easy to read and understand. It provides helpful guidelines and background material to design procedures. It works a bit as a checklist, in order to remember all the elements in procedure writting. However, it's not meant for any particular industry, and is very general. I would have liked to find more specific examples, and maybe sections for particular industries.

I bought several similar reference books at the time of this purchase. Effective Business Writing is my go-to book, my first choice, and usually all I need.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference book - - timely, too!.......1999-04-22

This is a well-written, carefully organized book that belongs on desks across America! Topics covered include organizing before writing, overcoming writer's block, suiting letters to complex situations, and using grammar and punctuation properly. If I had to provide one criticism, it would only be that the book is too short! As a reader, I didn't tire of the useful sample letters and would have happily read more and more. A great reference for the tentative writer and a good refresher for seasoned writers, as well.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good basics, but needs updating.......2000-07-20

This book does a good job covering the many basics of making an effective presentation, including dealing with anxiety, personal appearance, planning and preparation. However, it needs to be updated to reflect the many changes in presentation technology (and technology in general) since 1993 that are available to the presenter.

For example, to quote from page 55, "CD-ROM Players--These 'read only' players (you can't record onto them from your own computer, yet!) can hold a gigantic amount of information. Some disks contain an entire encyclopedia. These devices can store color photographs, video clips, sound clips, huge data bases and other types of information that require a lot of memory. There is new technology available that will allow you to take a photograph, have it transferred to a CD-ROM disk and then bring it up on your computer screen." What next, phones without wires? Overall a good book on the subject of preparing for and delivering presentations as long as you're not looking for any tips on PowerPoint or technology-based presentations.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and to the point, good for a beginner.......1999-03-02

I would say if you never put a presentation together, or looking for few ideas in putting a presentation together, this book is for you. The material is concise and gives good backgound on how to put a professional presentation together. I recommend it to a beginning managers and executives that want to evalute their presentation mode.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent instructional reference.......2000-10-19

Loud and Clear is an outstanding resource for producing an effective presentation. The emphasis on audience analysis, which is so often overlooked, is excellent and will lead you to focus on the things that matter for your presentation. I especially liked the exercises suggested by the authors. Do them; you will learn more about your style of communication and your ability to connect with audiences than you had ever imagined. This book is probably most effective for newer presenters who need a foundation in the building blocks of assembling an effective presentation. But, it will also be instructional and valuable to check the effectiveness of more experienced presenters. Overall Loud and Clear is a concise, well-written recipe for effective presentations

An estimated 30 million presentations are given every day in offices around the world. Judging from articles like “PowerPoint is Evil” (Wired) and “PowerPoint Makes You Dumb” (New York Times), which have been appearing in recent years, most of these presentations are probably not having the hoped-for effect. Jeff Van West wants to change all that. In Effective Presentations, Jeff will help transform your style and technique so that you will be making an impact with your dynamic presentations in no time. Jeff will teach you a structured yet flexible system to take you from concept, through design and development, and into delivery. In this video-based tutorial, Jeff tackles the complete process—from defining your mission and weaving a story, to the on-screen options for presenting data, selecting images, and integrating sound. Jeff also covers proven skills and techniques that will help prepare you to present. Exercise files accompany the training videos, allowing you to follow along and learn at your own pace.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hideous Software.......2007-02-18

Not your typical CD-ROM. Built on an exceptionally buggy version of Macromedia Projector, this is by far the balkiest software that I have purchased in the past 15 years.

The content is excellent, from what I've seen of the 20% or so of the software that doesn't generate fatal errors.

Sadly, it's the "meat and potatoes" portions of this course that appear to be the buggiest.

Even on those chapters that DO run without errors, the video feed often disappears for minutes at a time (the audio plays fine...but this is a visual course on "How to Present" which defeats the purpose!!) There are also random Apple Quicktime errors as well.

I've tried using this software on several different machines (both XP and Vista). Nothing works.

Please do yourself a favor and look elsewhere!

5 out of 5 stars The Handbook of Successful Meetings.......2006-12-06

Marion E. Haynes has written a book with a good grounding in planning, organizing and running effective meetings. Although the book is brief, it is packed with what it takes to plan, execute and manage productive meetings. The author highlights the critical role of the meeting leader to ensure that a meeting progresses to its stated goals, ensure that all participants make their contributions, moderate conflicts, deal with disruptive and inattentive participants, summarize action items and closing a meeting on an upbeat and positive note.

This is a well written book that is written in plain English and that is easy to follow and understand. Readers will learn, among other things, the importance of having clear agendas which states the purpose of the meeting, starting and ending meetings on time, problem solving, stimulating participation and discussion and writing the record of the meeting, following up on action items and evaluating meeting effectiveness.

The book is an important reference guide that is well worth reading.

Nice, short, concise format for managers. Gets to the point with some meaningful tips beyond introductory level, going to addressing meeting problems and meeting follow-up and evaluation. Simple quizes to evaluate your understanding of the books content as you go. Example checklists help you get the meeting right.
