Book Description

The Power of Appreciative Inquiry describes a new strategy that inspires people and brings about a higher performance level in any organization. This method encourages people to study, discuss, learn from, and build on what works well when they are at their best, rather than focusing on what's going wrong.

The theory, practice, and spirit of this approach to organizational change is described in plain language. The authors provide guidelines for defining the change agenda, initiative, or project; forming the "steering team"; and launching an organization-wide kick off. Case histories demonstrate how organizations can attain sustained positive change by studying their strengths.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book describing important new planning tool.......2007-10-17

The book, written by Appreciative Inquiry (AI) pioneers and current thought leaders who continue to fine-tune this approach, provides an excellent overview of the AI philosophy and is accompanied by concrete examples that show its value and application.

5 out of 5 stars A Life-Changer for Me.......2006-12-12

Appreciative Inquiry is a process that I feel is one of the most powerful there is for - as the subtitle of this book says - offering a practical tool to create positive change. It's easy to talk in abstract terms about change and improving the world, but it isn't often we come across a way to actually make it happen in concrete terms. AI is one of those tools. This book offers a very thorough guide to the history, mindset, methodology and diverse potential use of this powerful process. In addition, it was instrumental in the startup and methods that I now use in my own coaching, consulting and training firm. It was both an inspiration and a way of approaching the world that has helped me grow tremendously.

5 out of 5 stars The right balance of principles and methodology.......2006-11-03

As an OD professional, I own a dozen different books on AI. This book is the one I most frequently buy for my business leader clients because it offers a great balance between principles and methodology. The clear writing, ongoing case examples and useful tips make "The Power of Appreciative Inquiry" a powerful resource for consultants and managers interested in putting AI into immediate practice.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciative Inquiry.......2006-09-28

This is an excellent book. It is very readable while it explains the theory and foundations of AI. There are examples of its use in the for profit and non profit world. I have been involved in strategic planning for several year with non profits and this is one process that folks get excited about. I would highly recommend this book and "The Appreciative Inquiry Summit" to get a practical outline on how the process can be put into practice with groups and organziations.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical.......2006-05-03

As a professional organization development consultant for over 20 years, I have found The Power of Appreciative Inquiry extremely helpful, not only in change consultation but in many other aspects of working with human systems. I recommend it highly.

Book Description

Accomplished authors, Preece, Rogers and Sharp, have written a key new textbook on this core subject area. Interaction Design deals with a broad scope of issues, topics and paradigms that has traditionally been the scope of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design (ID). The book covers psychological and social aspects of users, interaction styles, user requirements, design approaches, usability and evaluation, traditional and future interface paradigms and the role of theory in informing design. The topics will be grounded in the design process and the aim is to present relevant issues in an integrated and coherent way, rather than assembling a collection of chapters on individual HCI topics.

KEY FEATURES:
* This truly integrated approach to HCI provides students with background information from psychology, sociology, anthropology, information systems and computer science
* Provides principles and skills for designing any technology through the use of many interesting and state of the art examples
* The author supported, highly interactive Web Site provides resources that allow students to collaborate on experiments, participate in design competitions, collaborate on design, find resources and communicate with others

5 out of 5 stars A thourough and very thoughfull 2nd edition.......2007-10-22

Congratulations for the 2nd edition. Now everything fits in its proper place and the chapter sequence makes sense and gradually takes you from the basics of intercative systems design to design methodologies and evaluation. No more jumping around to achieve a logical subject sequence that we had to do with the 1st edition. Of course, I will keep using it as the main reference book in my lectures on User Centred Design.

5 out of 5 stars Desining Interaction Design.......2007-09-23

So, I bought this book "Interaction Design, 2nd Edition" by Sharp, Rogers and Preece, and I thought maybe the world is interested in my two cents. So here it goes ;-)

Despite the fact that the authors use a lot of words in order to explain even the simplest facts, the book is written concisely and presents a clearly understandable train of thought that leads from the very first introductory page to the very last reference page. The authors start out by giving small introductions to every chapter, explaining what is covered on the following pages. A large amount of boxes with extra information and "comments" help to deepen the insight of the covered material. Many pictures, drawings and graphs visualize very abstract sections and a (very) short summary after each chapter is of great value when you would like to freshen up what you have read earlier. The book's layout clearly is geared towards students, as it incorporates many colored boxes and pictures, without, however, being inconsistent. This makes it possible to skim through the book and look up some information without reading through entire sections. Experts in Human-Computer Interaction might wish for a lower amount of examples to bring a point across and would like the authors to have focused on the details a little more. Also, the fact that the authors make a lot of inline citations gives rise to the impression that they only repeat other's ideas. Yet, in fact, the book incorporates a fair amount of the authors' research (as one can easily see in the references), which is presented most modestly.

The book is literally on interaction design, NOT usability testing and NOT on other HCI methodology. If one is interested in that, I would strongly recommend Kuniavsky (2003) and Rubin (1994). If you are interested in interaction design and the principles that lead to a good user experience, this book is for you. Especially novices in ID will appreciate the level of detail, the amount of examples and extra information and the thorough explanations. Experts will find this book helpful and invaluable, yet sometimes a little wordy.

5 out of 5 stars An essential introduction to HCI.......2007-05-16

I think this book is a must-read, essential of the introduction to HCI.
It covers all the important aspects of interaction design with an important and coherent message--user-centeredness for design. It is not a mere collection of the elements that need to be learned in HCI. The authors emphasize the importance of user-centeredness in interaction design, and exhaustively and thoughtfully integrate all the knowledge that is essential to this approach in the field of HCI.
I would strongly recommend this book to any serious instructors for HCI who like to teach the state-of-art directions and approaches in user-centered interaction design in HCI with covering all the important concepts founded in cognitive psychology, software development and design methods, and various user study techniques to be used in interaction design.

4 out of 5 stars I barely spent time on this textbook........2006-12-23

It was somehow helpful to understand on some topics.
However, Interaction Design is kind of subjective topic.
Hence, I think this book is quite good on giving some examples to make a clear point.

    Book Description

What it means to be a self - and a self communicating and being in a particular culture - are key issues interwoven throughout Min-Sun Kim’s impressive text, Non-Western Perspectives on Human Communication. Going beyond cultural descriptions or instructions on adapting to specific cultures, the author interrogates the very core assumptions underlying the study of human communication and challenges longstanding individualistic, Western models on which much intercultural research is based. Kim proposes a non-western way of conceptualizing identity, or the "self" - the cornerstone of cultural research -- illuminating how traditional western and non-western views can be blended into a broader, more realistic understanding of cultures and communication. Grounding her work in a thorough knowledge of the literature, she challenges students and researchers alike to reexamine their approach to intercultural study.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for enhancing facilitation!.......2004-04-16

I found The Art of Facilitation to be an easy-to-read, complete guide in helping to better understand facilitation. I suggest that every beginner facilitator should read this. The authors wrote it specifically outlined and detailed, yet not too complicated. It is a good book to keep close by as a quick reference source. The breakdown of the book allows it to be a wonderful training guide complete with a toolkit to assist your every need of facilitation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on facilitation.......2002-07-04

A very good book on one of the most difficult arts that of drawing together a group through facilitation.

5 out of 5 stars Distinguishing Facilitation Powerfully and Simply.......2000-03-31

The Art of Facilitation is written in simple language. It cuts through the academic tendency to complicate this domain, and in doing so displays the authors mastery of it.

The Art of Facilitation elucidates what it takes to facilitate groups powerfully and provides pathways, tools and processes for this.

This book will provide people new to facilitation with an intellectual analysis of it and old hands clear pathways to doing complex things simply. I use it all the time as a resource in my pratice as a professional facilitator and it is the required text in facilitator training courses which I lead for Zenergy.

I would also recommend Hunter et al's other books: Co-operacy, The Zen of Groups, The Essence of Facilitation.

4 out of 5 stars New Facilitators must read!.......2000-03-28

The Art of Facilitation is a must read for new facilitators or trainers. It is easy to read and offers practical advice and activities for newcomers to the field of facilitation. This is one of the few facilitation books to offer a chapter on facilitating yourself. Not as advanced as other facilitation books (Masterful Facilitation or Facilitator's Guide to Particiapatory Decision Making) but recommend this as part of any facilitator's library of resources.

4 out of 5 stars A great guide for "first time" facilitators!.......1998-09-15

I have found this book a great resource to augment the training of first time facilitators and coaches. It provides many practical exercises, with numerous tips that help to demystify facilitation and increase the first time facilitator's success.

    Book Description

Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) is the enabling technology for hands-free dictation and voice-triggered computer menus. It is becoming increasingly prevalent in environments such as private telephone exchanges and real-time information services. Speech Recognition introduces the principles of ASR systems, including the theory and implementation issues behind multi-speaker continuous speech recognition. Focusing on the algorithms employed in commercial and laboratory systems, the treatment enables the reader to devise practical solutions for ASR system problems. It addresses in detail C++ programming techniques used to develop ASR applications, thus offering skills that will prove useful in any large C++ based software project. Possible extensions of the well-established ASR technology are highlighted, based on "Hidden Markov Models" applied to fields such as modelling and prediction of econometric series. Features include: A crucial source of information for researchers, developers and project managers involved with ASR systems, Speech Recognition is also structured for use by students of digital signal processing, speech recognition and C++ programming techniques.

    2 out of 5 stars A Confusing Book.......2004-07-27

For studying the speech recognition subject this is not the right book to buy, It is hard to understand the theory using this book.
The c++ code works but there should be more remarks to make it easier to the readers to get along.
There is a free toolkit to download from the Internet named HTK
that contains full C code and a free book to the same theory so actually it is a waste of money to buy this book !!!

5 out of 5 stars very good book if you read its code.......2003-08-21

This book is composed of two parts, theory and implementation. if you only read its theoretical part, it is ok with many details missing. it is not clearly written. however, if you study its C++ code, you would get all you want on recognition system. I spent 3-8 hours everyday for 4 months going through its code line by line. The C++ code (30,000 lines in total) is very well written but without comments. Many times, I need to figure out things not written in the book. I once spent 1 week on 200 lines of code. However, After 4 months, I truely understand the system.

You will find this book useful only if you really spend time covering its C++ code line by line. If you want theory only, goto read other books.

I rate 2 star for its theory and 5 star for its implementation.

    [website]

3 out of 5 stars Good Starter but Confusing........2001-05-31

I appreciated the balance between theory and implementation in the book. Also the content covers the most important topics. It is unfortunate that the book contains numerous typo's and confusing choices of symbols. The errors are often right in the most critical places too. The explanation of the theory of HMM's for example. 0 and 1 are chosen to represent both white and black balls and 2 different urns all in the same diagram. When trying to sort out which is which the reader will be further confused by blatant errors where a 0 should be a 1. I am afraid many new readers will find frustration on the theory sections.

The choice of C++ and inclusion of a CD-ROM with full source is a nice touch however. Just be aware that the code is not geared for real-time recognition.

5 out of 5 stars speech recognition c.......1999-09-08

I want to know about HMM. And c-source code

    4 out of 5 stars Useful application-oriented book........1999-08-21

This book is very useful for persons willing to implement a speech recognition system based on hidden Markov models (HMM). The authors provide the source code of a complete system. Each chapter is divided in two parts: theory and implementation. Some implementation issues are of interest only for those who develop code in C. I think this implementation-oriented book is a good complement for a theory-oriented book, as "Fundamentals of Speech Recog." by Rabiner and Juang. I really couldn't understand an appendix about "Econometric", that mainly discusses HREH (?) and just mentions HMM in the very end. The references related to this appendix were mixed with the ones related to speech, with an annoying result.

What distinguishes this text from many other OB offerings is the excellent exercises at the end of each chapter. I've used this book in leadership training sessions with working managers, and the class participants have been very happy with it, as have I.

I unfortunately wasn't able to use this book as much as possible because it was the wrong edition. The material inside the book was okay, but some chapters ended abruptly and left you wondering if you missed information.

      Book Description

Almost everybody does it--lie, that is. In one recent survey 93% of people admitted to lying regularly at work! Why? Because it's safer than telling the truth.

Sadly, organizations cannot succeed in this poisonous world of half-truths, strategic omissions, and doctored information. To function optimally businesses must create an environment where people feel free to tell the truth, no matter how disturbing. Only then can organizations unleash the responsiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm necessary to achieve their goals.

This unique book shows how, using the formal process of "dialogue," such a place can be built. In a lively discussion, the author shows managers how to use this technique to: * encourage truth-telling by reducing fear, prompting self-examination, and opening minds * build trust where suspicion and cynicism held sway * inspire individuals to think and learn as a group * help groups talk through tough issues and move to collaborative action.

Now out of print- this book sells for more than it's original publication price. It is used as a textbook in several org. behavior classes. Is referenced in more than one Ph.D. dissertation. The author (me) facilitates this form of dialogue successfully with gay and conservative christians, within the intelligence community (WMD was a communication issue) and with other difficult groups. THe book describes a process that is reliable, easily duplicated, and adaptable. This isn't a popularity contest. This is about helping people get past angry attacks and move on to collaborative partnerships. Check it out if you want to make a positive difference in the world.

It's truly hard to believe that a publisher thought this book was
worth publishing. It's 250 pages with several empty cliches per
      page.

What is it about organizations that creates so many secrets? In this bright and enjoyably written book, Annette Simmons reveals the subtle art of allowing people to share the secrets througth dialogue. From identifying the escape routes to explaining the step by step process in which dialogue unfolds she clearly identifies what you can expect if you simply follow the directions. She even includes directions. I immediately used this book in a two day retreat that was astounding in helping a California State Agency work through the change process.

5 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read mix of the "why" and "how" of dialogue.......1999-08-04

Dialogue is a difficult and potentially fear inducing process. The author admits all that and gives the reader the background and a process to facilitate and engage in dialogue. The book is easy-to-read, free of unnecessarily confusing jargon, and full of good illustrative anecedotes. The author recommends some unorthodox facilitative roles based on her experience (some of which I had thought of before I read the book, but was afraid to try out). I found myself jumping from section to section to follow my interest---this was not a linear ead for me. The appendix on how to get dialogue started with a group is also helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough Overview Provided.......2004-01-27

Dr. Littlejohn does a masterful job of describing the various theories in human communication. The book is divided into manageable segments which place the theorists into understandable blocks. Before introducing the various theories, however, he discusses the nature of academic inquiry and what theory building is all about.

His various categories of theories include: general theories, thematic theories, and contextual theories. A person familiar with the writers in these various categories will find this book easy to follow, however beginning students need to be prepared to spend a little extra time with some of this material as it can be challenging when you're exposed to it initially.

3 out of 5 stars Theories of Human Communication.......2000-11-07

It is a very intense book on multiple communication theories. Also a very good book if a person is studying in the communications field. Although, the overviews of each theory is brief, it makes room for most communication theories in the field. (For more in-depth information on some theories, you would want to consult a Communications Journal.)
