    Book Description

Technical Communication represents the works of five highly respected authors, all writing in their areas of expertise. Scientific examples and assignments within a social context are used for a realistic view of communication issues. This is the only text to extensively address argument, including reasoning, credibility, persuasion, decision making, problem solving, and critical thinking. The topic of audience is also addressed more thoroughly than in any other text. The book covers the traditional parts of the technical communication course but has been updated greatly to respond to the demands that the computer places on communicating.

    1 out of 5 stars Dreadful.......2007-05-21

This book was required for a graduate course in visual communications. The book is written in a style of chest-puffing academic balderdash that renders it useless and unreadable. Crummy paper and truly ugly illustrations add to the miasma. I usually keep classroom texts but I'm selling back this one. I won't get much money though because it's so poorly bound that it looks much more used than it really was. Poor unlucky student who buys it.

    1 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2005-09-12

The content of this book is not bad, but the actual quality of product is horrendous.

I have had this text for about a week and the pages have already become unbound. Some of the pages look like they were printed on a photocopier running out of ink. The text is fine, but the graphs look terrible. One would think that a book about design would have put more thought into their own design and production run.

My gripe is simply that this book is too much money for the truly piss-poor physical quality. $76 for a book whose binding became unglued in the first week? $76 for a text whose pages look like they were printed on with an empty toner cartridge? This is a sick joke! Designing Visual Language is a piece of junk and Allyn & Bacon should be ashamed of themselves for having no quality control.

    Addendum...
I'm wondering why people have not found this review helpful. Is it because they want to buy a book that is poorly made? If so, I invite you to buy the book. Unless Allyn & Bacon make some serious changes, you'll soon think, "Maybe his review WAS helpful after all!" but by that time you'll be out $76.

4 out of 5 stars Designing Visual Language.......2001-07-14

It reads kind of like a text book, but the information is very good. I am trying to learn about graphic design in my free time and this book has helped me to better understand the basics of visual communication. I have also reciently read "The non-designers design book", which I also recommend. This book starts at the beginning and helps you to understand what you must do, and take into account in order to make something visually pleasing. It has helped me in my design efforts. The book was lent to me and now I plan on buying it, it was so good. I might even look into the rest of the books in the series. (The Allyn & Bacon series in Technical Communication) All in all a good book. I give it 4 stars

    5 out of 5 stars Value-Add Resource.......2004-11-10

I manage a training and development "University" for a large corporation and have, over the years, purchased many different types of training resources including on-line classes, workshops, tutorials, and self-paced training manuals. I think that self-paced manuals work best because they save money, time, and get the best results. Instead of flying a trainer (or my employees) all over the country to meet together, they can work on the manual at their own desks. Also, instead of pulling our employees away from their clients or potential clients, they can work on a self-paced manual when they have some down time. In terms of results, I have found that when people complete a manual like this, they are more invested in their own learning and tend to retain more of what they have learned for longer. I have seen many other self-paced training manuals but have recommended this one because I think that the format is very user-friendly.

I am a scientific consultant and most of my work involves precise medical writing. It is essential that I display outstanding professional writing skills at all times. I focus on organizing and presenting information in a clear and consice manner. I am delighted with this professional writing skills book because it is an outstanding guide to improving written (and verbal) communication skills. Since I am continually trying to improve my written presentations, this book serves as an important learning and resource guide.

    4 out of 5 stars A Trained Thought.......2003-07-14

Professional Writing Skills is a step-by-step self-paced training program to improve business and professional writing skills. It trains you to organize your unclear thoughts and to arrange information in logical units. It guides you to develop your thoughts into a writing plan, and to compose a clear and effective writing plan. The book has numerous exercises. Let that not scare you! Only when you solve the exercises will you realize the common errors that you commit in business and professional writing.

Janis Fisher Chan and Diane Lutovich have trained people in business and professional writing skills. They are an integral part of Advanced Communication Designs, Inc., a training company that specializes in customized training courses in business and technical writing. They have also authored, "Grammar for Grownups", "Writing Performance Documentation", and "How to Write Reports and Proposals".

Business writing is unique by its content, style and purpose. It may include letters and reports to the clients, memos to the employees, request for information, product descriptions and so on. The authors warn, "Errors in grammar, or spelling conveys negative image of the company." Imagine the devastating effects of an incomplete report, misunderstood memo, or confusing information?

The book is neatly divided into six lessons. Each lesson begins with an introduction, an objective and what you need section. The core of each lesson discusses errors in professional writing by quoting a few examples. The authors provide easy to understand and implement guidelines to improve quality of professional writing. At the end of each lesson, extensive practice exercises and writing assignments are furnished.

The first training lesson educates you about effects of unclear communication caused due to ignoring the needs and interests of the audience. You need to decide whether you want to influence or inform the audience. The authors advise, "One of the most important steps you can take to increase the chances of readers getting your message is to look at what you're writing from the reader's point of view." A key sentence that expresses your most important message should be incorporated.

The next lesson teaches you to select the information and to organize them logically. Prepare a list of facts and ideas to accomplish the purpose for writing, and group them into key points. A summary sentence for each key point should be written effectively. The lesson also includes guidelines for composing clear and effective email messages.

In the third lesson, the authors guide you to write the first draft. Reviewing and revising your writing plan to overcome inconsistencies, and eliminating unnecessary information are discussed. An effective opening, simple and direct language always attracts the audience. Above all, writing becomes more readable when thoughts are connected.

The fourth lesson emphasizes on using language that communicates clearly and accurately. Pompous words and phrases, and jargons do not impress the audience. Hence, there is a need to use plain English. The authors opine, "The more precise and specific your language, the more information you give to readers and the easier it is for them to understand your message."

Further, the fifth lesson discusses the need to eliminate unnecessary words that slows down reading, and makes writing tedious and boring. The last lesson speaks about the importance of using correct sentence structures, punctuations and grammar. The authors suggest, "As a general rule, keep the average length of your sentences to 17-24 words, with only one or two thoughts per sentence. If you are using technical or unusual terms, drop the count to 15-18 words." Usually, a long sentence is difficult to comprehend.

Communication is a two-way channel. The receiver should receive and understand the message conveyed. It is important to write to suit needs and interests of the audience. The language for communication should be direct, jargon-free, plain and simple. It is also necessary to be able to organize tangled thoughts into clear logical units. On completing the book, I realized that I had improved my professional writing skills.

I recommend you work out the practice exercises and writing assignments at the end of each lesson. It reflects your weaknesses and highlights your strengths in business or professional writing. It increases your confidence in developing and writing any document - business or casual, formal or informal. Remember the saying, "Practice makes you perfect."

In all, this self-paced training program was fun!

3 out of 5 stars Better than 1st edition but only average.......2007-05-09

I would rate the first edition of this book as an F. This edition is better and I would rate it a C.

The writing is unclear and as other reviewers have noted, the book seems to have errors. I would not trust this book to prepare for the Certification Exam.

Here is one of numerous examples of what I consider to be unclear writing. This one is on page 417.

"... but where older hardware can at best support TKIP, that mode can be supported"

Then in the very next sentence it says,
"Note that CCMP is the default method used in RSNAs and must be supported by all devices supporting RSNA."

To me these two sentences seem to contradict each other. Is CCMP support required or not? In any case, I'll go directly to the 802.11i spec for clarification. At least it's free.

Also the review questions seem to be very simple and do not really require any in depth understanding of the material to answer correctly. Sure these questions are easy to write but how useful are they really? Why not some meaty thought provoking questions like those in the CWNA Study Guide by Coleman with the answers explained - no that takes too much time.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed - Not enough coverage.......2006-12-17

To begin with, I work for a wireless company whose products are heavily involved in monitoring and auditing wireless networks.

These topics (25% of the exam), while listed objectives, aren't really covered properly in the book. For the book, the main (and limited) emphasis in this arena is strictly WIDS/WIPS. However, this is a small portion of the total picture - and are only a subset of the objectives.

Also, this book is very shallow. The meaning, as I understand it, of this "advanced" certification is to state that individuals who possess it are knowable in the area of securing and auditing wireless networks. The book falls short. It DOES provide a good INTRODUCTION to topic; however, nothing is advanced or even really intermediate knowledge of wireless security.

The big "auditing" coverage is using netstumbler. They say things like "hey, guess what?! EAP-MD5 and LEAP are weak". But leave you to figure out why. (** Note: you can take their word for it, which is accurate, however, it won't improve your understanding of the topic or help you with the exam). BTW, if you are curious there is great information on the topic on the net. Too bad none if it made it into the book.

Firmware management, an important topic as this controls bug/security fixes and enhanced security features, is limited to "use SCP to transfer the images". Policy auditing and enforcement - not covered. Network discovery (for management) - not covered (I don't consider the netstumbler topic to even remotely cover device discovery for network management/monitoring). The list goes on.

My guess, not having taken the exam yet, is that this book will not be enough. If it is, then the CWSP is VERY overrated.

I'm giving it 3 stars, because it does give a good introduction to the topic. However, maybe I should give it 2 since it falls so short of its self-professed goal.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2006-12-04

I bought this book because I thought it was well laid out. I am not likely going to take the test. I believe that it will be a great reference book. My boss is very wireless phobic. This book helped me explain the security and the technologies around WLANs so I could move forward with wireless. I am in a heavy industrial environment where running wires is extremely costly. Since security is a big issue I needed this book to help me understand the differences between wireless IDS and wireless protocol analysis. The chapter on this was very good and clear. Other great parts in this book are how it clarifies WPA1 and WPA2 coverage. It explains 802.11i very well.

I have to say the possibilities of hackers and exploits are frightening. I am impressed how the authors cover these vulnerabilities and exploits and explain how to protect your WLAN. The book raises confidence for sure. I like how they explain using Layer 3 security (IPSEC) vs. WPA over wireless is much less attractive. This really is a very useful book.

One last thing, I am positive this book will help with my SOX audit.

5 out of 5 stars Used CWSP study guide - passed exam this week.......2006-12-01

I am currently pushing forward in the Security Arean and getting a grasp at a deep technical level of the challenges faced by Security Professionals. With this in mind it would be a mistake not to take a look at wireless and understand the ramifications for implementing it in an organization. Even for a home user a fundamental understanding of WEP verus WPA versus WPA2 is recommended and to understand the ramifications for buying a wireless client that only supports WEP or even no security mechanism at all.

With all the above said, I wanted to study for CWSP and purchased the study guide and learn at a deep technical level wireless security issues. I think its unfair to only label this book a study guide - I have passed the exam and will reference this book many times as I progress in my career. I have other certifications and generally end up throwing the study guides away because they were so focussed on getting me through an exam versus teaching me the entire subject matter arena they are of little use to me afterwards unless I require a door wedge.

I strongly recommend this book not only to those studying for CWSP, or even evaluating whether they want to put the time into passing the exam and see the material they need to digest, but also to those people in the field challenged with supporting wireless infrastructures. I also recommend the book to home users that might be concerned about the possibilities of sharing their Cable Modem or DSL connections with unathorized neighbors or war drivers because they want to buy a wireless router to have the freedom in their homes to use their internet connection anywhere.

The book compliments the certification in quality and accuracy.

This book is filled with errors and inconsistencies on the simple things. For a study guide and as a CWNA and CWAP holder I expected much better from CWNP. For example they cannot even get the RADIUS acronym correct or consistent. Their other guides were great. The CWAP guide did have some errors too but not as bad as this CWSP guide. I am still waiting on an errata or they better reprint a cleaned up version and give current second edition customers a discount. If they cannot get the simple things correct then that leaves a major question open on the quality of the content they are covering and explaining.

There is a lot of information to cover for the exam and the information in the guide is helpful and structured logically for you to learn and review, but you have to be careful with the errors/misnomers et. al. Also, the inclusion of Chapter 18 is a little confusing. Beyond any security implications chapter 18 would have been best covered in the CWNA guide.

All in all the study guide is not bad but after 2 passes I spent more time sending in information for an errata than getting a confident feeling on what I was reading.
I gave it one star for the errors and quality.

The CWNP program in my mind is top notch but they may have punted on this guide.

5 out of 5 stars Best wireless analysis book........2006-04-10

The CWAP book covers concepts on wireless analysis for physical and MAC layers, IDS solutions, etc. This book should be referred to by all wireless professionals who want to troubleshoot any wireless problem or just understand the different frames being transmitted and received. Additionally this book helped me pass the CWAP exam :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and detailed book about the 802.11 technology.......2005-04-12

Regardless if you plan on taking the CWAP exam, if you're in the WLAN industry, you should at least have it in your bookshelf.
It goes over every field in the 802.11 packets, packet types, etc.
Now, if you're studying for the CWAP exam, you should read it twice and make sure you understand all that is explained in the book.
I used this book on my CWAP exam preparation, and I passed it.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless professionals.......2005-03-05

A great reference book from Devin and his team at Planet3. Well written with many examples and diagrams; they make a tough subject easier to understand. Includes everything you wanted to know about those bits flying thru the air. Worked for over 3 years in the wireless security area - wished I had this book (and the others in the Certified Wireless series) early on.

5 out of 5 stars This book is excellent.......2005-01-31

I was in the beta CWAP class last year in Atlanta, enjoyed it - and found it to be very helpfull in understanding Wireless, down to the very roots it is built on. I never conduct anything to do with wireless - without this book by my side to refer to.

I have not come across anything related to wireless analysis that I needed to implement that was not discussed or referenced in this book.

The knowledge in this book should be added to your wireless toolkit, even if you are not going to be taking the test.

    Great book!

5 out of 5 stars A great book with potential to be an all time great one.......2005-01-25

If this is your first foray into wireless protocol analysis then this book is very very helpful and easy to read but the flow of some of the topics needs to be corrected. For example in several of the first few chapters the authors throw around terms such as mmpdu, bsa, msdu, etc. before they are defined to the reader. The reader does not get the full definition of such words until chapter 5 and 6 and this can make things confusing for the first time reader. Since I had read the Cisco press 802.11 book before, those terms were not strange to me but their placement or use before the clarity could confuse some readers. Also, the Key Terms on page 127 for the chapter #4 of "configuration options and protections mechanisms" looks like the key terms from one of the earlier chapters.

My other issue is that the authors state that PCF is not wildly used and will only be covered in a summary fashion yet there is a lot of detail about PCF.

I disagree with the other reviewers about trace screens there should be more, see the Cisco press 802.11 book.

The layout of the frames and operation are very good and the book does make learning this topic a little easier. I did learn a few new things that I didn't get from the Cisco press book. I used the book mostly for the CWAP went through 4 reads plus 4 read of the Cisco press. I labbed a lot of the protocol traces to learn. The book is very good and does make it easier to learn and grasp. But, there is a lot to cover in this text for the exam. I was able to pass on the first attempt with a decent score.

The book, although very good for a first edition, does have a lot of errors and the errata is growing.

I and others have posted many of the errors to be included in the errata on the CWNP forum.

Overall it is an excellent book but these inconsistencies should be corrected in the second edition. It has the potential to be one of those all time great guides and professional reference once the errors are corrected.

Worth every penny and worth taking the CWAP. I learned a lot from this book....

Probably the only one you need to buy!

5 out of 5 stars Look more clearly at your own strengths and skills.......2007-09-15

By using the suggestions for organizing and presenting information in this book, I have a whole new appreciation for the things I've managed to accomplish over the years. Nearing retirement age, with five successful careers behind me and another just starting up, I still found little niches of self-defeating behavior, ways in which I was emphasizing the wrong thing or ignoring key accomplishments.

More than just a guide to resumes, this book helped me see that the new career change will bring my work life a lot closer to my core values; and it showed me clearly how to be successful from the very start.

5 out of 5 stars The Resume Bible!.......2007-09-14

This is the BEST resume book ever put together. I started a resume wrting business and this is the one I use every day. It is by far the most in-depth (at near 600 pages) step-by-step practical guide to everything you need in specific detail from action verb keywords for specific industries and positions to exactly how to format in Word! Also valuable are the impact-mining questions to generate the copy for a top notch resume AND how to lead into and craft your qualifications summary (a must have). I cannot say WOW enough!!

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for any job.......2007-08-23

I really like this resume book. It was really helpful and has a lot of possible templates, job description vocabulary, it even helps with selecting what font to use for your job title. I would definately reccommend this book for anyone who wants to update their resume.

5 out of 5 stars Very good resource!.......2007-08-14

This book is very good. The only thing that I kept doing while flipping through it is I'd be studying a resume format and then realize that this is the "before" version, and then I was delighted to see the "after" version was there, and quite good. I especially found the examples of phrases useful in putting together a resume. You can go down the list of action verbs and see how many you can use to help describe your accomplishments, such as: "Tripled - Tripled sales volume in an established territory" or "Familiarized - Familiarized customers with company features and benefits". You can scan all the action verbs and make your own sentences. There are pages of them. Good luck to you - this book is sure to help!

Buy Harry's book! I took Juniper factory training from Harry around 2001. He was an absolutely wonderful teacher, and a genuine expert in both JUNOS and IP networking in general. You could tell he had real-world experience to support his system knowledge as a Juniper staffer. If he writes even half as well as he teaches, this is sure to be a great resource.

If you are appearing for JNCIP or read how the routing protocols operate in a multi protocol environment with Juniper routers, your best bet is JNCIP book. The book covers lot of scenarios and case studies in great detail. The author/editors need to be commended for such scintillating efforts on publishing a very good book on Juniper routers. This book not only can be used for preparing for the JNCIP exam but also you can put it in your library for reference. But one thing is for sure, this is a great book and better to have a copy f it. I have benefitted by going through this book.

I passed my JNCIP lab using this book and have scheduled my JNCIE for August 2004. I highly recommend this book to anyone that supports Juniper routers or plans to take the exam.
