Book Description

This best-selling text is more than a comprehensive introduction for the business writing course; it also serves as a post-college reference tool for students launching their careers. Successful Writing at Work takes a practical approach to prepare students for the wide array of communication tasks they will face on the job. The text is recognized for its abundance of realistic situations and problems, broad range of real-world examples, and detailed guidelines for drafting, editing, and producing professional documents and graphics.

To facilitate learning, the text is organized into four sections that build logically and sequentially. Part 1 introduces the basics: keys to effective writing, ethics, the writing process, and collaborative writing. Part 2 explores such simple business writing tasks as memos, types of business letters, emails, and how to conduct a job search. Part 3 covers the fine points of conducting research and documenting sources. Part 4 details more complex business communication activities, from designing visuals and web sites to writing proposals, drafting short and long reports, and making oral presentations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent writing tool.......2002-04-03

Whether you are a novice at writing or just need help wording documents, this book is a wonderful guide. Samples are plenty, complete from determining who is your audience to effective guidelines and checksheets. You will learn simple editing techniques, exercises for practice. Extensive guidelines are given whether you do a resme, letter, research, short and long reports, proposal, charts, etc. Included, also is some instruction on technical writing (manuals, visuals, figures, etc.)

The book is well prepared, easy to read, formatted and designed well for easy reference. You don't have to be a "writer" to use this book. It is for anyone who may write a memo to a proposal in business. I encourage the use of this book; as it is one of the better I have used. ....MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars You must buy this book.......2007-05-10

If you ever think you will have to write a fundraising letter, you NEED this book. Too many people think it is just like writing any other kind of letter but it isn't. There is a rhyme and, more importantly, a reason to it. Don't write a fundraising letter without reading this book first.

Excellent for a review of those with experience and super for those new at the experience. We have used it for both occasions

4 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-01-17

I am not an expert in writing fundraising letters. So, when I found a book with a title "How to write successful Fundraising Letters" it was as if I had won the lottery. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it because I was on a dealine to write a fundraising letter for a non-profit organization for which I had volunteered. I ordered the book, and paid just as much to have it deleivered the next day (local bookstores do not carry it). I found the book to be a tutorial and not something I could quickly benefit from. It is written to teach how to properly write and follow-up a fundraising campaign letter. The samples provided were very specific to 3-4 scenarios and did not offer much context. I guess I was looking for a book with hundreds of samples so that I could pick and choose phrases, paragraphs, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Success at Last.......2007-01-11

I have toyed around with various funderaising letters over the years, reinventing the wheel each time. This book is a tremendous guideline for writing great fundraising letters and has many great examples.
I was able to raise over $100,000.00 in a recent campaign and for the first time I have had a number of people comment on how well the letter appealed to them, and how well it was written. I keep this book close at hand.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge-Based Mentorship!.......2003-02-19

The most comprehensive, single source, small business strategy guidebook I have read and applied.
The tactical processes Robert Frey recommends gets you focused early by crystallizing your business strategy, mentoring you step by step, establishing knowledge-based decision points and executing a successful proposal.
The CD is a great plus with schedules, proposal templates, and more to get you started for your next contract award!

5 out of 5 stars Fellow Small Business CEOs, Institutionalize this Material!!.......2002-12-10

In this blue-ribbon edition, Robert Frey provides enough valuable proposal management detail to establish your proposal department, to write your proposal manager's job description, to outline your proposal team's functions, to produce topflight and winning proposals, and to measure the proposal team's success. And if that were not enough, Frey offers his bravura insights into knowledge management and how this wonderful concept can be realistically and incrementally applied to the proposal development process.

Frey mentors you to success with regard to every aspect of proposal management. Frey's style is not staid and wooden. To the contrary, his love for his audience and his desire for their proposal management success shines forth. I would pay twice as much for the book. My company's proposal win rate this year alone proves the worth of the material in these pages. Invest in it, do what it says, and prepare for the reward.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Proposal Management Information.......2002-11-20

Bob Frey has again created a valuable source of information that should be on every Business Development professional's desk. It presents a clear and concise approach to properly managing the proposal business acquisition process, including creating a winning proposal. The use of Knowledge Management approach to leveraging intellectual property provides an excellent approach to crafting a winning strategy and incorporating it in the proposal. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Resource for Small Govenment Contractors.......2002-05-21

The previous editions of Robert Frey's invaluable book "Successful Proposal Strategies for Small Businesses" have already established this title as a virtual bible of proposal development for small business government contractors, particularly in the support services. Now, with this third edition, some 20% longer and with extensive new material, Frey expands the utility of this important book by integrating his approach with the emerging discipline of Knowledge Management.

In addition to his complete yet concise discussion of nuts-and-bolts proposal issues such as organization of the proposal volumes, establishing the role of the proposal manager, and so on, Frey demonstrates how an effective organization of corporate intellectual capital can be a critical resource in the marketing proposal process. Importantly, he provides step-by-step procedures for creating such an added-value environment.

As in the previous two editions, Frey's approach is very highly application-oriented. He lays out theory when necessary, but his principal goal -- which he achieves admirably -- is to equip the reader with an exhaustively complete set of marketing and proposal development procedures and tools (all the way down to a template for phone lists!).

If I have any complaints at all, it is that the sequence of chapters could use some rearranging; a chapter on internatiohnal proposals seems to be placed unexpectedly, and there is one very brief chapter on private-sector solicitations that could be easily merged with another chapter or deleted altogether. But these are quibbles. This book has garnered a well-deserved reputation as arguably the premier reference work in this field. It is inadequate to state that it deserves a place in every small government contractor's library; it would be more accurate to say that such firms cannot afford *not* to have this book and pay close attention to it!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Work of Art.......2003-12-11

I enjoy reading books based upon Business like themes, and I must say that this is one that has completely stood out from the rest that I have read. I recently started my own business after 20 years of experience, and I must say that this book covers not only all the basic methods to start a business, but also to make it shine amongst the rest. It is practical and brilliant at the same time, and very easy to follow for anyone who has the motivation to start their own business. Pave your way to success and climb to the top, using this book as an essential tool.

5 out of 5 stars One day at a time ..........2003-11-28

A friend recommended this book to me. I was skeptical at first skimming through it, because there's so much information, but with a little patience, I began to see the big picture. It's well organized. Once I worked through a couple of days of worksheets (the worksheets are nicely organized day by day at the end of each section), I began thinking more and more like a business woman. I'm now going through my day thinking about logos and mission statements, target markets etc., and it doesn't come easy, because good ideas never do, but it's exciting. I'm starting to see my business ... my own ideas. There's a good range of examples to help you get your wordings right. Generally, I don't like books that tell readers how easy it is to start a business, providing inspiration without substance, because businesses just aren't that simple. Otherwise, we would all quit our jobs tomorrow. And I don't like textbooks. This book has a nice balance. Some problems though are that it has a lot more information than I can digest in one sitting. So I'm working through it one day at a time, as much as I can. I'm on Day 23. Another complaint I have, I guess, not about the book though, is that starting a business involves a lot more planning than I thought it would. I wish it had more sample business plans, though it has a fairly good one about an online health business, and some of the forms could also have a little more space for writing ideas, some more thinking room. I also came across some typos. But these are minor complaints. Overall, well organized and well worth the money.

    1 out of 5 stars useless.......2003-11-10

If you are proficient with coorporate double-speak this book should be fantastic. I just found it irritating. The workbook format is a good idea, but the author doesn't give good definitions of what he is asking for. After reading the first seven pages I'm completely confused about the differences of a "Mission Statement", a "Business Vision" and "Company Goals". The definitions sound almost identical but the author insists that they are not the same.
I can write complex computer programs, but using this book, I cannot write a business plan!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for those just starting out.......2003-04-10

I bought this book for my son, he found the book very informative and helpful good for anyone who is just starting out

4 out of 5 stars Good overall book, but not enough examples........2002-07-26

This book has helped me a great deal in thinking about my business, but I wish it included more examples of current BPs. That would have been very helpful.

    3 out of 5 stars Good 2nd or 3rd book.......2007-09-14

This book is good, but not great. I would recommend this as a good 2nd or 3rd book to have. Start of with Robert Montauk, as it will provide better context for this this book.

Another thing to note is that thhese are not 65 complete applications, rather 65 essays. I was a little bummber when I realized that.

    5 out of 5 stars Really helps.......2007-01-03

This book has several example of essays that really help you to create your winning aproach not only for Harvard but also other BSchool

3 out of 5 stars Nice to Have.......2006-09-30

Although I do recommend this book for MBA hopefuls looking to get into top 30 schools - not just HBS, I want to add that this is a "nice to have" for the prospective MBA student. It is not a "must have." The sample essays here will inspire you in that, you will see that to get admitted, you don't actually have to be all that great of a writer. In fact, you might read this and wonder just HOW some of these essays led to admission. But I think this shows what I read one admissions officer say about getting in - those who are admitted to top b-schools typically show how they did seemingly ordinary things in an extraordinary way. What I also like about this book of essays is that it shows you how some "broke the mold" and were creative in their approach - yet still ultimately successful. There are some "cookie cutter" essays here, but there are actually some that are very creative and engaging.

A few words of advice if you buy this - one, make sure you pair this with a more comprehensive book on MBA admissions, such as Richard Montauk's,"How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs." Two, remember that you don't have all of the information to evaluate the candidates whose essays are featured. Three, take a look at this book AFTER you've drafted your essays. I know it's tempting to want to see examples when you are having a hard time drafting your own work, but I'd advise only looking at example essays after you've done the hard (and sometimes frustrating) work of completing an entire set of your own essays. This will help to ensure that you are crafting your essays in your voice and in your own unique way. Look at these examples as one way to help you drive your revisions. Four, after you read an essay in this book - do your own analysis of the essay first - before you read the analysis that comes after the essay. Then compare your analysis with the analysis in the book.

Basically, do some really hard work - don't read these before drafting your essays. Do your own analysis of the featured essays. What I believe is that this type of hard work will strengthen your own candidacy and application more than trying to read the samples first and then have what you read influence and drive your first drafts.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Samples & Analysis.......2005-08-10

Different from other essay collection books, it straightly starts with real sample essays & analysis, and both sample and analysis are great. What I like most of this essay, it removes the boring parts of some general direction on "how to write essays." Instead it has analysis of each essay, and it helps me to design my essay greatly. However, if someone needs the guideline of writing essay by each topic, he or she may need one more book.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughts about this book.......2005-05-14

This book shows you application essays of people who have been accepted to HBS. The editors also comment each essay.

Overall, I'd say the book offers a pretty good overview, it may trigger some thoughts and give indications as to 1) what the application office might be looking for, 2) the characteristics of a typical HBS student. I like the fact that the editors comment both strengths and weaknesses of each essay.

    Some 'issues':

    1. The book is created by the Harbus news corporation, an independent nonprofit entity, not the Harvard Business School. Since the essays were not chosen/commented by the admissions office, the sample may not properly represent typical entries (perhaps only the 'best ones', perhaps only ones by students/friends who the editor personally knows etc), nor the factors that actually determine admission (for sure they show factors that _the editors BELIEVE_ are important for admission).

    2. You will not see any examples of how NOT to write your essay. Such a contrasting view would have been useful for figuring out exactly what the admission office is looking for, what they want to learn about you as an applicant/potential member of the community.

    3. You will not see examples of essays of ppl who were accepted to other comparable schools, hence it is difficult to figure out exactly what make HBS students different from typical students at i.e. at Kellogg, Stanford, Wharton.

Usuage: I'd have a look at this book before writing my HBS apps, then contrast my impression of HBS students and the HBS community with what I have learned about the students and community of other schools, following which I'd use this knowledge to properly design essays that match my impression of what the adm office wants to learn about me. With some drafts at hand, I'd show my essays to an alumni/discuss with him/her how to go about/tweak the application.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A pessimistic tone for great information .......2007-10-19

The tone in which the information in this book is presented is discouraging, pessimistic and sometimes condescending. It is a depressive read for someone considering starting a small press. It portraits the publishing business as an unpredictable and scary place where your chances of survival or even barely scratching a living are infinitely slim. It becomes easy to think "why even try?"

The introduction tells you how tough the business of publishing is, how easily disasters can happen, and how sales channels are practically impossible to access unless you are an established publisher. The part that explains that these risks can be overcome or mitigated, and how, is not included. After this initial backlash, the book is sprinkled with ifs, buts, hopefullys, and maybes. In addition, the constant recommendation of answering the suggested questions is not always accompanied by a good explanation of how to find pertinent answers to those questions.

This book could have been so much better if it had presented the same facts and information in a more positive way in the light of the wonderful opportunities that the changes in technology and the internet present to the very flexible and adaptable small press.

5 out of 5 stars The Inside Scoop on Publishing as a Business Not a Hobby.......2006-06-14

For many people publishing is a hobby. It's about producing an art object, a labor of love, perhaps an ego trip. But if you don't want to have a lot printed paper hanging around your warehouse, you'd better learn that publishing is a business. Once again, it's a business, and like any other there are rules.

Of course the IRS establishes the underground rules of any business in the United States. But after that there is a set of rules unique to the publishing business. This book can be viewed as three books in one:

First is the basic rules of any kind of business. This includes such mundane things as bank accounts and business licenses.

Second is the part that is directly tied to the publishing business. The common returns policy in the book industry for instance is quite different than in other industries.

Finally there is the sales aspect. Remember that the day you come out with your newest book, there are at least 600 other books published in the US on that same day. How can you possibly hope to compete? Should you hire a sales force? Should you advertise? How do you get book reviewers to look at your titles? (One way not mentioned in the book but which a lot of people do is contact the people who review a lot of books on Amazon - I know, I get contacted a lot.)

4 out of 5 stars Probing Insight for Anyone in Publishing.......2006-05-12

One of the difficulties in publishing is knowing how to ask (then answer) the critical questions. These authors have been there and guide readers through the details of a publishing house.

If you've never seen a profit and loss statement (and most book authors never have), there is one inside this book and the explanation about how it works. This book is ideal for anyone who works on the inside of a publishing house to understand and be more effective in their day-to-day operation.

    5 out of 5 stars What I didn't know to ask.......2006-03-16

I've worked on the editing side of publishing for years and am expanding my horizons into the actual publishing side of the business. There were sooo many questions I had and even more I didn't even know I should have that PUBLISHING FOR PROFIT answered in a clear and concise way. I suggest anyone interested in the publishing industry read this book, from self-publishers to authors for a better understanding of how the publishing business works and how to work within the publishing business.

3 out of 5 stars Knowledge is key and this books has plenty!.......2005-11-14

Its very hard for me to read "how to" novels, because I am afraid that somethings may be misleading. However, when consulting with this text, I was very pleased with the authors knowledge of the subject and how each topic was handled and presented to the reader. I had confidence in the information and would recommend this to anyone desiring to expand their knowledge in this field!

5 out of 5 stars A very useful reference source.......2000-10-24

This book seems to cover just about any business letter that you might ever need. The book itself is divided into 16 chapters covering topics such as LETTERS OF INQUIRY, BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS, INVITATIONS, and COLLECTION LETTERS. In addition to providing many examples of letters the book also covers issues and approaches to creating letter for various reasons. This is helpful if you do not want to use the example, but still need guidance on how to compose a letter on a certain topic. The book also provides what it calls "useful sentences" that you can plug into a letter of your own design. There is also a "quick reference appendix" that show Forms of Addresses (if you're writing to a politician or dignitary), common spelling and grammar mistakes, and other helpful pieces of information. Overall I rate this book very highly and think that it should be on the bookshelf of anyone that writes formal business or personal letters.

4 out of 5 stars A solid foundation with a not so perfect house.......2000-08-02

Alan Bond's book, OVER 300 SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS LETTERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS gives several examples of actual letters. Examples of just about every type of letter you will ever have to write can be found in this book. It was written as a reference for the business professional and home correspondent.

OVER 300 SUCCESSFUL LETTERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS does not have a lot of tutorials. It does little to teach you to be a better business writer but is a very good source of examples of actual letters.

This book is best when used with BUSINESS WRITING FOR DUMMIES by Sheryl Lindsell-Roberts. BUSINESS WRITING FOR DUMMIES is just the opposite. It does a lot to make you a better Business letter writer but it has very few actual examples when compared to Alan Bond's OVER 300 SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS LETTERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS.

Used together, any person has a formidable arsenal to write a well-written professional letter regardless of the subject or circumstances.

I highly recommend that anyone interested in improving their business witting skills purchase both Alan Bond's, OVER 300 SUCCESSFUL LETTERS FOR ALL OCCASIONS and Sheryl Lindsell-Roberts' BUSINESS WRITING FOR DUMMIES.

4 out of 5 stars Now I only write hit songs.......2007-07-31

Well, at least in my opinion.

I just received the book last night and have read about 1/4 of it. It's great so far, lot's of insight and information. After reading some of Mr. Braheny's info on his web site [...] I couldn't wait to get his book. It's more than I expected, including actual music theory but as it relates to hit songs, not just raw theory. Cool!

I'll write more after reading the entire book, but this is the best thing I've done for myself regarding song writing.

BTW, I also got Pat Pattison's book on lyric writing and barely looked at it - I don't think I'll care for it if I ever get around to reading it. I used to read Pattison's column in Home & Studio Recording mag, although I didn't recall it at the time I purchased his book, and I never cared for his column back then (in the '80s and '90s) either. Braheny's book is MUCH better - no comparison really.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing The Craft and Business .......2007-07-28

"The Craft and Business of Songwriting" has been instrumental in boosting my songwriting career by leaps and bounds. Even though I consider myself an "experienced" songwriter, there are so many things that "The Craft and Business of Songwriting" keeps me reminded and aware of. This book does that and more! It also helps me look at songwriting from a different and somewhat fresh perspective. I truly appreciate the insight on usage of the internet's many resources for marketing and promoting songwriting, which gives songwriters a perspective of the internet and web-based options to explore in helping to grow the songwriter's opportunities in cyberspace.

When it comes to songwriting, The Craft and Business of Songwriting is my bible.
