Beyond a technician.......2007-10-21
Another follow-up and an extension to Michael Gerber's original bestseller: E-Myth. The premise is the same: most small businesses are started by technicians - someone who enjoys and excels at a certain task - but unfortunately, this is often not enough to build a successful enterprise. In this book, Michael Gerber walks through marketing, positioning, leadership, and vision exercises with the reader. If your reading list already includes any of the above topics, you will see a large overlap in content. If you haven't read the original E-Myth, go pick it up now, but if you have, you might want to hit the marketing and leadership sections of your bookstore instead - diversity helps.
Grade School Lessons & E-Myth Acadamy Advertisement .......2007-10-04
This is, at best the beginning part of a working business solution. Yes, Gerber makes a valid point about the E-myth concept (read other reviews if you don't know the concept) but it's really for beginners (newbs). All his books are really just advertisements, for his E-Myth Academy consulting business in the back of all his books. There is nearly no practical information. He makes his point about the E-Myth, then masterbates it endlesly, re-making that point six ways to Sunday, add nausium and leaves you wondering, well, but what should I do? Well, little lost lamb (newb), go to E-Myth web site or call the 800 number where they have a fast talking sales crew and sign up for 2 years of 700 plus a month (I haven't checked lately) consultation/classes.
After you get the point that to make your technical skill pay/function as a business you need to have business skills/know how. You can sign up for the 700 plus per month for 2 years advertised in the back of his books. Start looking elsewhere for actual practical information. Because there are no E-myth books or tapes that have that information. You can do a lot for your business with that kind of money. I'm always shocked at how newbs starting businesses throw money around. Something to buy and a place to buy it, no matter how pretty it all is, doesn't make a successful business, In my observations, it's the major reason new businesses fail. I'm sure some of you with deep pockets or You corperate types who have never had to find the guts or earn the money to build a small business without Sugar Daddy Warbucks help will think I'm wrong. This E-Myth stuff is valid but it it's grade school lessons made to look like some kind of super-profound truth/solution. Well, it is, grade school true, now what Mr. Gerber, where's the solutions, spend, what, nearly 17,000 Sign up for what I thought I was getting when I bought the Books and tapes? What a greedy little tight wad! When are you going to write a book with substance? Hey Newbs! Trust me, yes you need real business skills, there are plenty of great business books out there, take some of that 17,000 and buy some and be careful with the rest you're going to need it.
`Waxing On' a bit Too Much.......2007-08-28
Reportedly aimed at the small business entrepreneur, this book by consultant Michael Gerber probably has a solution for most every problem being encountered by a business owner, but discovering `your' issue may take too long for the typical small business owner/manager - this is a 400 page tome covering everything from leadership passion to product pricing.
Mastery in this book comes in two forms: Entrepreneurial Self-Mastery conveyed through the story of Michael coaching Sarah (The E-Myth Revisited) and her `All about Pies' business, and Entrepreneurial Business-Mastery conveyed through the seven disciplines for building what Gerber calls a World-Class Company. It is not that the book is written as two separated stories; the reader may just wish it was! If you read through the seven disciplines, it is quite possible (although not made easy by the structure of the book or the interwoven Sarah story) to put together a complete manual for the basics of running a business - small or large. The book is recommended for the non-existent small business owner - one with a too much time on their hands.
Too much information for one book.......2007-06-18
I love Michael Gerber, and I love all of the principles of this book. The problem is that he is trying to take his entire masters program and put it into a book. I actually did the masters program, and it was absolutely fantastic. The problem is you cant fit all of that information into a book, and that is exactly what he tried to do. If you really want to dig into your business I suggest checking out his programs, they are relatively inexpensive and worth every penny.
Useless DRIVEL.......2007-03-04
I think I hate this guy more than any author I've ever read. He is infuriating. He talks about business but tries to sound like a poet and a philosopher and is very BAD at it. He acts like he's Obi Wan Kenobi, here to teach us the deeper spiritual meaning of entrepreneurship. GARBAGE!!! The more I read, the more angry it made me, because I kept waiting for him to get to the dang point and give some great business advice. But it never comes. It's just more and more garbage!!! The last straw came when he said something completely ridiculous that made no sense. It was so convoluted I can't even remember exactly what it was. That's when I finally realized that this guy is just a freaking clown! He's a fraud! In the end I have concluded that this book is nothing but a snake-in-the-grass advertisement for his stupid business consulting service. Boy do I hate this guy for jerking me around like that. I want to slap the person who recommended him to me and said that he's brilliant. He is just one of those extremely emotional/feeling people that are full of garbage. Screw this! I want practical information I can use. I want info from a successful businessman, not a clown!

Customer Reviews:
Didn't find anything that was useful or particularly interesting.......2007-03-20
I had high hopes for this book what with Dr. Allen's apparent endorsement and Jay Cross writing a positive review of it. I found the book dry and boring. I started each chapter with the hope that it would reveal something useful that could be readily applied, but each chapter ended flat. I found a great deal of wisdom in Dr Allen's books. I was hoping that this book might give me somewhat of a different perspective that would expand upon (and even disagree with) the instructional design perspective in Dr Allen's books. Instead it caused me to want to go back and re-read Dr Allen's books to see if my present experience level would cause me to find new meaning. (Micheal Allen's Guide to E-Learning and Creating Successful e-learning)
I give this book 2 stars because Clark Quinn does include some examples. I think that this book would have been far more worthwhile if it was written around these examples. I would have liked to see him explain an idea and then really delve into how he applied that idea in the examples he shows in the book. Instead the examples seem somewhat removed from what the author is primarily saying in each chapter.
good but very basic.......2007-03-14
a very basic overview fo the situation; does not include major players like BTS, SMG, Real Learning that are the worlds number 1 in simulation these days from invoicing and development of simulations.
Engaging what?.......2007-02-15
I have yet to finish this book; however, for the portions I have already read, I am not impressed. To begin, his expanded usage of the English language is unnecessary for the simplicity of his context. He also has multiple run on sentences that can be as long as 64 words! Also, "his" concepts are more or less variances of colorations of others theory's. The first half of the book is lofty, very wordy and lacking clear definitions. Perhaps this may be a test to see if I can Engage in learning.
Also to gain my credit I am a student of new media including Flash and have read multiple books based on learning through interactivity.
Hard Fun!.......2005-07-04
I will be brief. That's the way you feel when you're engaged in an eLearning Simulation Game. You get swept up in it. You're turned on. You block out life's static in order to reach your goal. Clark's book is like that. BUY THIS BOOK!
excellent.......2005-05-29
I've known and worked with Clark Quinn for several years. He's written a very good book. Like the e-learning it advocates, Engaging Learning is fun, accessible and, well, engaging. Working from a solid theoretical framework, Clark explains why learning should be "hard fun" and then shows how to create that kind of e-learning. He includes several detailed case studies. As someone who develops e-learning for a living, I appreciated his pragmatic approach and acknowledgement that e-learning can be developed at different levels of engagement, depending on budget, schedule, quality of source material, etc.
What really shines through, though, is Clark's passion for incorporating simulations and gaming techniques into e-learning. If you read this book and some of that rubs off, you will develop better e-learning.

Lots of circumstances conspired to make information technology what it is today. Business decisions (both wise and foolish), scientific discoveries (both old and recent), marketing campaigns (founded both in truth and otherwise), and plenty of random chance have played parts in defining the industrial, social, and cultural phenomena that personal and business computing have become. The Essential Guide to Computing: The Story of Information Technology tells the technical, commercial, and social stories behind the electronic computer and related technologies, such as telecommunications and software development. Along the way, author E. Garrison Walters reveals a lot of general knowledge about computers. This book is highly readable. It's essentially a general-interest nonfiction book, and a good one, at that.
As you read this book, you can't avoid picking up the little technical facts that have become part of our culture, particularly its younger parts. What's an embedded operating system? What's object-oriented programming? What is the open-source movement? Walters teaches you enough about these subjects--and the ways in which they fit together--to enable you to speak intelligently about them and perform further research, as your needs require. You'll enjoy this book, regardless of your level of computer expertise or your area of specialization, because you're sure to learn something and enjoy the process. --David Wall
Topics covered: The state of the art in electronic computing, data storage, and data communications, in a historical context. The operations of processors, memory chips, persistent storage devices (e.g., disks), and other hardware subsystems. Software development--including compression, encryption, and the challenges and promise of parallel computing--receives attention. Ditto for network communications infrastructures, protocols, and applications. It's all explained in detail and with style.
Customer Reviews:
Unbelievably Good.......2007-09-20
Walters' comprehensive knowledge of the world of IT and incredible ability to explain complex concepts make this book a fascinating read for any gadget geek interested in how stuff actually works. And he doesn't settle for simple, surface level explanations. Instead of shying away from the details and tech-speak, Walters takes you one step further than you thought you could ever go through insightful examples and meaningful analogies.
In addition, his ability to put technological developments in context allow the reader to see the larger factors and trends that have and continue to drive change. A seemingly chaotic and overwhelmingly fast-changing industry suddenly seems logical and "trackable" after reading Walters' book. In this way, it's easy to forgive the fact that the text is a bit out of date. Everything I've read about today's technology I've easily been able to connect back to the ideas I learned here.
Truly one of a kind.
Pretty cool book!.......2005-07-22
It is very cool book, I would say valuable book to build up your understanding of IT in general. It converges many technologies into one coherent pattern so you start to understand many things. I combined reading of this book with "UNIX Essentials" DVD and it nice to explore many of the conceptions in action. If you are lacking some evenness with your IT knowledge pick this one it is nicely shape your vision of it.
Great coverage of the IT field.......2002-12-07
There is a great breadth of information presented in a very lucid fashion. The material is easy to understand, and the author adds a great sense of humor.
However, with the rapid advancements in technology, the book is a bit dated. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a gain a great breadth of knowledge in the field of Information technology, in a short period of time.
Review from an Experienced Marketing Manager's Perspective.......2002-03-14
With 6+ years marketing management experience and an MBA, I feel this book was very helpful in understanding the many facets of technology and its evolution through time. The book is a must read for anyone who needs to build or brush up on a solid but basic understanding of technology. However, many of the newest trends in technology are only briefly covered. This is due, I believe, to the fact that many of the pervasive technologies and collaborative applications now being pushed in the marketplace didn't make the editor's draft of the book even though the published date is 2001.
A REMARKABLE FIND !.......2002-03-14
THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO COMPUTING is simply an extraordinary achievement. It reflects a breadth of knowledge and clarity of presentation that is remarkable. It makes every effort to distill knowledge about computers and computing in an easy, reader-friendly, memorable way. For computer users everywhere -- in organizations, schools, colleges and universities, and individuals -- this volume gives multiple ways of getting to know more about computing in its fast changing environment. First, you get to know the foundations of how computers and computing works in practical, everyday language. Second, you get a reference book that explains key terms, key workings, and key interconnections among the parts.
The most noteworthy aspect of the book is its superb coherence in presenting vast amounts of computing knowledge arranged in for easy understanding. Information and explanations in one chapter are referenced in subsequent ones, never failing to explain connections among them, with a view to present an overall picture of how computers and computing works.
Each chapter highlights technical terms related to computing and information technology, provides an overview of specific aspects as for example "An Overview of How Storage Works" (Chapter 2, p.40), and highlights in grey explanations of widely used terms such as "Disks From a User's Perspective" (p. 56). Each chapter also ends with a summary list of questions that focus on self-evaluating one's grasp of the chapter's contents.
E. Garrison Walters' book will continue to enrich the understanding of all who enjoy working with computers at work or for pleasure. I wish this book had been available to guide me in computing long before I found it, and, that I had written it ! It is a remarkable achievement!

Buying this book should deffinitely be one of your steps on your road to eBay success. One page at a time, I am getting there...only about a month with eBay selling and I, put up a store front, created my about me page, customized my settings for invoices and emails to customers, and made over $400 dollars in sales...not bad for a rookie just getting through the details. Customer Reviews:
A definitive handbook: both a text and a reference.......2002-12-19
Most marketers know that firms spend more on Sales Promotion than on mass media advertising, but text books don't tell you how to manage Sales Promotion. This book is everything it promises: The authors define classes of customers ("loyals", price switchers, etc) and then go through the cost benefit of Promotion techniques from coupons to free samples. If you want to know the difference between a contest and a sweepstake--and more importantly which one is better for your marketing situation--this book is for you. It explains "promotion to the trade" (it's more than free trips to Hawaii). The book is highly readable and attractively laid out. Thoroughly recommended.
Sales Promotion Essentials.......2001-03-08
Easy to follow basic business sense. A must read...
Useful bible for marketers.......2000-09-14
I've 2 version of this book, 1982 and 1997. Both of them are very helpful for my work. Schultz tells you not only "what" to do for Sales Promotion but also "why" to do. And that's very important for every business, even dot com. This book also collects many useful examples, if you want to launch a sales promotion next day, week or month, you can find out quickly what you can/should do.
