Book Description
Combines the theory and the practice of applied digital control
This book presents the theory and application of microcontroller based automatic control systems. Microcontrollers are single-chip computers which can be used to control real-time systems. Low-cost, single chip and easy to program, they have traditionally been programmed using the assembly language of the target processor. Recent developments in this field mean that it is now possible to program these devices using high-level languages such as BASIC, PASCAL, or C. As a result, very complex control algorithms can be developed and implemented on the microcontrollers.
Presenting a detailed treatment of how microcontrollers can be programmed and used in digital control applications, this book:
* Introduces the basic principles of the theory of digital control systems.
* Provides several working examples of real working mechanical, electrical and fluid systems.
* Covers the implementation of control algorithms using microcontrollers.
* Examines the advantages and disadvantages of various realization techniques.
* Describes the use of MATLAB in the analysis and design of control systems.
* Explains the sampling process, z-transforms, and the time response of discrete-time systems in detail.
Practising engineers in industry involved with the design and implementation of computer control systems will find Microcontroller Based Applied Digital Control an invaluable resource. In addition, researchers and students in control engineering and electrical engineering will find this book an excellent research tool.

What a Dandy Find!.......2006-08-13
This is an excellent book, IMO. I am not an experienced control systems engineer, so I can't say that the experienced control systems reader would (or would not for that matter) get allot out of the book, but I can say, it is a good introduction for those that have some background (e.g. An electrical engineer, out of college for several years, that took control systems at some point, and would like to learn how to implement, for example, PID controllers with Microcontrollers - that is my situation).
Ok, so what's in the book? The book starts out with an introduction into the classic blocks that make up a control system, and discusses how the microcontroller fits in. Part of the discussion focuses on why microcontrollers are needed, the requirements and sensors that are used.
The second chapter discussed how one models a system, mainly from a mechanical aspect but also from an electrical, electromechanical, and fluids aspect. This chapter combines theory with practical information that will be needed later in the book. There are some odd sign conventions, but none are too annoying. For example, Hooke's Law is F=-kx. The presentation of translational mechanical systems (springs, dashpots, and mass) the book presents a linear spring as F=ky. The illustration of a spring + dashpot + mass system where Newton's second law are applied make you think to get the signs correct.
Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are focused on introducing the Microchip PIC microcontroller; the PIC family, PIC architecture, programming the PIC in the C programming language (The author uses the Hi-Tech PICC Lite - a free download from Hi-Tech). Formal programming concepts including flow charts, structure charts, and pseudo code is discussed although the UML is not (seems like state charts would be nice but this is, after all, a book on control systems, not software engineering). If you already know the PIC, this chapter is a very quick read.
Chapter 6 discusses the z-transform in, in my opinion, an easy to comprehend fashion. The z-transform is paramount to the following chapters as the z-transform is the tool use in the digital domain. The discussion on the x-transform is somewhat terse. The reader should either be well versed in the s-domain and, perhaps, had prior exposure to the z-domain. The book is about applying the concepts, not teaching the concepts for the beginner.
Coupled with chapter 6 is a discussion in chapter 7 of system response in both the s and z-planes. These chapters combine more of the classic control system theory with digital sampling concepts.
What would any book on control systems be without system stability? That is the focus of chapter 8 where the classic tools are covered such as characteristic equations, Jury's stability test, Routh-Hurwitz Criterion, Root Locus, Nyquist Criterion, and Bode plots.
If you are like me and read a book from front to back, chapter 9 is where the reward of your patience is redeemed; the various types of controller designs (Dead-beat, Dahin, and PID). The chapter is not as comprehensive in coverage of controller architectures as say, Franklin, Powell, and Emami-Naeini, "Feedback of Dynamic Systems", but the being the focus of the book is applying the concepts to microcontrollers, you should be better prepared to expound your knowledge with such references.
Chapters 10 and 11 round out the discussion with controller realization and a practical case study; A liquid level digital control system.
In summary, I find this book well worth the money. The author has done a fine job in selecting topics, done a good job relating the material to microcontrollers, and writes in a clear, comprehensive manor. The book is focused on the PIC architecture. I recommend readers also download the PID application notes (there are two - AN937 and AN964 on Microchip's web site to supplement the material).
Well done Dogan Ibrahim!

Book Description
The presence of uncertainty in a system description has always been a critical issue in control. Moving on from earlier stochastic and robust control paradigms, the main objective of this book is to introduce the reader to the fundamentals of probabilistic methods in the analysis and design of uncertain systems. Using so-called "randomized algorithms", this emerging area of research guarantees a reduction in the computational complexity of classical robust control algorithms and in the conservativeness of methods like
H-infinity control.
Features:
• self-contained treatment explaining randomized algorithms from their genesis in the principles of probability theory to their use for robust analysis and controller synthesis;
• comprehensive treatment of sample generation, including consideration of the difficulties involved in obtaining independent and identically distributed samples;
• applications of randomized algorithms in congestion control of high-speed communications networks and the stability of quantized sampled-data systems.
Randomized Algorithms for Analysis and Control of Uncertain Systems will be of certain interest to control theorists concerned with robust and optimal control techniques and to all control engineers dealing with system uncertainties.
The present book is a very timely contribution to the literature. I have no hesitation in asserting that it will remain a widely cited reference work for many years.

A must read book for all IT Tycoon Wannabe.
A High Level Overview.......2001-04-26
This is a very high level view on the subject of HA, as previous reviewers state. It does present some basic guidlines at the system, network, and operational level which in my experience are so basic and intuitive, that I wonder why the author needs to state in "Special techniques for system realiability", that you should purchase from reputable supplies and even to recommend not to use shareware and freeware ? In general for a CEO or Manager who knows nothing on HA, this book is for you. This is a non technical brief, and its undenable shortcomings are its lack of coverage on recent hardware and software based clustering, cashing and load balansing technologies in the market now, specifcally related to e-commerce applications, middleware and CMS tools which now incorporate many HA features. Additionally, its lacks clear focus with hardly any case studies or real worl examples, and the primary examples of HA in the defintion of the author are client server related hardware technologies such as RAID, redundant NIC's and clustering examples.

Another building block in the Enterprise Computing Series.......2001-01-21
You cannot judge a book by its cover in most cases. This book's cover, however, subtly provides clues about what's inside. The picture is a panoramic view of Hong Kong taken from Victoria Peak. It accurately portrays the book, which is a high-level view of a wide number of topics related to high availability. If you are expecting nuts-and-bolts technical information, then you are better off purchasing Blueprints for High Availability. If you want a "how to" book that blends a specific technical approach with processes you should look at Mission Critical Systems Management. However, if you want a book that provides a clear set of processes, takes a business case approach, and touches on most of the issues associated with high availability, then this book is what you are looking for.
Like Hong Kong, where realities are in the eye and mind of the beholder, the book can be viewed as addressing either high availability or service level management. In fact, the book uses service level management as the driving force behind achieving high availability.
Included in the panoramic view of high availability are the many issues and factors that need to be understood in order to achieve high availability. It starts out with reasons why high availability is important, and quickly segues into factors, such as total cost of ownership (the treatment is pretty close to what GartnerGroup has been peddling since the early 90s). It does cause one to get back to basics and consider that a high availability solution has a lot of hidden costs.
The book goes through the process chain needed to develop a business case for high availability (one of the book's strong points, in my opinion), through implementation of the solution itself. If you are familiar with other books in this series you will recognize the pattern. Unlike the companion books, though, this one does not contain contradictions or have glaring gaps in the processes. The authors have thought this one through and have the writing skills to make it readable and understandable.
The treatment of service level management is highlighted by a chapter on user availability. If you are in IT you should read and take to heart this section. User availability is a key component of aligning IT to business. The complex and myraid political issues in Hong Kong sometimes seem trite compared to the political issues that surround aligning these two factions. The authors, like seasoned China watchers, provide insights about how to understand the seemingly inscrutable players and sage advice on hot to achieve consensus among the two opposing factions.
Another area that impressed me was the attention paid to facilities as a key component of high availability. Although this was a high level view, it can serve as a checklist of considerations as you are developing the business case for high availability. There was one missing fact that I wish the authors would have highlighted: compliance with fire and safety regulations and local building codes. I have seen cases where well designed solutions that were supported by excellent processes and sound management were compromised by failing a regulatory inspection. Imagine explaining to a CEO why the multimillion dollar investment in people, process and technology failed because an inspector shut down a mission critical data center because of a building code violation.
There is some token attention paid to the technology at the end of the book where high availability features are examined for specific products. Among the products covered are Windows 2000, Novell Netware, Solaris 8, AIX and OS/400. Also covered are various hardware platforms, such as S/390, AS/400, RS/6000 and Compaq Proliant server, and Oracle 8i availability features.
Bottom line: This book is about processes. It complements and augments Blueprints for High Avalability by wrapping a sound approach to making a case for, and implementing, high availability. It is also a great companion to Mission Critical Systems Management, again by providing complementary processes to the approach taken in that excellent book.
I wish the authors had summarized the issues and factors in an appendix of checklists, but other than that, this book is a solid addition to any service delivery library.

Book Description
There are many data communications titles covering design, installation, etc, but almost none that specifically focus on industrial networks, which are an essential part of the day-to-day work of industrial control systems engineers, and the main focus of an increasingly large group of network specialists.
The focus of this book makes it uniquely relevant to control engineers and network designers working in this area. The industrial application of networking is explored in terms of design, installation and troubleshooting, building the skills required to identify, prevent and fix common industrial data communications problems - both at the design stage and in the maintenance phase.
The focus of this book is 'outside the box'. The emphasis goes beyond typical communications issues and theory to provide the necessary toolkit of knowledge to solve industrial communications problems covering RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Ethernet and TCP/IP. The idea of the book is that in reading it you should be able to walk onto your plant, or facility, and troubleshoot and fix communications problems as quickly as possible. This book is the only title that addresses the nuts-and-bolts issues involved in design, installation and troubleshooting that are the day-to-day concern of engineers and network specialists working in industry.

Book Description
How do professionals plan and execute a public communications campaign? Moffitt provides a detailed step-by-step examination of the conceptualizing, planning, and execution of a public relations, marketing/advertising, political, or social issue campaign. She provides basic theories, concepts, and issues to understand before one can even begin to conduct a campaign, and she examines the research tools and skills needed to investigate the organization, the industry, or the targeted audiences for a campaign. Basic strategies for setting a campaign's goals and objectives are analyzed as are message strategies to determine the correct wording and visualization factors. Lastly, Moffitt examines communication selection strategies for choosing the appropriate personal and media channels for delivering the messages. Since the public campaign has emerged as a key model of organizational communication, professionals as well as students in advertising, marketing, and management will find the business end of the topic useful. Individuals involved with public relations, speech communication, broadcast and print media will benefit from the communication aspects.
Customer Reviews:
A Cure for Insomnia??.......2006-08-19
For someone who is a specialist in message design she sure had a time delivering hers. Long lengthy and way too technical. This book would be more suited for someone who doesn't mind a dry read or jargon.
Moffitt Delivers From Start to Finish in Campaign Strategies.......2003-07-19
In a work that will make public relations practitioners everywhere scream, "Why didn't I think of that," Dr. Moffitt applies a common sense approach to tackling campaign design and execution. Influenced by James Grunig, this book reaches conclusions that seem at first, too simple to true. However, through Moffitt's discussion, she explains the complex reasoning behind her solutions.
The book contains a fair amount of theory, a critical component of any serious discussion on campaign design. The theory, including the collapse model, the conceptualization model, and cognitive dissonance, forms the foundation of the campaign. If properly read and studied, this book will leave readers feeling confident in their campaign design and eager to meet the challenges of campaign execution.
5 stars for its clarity and for giving the subject due consideration, instead of trying to gloss over the subject with catch phrases and anecdotes.
Now I am waiting for Moffitt's next work, Communication Theories for Everyday Life with John R. Baldwin and Stephen D. Perry.
Extremely Boring!.......2002-07-05
In designing her message Moffitt lost my attention. This book is not only way too theoretical and impractical, worst of all it is absolutely boring. A nightmare to read. If you're looking for practical advice, look somewhere else.
If you're looking for tactical advice, keep looking..........2002-06-19
In fairness to the author, she is very clear in her preface who her target audience is: people working in the field of public relations or marketing who got there without formal training or education in the theory and practice of campaign management. The book serves that population very well. It provides a thorough and comprehensive, if academic, analysis of all the stages in creating and managing a campaign, and provides a solid foundation in the core building blocks of the discipline.
If, however, like me you are looking for a book that will provide hands-on, tactical advice on developing a communications campaign in a hurry and on a shoestring budget, you won't find much help here. I'm on my local school board, trying to develop a communications strategy to elicit community support for a large high school renovation project. Unfortunately, I found little in this book that I could translate into immediate strategy and tactics. I have a better understanding of the appropriate terminology used by campaign professionals, but I'm not any closer to putting a campaign - even an amateur one - of my own together.
Those looking for a deeper, theoretical grounding in campaign management should find this book worthwhile. Those looking for tactical, hands-on advice should keep looking.
A public relations classroom essential.......2000-03-29
I had this book in one of my classes in college and I believe that I learned the most from this book than any other class and/or book. Dr Moffitt has a very unique way of presenting ideas and cases. Dr. Moffit was my teacher actually and she did a very good job of presenting the information in such a way as to make you think about it in different ways before answering.

Customer Reviews:
Some big errors in the maths.......2007-10-24
This book has a few glaring errors in the introductory section on "Fourier Theory". Probably these don't affect the later chapters on power and noise, but nevertheless reduce the usefulness of the book as a comprehensive reference.
In case you are wondering about the errors, one of them is the 'proof' in section 2.8.5.1 that a delta function integrates to zero! One implication would be that the output of all linear systems is zero. That would simplify the world but is not terribly useful. There are a few other howlers that, together, indicate that the introductory sections in this book are best avoided.
Covering the gap between engineering and rigour.......2007-02-28
Power Spectral Density is widespread used in electronic engineering books as the Fourier Transform of correlation functions. However this definition seems rather mysterious and not very well connected with the intuitive idea of power, specially for stochastic processes.
This books gives the definitions, proofs and motivations behind Power Spectral Density. It rigorously establishes the bridge between "engineers intuitive concepts" and mathematical laid-down definitions.
Although it introduces Lebesgue and measure theory, the first chapters of the book are not intended to mathematicians, so it only deals with those fundamental results which will be needed further in the book. In following chapters one readily get a great insight into the concepts and connections between those split worlds of engineering and mathematics. The exposition is clear even in the case of stochastic processes, where the Power Spectral Density is clearly definded as a statistical average power.
For those engineers aware of the gaps and flaws of engineering books and who can't turn a blind eye to mathematics, this is a must have book.

Book Description
The textbook contains the records of a two-semester course on queueing theory, including an introduction to matrix-analytic methods. The course is directed to last year undergraduate and first year graduate students of applied probability and computer science, who have already completed an introduction to probability theory. Its purpose is to present material that is close enough to concrete queueing models and their applications, while providing a sound mathematical foundation for their analysis. A prominent part of the book will be devoted to matrix-analytic methods. This is a collection of approaches which extend the applicability of Markov renewal methods to queueing theory by introducing a finite number of auxiliary states. For the embedded Markov chains this leads to transition matrices in block form resembling the structure of classical models. Matrix-analytic methods have become quite popular in queueing theory during the last twenty years. The intention to include these in a students' introduction to queueing theory has been the main motivation for the authors to write the present book. Its aim is a presentation of the most important matrix-analytic concepts like phase-type distributions, Markovian arrival processes, the GI/PH/1 and BMAP/G/1 queues as well as QBDs and discrete time approaches.
Customer Reviews:
It is a good book.......2007-02-12
I haven't read the book. However, from its content I know it is a good book. It seems that everyone loves "Fundamentals of Queueing Theory". However, it has too many pages. 464 pages. I can not believe someone can finish it mostly unless he/she uses that book for textbook and has a weekly lecture about this book. Therefore, if you have good mathematical skill and plan to self-study queueing theory, this is the book for you.
