Knock 'em Dead.......2007-09-21
This book is a textbook used in my daughter's college class. I don't have particular opinions about the quality of the content, but I do know she was relieved to have the prompt delivery by the vendor.
A very satisfied reader!.......2007-09-15
I've read several books on job interviewing preparation, my favorite being Win 'Em Over! Get Hired!: Job Interviews That Produce Job Offers and this book, Knock 'Em Dead. Both authors (Martin Yate and Irv Jasinski) are experts in their field with heavy HR and consulting backgrounds in business and industry. Their approaches are similar but from different perspectives. Reading both, I feel I've gotten the best of both worlds. I owe the great job and salary offer I received to both gentlemen. Thanks fellas!
An indispensable resource for job-seekers.......2007-06-21
I'm a pretty intelligent guy, but I'm not a very effective speaker, so I have trouble selling myself. When faced with a personal question that I'm not expecting, I often find it difficult to compose an answer on the spot and deliver it without stumbling over my words, and without awkward pauses as I search for the best way to phrase something. I also don't have much experience with how the business world works. Hence, as recently as a few weeks ago, a job interview seemed like the stuff of nightmares.
Thankfully, I found this book. Its comprehensive advice is as useful as it is easy to understand, for every aspect of the job search. Knock 'em Dead answered my questions about how to identify the best job opportunities, how to craft my letters of introduction to catch an employer's interest, and most importantly, how to handle any interview situation smoothly and confidently. Within an amazingly short time, I got myself a better job than I would have believed possible for someone with my background, and at a better salary than I had hoped for.
Job interviews still make me nervous, but to be honest, it's the anticipation more than the actual process that bothers me now. Once the interview starts, I find myself actually quite comfortable, because I know that I've prepared thoroughly for whatever's coming. Even if you can't necessarily anticipate every last question an interviewer will hit you with, you can certainly come close, and the more prepared you are, the easier it is to deal with the few unknowns.
I don't doubt that I would have been tripped up several times in my job interviews had I not read this book first. With it, I was never unsure of myself, never came out of an interview thinking, "If only I had done this differently." I can't recommend it enough.
Outstanding Book.......2007-06-08
This is a Must Have. If you are in the market for a job or simply checking your marketability, I highly recommend this book. The ideas helped me a great deal and I got a job with the first company I interviewed with.
The ultimate job interview guide.......2007-05-09
About 16 years ago I quitted the first job after my graduation and needed to find a second one fast. Luckily I came across a copy of Knock em Dead in a public library. It really helped. I even (forgive me) photocopied the chapter on answering tough interview questions, which I had kept for years. Recently a friend of mine asked my opinion on how to handle job interviews. Within 24 hours I bought him this and of course, he found it very useful, too. I am obliged to praise it here and give it five stars, which I should have done it years before. In short, a must for any job seeker.
p.s. Below please find some questions with model answers in the book for your consideration.
What are the reasons for your success in this profession?
Why do you want to work here?
What did you like/dislike about your last job?
What is the least relevant job you have held?
How long would you stay with the company?
Describe a difficult problem you've had to dealt with?
How do you handle tension?
Do you have any questions?..........

2007 Potential Masters Student Doesn't Find This All That Helpful.......2007-09-11
At the time of this review, this books last revision was 10 years ago. Many things have changed in school's admission systems, and in other areas such as computer technology. That being said, a good bit of the book is completely outdated. Peters also chooses to focus HEAVILY on the areas that interest him, aka PHDs, Biology and English. If you aren't in interested in one of those 3 areas, you will find yourself skipping a lot of this book. As an Electrical Engineer interested in a MS degree, lots of the book were boring or skipped over. However, after all that ragging, I will say that the fundamentals of the book are strong. Advice on if you should consider grad school and steps to prepare for it are GENERALLY useful. However, I feel the book could updated and split into a PHD and Master's book that would better suit a wider audience.
Must have for any grad student.......2007-05-07
I absolutely loved this book. I got into 4 out of 5 of my choices because of this book. Yes, he is tough and the rhetoric does scare the reader, but the information he provides is real. You should be afraid and I think that fear is what helped me used his theories and suggestions so effectively. Academics are a difficult and frustrating career field so I'm glad he mentioned the downside of academic profession. The book traces everything: the application process, dissertation and thesis, and finally job search.
His essay section is great but I would still supplement his advice with an essay book. I found that when I wrote my essays they needed more direction than he provided. Also, his chapter on organization was a miss b/c he gave common sense advice, for example, he tells students how to organize their files and what type of organization materials are needed like Quicken. Many students have their own system that works for them and Quicken may not be apart of that. This section seemed a little dated.
I loved his inside look at academic politics b/c this is a large part of the learning experience. After spending a few months in my English program, I realized how important politics were among professors and department heads.
I think he provided wonderful hints, for example, before I graduated I researched major papers by the professors in my program. Even though this went a little overboard, I'm glad I did because it helped me see how my professors thought and what they believed in, deciding on classes became easier.
Should be required reading for anyone contemplating grad. school.......2007-03-28
This is the most useful book on the graduate school experience I have come across. One of my friends from college recommended it and I am so glad I bought it on Amazon! Peters does a thorough job of explaining the challenges of graduate student life while also offering helpful tips and pointers for overcoming these obstacles. I came away from this book knowing I wanted to go pursue graduate work, but having a much better sense of what kind of things to look for in a school. Now, when I talk about the grad. school admissions and thesis selection process to my friends who are currently in the thick of it, they wonder how I came to know so much about getting a Masters/PhD when I have yet to take the GRE!
The one criticism I have (as another reader alluded to) is that the technology section is VERY outdated. That is why I am giving this book four stars instead of five. A new edition is definitely in order. Aside from that chapter, the book is fantastic! Thank you Mr. Peters!
Honest Book.......2007-03-04
I have a bachelor's of science degree in Psychology, and I had every intention of going to graduate school for a Ph.D.
Until I read this book.
This book made me face some serious questions and real issues I wouldn't or couldn't face on my own. It makes some straight-forward points and tells the reader what to expect from Grad school.
The book also challenges the reader to ask him- or herself why he/she wants to go to grad school, and what he/she expects out of the experience. It also states what Grad school can give a student, but also what it cannot.
It tells you how to get in, how to stay in, the time it takes to complete a degree program, your odds of staying in, and your odds of finding a job in your field after you (finally) graduate.
"Getting What You Came For" is also certain to bring up the questions, "Is this what you really, really, truly want to do for the next X years?" and "Do you just like the look of 'Ph.D.' after your name?"
This book kept me from getting in and then dropping out of grad school. After reading it, I discovered I didn't want to go necessarily to become uber-educated, but because I wanted to be the authoritative source for ANY knowledge--and I liked the letters Ph.D.
A very expensive waste of time.......2006-11-15
The "updated" edition is incredibly outdated, especially the information on how to use technology to stay organized- I thought the entire purpose of a new edition was to add new information and resources! And then detailed instructions on how to use word processing software from 1988!! The rest of the book is mostly advice on how to kiss up to the faculty and how to make social contacts to advance your post-grad school career. This grad student was highly disappointed. Don't bother with this one.

Something for everyone in this book .......2007-10-05
This book would be perfect required reading for anyone who intends to work in a business after they leave school. For those of us much longer in the tooth than the author, we forget just how much newbies do not know about the business world. Her insights are honest, refreshing, often humorous and absolutely bang on. I can just imagine how fantastic an employee she became through this introspection. If you read it so it helps you guide new employees, or for your own growth, there is something for everyone in it. Organized, easy to read and quick.
Great book for looking at from the other angle............2007-09-06
Managers searching to work with GenY employees would greatly benefit from reading this book. Why? Because it helps them bridge the gap and understand how Gen Y thinks. GenY wants two things: They want to be productive, and they want to succeed. Some traditionalist and baby boomers have a hard time understanding why Gen Y needs tools like a Blackberry to be productive. GenY wants these tools because they grew up with them. This is the generation that grew up IM'ing, texting, e-mailing, etc. They are most productive with these types of tools, and will blow your minds with their accomplishments if you provide them with what they need. Gen Y wants to feel useful and productive - you need to challenge them and their abilities and give them room to prove themselves.
Great seller and credible .......2007-05-14

They Do Teach Corporate in College.......2007-04-11
I am a College Professor and I have been using "They Don't Teach Corporate in College" as a supplement to my "Supervisory Mangement" Class. Alexandra Levit is right on the mark with this book. The students have really enjoyed reading this book and have learned so much from it. I have incorporated this book into my class discussions and the students will be more prepared for the corporate world because of it!
not a bad book to read before graduation .......2007-01-24
The book is written well, easy to read and in parts provides a good summary of the strategies that one has to employ to get a spot under the Sun.

By far the best book available for job hunters.......2007-10-19
If I were to buy only one book on job hunting, it would be Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters by Jay Conrad Levinson and David Perry. The book gave me specific action items and HOW TO do them. After reading the book, I put away all thoughts of using outsiders to write or rewrite my resume and cover letters. I loved the unconventional methods and real world examples - they are the kind of food for thought that actually get your creative juices flowing. I look forward to waking up every day to use these ideas - job hunting is a job; this book added joy to the journey.
A real eye opener.......2007-10-17
Many books are point of view out on how to land a "dream" job, this one is the benchmark. This has real information on the inside track. In fact the book is based on recruiter's know-how.
There are a lot of books that promise many things, this book delivers. Tips and tricks ... there is no slight of hand, the book is full of information that will get job hunters noticed and employers to take notice.
The information is strait forward concise with examples, it's an easy read and a real eye opener. This book should be handed out to all graduating classes along with their diploma...
This is great stuff!

Thorough, but very U.S.-centric.......2007-07-14
Very thorough, touches every aspect of the job hunt. Not sure how much of the tips are really "guerrilla marketing" though. It's very up to date and the author understands the importance of the online world very well which is great. My big complaint is that it's very U.S.-centric, many of these tactics would be damaging instead of useful in other parts of the world.
Very Useful for Thinking Outside Box.......2007-06-18
I found this book extremely useful. It gave me great ideas for networking and provided some excellent examples of how to think outside the box in regard to getting your name and resume to the top of the list. I would highly recommend it.
Great book for..........2007-05-31
people with lots of experience. If you are not a shining star with 10 years of track record - this book is not for you. You will need to extrapolate to fit your situation.

somewhat helpful in organizing my search efforts.......2007-10-02
this book didn't say anything new that you can't find elsewhere or on the internet. but it surely saves me a lot of trouble googling by putting everything together.
Nice Overview... but there are better books out there.......2007-07-06
When I checked out this book, I was expecting some innovative method that would drastically change my approach to the job search. Instead, what I read was repackaged information that you could find on the Internet. Instead, I would recommend 10 Insider Secrets to a Winning Job Search: Everything You Need to Get the Job You Want in 24 Hours - Or Less. I found that book to be a more concise and thought provoking tool that helped me succeed in getting my most recent job as a Regional Sales Director.
Great Job Search Book.......2007-06-13
I have to tell you this book is outstanding. It was both very informative and entertaining. Searching for a job is never fun. And if you're fortunate, you'll never have to search for many jobs in your life. If you're not experienced at looking for work, the search process can be arduous at best. This book provides a structure/methodology by which to conduct a highly effective job search and helps ease the "pain" of looking for work. I would recommend it to anyone from a new college grad to an experienced executive.
At last....a book that "understands".......2007-02-05
As I read through the Pierson method I was so happy to see a job search method that combines an excellent description of the realities of a job search with a true understanding of the job seeker. Readers will come to know why they balk at the idea of a cold call and spend many hours surfing the internet. And they will also gain confidence in themselves, along with a system that works.
Pierson knows the job search trail and he knows what it's like to look for a job. Bravo for this wonderful book.

Focus, Structure, Accountability.......2006-10-19
The hardest part of a job search, at least for me, is treating the search itself like a job. Pierson provides structure and methodology to your search but also, and importantly, accountability to yourself through the use of a progress chart. He offers a common sense, step by step process that helps you create an effective marketing plan for yourself along with the not inconsequential side effect of a boost in self confidence.

Generalized but included good ideas.......2007-05-12
This book gives hints and advice for any type of federal job applicant. If you're seeking information specific to an agency, you will NOT find it here. However, this book has outstanding sample interview questions- I would have never thought of them but can see them asked in any interview. Also, there are about 15 different resume formats with tips on information that federal resumes require that you would never list on a private sector resume. All in all, this book was helpful in creating a great federal resume and preparation for general interview questions. Again, don't count on it for specific agency information.
If you want to work in the federal government, you must read this book!.......2007-03-19
Having read several books on how to gain employment in the federal sector, Kathryn Troutman has been able to succinctly explain how to position yourself for success in seeking a civil service opportunity. She shares her vast knowlege of the federal hiring process in a way that is easy to understand as well as implement. By investing the time in reading this book, you will have taken the first, probably most important step, toward being granted an interview for a federal opportunity!
Extremely Helpful in Preparing for an Interview.......2007-03-02
As a private sector executive with no Federal employment experience, I needed some insight into the hiring process. After securing an interview for a high level position, I used the "10 Steps" book to acquire an insiders perspective. Especially helpful was understanding how creating a "KSA" (knowledge, skills and achievements) document is important in presenting credentials in a way the Federal Government prefers.
Terrific Reference for Every Job Seeker.......2006-06-17
Kathryn -
You may have read so many times before, but your book "Ten Steps to a Federal Job" is a terrific reference for those in need of preparing the ultimate "Proper Resume"... even though it is geared towards the Federal Job Seeker, I used the format to prepare my Private Sector Resume, Job Qualifications Statements (aka KSAs), and cover letter... my new employer (an Engineering Office with clients to the likes of the Army Corps of Engineers and the US Navy) did not need to interview me more than once ... he had everything he needed sitting in one neat and tidy package in front of him during my one and only interview: and I got the job! I will recommend this book to anyone who desires to scribe a real resume!
Thanks again for the book!

If you want a federal job, get this book!.......2006-06-08
I recently completed my master's at a DC area school. I have spent the past year applying for federal jobs. I started off with the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) Program application. Despite a stellar resume by any standard, I was rejected in the first round. I think my lack of understanding of the KSA was the death knell for my PMF application. Although the PMF application does not refer to its required essays as KSA's, that is certainly what they are. If I had had this book before applying for the PMF, I am sure I would have made it to the next stage. And I encourage all PMF applicants to pick up a copy. It will give you an advantage over your competition.
After losing out in the first round of the PMF competition, I was pretty discouraged to say the least. The faculty at my school had driven home the fact that the best way into the federal government for a recent master's recipient was through the PMF program. Since this was no longer an option for me, I set out to find alternate ways into the federal government. I began by filling out applications for any and all positions on usajobs that interested me. However, I was never invited to an interview. I realized I was doing something wrong and did my research and found this wonderful book.
What I learned from this book is that the KSA(s) makes or breaks an application. I truly believe that it is more important than any other step in the application process, including the interview. If you don't know how to write a KSA, you will not get a federal job. Hence, the importance of this book. It clearly explaines the federal job application process. It starts with the basics, so newbies to the federal process understand exactly what to expect. The book provides brief examples of what a federal resume should look like. Finally, it breaksdown the KSA and explains exactly what it should look like. The book even gives sample KSA's so you can model yours around it. I found this extemely helpful.
So did this book work for me? Indeed it did. After reading the book, I applied its principles to an application with a federal agency. It was a position I really wanted, and I spent a great deal of time refining my KSAs. And six months later, I was called for an interview. A month after that I got a conditional offer of employment. I am now awaiting the completion of my background check. If all goes well, I will begin working for the federal government very soon. I feel that I owe a lot to this book. Without it, I would probably still be going around and around on the federal government application wheel.

Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25
This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.
Good Value.......2002-07-17
I found the book to be very helpful. It had some useful tips and sample resumes and cover letters. One of the best books of its type I've ever seen
Boring and a waste of time!.......2000-04-25
I bought this book based on all of the favorable review's and was greatly disappointed. As a recent college graduate in the humanities, I found it to be a big waste of time and money! If you are not interested in finding a job, buy this book!

This is another example of hearing "the same ole stuff." Can't some author get origional? This was so elementary and certainly not "NEW" information, as the title suggests.
Outstanding insights from a former top assistant!.......2004-07-01
This book has helped so many people! It's perfectly brilliant.
I think it's insane that reviewers are commenting on publisher's type-o's instead of commenting on how significant this book really is. Obviously, Ms. Duncan proofed her own book and after meeting Ms. Duncan at an event, I mentioned the reviews about the errors in the book. Ms. Duncan and her staff has tried desperately for years to demand that the book be reprinted. Some things unfortunately are out of one's hands, and I recognize this after years of being a journalist. Look at the NY Times! And every other book on your shelf! They all have errors!
Ms. Duncan has been instrumental in the salary increases, and gaining recognition for this truly unique role! I recommend this book to anyone in the role or considering it!
Interesting Read.......2000-07-19
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Duncan's book. I found it an easy read, packed with lots of excellent information.
As with the other reviewer I was extremely disappointed in the skills test in the back of the book. Missing questions, answers to questions that weren't printed.
I wonder if Ms. Duncan has read her own book? Did she review the skills test information in the back before it was published? If the fault lies with the publisher, I hope she got her money back. I also hope she'll do a re-print with the skill test corrected because I found it very helpful in identifying weak areas in my own skill set.
I've been an Executive Secretary/Assistant for the past ten years. Often a good assistant is taken for granted. I appreciated Ms. Duncan's affirmation that my job is more than a job, it's a career and that not just anyone can be a good assistant.
If you can get past all the problems with the skill test in the back of the book, I think you'll find the content extremely interesting, insightful, and motivating.
Talk About Ironic!.......2000-05-11
I just finished reading this book about the "new executive assistant". Of course it emphasizes attention to detail, checking your work, accuracy, etc. Upon completing the extensive skills test in the back of book, I was horrified to find the following blatant errors: 1. In the vocabulary section, the questions skip from #56 to #61, yet in the answer section, these questions do appear. 2. The proofreading section fails to point out periods that are missing at the end of two sentences. Here's the kicker: 3. When I went to check my answers for the spelling section, I discovered that there were only two answers out of 110 questions. To top, there were answers for #110 - 122, which didn't exist in the first place.
OK, can anyone find a proofreader at McGraw Hill to catch these types of errors? How can anyone take this book seriously? The other person who reviewed this book obviously did not read the whole thing. What a disappointment! I do recommend another book that I read. It's called The Valuable Office Professional by Michelle Burke. She is right on the money. There are some more in-depth self-evaluation tests, which go much further than vocabulary and grammar skills. I also got some information about her consulting service, which I am trying to convince management our company needs. That's my summary of this book. Good luck with your administrative careers no matter who you are or where you live!
Ms. Duncan has written a mentoring masterpiece!.......1999-02-06
"The New Executive Assistant" is a must-read for aspiring or seasoned executive assistants, their bosses, and everyone in between.
Ms. Duncan doesn't just advise you to develop a proactive rather than a reactive approach to your administrative career, she guides you to discovering both what you want out of life and what your career can provide. She covers all the important bases for surviving in today's fast-paced world: learning to adapt to change (technical and cultural); mastering the fundamentals of communicating what you really mean; tapping into your management and leadership potential; handling both yourself and others in conflict situations; promoting yourself, your boss, and your company; and regaining your spiritual "center". Most importantly, however, Ms. Duncan asks wether or not you are cut out to be an executive assistant. Life is too short to just have a job; whatever it may be, find a career that works for you, challenges you, and fits your personality.
Packed with objective insights, advice, and enjoyable witticisms, "The New Executive Assistant" delivers. I found in this one book what countless seminars and 50-minute training series have not been able to provide; I found truely usable, relevant insights and information. Ms. Duncan has created a mentoring master piece for executive assistants (and anyone who wants to understand them)!

Great Intro to the experience of law school.......2006-04-19
I found this book an excellent introduction to what the experience of law school would be like-- from one student's perspective. It didn't have a great deal of practical advice on how to brief cases or outline classes, but it did provide me with a better sense of what to expect from the whole 3+ year process. For practical advice on briefing cases and studying suggestions, I found Law School Confidential much more useful. However, I think the two books complement each other. I enjoyed reading this book, and suspect I will reread sections as I move through law school.
The Best Book About Law School!!!.......2004-01-19
As a prospective law school applicant, who will be applying to a Juris Doctor program this year, I read a lot of books about law schools. Law School Insider by Jeremy Horwitz, Esq. (a cum laude graduate of Cornell Law School, who is currently working as an attorney) is by far the best book about a student's life before, during, and after law school. Unlike other books, this book is organized in a straight-forward manner and is well-written. It starts from the Introduction and Preparing for Law School Chapters that guide you through the entire admission process, from selecting a good law school to making educated choices after receiving acceptance letters. Thereafter, the author writes about the first year, memorable first-year summers, two-L, journal elections and intrigue, second-year summers, the third and final year, and the Bar exam. In addition, the book is supplemented by useful Tables on the first-year course schedules across the nation; modern law-related career options and elective specializations; state Bar exam subject matter coverage and MPRE requirements, to name a few. Various Appendixes include the sample writing completion submission and sample class outline excerpts.
Throughout the book, Jeremy offers a lot of valuable details about his personal experience as a law student in Cornell Law School. For example, he writes that his "...own first day of classes was only modestly intimidating. The readings had taken a long time, but were short enough that I though that I generally understood where they were going. Most of my professors initially came across as nice enough people, and the first class discussions about the readings were relatively gentle..." I found this to be similar to my own law school classes. In other chapters, he describes his experience of hunting for a job and compares different areas of practice and cities. No doubt, such details are extremely important. A few persons who posted their negative reviews about this book should have known that God is in details.
It is no secret that, due to the economic and other related factors, admission to any law school in the country (not to mention top law schools) has become extremely competitive during the recent years. LSAC offers the following nationwide statistics:
Law School Applications (Entering Class of Fall 2002)
89,000 applicants submitted over 440,000 applications. Average of approximately 5.3 applications per person; 17.4% increase in applications.
LSAT Test Takers (Entering class for Fall 2003)
June 2002 LSAT: Largest June exam in history. 27,808 prospective applicants took the exam; 16.3% increase from June 2001 exam.
October 2002: 52,604 persons took this exam; 12.5% increase over October 2001.
The bad news is, of course, that the competition to get into the law school of your choice is going to get even much tougher. But the good news is that after reading Law School Insider your chances of admission to your dream school will increase significantly. I strongly believe that this book is a must for any prospective law student. It is worth every penny, and I highly recommend it to anyone considering going to law school. Also, the Internet website created by Jeremy Horwitz, www.lawschoolinsider.com, is an excellent source for obtaining additional information about the complicated law school admission process, as well as for finding answers to your questions.
A short note about myself: I hold my first law degree from one of the best law schools in Europe, and an advanced Master of Laws degree from American law school (I wish I had read this book before I was applying to the LL.M. program!)
My favorite assigned pre-law book.......2003-11-24
I can see why this book was assigned reading for one of my college classes, it has been very helpful (and easy to read) in explaining what law school is really about, the careers I can pursue, and telling me what I need to do to prepare. Most of my books get sold at the end of the semester, but because this has so much information on how the first, second and third years of law school work (still 2 years away for me), I will keep this when I dump my other books. I have also found the web site (with free updates and discussion forums) for this book to be major bonuses.
BTW, it's funny to see how the "critics" behind the 1-star reviews here disagree about such ridiculous things. Is this book "mature"? "Humble?" Everyone who loves the book knows that it is both of these things, but even the "critics" can't seem to agree, probably because the "critics" are really jealous competing authors trying to take whatever shots they can to make people doubt a great book. Look past the 1-star smears and get this 5-star book!!
Thumb through at a bookstore first - you may save some $.......2003-11-22
I can't see why this book received such high marks from other readers. I found the author's perspective to be immature (e.g. bragging about parties), narrow (almost completely his own), and too general to be helpful.
The book would have been much improved if it was written several years after law school when the author had some career experience to reflect upon what he could have done better if he could do it over again. Instead it appears to have been published almost immediately after his graduation.
The book also could have been improved if multiple authors narrated their experiences. Instead, the book almost completely focuses on his. Thus, you're better off talking to some friends who have gone to law school, so that you can obtain multiple perspectives, than reading this book.
Finally, the book could have been improved with more facts. Such factual references would have been the appropriate way to utilize footnotes. Moreover, it would have given some legitimacy to his claims and advice. The appendices are one of the few places you can find useful facts, but they are too brief to justify the purchase.
My advice is to page through this book in-person first. It is nearly the equivalent of a self-published biography. It is not a useful guide to understanding law school. An undergraduate student may be fooled into thinking so, but anyone with a few years of career experience can see it for what it is. Just skim a few of its pages and the nearly useless footnotes (which yes he says you can skip at the beginning of the book) to save yourself some time and money better spent on other guides.
p.s. Contrary to another reviewer's speculation, I am not a competing author. I am an administrative code writer considering a career transition by going back to law school. If you are someone who could probably be defined as a non-trad student, I think you will share my opinion of this book.
Number One on My List of 3 Must-Have Books.......2003-09-23
A little about me: I'm now in my second year of law school and Purchased both Law School Insider and Law School Confidential last year. I wound up keeping only my copy of Law School Insider, which is a newer and more relevant book for me.
Now that I've completed my first year, I think that there are three books that every law student should read before (and maybe during) attending law school. The first two are Law School Insider and Getting to Maybe. Getting to Maybe is a good book on exams, and Law School Insider is the best book about the experience and how to prepare.
A little about law school: law school is a challenging LEARNING experience. If you want to be a lawyer, you go to law school to learn how to think, how to read, and how to manage your time. It is not just about getting good grades, it is about picking an area of personal specialization and actually learning. Only Law School Insider speaks to both the importance of grades and truly learning a specialty.
Besides the fact that Law School Insider is much more thorough, it is also a mature person's look at law school. Law School Confidential is peppered with exclamation marks (to make it seem more exciting!), formulas, way too many cocky, overconfident male perspectives, and handfuls of comments from all-white "mentors." I recognized these as gimmicks when I saw them but only realized how wrong and useless they were for me when I tried some of them.
By comparison, Law School Insider is a balanced book that actually speaks to the lifestyles and choices of different readers, including people who are married and worried about starting a life after law school, and tells people from diverse backgrounds how to maximize their chances of success. It has the most useful information, with none of Confidential's attitude. You can see that same attitude in the few absurdly negative reviews of Insider, but ignore it, it's just more Confidential hype without any substance.
On the subject of attitude, there is not a trace of arrogance or artificial stress anywhere in Insider. This contrasts sharply with Confidential, which suggests among other things that you should skip applying to law schools unless you're going to go someplace Robert Miller and his friends consider prestigious, and that law school is going to be like a war. Miller and I were both educated in Pennsylvania, but I know this stuff isn't even true at most of the schools in my state, let alone elsewhere in the country.
So what is the third book I would recommend if not Confidential? One-L. Confidential's perspective on law school is old and outdated too, but One-L is much more entertaining if you're buying a book about law School to be entertained. If you're looking to learn about law school life, you owe it to yourself to buy Law School Insider instead.
