Product Description

The Whens, Whys and Hows of Expressing Terms of Endearment It has been said, Words can bewitch the soul. Effectively used in the modern love letter, words can work to the advantage of all those who seek ever lasting happiness. Love letters have power: the power to sustain good relationships and move them forward, the power to improve failing ones and make them better even the power to save those in serious trouble. In How to Write a Love Letter That Works, the authors express their belief that a return to what worked in the past is not old-fashioned as long as it is updated to account for modern times and trends. The fifty chapters, each of them devoted to a different situation in which a love letter can and should be used, is divided into four sections: His Feelings, His Letter, Her Feelings, and Her Letter. The feelings sections gives the reader insight into their own motivations and allows them to examine the problem from the other person s point of view. Each of the letters, beautifully and effectively crafted, offers readers the opportunity to borrow selectively ideas or language, filter them through the prism of their own personalities, and create their own love letters that work. Selected chapters: When Friendship Turns to Love Letter to an old flame: Do you remember when...? We re going to slow We re going to fast Goodbye for now Ending an affair The three-dimensional love letter ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Sidney Berstein has enjoyed a distinguished career as a lawyer, legal author, and popular lecturer. 5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!.......1999-10-26

I love this book! sometimes through the ART of writing love letters can relationships really prosper and move on to another level. After reading this book and apply some of the techniques you learn, you'll soon realize that your relationship with that special someone will soar at an unstoppable rate! it's fantastic..cuz it worked for me

5 out of 5 stars This is a very good book!.......1999-07-17

I had tried for close to two years to convince Sandy to marry me. We had a great time together, but she had lingering doubts. One of my college roommates, who was well aware of my situtation (since it was all I talked about) bought me this book -- I think as a joke. It was no joke. I read the whole book in a weekend, and much of it twice. I did not copy any of the well-written letters, but it helped me to express MY OWN feelings in a way I could not otherwise have done. The letter I wrote -- which I titled "I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy" worked. Last month, Sandy and I were married in St. Barts. This book deserves a lot of the credit for our happiness. It may not have the same profound effect on you that it did on Sandy and me, but I assure you that this wonderful book will help you to express the world's most important emotion -- true love!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST THING WRITTEN ON TRUE LOVE AND HOW TO EXPRESS IT.......1999-04-06

This is the book for those of us who want to express our love, but are not always sure how to do so. The love letter is a lost art. We tend to be too self-conscious to express our true feelings in writing. We would rather communicate orally or by email or voice mail -- just so our thoughts and feelings will not be recorded in a permanent way. But this is unfortunate, because those who we love deserve the great joy of receiving a written expression of our feelings -- one that will truly make an impression and will survive even when we are gone. This wonderful book may bring back the lost art of the love letter. It provides real world advice for many situations, and sample letters. It will open up your mind, help you identify your feelings, and give you ideas of how to express them articulately and meaningfully. Another great thing about this book is that it is not limited to the love between spouses, significant others, etc. -- it addresses all kinds of love. You can write a love letter to a child, a parent, a teacher, a friend, someone you would like to get to know better (or even someone you would like to break-up with tactfully). These letters are not often written, but they should be! Why not express your feelings -- especially if, with a little help from the authors, you can do so eloquently. The advice is simple and easy to follow, and the sample letters are beautifully written. And because the authors are a male-female team, people of either gender will find ideas they can relate to. This is one of the relatively few books that could truly change your life (and the lives of the recipients of your letters!). One reader's advice: buy a copy (before next Valentine's Day!)

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!!.......1999-01-01

Aside from being poorly written, this book had very little information that really would be helpful. The authors seemed to think by stating the obvious, they were somehow instructing the reader in the art of writing love letters. Most people already know what they want to say; the problem lies in how to form their thoughts and ideas into a coherent and romantic letter. This book is offers no real help in this area.

Aside from the above problems, the final reason which made me return this book, is that the authors tried to instruct the reader on how to write a letter to someone you'd like to have an affair with. I found this not only evidence of poor judgement on their part, but quite repugnant.

Rarely does a day go by when most of us do not have to deal with surly salespeople, cheaply made products, or vast and indifferent bureaucracies. Most of us endure this with a stoicism worthy of Seneca himself. After all, what's the use of complaining? It all seems to fall on deaf ears, anyway.

But the world needn't be like this, according to Ellen Phillips, consumer consultant and founder of Ellen's Poison Pen, Inc. Since 1988, Phillips has been helping frustrated consumers to get refunds and apologies from everyone from the corner druggist to massive insurance agencies. In her book, Shocked, Appalled, and Dismayed!, Phillips shares the secrets of writing letters of complaint that get results. The first few chapters cover the general dos and don'ts of writing effective letters of complaint (remain calm, use polite language), along with useful advice from legal experts (don't embellish, stick to the facts).

The chapters that follow target specific problems we all face at some time in our lives, ranging from getting bumped from a flight to the secrets of successfully dealing with your HMO. Each chapter contains bullet points, illustrative anecdotes, and a number of example letters, most of which were based on actual letters sent on behalf of Phillips's clients. On top of all this, Phillips also provides an appendix listing the names and addresses of over 600 major companies, government agencies, and consumer organizations. Phillips believes that we should get what we pay for, and after reading her book, you'll be able to stand up for your rights with confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Every Amazon.com customer needs to get this book!.......2004-03-18

Anyone who has made enough transactions with Amazon.com can tell you, Amazon.com has its share of foul-ups. And when mistakes (that are bound to happen from time-to-time) do happen, the biggest errors occur in their customer service department. For me, I know that I have written e-mail after e-mail complaining about RUDE, ERRONEOUS and downright FRAUDULENT communication emanating from the unskilled and unsupervised excuse for a customer service department only to have other unskilled, unsupervised hacks respond. I kept explaining that I was not seeking compensation, I was trying to complain about Amazon.com's customer service, but Amazon.com either doesn't care or doesn't have a mechanism to care. My e-mails which always started, please forward this to so-and-so's supervisor never were. I can't wait for the follow-up to this book. You may only need this book on occassion, but when you do you will be very glad you have it. It proved indespensible for me recently!

3 out of 5 stars Common sense information.......2002-12-10

This book is great if you have no idea how to write a complaint letter. However, most of us have common sense, and know how to express that we are "shocked, appalled, and dismayed"! Also, this book discourages the use of certain words and phrases for no other reason than that the author doesn't like them, or thinks they are overused. This book does provide some useful information on how to contact people you may want to send a complaint letter to, but this information can easily be found on the web (for free).

3 out of 5 stars Good for letter practice.......2006-03-21

I purchased this book to help with letter practice and recognition. Most of the letters had great words associated with them, like "s" is for snake and "f" is for flag, other however were not so great, "e" is a comb and the word association amoungst these letters did not help at all.

After the students learn the letters, there is a word practice section and I was surprised to see that many of the words were names of people, Owen, Quinn, Peter, Paul, (this is in the capital letters sections.) The lower case word practice however was right on target.

4 out of 5 stars great for preschool teachers.......2005-09-23

This book with reproducable letter pages for your classroom is helping my Pre-K children begin with a better foundation for school next year than my previous letter pages had. But while the way in which the letters are introduced, they are grouped by pencil stroke, which, while better than introducing in alphabetical order, means that the lower-case and capitla letters aren't introduced together. I suggest using the order suggested by the "Between the Lions" educational consultant: m s t p f n a o d k l u b g r i z c h w y qu x e (lower case before upper case.) Whatever you do, do not use the "Obvious Letters" CD; it is educationally unsound.

5 out of 5 stars Look, Write and Rememer: Letter Formation Pages.......2002-12-18

This book has helped my entire first grade classroom to improve their printing skills. The easier letters (composed of vertical and horizontal lines)are grouped together and presented first followed by the more challenging letters (circular and diagonal lines). What a great concept!

This book allows my students to be successful "early on" which boosts their self-esteem and increases their willingness to print. Thanks so much.

5 out of 5 stars Find this book for your young reader. It's brilliant........2004-09-30

I picked up this little gem at a church book sale. I think it cost a mere 50 cents. But OH! it is worth so much more. The book is divided into sections where students write letters to renowned authors indicating how his or her book inspired or changed their lives. The entries include a series of heartbreaking stories and conditions by children suffering from extreme illness or as victims of crime to children dealing with divorce and/or the angst of youth. Other letters are sweet and innocent in spirit very simply tell the author what they liked about his/her book and write things like: "How the heck are you?" and "How do you like living in California?"

The letters are beautifully written--very pure in spirit and in message. One, a letter to author Toni Morrison written by a 15-year-old from Miami, FL was particularly poetic and thought provoking. And another letter by Brandi Hayes, 13, and suffering with Cystic Fibrosis, thanked the parents of Robyn Miller, the authors of "Robyn's Book: A True Diary," and asserted her resolve in fighting the disease. It brought tears to my eyes.

This book provides a brilliant reading list for young readers. I highly recommend it and intend to pass on to my fourth grader.

4 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Young Readers.......2000-04-11

This book is a very special collection of letters that are inspiring, funny, and touching. Great for reluctant young readers and avid kids as well - they will love reading the words of other young readers!
