The Holy Grail for Federal Job Seekers !.......2007-10-11
Consider the "Federal Resume Guidebook, Fourth Edition," as the bible for serious federal job seekers. A few months ago I attended a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class before I retired from the Air Force. The TAP instructor lightly covered federal resumes, KSA's, etc., I was totally confused. Family, friends, and former co-workers all provided me with advice on how a federal resume should be written, formatted, and distributed. After several misses on the job market I decided to purchase this book. HALLELUJAH ! This book will take you step-by-step on the federal resume process with some excellent federal resume samples you can use on your quest for a career with government agencies. I also decided to invest in the Entry-Level and Mid-Level Assessment Service offered by the authors company, The Resume Place. If your are serious about your federal job search I strongly suggest you purchase this service. You will not be disappointed. One last item, the author Ms. Kathryn Troutman personally provided me with the assessment and offered some great suggestions I had overlooked when I created my resume. WoW, what great customer service. This book certainly deserves a "Five Stars" plus rating. I'm certain I will catch the attention of the federal agencies where I want to work.
An indispensable and invaluable reference guide.......2007-10-07

Job seekers are provided with an illustrative wealth of federal resume samples, detailed procedures, and tips. Of special note is Troutman's advice for those transitioning from military service to a federal career, and for those transitioning from Wage Grade to General Schedule positions. With instruction on preparing for the new Behavioral Interview process and strategies for advancing a federal career, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" continues to be an indispensable and invaluable reference guide for job seekers regardless of the federal position being sought after. Simply stated, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" is essential for anyone seeking federal employment and is a fundamentally necessary addition to personal, professional, academic, governmental job center, and community library Jobs/Careers reference collections.
Good but we'll see.........2007-07-04
I found this the to be the best book on the federal application process yet. The examples were detailed as well as the explainations with plenty of examples for the professional GS jobs. As far as it's effectiveness... we'll see.
Great book.......2007-05-31
I just wanted to say I got more reaction from the new improved Fed Resume. However, I also changed my regular business resume also and got a job in the regular business world first before the Federal employment world. I do think it works and when I am done with my education, I plan on continuing using this method.
Write a Winning Resume.......2007-05-24
I purchased the book and what a difference it made in creating a resume with some pop. The chapters were easy to follow step by step. It really helped me transform my resume into something worth reading. Also the comments in each chapter were very helpful in bringing to light the many hats I wear at my current job and I was able to translate that knowledge into the qualifications described in the job announcements. It is well worth the investment. If you are truly serious about getting a job with the federal government, then this book is a must.
Book Description
An informative and up-to-date resource for job seekers who are looking for solid direction from Fortune 500 executives. War, recession, and political uncertainty have forced many corporations to regroup, and downsizing has been the dreaded outcome for millions of workers. Fired and laid-off employees are swelling the ranks of job seekers and creating stiff competition for a dwindling number of positions. In this harsh business climate, many applicants are finding that just getting in the door for an interview poses an enormous challenge.
So what's happening on the other side of the desk-as employers review huge piles of prospective resumes? What catches their attention? What turns them off? Author Brenda Greene surveyed 50 Fortune 500 employers to find out and gained valuable insight into just what it takes to command attention and interest in a crowded field. Packed with sample resumes and cover letters that represent what hiring managers, directors, and vice presidents want to see, Get the Interview Every Time shows and tells what's expected versus what's rejected.

• Research the company and its opportunities before sending any resumes.

More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books.......2007-10-05
This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.
The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.
Excellent Resource.......2007-01-04
This book was very helpful. It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes. Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other. That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.
Excellent Resource.......2006-03-14
This book was very well done. There are many sample resumes in the back and also sample cover letters. The content of the book explained what to put on your resume and cover letter and what employers are looking for. This is a great resource for anyone looking for some guidance on how to develop their resume and cover letter.
Excellent Layout.......2006-02-25
Excellent presentation of the material in an easy to follow format. Allows the reader to pinpoint exact areas of interest, and contains only information pertainent to the title.
A must have for writing resumes with confidence and skill.
Incredible Resource.......2005-09-14
I highly recommend this book for people who want a complete approach to finding a new job. The author took the time to interview tons of HR people at top-notch companies and share valuable insights with the reader.

Direct and Excellent.......2006-07-25
I've read through this book and applied the lessons in it to develop various resumes for the jobs I've applied to with good results. The before and after of my resume shows an amazing difference, as well as my approach to applying to jobs and interviewing for them. It is all about gearing your presentation to the job at hand, and this also applies to the interview process. e.g. I was offered a math faculty chair position at a local community college, gotten interviews for excellent jobs, etc. Right now I'm happy with my current gig until I continue my education. I recommend its no-nonsense approach.
The book a Technical Recruiter uses to write his own resume.......2003-03-06
I use this book when updating my own resume and when revising the resumes of others. I looked through a bunch of similar books and selected this one.
I'm ordering more copies. I gave my last one to my wife for an assistant who'd been helpful to her but was being laid off. Using this book, the woman revised her resume and got a new job at the same company making $10k/yr more - probably a 25-30% increase.
As a recruiter, I read thousands of resumes - most of them mediocre. That doesnýt mean Iým good at writing my own resume. I use the book's check lists to make sure I'm not missing anything.
I regard a resume as the best piece of work an individual will ever do. Itýs amazing what you can tell about an individual by ýreading between the linesý of his (or her) resume. What would you do with a Quality Engineer's resume that contains errors? [Toss]! Get this book and use it . . . please.
Great resume basics.......2000-10-11
If you don't know where to start with your resume, this book is one of the resources you should consider before putting pen to paper. It covers all the areas of resume writing, with plenty of do's and don'ts. Resumes are important and set the tone of your job search. Robin Ryan shows how to make the most of your efforts. The 53 common mistakes were helpful and amusing. I enjoyed the book.

Good Overall Reference.......2000-04-10
I purchased this book for my niece when she was graduating from college. She found it very useful. I am also now in the market for a new job and borrowed the book from her and have enjoyed it so much that I am purchasing my own copy. There is a lot of good recommendations on how to keep your resume short and concise. It also provides different examples for a variety of positions. The one drawback I had was that it didn't make reference to including email addresses and web sites.

Customer Reviews:
This book works!.......2006-09-21
I have bought two of Robin Ryan's books, "60 Seconds and You're Hired" and "Soaring on Your Strengths." I believe the 60 Seconds book was instrumental when I landed the job I currently have. I practiced my 60-second pitch and I think it helped me secure the job. One of the interviewers told me later that I was "the cream of the crop,": focused on the job requirements and how I could satisfy them. I've been happy at this job, but started to wonder if I could do better and make more money somewhere else. For the last three or so months, I have been diligently answering ads but not always including a cover letter. My rationale: Why bother? It's too much work, and people don't read them anyway, and if they do, it's only for a few seconds. They'll hire me on the strenghts of my resume. Boy was I wrong.
I have to give Ms. Robin props for writing this effective book. I gauge its success by the results it delivers, and deliver it does. Using one of the techniques she outlines, I sent off a resume and cover letter for a job that's related to my current field but not in the industry I'm in, but pays almost double my current salary. I followed the guidelines and sent them off as a test to see what would happend.
I was amazed that after only two hours of sending off the resume and cover letter, I got an e-mail from the recruiter wanting an interview. Wow--that has never happened to me before. It was even more amazing because it's a very competitive field with plenty of qualified applicants.
I'm now convinced that I will never send off a resume without a thoughtful cover letter that addresses the job at hand and how my experience fits the bill.
If you've been job hunting without success, get this book. It's a very competitive out there and anything that can help distinquish you from the pack is worth the effort. This book helped me focus on my strengths and accomplishments. Its small price belies the wealth of information and insight you'll get.
Lots useful advice and common sense.......2006-03-21
I found this book really useful and could not stop wondering how could so much common sense escape my understanding before? Ms Ryan's advice is pretty obvious, however, here we are doing it wrong once and again. I can't say this book is responsible for me getting or not getting interviews so far, but at least I now feel confident enough to think I'm sending a decent cover letter. If you think that this book is going to make the process of cover letter writing faster and easier, you'll get disappointed since it is rather the opposite. But what has to be done has to be done and at least now you know. I didn't give it 5 stars because it gets too repetitive, full of examples that are great, but as usual, there may be one in twenty (if any) that even resembles one's own situation.

Great, practical advice.......2005-01-10
What this book does well is respond to specific scenarios, and then provide examples of resumes and cover letters. I previously considered cover letters to be pretty useless, but after reviewing this book I can see how a good one could make a difference. An HR friend of mine also stressed that a good letter can make a difference. I found the "power impact technique" to make perfect sense. Job hunting in today's market is all about selling yourself, and I think the suggestions in this book help do that. Those readers who were disappointed should remember that even if the "power impact technique" provides a formula approach, it is hard to deny that the sentences are attention getting....and getting someone to "take notice" and read further is the first step to the interview.
HR manager says excellent resource; buy & use!.......2004-05-14
I am an HR Manager and I can highly recommend this book as the authority on cover letters. Not only do I recommend it to others, I just used it myself and dramatically improved my cover letters. The new boss who hired me stated he thought my cover letter was excellent and my resume really got his attention. I used both Ryan's books " Winning Cover Letters, and her other book "Winning Resumes". I give them my highest endorsement.
this book helped me get the job!.......2004-02-09
I hate writing cover letters but the author outlined a formula that was easy to follow. After not getting any results I used this book to create my winning cover letter (and I used her Winning Resume book too), and I got an interview for a great mid-level manager postion. I landed the job and they commented on how impressed they had been by my letter & resume. This author is a pro -- buy this book if you want real guidnace in landing a new or better job. If I can learn to write an effective cover letter, anyone can.

The best resume book.......2001-08-12
If you like things taking you "step by step" and providing examples along the way, you'll love this book. I hated other books blabbing on and on about marketing yourself and speaking abstractly. This one started page one with (I paraphrase) "Okay, let's make a big ol' list of edu/experience/skills..etc broken down into categories. You'll pick from this list to build your resume for a specific job.
Sounds like "duh", right? But that is the great thing about it. It was clear easy steps on what to do and in what order. Take a little bit on at a time, and before you know it, you've got a winning resume! Don't waste your time with the other books. You wont get anywhere. This book "holds your hand" in a good way.
Customer Reviews:
Strongly recommended for everyone looking for a job today.......1997-09-24
I strongly recommend this book to everyone looking for any type of job in today's job market. Regardless of your circumstance or situation, this book will grab your attention and introduce you to the concept of the "online resume". The authors do an excellent job of giving the reader strong examples of how more and more companies are using computer technology to screen applicants for available positions by scanning for "keywords" throughout an individual's resume, and why tailoring one's resume' to that technology is crucial for success. Using examples obtained from professional personnel managers and recruiters, the authors convincingly prove their case that an applicant must adapt to the world of jobseeking in the technological resume age and forget about the old resume norms. Writing in plain English, the authors state their case quickly then proceed to likewise prove it. Furthermore, they provide the reader with a cornucopia of resume styles and formats. They even give helpful hints on overcoming past employment difficulties such as prolonged unemployment and how to use existing experience in an unrelated field to one's advantage when looking to change careers.
This book will give anyone looking for their first job or looking to change careers a leg up on the competition in today's cutthroat world of job searching.

Great Tips - if you can translate examples with today's equivalent.......2007-07-09
I found this book helpful for those administrative assistants that are new or fairly new to the field. There are great tips for layout if you have had an extended break in working, and ways to present experience (or lack of experience) and still get your foot in the door for an interview. The resumes presented were, in my opinion, elemental, which is why I would recommend this book for those starting out in the administrative field. Also, some of the examples used will obviously need to be tailored to your situation. There are numerous references to typewriters and wpm, stenographers, etc, that date the book, and you will need to swap this out with what you currently do in your job. (While I may not be average, I personally have not touched a typewriter in my work environment for the last 6 years). There were some great before and after examples of resumes.
However, I am an experienced administrative assistant performs the usual travel arrangements, expenses, and calendaring, and I also actively seek out projects to pursue. My goal in purchasing this book was to show the value of those extra projects on my resume. If this is your intent as well, I would not recommend this book. I also bought Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer at the same time, and have found it to be much more useful in translating my current tasks into marketable skills, as it is much more robust.
The Best!.......2007-07-07
I paid 20 cents for this book online and I can't believe how valuable this book really is. I never realized how poorly my resume was untill I read this book. It has all types of scenarios in it such as resume styles for new grads, career changers, job hoppers, etc.
I followed the styles in this book and have had 3 interview requests already in just 2 weeks! It boggles me that the cheapest book I bought was the biggest return for me!
You will not be disappointed by this book. Yes, it was printed in 1997, but all you have to do is change a few of the words (I think they refer to Word Perfect, just change to Microsoft Office 2003). Fantastic Book!
This book is an excellent tool to use to advance your career.......2001-07-09
This book is excellent! It has really showed me how to make my resume more marketable, and prepare me for a better career. I have passed this book on to my family, and co-workers.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-03-16
Ms. Lefkowitz has produced an outstanding guide that is tailored specifically to administrative people. Other resume books provide the basics, but the formulas and the cookie cutter molds just don't seem to lend themselves to admin careers. Her book is a godsend for professional secretaries. Each of the chapters goes through the steps for translating the myriad of everyday tasks into clear, concise, and impressive bullet items. Her section on writing the qualifications statement is particularly helpful. She breaks it down into parts and shows the reader how to tailor it to each job posting. The examples at the end provide different examples on how to word things as well as ideas for formating and layouts (something that is important for a secretary to demonstrate some talent at doing). Using her instructions and those examples, it's easy to put together a resume that gets results! I've had nothing but compliments (and interviews) after using this book.
the best resume book ever!.......1999-05-14
the book was damn easy to use, and It helped me get the job I was looking for! Id recoment it to anyone who is seriously interested in upgrading their resume writting skills
