Great reference/cheat sheet.......2007-07-26
I have used this book on all my performance reviews, it is so good, that I could not stop picking phrases from it, and my boss had to tell me to be "less verbose" in my self assessment!
Book for new managers.......2007-07-15
This book was recommended in one of my management classes. I was able view it during one of the class breaks. Immediately, I knew it will save me time and effort. Many useful phrases to help and prompt thoughts for reviewing team members.
A good guide .......2007-07-05
I purchased this guide for the supervisors on my team because it gives phrases to use when appraising employees. Its also gives phrases to use when writing awards or other evaulations of performance. The guide is organized into different areas-teamwork, communication skills, productivity, etc. which helps find helpful phrases to use. This guide is simple but elegant in its usefulness.
Who needs this? .......2007-06-12
If I sat on a toilet all day thinking of sycophantic half-sentences, this is probably what I'd come up with. I hate to think about what the brain-dead, incompetent boob who needs a book like this looks like.
It's management speak like this crap that inspired movies like Office Space and television shows such as The Office and Just Shoot Me. On that note, maybe I should give this book five stars.
One thing's for certain, anyone in your office who orders this book should be fired immediately.
Helpful Tool.......2007-05-16
Very helpful tool in writing performance reviews and avoiding redundancy when writing performance reviews.

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.

Features checklists, tables and sample forms that help make planning easy and efficient.
Customer Reviews:
Very dated.......2007-07-30
While this book gives a good starting point for a seminar newbie, it is quite hampered by its dated material. All statistics and pricing examples are from the late 1980's. There is no recognition anywhere in the book that the Internet exists, PowerPoint can be used in presentations, etc. For instance, you are warned against using carbon copy paper. Hello? Good in 1990, but needs a serious and thorough updating to reflect current trends and technologies.
Dated but very good.......2006-06-26
This is a good introductory book for those that need to develop and promote successful seminars and workshops. The book covers what one needs to know about developing a program, market testing, setting the right fees, marketing, promotion, advertising and publicity. The reader is provided with useful practical tips and advice that I have used to good effect.
The book is well written in simple English that is easy to follow and understand. Despite the book being a bit dated, the advice it provides is still relevant and very useful and practical. Even the veteran has something to learn from this excellent book.
Those who wish to capitalize on the growing business of seminars, workshops, conferences and training classes are recommended to read this book for guidance and directions.
Very good service........2005-09-17
Book was sent in a timely manner and I received it in good shape. Thanks.
Great information.......2004-06-23
This book is one of the important books on this topic. I have included this book in my personal library and have referred many people to this book.
Early in my business I provided "public" seminars and this book provided some great advice and tips.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for all Levels of Event Planners.......2007-07-05
This book is a fount of knowledge. Its simple to read and easy to follow. I thought it would be a person spouting about how great they are and not alot of practical information. But I was wrong. This book is helpful in many ways: for the beginner it provides a practical guideline to get started; for the intermediate planner it provides further ways to improve what they have begun; and for the advanced planner it hones their skills with the latest ideas and information.
For myself as an advanced even planner, it confirms that I am right on track with the trend for event planning. The CD with the forms and such are very useful and easy to customize for each planner or event.
I have already recommended this book to a large organization to use to train other event planners!
Event Planning made easy.......2007-04-11
This is a great high level overview of event planning. I am still looking for a reference with more detailed checklists and events of a more civic nature. But it was great to get the accompanying CD to use to start making your own checklists. And a great way to see all the possible areas that could be involved with planning events, especially large ones.
Very informative.......2007-04-09
Having to plan an event? First time or old pros needing a refresher go no further than this book. Shannon Kilkenny has outdone herself here with step by step instructions and tips to walk you through the whole process of planning and executing even the most difficult event you've ever faced. I found the charts, lists and forms both in the text and the copies on the CD ROM for easy print out to be the most beneficial.
I think the best thing about this book is that you can take away something from reading the whole book cover to cover. But you can also take away information from individual chapters if the whole book doesn't apply to you. The best example of this I can give is that my mother was panicked last week over trying to plan my little sister's 16th birthday. I told mom that while I'd only read this book last week for a friends baby shower that I thought she might want to take a peek at it. When I came over the day before my sister's party to help with setup my mom said that the book had more than paid for itself. It had shown her a much less stressful way to do what she was trying to do. She said that she skipped the chapters aimed at event planners but that a lot of the later chapters helped her immensely in avoiding disaster or over planning for the party. This is a definite read for anyone trying to plan an event from the smallest birthday party to a large banquet or conference.
If you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice........2007-04-07
If a reference to planning events is needed you can't do better than Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning, a pick for planners and public libraries alike. Here's all the basics for planning all kinds of events, from seminars, receptions, weddings, dances, reunions and retreats. From money-saving tips and identifying and reaching target markets to choosing dates and designing events, it covers all aspects from budget to set-up and beyond. A few other guides cover this topic lightly - if you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice.
An Inspirational Guide To Success! .......2007-03-26
I've planned successful corporate Christmas parties, software user group conferences, non-profit fundraisers, weddings, church gatherings, and awards banquets but I found new ways to enhance my services and make the processes flow more smoothly when I read "The Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning".
Shannon Kilkenny provides comprehensive planning guidelines in a way that stimulates further brainstorming and creativity. She teaches you how to easily and systematically envision, create and run a fantastic event that will be memorable for all of the participants, enjoyable for the planner, and profitable when appropriate.
I particularly liked her advice on "greening" your event. Providing organic meals and other environmentally friendly offerings sends a positive message to participants, the community and potential clients. People want to hire event planners who are responsible people. What better way to demonstrate and promote your services than to host an event that is appealing, well-run and certified as environmentally sound?
This book does an excellent job of guiding you through the process of planning a successful event and is a must have for anyone who may be called upon to coordinate a gathering.

Successful Presentations.......2002-03-30
This book is the best and gave me valuable tips to make effective presentation. Knowing how to communicate effectively, I can improve my teaching style. When I translate text pages into a brief presentation visual, my creativity enhance.
Reccomend highly.......2002-03-04
If you have to do presentations, chances are you don't have much time to wade through literature about how. Many books exist on the subject; this has got to be one of the best - covers basically all you need to know about How and Why rather than What. Zelazny helps the reader to find his/her own way, which is ultimately better than being spoon fed as in the disappointingly dry "McGraw-Hill One Day Workshop on Presentation Skills"
Buy this book if you rely on giving presentations for your job. Even if you are facing a one-off crisis presentation, this book can be read fast enough to offer concrete help immediately.
Oh - it's fun an humorous too. But a bit expensive.
Useful, but just for beginners.......2001-08-23
I am a strategic consultant and I founded the book too simple. It is highly recomended (together with "Say it with charts") if you are brand new in a consultancy firm or, because of your job, you occasionally have to do professional presentations and you want to acquire a basic methodology. It is a good book for starters, but presentations is kind of an art and it is a skill difficult to get.
Real help for you, the presenter.......2000-01-25
Say It With Presentations steps beyond the "How to give a speech" story of its peers. Gene shows us what works, why it works, and, most importantly, how we can all make it work. I have not seen a better book for giving business presentations than this and don't expect to find one.
The secret is simplicity.
Following his own advice, Gene makes the book simple and has simple examples and arguments for ideas that are soooooo tempting to complicate.
This is not a book to read. It is a manual to review, a guide to follow, a resource for self help, and a reminder of the rights of the audience.
Most importantly, it is fun to refer back to constantly both before and after presentations.
Common-sense guidelines to cut through the presentation fog.......2000-01-15
Gene Zelazny has once again proved that by following a few common-sensical guidelines, no one needs to create a business presentation that bores their audience. In an age where too many business communicators rely on Powerpoint to fog their ideas and confuse their audience, Zelazny's advice is in great need. Perhaps if all of Sun Microsystem's employees were required to read this, there'd be no need to ban Powerpoint.
In this follow-up to the successful "Say It With Charts", Zelazny continues to ask the reader to focus on the needs of the audience, to use the presentation to create a dialogue with the listener, and to use the presentation to support the message. He provides much needed guide to use of new media and proves, once again, that in the communication of complex ideas, less is more.
Buy several copies! Keep one for yourself and have one handy for the next business presentation that puts you to sleep. That presenter will thank you.

The Synchronous Trainer's Survival Guide is a hands-on resource for enhancing your real-time e-learning sessions. Written by Jennifer Hofmann, a synchronous training leader, it is the first and only book focusing solely on this emerging training method. If you're new to synchronous training, everything you need to know is right here. If you're a seasoned pro the practical tips, tools, and customizable templates in this book will ensure the success of your online training courses, meetings, and events.
Customer Reviews:
A rare and excellent resource.......2004-12-15
I have been managing a synchronous language learning program for the past two years. When we first started, I wasted a lot of money (and time) on e-learning books which had nothing at all to say about synchronous virtual classrooms. Two years ago, the most anyone had to say about synchronous was that it would be "the wave of the future." I needed practical, tested suggestions for best practice in setting up, preparing for and conducting live classes over the Internet, and these books gave me exactly zero input.
Hofmann's Synchronous Trainer's Survival Guide" is exactly what I needed two years ago. It's sufficiently general to accomodate differences in platform design and functionality, which a focus on best practice in optimizing the enjoyment and learning value of online classes. It's a slim book - you can easily read it in an afternoon, but filled with concise and informative bulletted lists with titles like "Using your voice", "Language tips", "Gauging participation", "Reading participant cues", etc.
Some of our teachers have had trouble making the transition from the traditional classroom to the virtual classroom, and I've been looking for a resource like this to give them pointers, and to let them realize that the frustrations they're experiencing are not unique to them. I'm ordering copies of this book for all of our teachers and I expect that they'll be going back to it again and again.
Just like it's name says - a survival guide!.......2003-12-01
A concise, well written guide to this new medium for training delivery. Simple format, simple language - makes this somewhat scary technological field easy to understand! This book really put my mind at ease. Thank you!

Practical tools and expert advice for professional event planners
Before planning an event, there is much that must be done behind the scenes to make the event successful. Before any thought is even given to timing or location of the event, before the menus are selected and the decor designed, there are proposals to be written, fees and contracts to be negotiated, and safety issues to be considered. This book takes you behind the scenes of event planning and explains every aspect of organizing and strategic planning. This book will be of value to both the professional event planner and to clients who are dealing with planners.
Its comprehensive coverage includes: how to prepare winning proposals, and how to understand them if you are the client; how to determine management fees; negotiating contracts; safety issues; designing events in multicultural settings; and new technology that makes operations more efficient (such as online registration and response management, database project management tools). The book also includes practical tools such as sample letters of agreement, sample layouts for client proposals, forms, and checklists. Professional event planner Judy Allen offers first-time or professional event planners all the top-class advice they need to make their special events come off without a hitch.

Practical for special events, but does not distingish between event planning like weddings and conventions. Still pretty good.
Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-06-12
Planning a corporate party or special event? Don't lift a finger until you've read The Business of Event Planning. In this highly practical book, author Judy Allen covers every aspect of the process in exhaustive detail. Allen, an author, writer and experienced event planner, contends that events are more than just feel-good activities. Events, she says, must be staged as strategic tools with return-on-investment potential. If you want to know how, she covers all the basics. Even though the book is geared toward large events, the principles can be applied to functions of any size. Allen includes details of proposal writing, itineraries, contract negotiations, fee setting, high tech applications and security concerns in a post-September-11 world. We recommend this logistical guide to corporate staffers or event planners who want to master the fine details.

Planning for Planners.......2002-08-25
With a strong endorsement from Susan Fenner Ph.D, Manager, Education and Professional Development, International Association of Administrative Professionals, Allen strives to teach the how-tos of planning special events. This incredibly detailed profession has been known to send any number of otherwise level-headed individuals screaming and dashing for the exits.
Yet, with Allen's assistance and Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which explains the promotions side of events, both a newcomer and an experienced professional can benefit from this book.
Well-written, this book may save many a person from high blood pressure.
A Must Read.......2002-08-12
This book gives a step-by-step plan on how to plan special events. It is a great reference for anyone who plans a career in this filed. I would also recommend Guerilla PR Wired by Michael Levine along with this book. These two cover the basis for PR and events planning.
Book Description

Great planning resource.......2005-08-05
Since my position recently acquired the duties of meeting planning, I have found this book to be written in a manner that is easy to reference. It is written by an individual who actually did the type of job most planners hold so you get realistic and practical tips. Well written and I will definitely use on a regular basis.
great overview guide.......2003-04-01
This book is really easy to follow, with checklists and short paragraphs on every area. It's a great resource for those who are getting started in planning or those who want a handy checklist to make sure they don't forget areas. Professional planners may find much of the information basic, but a good refresher.
A very de-tailed and practical manual for meeting planning........1999-07-20
A very de-tailed and practical manual of meeting planning. Could add more chapters on languages and interpretation and master of ceremonies to meet the need of international events planners.
Book Description
Here's the ultimate working handbook of negotiating, written with humour, irreverence, and simplicity by a superstar negotiator and beloved negotiating coach.
How to get the best deal every time!
Negotiate to Win is a shot of double espresso for a tired publishing category. Unlike most other negotiating books, it is written by the consummate practitioner, an internationally admired negotiating superstar who loves to communicate and teach, who is passionate about negotiating in every aspect of life, and wickedly clever about our American reluctance to negotiate and how to overcome it. Negotiate to Win has one goal––to immediately and meaningfully improve readers' negotiating skills. It delivers its message in clear, straightforward steps and lively, conversational language. Jim Thomas knows just the right images, details, examples, and anecdotes to drive home his points.
Negotiate to Win is fun to read. The author's lively, irreverent, and warm humour energizes every page, and inspires readers to learn and remember its principles. Negotiate to Win is reader–friendly, combining a pithy overview of the cultural and business realities of negotiating, Thomas' 21 rules of successful negotiating, scenarios for getting the best deal in different everyday situations, and a list of Thomas' Truisms of negotiating wisdom.
Negotiate to Win is comprehensive, but it doesn't waste the reader's time with lengthy theoretical discussions. Its mission is to extract the small handful of techniques that actually work from the vast, weedy thicket of negotiating bromides, clichés, theories, and folklore, and to make those techniques intelligible and useful to the reader. The book drives home the importance of reaching long–lasting mutually beneficial solutions for the negotiator and her counterpart.

Customer Reviews:
A High Quality Book.......2007-01-08
According to Kurt Lewin, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory". This is an apt comment in reference to Jim Thomas's book "Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating". The author methodically and clearly explained his 21 rules for successful negotiations in a readable and humorous manner, in a way that readers can easily implement them.
Jim Thomas stresses the need for win-win negotiations and how to achieve them. When carrying out effective negotiations is spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their application to the complex world of negotiations becomes self-evident. The author does a good job of presenting the negotiation process in an easy to read and understand manner that is both useful and practical to all those that are interested in achieving successful and effective negotiations. Novices will be provided a path whilst the seasoned practitioners will find affirmation.
While the book is an excellent guide for people involved in negotiations in the corporate world, it is also a valuable resource in the home and other scenarios.
Great Book easy and fun to read.......2006-12-03
Unlike Herb Cohen's book "Negotiate This" Negotiate to Win: The 21 Rules for Successful Negotiating will teach tricks of the trade from page one. This book will lay out how to start the negotiation, how to react to first offers, how to get to a great postion to counteroffer, and finally how to realize when someone is at the bottom line. It is easy to understand and fun to read. The tips and the practices can be used in real life scenarios from day one and incorporated into negotiations immediately, even with no practice. The rules will help in every scenario and show how the other side may react to concessions, counteroffers, nibbles and krunches. I highly recommend this book to anyone it is the best book on negiations I have read.
A very handy and usable guide to negotiating.......2006-09-04
Many of the tips in the book sound familiar from the other books on negotiating I've read. However, the author here does a good job in making a very readable guide as well as does a good job in explaining why the tip works. He also highlights particular pitfalls that await the unwary.
The author mentions early on that he is trying to add some humor into the work and apologizes, in advance, if we find it offensive. Nothing really stood out as offensive, but some jokes don't seem to fit with the principle he was explaining.
The tips are easy to remember, but as with all skills, the reader needs to practice these. The book is more than clear in explaining what and how to do it. I plan on using some of these myself.
The author points out that the bottom line is sometimes the bottom line. I never really thought about this, but it fits with the notion of win-win negotiating. We have to remember that most of our negotiations have an ongoing relationship component.
The back provides some tips on negotiating for a car or home. These are the most common negotiations we get into.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to brush up their negotiating skills. This is a skill that will help you at work or at home.
Negotiate to Win.......2006-05-23
I bought the book because I was scheduled to go to a seminar of the same name.... I reluctantly started it thinking I was going to have to choke down a couple pages a day. Much to my surprise, I LOVED it! The content is very practical and usable...and.... the manner in which Jim shares the message is not only entertaining, but downright funny. Highly recommend the book....as well as the seminar.
Witty and smart.......2005-12-14
Jim Thomas is an intelligent and funny man. Just read this book to see. His approach to negotiating is invigorating and principled. If you follow his rules, you should find yourself rewarded with good deals without humiliating the other person. If you walk away with nothing else from this book, take this: Americans are some of the worst negotiators in the world, so you are immediately one leg up on everyone else.

Not Worth It.......2003-08-06
I needed information on basic meeting protocol and thought this book would give me some of that. No luck, it it more for organizations who have problems, than for a person learing to run meeting in practical terms.
For me it was a waste of money.
