    Book Description

Gary Waller surveys Spenser's career in terms of the material conditions of its production - the often overlooked material factors of race, gender, class, agency - and the resonant 'places' which influenced his career - court, church, nation, colony. The book includes an original account of the gender politics of Spenser's work and his difficult position between Ireland and England, the 'homes' about which he held ambivalent feelings. Waller also discusses the 'place' the biographer occupies in writing a literary life.

      4 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) A Beautiful Love Story.......2007-08-05

Autumn Nicholson was an accountant at the top of her game and was successful in her occupation. She had friends she adored, and they adored her as well. The only thing missing in Autumn's life was true love. She had met her fair share of guys that she thought were "the one," but soon she would find out that they weren't. She had this brick wall around her heart and swore off any type of intimacy until she found the man she would marry. Soon her brick wall started to crumble when she met L.J. Saunders. Their first encounter wasn't necessarily what you would call love at first sight. But things soon change between them, and sparks start to fly. Will L.J. be able to shatter Autumn's wall or will it instead become a fortress?

Other People's Business by Pamela Yaye is a beautiful love story between two people that have had their share of bad relationships. Through the turmoil, they find each other and fall in love...even with all of the obstacles they keep running into. If you enjoy good romance novels and are not too keen on the sappy kind, then this book is for you. Pamela Yaye put a few tear-jerking moments in there, but she'll also have you talking out loud, yelling "Oh No He Didn't!" at times too. I would recommend Other People's Business to anyone that loves a happy ending.

      4 out of 5 stars A wondefully written debut..........2007-05-24

Pamela Yaye's debut novel, Other People's Business, is a wonderful addition to the busy African-American romance market.

Accountant Autumn Nicholson is fighting to show the world that she can make it on her own without the input and influence of her well-to-do family and friends. She's made a success of herself in her accountancy firm and has given up on love as she struggles to rid herself of her uncommitted boyfriend who is all too happy to survive on the backs of his wealthy and politically-connected father. The novel opens with Autumn being disappointed by him once again and having to depend upon the help of a kind, if scruffy, stranger L.J. Saunders.

L.J. Saunders comes to her rescue when a flat tire leaves her stranded. Put off by his unkempt appearance and the nature of their meeting, Autumn puts him out off her mind until she encounters him at the engagement party of her best friend. With L.J. as the best man and Autumn as a bridesmaid, they are thrown together in a number of social situations and soon sparks fly.

Their road to romance is an adventurous and rocky one with Autumn continuing to struggle with her past relationship disappointments and L.J. being extremely wary of love based on a recent romantic failure. Author Yaye crafts a fine romance in her telling of Autumn and L.J.'s story. She develops her characters and story line like a seasoned pro rather than a debut author. This adventure was a captivating one and I look forward to her future romantic forays.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!!.......2007-04-13

This book is sensational!!! Autumn and L.J.'s story was exciting and breath-taking from begining to end. Every page was wonderful, I read the entire book in two days. I just couldn't put it down!!!! I am waiting on the next book!!!!

I was hoping for a fun and simple Italian book to read to my daughter, to expose her to the language. I studied Italian for a few years in college and got along well on my travels to Italy, so I would say I am above a "beginner" but not at the "intermediate" level.

We have some other cute Italian books that a family member brought from Rome, and we love reading them aloud. However, this book (La Scuola) has some words that are difficult for me to sound out and say, especially quickly enough to make sense. I cringe a little when my daughter picks up this book for me to read, since it is really difficult. There are not a whole lot of words, but the ones there are awkward for me.

I bought this book and 2 other Joanne Barkan books (La Pasticceria and Ufficio Postale) for my 3 year-old. She quickly learned many of the Italian phrases. I only wish there were a translation into English at the end, or at the bottom of each page. My daughter loves the books, though, which is good enough for me!

Lays out the basics of modern portfolio theory in very concise fashion. Makes the case for indexing crystal-clear. Provides a useful guide to asset allocation and relevant asset classes.

My only quibble is that if everyone followed the asset allocation suggested in the book, which is heavily skewed towards small-cap value stocks, imbalances would be created that would eliminate the gains to be had from them.

I am recently retired, and an avid investor. This is the absolute best retirement planning and basic investing book I have found. It distills complex topics, such as modern portfolio theory, into easy to follow, easy to read chapters. I have bought a half dozen copies I have given to my kids and friends, and plan to buy more. This is a must read for people from college age through well into retirement age.

... and provides such solid, convincing, factual evidence and research to support Mr. Davis' "Buy index funds only" advice that I'm afraid eventually everyone will discover it and stop buying any individual stocks altogether. Would that screw things up? I dunno, maybe not.

In any case ... Mr. Davis lays out a portfolio of index mutual funds for the reader in Chapters 30 & 31 that should optimize anybody's individual investment situation.

I've got a pretty decent savings now - But, I will say that I've gone back and compared what I actually invested in (since my I started investing in 1996) to how I would've done had I had this book in 1996 - I'd have much more than twice as much money, mainly because it would have eliminated my large losses/ mistakes. This just about makes me cry!

I wish Mr. Davis would establish a website where readers could ask questions or advice that may not pertain to everyone, like the advice in this book does.

Great book. This book represents the "Cliff's Notes" of 20 other books on individual investing. It strongly makes the case for a portfolio of index funds, with minimum expense ratios, and gives practical lists of how to implement such a strategy. Don't establish your personal portfolio without reading this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2005-08-12

I have been an avid investor since I was 12 years old (I am now 53) and have read numerous books on investing. This is one of the best if not the best I have read on this subject. Steve Davis has written an outstanding book that presents very clearly and concisely the best advice out there for individual investors. He explains modern portfolio theory and shows how to apply it in a very practical manner that anyone could follow. I have recommended and given this book to many friends. I refer to his book frequently as I am preparing for my own retirement. I only wish this book had been available 30 years ago.

      Book Description

Anybody lucky enough to have experienced the artistry of Valerie Wilson Wesley already knows that her ability to blend wry humor with stark reality is unsurpassed. And now she plies her talents in a new direction in an insightful, poignant story of family ties unraveling and lost loves regained.

Eva is alone with an empty heart in a big, empty house. Hutch fears he is falling in love with the neglected wife of his wealthy, philandering best friend. Charley, Eva's law school-bound daughter, forgets her plans for school to become a stand-up comedian. Steven, Hutch's son, harbors a secret that will rock his father's world. And into the mix strolls Isaiah Lonesome, Charley's ex-boyfriend, a handsome hunk of a twenty-eight-year-old jazz musician who will teach Eva to play some lusty new riffs on love's oldest song. And in the end, everyone learns that when it comes to living life to the fullest, and in the quest for true love, it ain't nobody's business how one goes about it.

Valerie Wilson Wesley's AIN'T NOBODY'S BUSINESS IF I DO is a delightful story of an African-American family in transition that is, at once, touching, sad, and funny, and that celebrates love, personal freedom, and the pursuit of happiness with charm, humor, and wisdom.

First I must say that I am a Wilson-Wesley fan and I enjoyed her departure from the Detective series. It showed that she has range and is willing to tackle difficult topics. For example, we all may feel that sleeping with your daughter's ex-boyfriend isn't a good idea, but it makes for interesting discussion. I think that she does a relatively good job reflecting/discussing the difficulties of life, a mid-life crisis, parental relationships and just growing pains. Overall, I thought it was decent and definately worth discussing. For those who are die-heart Hayle fans, you will either love it or hate it. Come on though, give it a chance.

      Book Description

After reading the newspapers and following the sharp oscillations of the stock market, it becomes apparent that hi-tech companies are of a different breed. Never before have the chances of making a fortune been so realistic and never before have large companies been so fragile. What is really going on inside these hi-tech companies? What types of pressures and challenges are they facing? And how do they cope?

Computer software providers, especially the ones that specialize in handling the data needs of organizations, are prime examples of these volatile companies. In the nineties we witnessed their growth from small businesses into multi-billion dollar giants. No wonder investors were attracted.

In 1998 it was easy for such companies to raise as much money as they wanted. But now, investment funds have dried up. Why? And more importantly, is there a way to reverse the trend? This book gives the answers.

      2 out of 5 stars 99% Novel, 1% TOC.......2005-05-17

Necessary But Not Sufficient can be boiled down to three points:

      1. Technology is worthless if it doesn't bring bottom-line value.
      2. "Drum-buffer-rope" and "Buffer Management" are good
      3. "Pull" inventory management is good

As an rabid reader and huge fan of The Goal, I was dissapointed with the delivery of this book. The fictional plot was boring and the characters were met with absolute apathy. While the above three points are repeated ad nauseum, no real background or detail is revealed on their delivery or use. Instead, Necessary But Not Sufficient is written as lengthy pieces of plot followed by short, almost textbook definitions of these business concepts.

If you're looking for a more interesting and in-depth read, stick with The Goal. Otherwise, shop around for a more engaging and insightful book.

2 out of 5 stars Worst of the TOC Novels.......2004-02-24

This book has very little new material from previous TOC books. It doesn't lead the reader as well as The Goal or It's Not Luck. In short it is a "Rah-Rah" book telling the reader how great TOC is without giving much detail and in the context of a novel that doesn't create a great amount of character sympathy. I really don't understand how a man as brilliant as Goldratt could have written this. Get The Goal, It's Not Luck, and the appropriate textbook(s) to implement TOC in your business.

      1 out of 5 stars Student's point of View.......2004-02-14

I'm a student at Tec de Monterrey, in Mexico City. I've been assigned to read The Goal, it wasn't luck and this necessary but not suficient. I have to say that when i read the goald and it's second part i really loved the book. I was introduced to this concepts like DBR and inventory management. While i was reading necessary... i thought, this is by far the worst book written by this author (also read the race).

As a novel there's nothing exciting about it, is not that the other's had me in the edge of my chair, but at least there u could feel the threat was bigger, closing the factory and selling three of them.

And here trying to use TOC and DBD in the technology environment just doesn't work. U could see where the book was going to end, probably cause we are living in that time where u have to make the future.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary.......2003-01-09

This book is a journey of about a year and a quarter into the ERP market through the eyes of a hypothetical company BGSoft and its implementation partner KPI Solutions. Scott the CEO of BGSoft is a visionary who delivers business results for his clients through his ERP software. Lenny the head of Development, Gail his marketing chief and Maggie of KPI are the other key players in this novel.

Like any other technology company BGSoft faces the uphill task of growing 40 % every year if it has to keep the analysts happy and retain its stock price. It is a key player in the ERP market and its customers are primarily Fortune 1000 companies who can afford the investments and fuel the growth that BGSoft is aiming at. Suddenly Scott realizes that most of the big companies have already adopted ERP and their next best bet is to look for mid size companies. If there are no more deer left in the forest then one has to go after the rabbits. Hunting for rabbits needs the same effort and results in lesser meat per win. Can BGSoff continue to grow at the same rate?

Now there is an unusual call from Craig, CEO of Pierco one of BGSoft's largest customers. Thanks to a new Director, his Board has asked him to justify the investment that he has made in ERP. Call it by whatever name or any flavor of the latest technology jargon, the Board wants to know the impact on two important measures - top line and bottom line. The story now takes a very interesting turn, turning away from the routine issues of features, schedules, budgets, bugs, staffing and project management that are characteristic of any ERP company. The primary issue then becomes delivering true business value that customers can get from IT solutions rather than implementing software from leading vendors on fancy technologies.

Once again, it is worthwhile to mention - Top line and Bottom line - what comes in from the customers and what is retained for the shareholders. Get this right or get out of here is the message for all CEOs. BGSoft now sees a paradigm shift - they need to sell value and not just software.

ERP implementations are typically seen as automating data flow across different functions in an organization. True, it enables to break walls within but sadly the rules of the game continue to remain unchanged, defeating the purpose of better information flow. Technology is necessary, but not sufficient is the core theme of this book.

In the process of helping Craig to find justification for his investment in BGSoft' ERP, we get a deep inside view of Pierco's operations. Excess inventory, production bottlenecks and plenty of infighting between functions who are expected to work towards common goals. Performance measures continue to aim at locally optimal solutions ignoring the final impact on customer service.

Scott is quick to introduce the concepts of TOC- Drum-Buffer Rope method and Buffer management in Pierco. This releases forty percent capacity but causes an unexpected problem- plenty of inventory. TOC concept is then extended to distribution and soon across the entire operations of Pierco. Inventory is kept close to the plant and shipments to warehouses are based on replenishment of actual sales. The entire process shifts from "Push" to "Pull". The results are dramatic. Craig is celebrating!

Craig calls on Scott and Maggie with a proposal to extend the solution to all his vendors and clients. Internet technologies would help. He is keen to focus on his business and not worry about software, hardware, upgrades and the hassles of the IT function. If KPI could help him, he is willing to part with half a percent of his revenues for the services to begin with and then it would jump to one percent a year.

Focus on results for the business, and keep the software simple. Do not allow the tendency of adding feature after feature to complicate the ERP. Extend the solution across the entire supply chain to service the end customer as one logical entity. The top line and bottom line would head north, is a very clear message from this book.

1 out of 5 stars The plot is the constraint!.......2002-05-03

Don't get me wrong--I'm a big TOC fan. I loved The Goal, Critical Chain, and It's Not Luck. I even bought a textbook on TOC. I was so excited for this book and so disappointed. I'm surprised anybody has given this book more than two starts. The plot is 100% non-captivating and I learned NOTHING new about TOC.

Please Mr. Goldratt--Give us something good next time.
