Customer Reviews:
Well written! Exciting photographs!.......2007-09-19
Linda Hayward's beginning reader gives children a detailed and fascinating look into the day of a fireman and the job that he does dring a 24 hour shift. There are safety inspections, rescue work, checking all the equipment in the firehouse, etc.
The picture word list in the back of the book is an excellent feature, refreshing the reader's knowledge.
Engaging Story - Great Images.......2007-02-20
I haven't met a kid yet who didn't have at least a passing interest in firetrucks and firefighters. This book gives curious children a peak into the "real" life of an every day hero. The vocabulary is just right for beginning readers and the images will keep the attention of younger listeners.
This book also serves as a useful tool to speak to your children about fire safety.
Good for younger kids, too.......2007-02-18
Although these books are intended for young readers, my two-year-old daughter enjoys having them read to her. The language is easy and direct, the connection between words and pictures is very clear, and the short length fits her attention span.
We have about six books from this series, but "A Day in the Life of a Fire Fighter" is her favorite - and she now loves to point out the "Exit" sign and fire extinguisher in any building we visit.
DK books are wonderful.......2003-07-14
My daughter is 4 1/2 and is beginning to read. The DK books are wonderful and she loves them. The pictures are very good (all DK books are excellently illustrated) and the short stories hold her interest. This series is great in that the reading levels are clearly marked on the book cover, so she knows what to look for when at the library or bookstore.
I also appreciate DK because of their quality binding. Unlike so many other children books, DK uses heavy glossy paper-stock.

A Quick Look at Speed Reading.......2006-04-01
This book presents a basic do-it-yourself speed reading course in six chapters laid out as follows:
1: The Speed Reading Aventure Begins (a pep talk)
2: Understanding Why We Read Slowly--And How to Change (a little theory)
3: Learn to Jog, not Walk, through Your Reading (the basics)
4: Learn to Run, not Jog ... (adding some bells and whistles)
5: Learn to Sprint, not Run ... (kicking it into overdrive)
6: Understanding and Remembering What You Read (a presentation of the "Fistnote" technique for retention)
Appendix A: A syllabus for a company in-service on speed reading.
Each chapter gives a clear, concise how-to on the performance of the technique and exercises to perfect the techniques. As the student gains skill and confidence with each technique, the following chapter presents more advanced techniques.
Geared for the busy professional, and an excellent expenditure of funds for anyone wanting to increase reading speed. This is the second speed reading book I've read. "Remember Everything You Read" was the first. Previously I read about 2-3 books per week, mostly nonfiction. I'm reading one per day now. I'll probably burn out on that pace in a couple of weeks, but so far it's been great.
FOOTNOTE: After about a month, I burned out on the rapid pace of reading a book a day. Someone once told me that when you speed read, you "coil up with a good book," and that is an accurate assessment. I'm still reading much faster than before, but slowing down some has improved my enjoyment of reading.

Customer Reviews:
A smart, practical approach.......2005-07-08
The author provides the complete toolset essential for reading comprehension. For example, the author shows exactly what a "main idea" is, provides definitions and examples, provides hands-on practice and tests reader understanding, and then ties several related tool-skills together in a later review chapter with further integrated practice materials. This sensible approach was missing or lacking in every other book I read; the first grade reading comprehension books I browsed at the bookstore were more helpful than those books. I have been out of formal education for many years and I read several top-brand books trying to get solid help. None of those books were nearly as helpful as this one book. In fact, (Elizabeth L. Tesla) the author's series of books is a must for every personal reference book shelf- even appropriate for younger children. This one book answers all of the questions and solves all of the problems related to reading, but the author also points out correctly that a reader must practice in everyday situations by reading a variety of materials and applying the tools in this book. Reading is a lifelong enjoyment and acquired skill. Buy this book and then practice, practice, practice.
Understand what you read!.......2003-11-04
Finally! I was having a problem with reading comprehension. I was having a hard time with my homework, and also preparing for English tests. This book really breaks down the best way to understand what you read. All the practice really helps too!
Great book for SAT prep.......2000-06-05
This book is great, it boosted my SAT score by 100 points. I benefitted a lot from the contents and it gives you great practice. I suggest you buy the book for test prep. The book does exactly what it says on the cover.

Can a woman's version of The Prince actually work?
There's a sidelong sensibility at work in this post-feminist analog to the Renaissance's great work of strategy. Harriet Rubin urges women to triumph by turning their enemies into allies and their fear into power; by enlarging their sphere rather than defending it; and by learning to best instead of win.
But there's a delicate wryness to the art of balancing tensions to one's advantage. One of the most telling examples is that of Sun Tzu, who bet the emperor he could turn the twelve royal concubines into fierce warriors, but was bested by the concubines, who simply giggled when he barked orders at them. Modern women may find interpreting this a challenge, but an entertaining one.
Book Description
A legacy of leadership for women only.
For centuries men have used the lessons of Machiavelli's The Prince to gain and hold power. Today's women, struggling to succeed in a man's world, must learn a crucial lesson of their own: men and women are not equal--and that is a woman's greatest strength. From the wars of intimacy to battles of public life, whether confronting bosses, competitors, or lovers, the greatest power belongs to the woman who dares to use the subtle weapons that are hers alone.
This provocative work urges women to claim what they want and deserve, offering a bold new battle plan that celebrates a woman's unique gifts: passion and intuition, sensitivity and cunning. It draws from history's legendary female divas and poets, saints and sinners, artists and activists--who, armed with a desire for justice and a spirit of outrageousness, achieved their impossible dreams. Their lasting legacy is codified in The Princessa: act like a woman, fight like a woman, and life will be yours to command.
Customer Reviews:
Waste of my time.......2007-08-27
Too many words, not enough examples.
As a young female engineer, I was hoping to hear detailed suggestions on how to stay feminine, yet command attention and respect from older male coworkers. Instead, she seemed to ramble and repeat herself a lot.
Hidden truths revealed.......2007-07-05
For me, I had read Machiavelli and was shocked yet awakened to the ruthless mind. In the Princessa, which I read in '99, the most important and useful truth for me was the statement: "One act reveals the enemy's entire strategy". This is something I have experimented with over and over and have found it to be true in evaluating people's and company's motives. If a book can teach me an important lesson that stays with me for years, it's worth reading.
The Princessa.......2006-09-13
This book is a must have for every woman, this book validated for me how I view life and the people in it. I thought I was crazy alway's imagining myself as a general going into battle, I realize now I was and will alway's be a Princessa. although Mrs Rubin took too long time to get to the meat of this issue, this book is a must have for every woman.
Mostly Common Sense.......2006-05-30
My book club read this book and were very impressed with it. In this day and age of everything moving so quickly it is easy to get caught up and not see what is happening around you at work and in everyday life. We were amazed to see how we had each had an opportunity to apply some strategy or another shortly after reading it! It is in my desk for whenever I need to sharpen my senses. As I was reading it a situation came up with my insurance company had I not read this I would have been bullied into what they wanted rather than seeing the manipulation coming and deflecting it as the book enabled me to do. A definite keeper!

Read Better Remember More.......2001-07-25
As a teacher of learning disabled students, I have used this book with my older students to help them attain the skills they need to improve their reading comprehension. Read Better Remember More presents reading skills in a systematic way that builds upon each skill that has been mastered. It contains 20 minute lessons on skills such as using the dictionary, finding the main idea, finding the supporting details etc. Each lesson is self-contained and focused on one skill. It also contains a pre-test that helps identify a student's weaknesses and strengths although it does recommend doing each lesson in order and not omit anything. This is so the student does not miss any helpful information.Reading More Understanding Better can also be used by students working on their own because the lessons are clear and the explanations are comprehensive. This book was recommended to me by another reading teacher and I am recommending it to others as well.

Book Description
Language acquisition is one of the key milestones in early childhood development. So much of a child's future social and intellectual development hinges on this milestone, that its delay can create a domino effect that begins with isolation and withdrawal, turns into poor academic performance, and eventually leads to the development of learning disabilities and social problems. Recent research has revealed a dramatic link between the development of spoken language and written language among children, and the importance of language acquisition to basic reading skills. As more research becomes available about how children learn to read, evidence mounts in support of the language basis of reading disabilities. With a strong clinical and research basis, this book provides a broad perspective of language problems associated with reading disabilities. This book compares spoken and written language, noting similarities and differences. The acquisition of reading, reading-related language abilities, and writing disorders are discussed. In the second half of the book, recognized experts in the areas of assessment and remediation of reading and writing disorders discuss the identification, assessment, and treatment of reading and writing disorders. Educators, special educators, speech pathologists, reading and language instructors, curriculum specialists, and parents.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended for young readers!.......2007-09-19
Joey's Aunt Ann is a police officer and through her nephew's eyes the reader learns about a police officer's day, tools of the trade and all the different kinds of police officers there are. We even meet Joey's favorite police dog!
During Aunt Ann's day, she rescues a lost boy and even catches a bear who escaped from the zoo! The photographs are excellent, and the review of terminology with a picture dictionary is proof of the careful preparation that went into this volume.
A New Favorite for an Officer's Niece.......2003-12-13
I am an officer, and was thrilled to find a book featuring a female police officer. In one week it became my niece's favorite book, having me read it over and over to her. She recognized the pictures highlighting special words, and even recognizes the same things in real life. I thought her mom would scream when my niece's favorite word became "badge", and she pointed out every emergency vehicle she saw out on the roads when they went for drives. This book helped my niece become much more verbal, and helps show her that female officers are positive role models, just like me.
