Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful.......2007-05-21

This book was required for a graduate course in visual communications. The book is written in a style of chest-puffing academic balderdash that renders it useless and unreadable. Crummy paper and truly ugly illustrations add to the miasma. I usually keep classroom texts but I'm selling back this one. I won't get much money though because it's so poorly bound that it looks much more used than it really was. Poor unlucky student who buys it.

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2005-09-12

The content of this book is not bad, but the actual quality of product is horrendous.

I have had this text for about a week and the pages have already become unbound. Some of the pages look like they were printed on a photocopier running out of ink. The text is fine, but the graphs look terrible. One would think that a book about design would have put more thought into their own design and production run.

My gripe is simply that this book is too much money for the truly piss-poor physical quality. $76 for a book whose binding became unglued in the first week? $76 for a text whose pages look like they were printed on with an empty toner cartridge? This is a sick joke! Designing Visual Language is a piece of junk and Allyn & Bacon should be ashamed of themselves for having no quality control.

Addendum...
I'm wondering why people have not found this review helpful. Is it because they want to buy a book that is poorly made? If so, I invite you to buy the book. Unless Allyn & Bacon make some serious changes, you'll soon think, "Maybe his review WAS helpful after all!" but by that time you'll be out $76.

4 out of 5 stars Designing Visual Language.......2001-07-14

It reads kind of like a text book, but the information is very good. I am trying to learn about graphic design in my free time and this book has helped me to better understand the basics of visual communication. I have also reciently read "The non-designers design book", which I also recommend. This book starts at the beginning and helps you to understand what you must do, and take into account in order to make something visually pleasing. It has helped me in my design efforts. The book was lent to me and now I plan on buying it, it was so good. I might even look into the rest of the books in the series. (The Allyn & Bacon series in Technical Communication) All in all a good book. I give it 4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Great advice, poor accent.......2004-03-02

These best kept secrets aren't very well kept secrets, because I knew most of them already. I heard some of these secrets from other sources before I heard them from Peter Thomson. However, they are great communication skills and they do work. I just didn't like Peter Thomson's low-pitched English accent and voice very much. I found it hard to concentrate on what he was saying even when I was using some of his listening techniques. I had to turn the volume way up and the bass way down on my car stereo in order to digest what he was saying. Maybe his book would be better for me. Overall, it's a very good audio cd if you can stand to listen to it. (4.5 stars)

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this to improve your communication skills!.......2004-03-01

Peter Thompson gives a comprehensive method of improving your communication skills. He gives 9 "secrets" and expounds on them, giving examples, defining them, and tell you how to improve them. These secrets (not in any particular order) include active listening, using body language, asking questions, and others.

The great thing about it is that it is entertaining and practical. I enjoyed listening to it and then trying to apply them in my life. Any person in business needs these skills, and I would say anyone can benefit from it, since we all communicate with others (well, unless you are a hermit in the mountains I suppose).

He also gives tips on how to better practice these skills and use the audio. Overall, it was a great program.

Book Description

"You are the message." What does that mean, exactly? It means that when you communicate with someone, it's not just the words you choose to send to the other person that make up the message.  You're also sending signals about what kind of person you are--by your eyes, your facial expression, your body movement, your vocal pitch, tone, volume, and intensity, your commitment to your message, your sense of humor, and many other factors.

The receiving person is bombarded with symbols and signals from you. Everything you do in relation to other people causes them to make judgments about what you stand for and what your message is.  "You are the message" comes down to the fact that unless you identify yourself as a walking, talking message, you miss that critical point.

The words themselves are meaningless unless the rest of you is in synchronization.  The total you affects how others think of and respond to you.

5 out of 5 stars A Communication Giant Shares His Speaking Strategies.......2007-06-12

Every time I direct a Presentation Skills seminar or provide communication coaching for executives, I recommend this book. I'll explain why.

Roger Ailes has strong credentials for writing a book about giving speeches. Prior to launching Fox News just over a decade ago, he had served as a speech writer and coach for the first President Bush, Ronald Reagan, Rudy Giuliani, and other public figures. Next, he became a talent scout for TV stations, helping them find anchors who could boost ratings.

I recommend You Are the Message for several reasons. First, the author's credentials I cited. Second, the book's straightforward approach, with clear, simple language.Third, Ailes gives readers a number of gems like these to keep in mind as they prepare speeches:

On being yourself: "You don't have to assume a phony posture. You just have to be you at your best. You already have the magic of communication in you, because nobody can play you as well as you can."

On composure: "If you are uncomfortable with who you are,it will make others uncomfortable too."

On style: "The best communicators I've ever known never changed their style of delivery from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're delivering a speech, having an intimate conversation, or being interviewed on a TV talk show."

On choosing your topic: "If you care, they care."

On energy: "I can correct fifteen communication problems with one ounce of energy."

On enthusiasm: "If the audience knows you care about what you're doing, you can forget about most speaking techniques."

If you're going to buy one book about preparing and delivering speeches, I recommend You Are the Message.

The Complete Communicator: Change Your Communication-change Your Life!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Anecdotal Examples & Tips.......2007-04-25

I had a lot experience with public speaking, but there are some very valuable tips, and he encourages you to refine who you are at the deepest level to exude confidence and charisma when speaking publicly. He also delves into the world of non-verbal communication. This book has excellent stories of famous actors, (albeit from the 50s and 60s) and presidents, with whom Ailes has worked, who had the gift of public speaking, and those who did not.

I especially like the chapter about charisma, and commanding the environment when you are around others. If you are interested in knowing what the best speakers in the world know, then you'll enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great public speaking in one easy lesson?.......2006-07-12

In a single short cassette, containing the bare essence of the book, Roger Ailes distills the advice he has given countless politicians and business people about communicating. His advice is not terribly complex: be yourself, be interesting, be likable. The book title tells it all: you -- the totality of who you are, speech, gestures, tone, persona -- is as important to the mesasge you convey as the words you utter. The book makes perfect sense. But the problem is that speakers often don't know what it is about theiemselves that makes their speech unpersuasive. That's why folks like Ailes are in buisiness, to provide the objective feedback that breaks through the curtain of self-denial that many of us weave around ourselves.

It's interesting to see how Ailes's techniques can be used by the self-interested. If you are the message, then he will teach you how to keep your enemies off balance, and to retain the message that you want to communicate. In Ailes's world, being likable trumps being right. True enough. Sadly, that advice is as useful for the honest business owner making a sale as it is for the crooked politician trying to outfox the media.

Give this book a listen, for whatever it's worth. You might recognize a couple of bad habits in your own style, or find an explanation for why you don't seem to be heard. But I suspect that those with deeply ingrained habits will come away from this book with very little. If it was as easy as Ailes says, we'd all be Great Communicators, like one of Ailes's old clients.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-08

The book is very well written and the content are absolutely useful. A must-have to strengthen your communication and leadership skills.

3 out of 5 stars Read this book before appearing on the O'Reilly Factor.......2005-11-30

I read this book very carefully, particularly the section on talking to the media, and I took every word to heart. I made sure when I went home to greet the throng of reporters waiting for me at my apartment (after I returned home from my temporary Accountant position) that I would take control of the situation and not let the news media bully me around. I immediately addressed the first reporter, simultaneously addressing the question and taking control of the situation by firmly stating "our performance has been stellar, our revenues have increased markedly and so has our marketshare, making our company an even more attractive target for institutional investors..."
My wife then poked her head out the window and said, "Who are you talking to?"
I answered her by saying "I'm addressing the media."
"What Media?" she asked. "You're talking to yourself. You've got to start separating fantasy from reality. You're becoming the Fox News Network."
What outstanding communication skills were displayed by someone who doesn't even speak English (my wife, not Roger Ailes)!

5 out of 5 stars The Only Communications Book You Need!.......2003-05-25

The Complete Communicator is simply the best, most complete communications book it has been my pleasure to read. Simple, direct, concise and compelling in its stories . . . this book embodies its own messages in wonderfully effective ways.

Poor communications is the problem that holds humanity back from making progress more than any other. Think of it as being like a stalled engine that would otherwise pull your car forward at whatever rapid pace you like. Overcome that stall, and progress will be yours.

Because of the importance of improving communications, I have made it a point to read every book about communications that I can find. Most of these books provide an in-depth look at one aspect of communications, while ignoring all of the others. Many times, communications books are not as simple and direct as they could be. Other times, they lack compelling stories.

I can think of few elements of effective communications that are not covered by Dr. Lampton's superb book, with Neuro-Linguistic Programming being the main exception. As a result, a person can read and employ the lessons of The Complete Communicator and have the benefits of reading many dozens of other books. For that reason, I think The Complete Communicator is the best communications book I have read.

Here are the subjects covered:

Person to Person (including self-talk, making connections, getting information, finding prospects for a business, and deepening relationships)

Nonverbal Communication (gestures, appearances, symbolism, and credibility)

Writing (the writing process, things to emphasize and avoid, getting published and improving your writing)

Letter Writing (following up on meetings, complaints, answering complaints, and avoiding errors)

Giving Speeches (the right mental attitude, preparation, expressing yourself naturally, touching the audience and making the right impression)

Listening (what those who are speaking would like you to do, questions to ask, appropriate responses, and ways to improve)

Telephone (good habits, etiquette, succeeding through voice mail, and keeping notes on messages)

Computers (e-mail, Web sites, and Internet connections)

Media (keep it simple and effective, getting booked on broadcasts, handling crises, and letters to the editor)

Many people who try to write such an overview book fail to either properly credit their sources, don't have enough examples or make the book too long. Dr. Lampton avoids all of those snares.

To me, the best writers tell stories that grab me emotionally. Dr. Lampton did that very well with stories from his own experiences. I especially liked one about a telephone message that he read from his Ph.D. advisor.

Book Description

In turbulent times, the ability to communicate with power and purpose becomes a crucial leadership competency. Smart executives realize that leadership communication isn't a matter of "making nice," but a strategic necessity.

Organized around an original model defining the important communication roles a leader must fill, The Leader as Communicator examines roles as diverse as trust-builder and critic, renewal champion and navigator, learning advocate and provocateur. 5 out of 5 stars The "Leader as Communicator" for educational leaders.......2003-09-12

The Leader as Communicator is an invaluable resource for school principals. While written for and about the world of business, this book has direct application to the world of school leadership. The book is readable with clear examples and lists of strategies related to issues central to school leadership in this period of high stakes educational reform. The sections on incorporating the use of data into storytelling, helping employees create meaning for their work, and strategies for building trust are expecially applicable to school principals.

    Book Description

Using dozens of case studies from well-known companies such as General Electric, FedEx, Procter & Gamble, Merck, Boeing, and Intel, Delahaye president and public relations scientist Mark Weiner offers a research-based model for creating and implementing public relations programs that will generate desired results and improve an organization’s ROI. Written as a highly accessible hands-on guide, Unleashing the Power of PR explains how to use market research methods to plan and evaluate public relations programs scientifically. The author explores the benefit of learning to speak to senior executives in a way that will improve communications and ultimately help strengthen PR performance and results. In addition, the book debunks common myths—such as “PR is impossible to measure!”—that undercut the effectiveness of PR and obscure its real value.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for PR and Marketing Professionals.......2007-10-15

Mark Weiner's book is a "must read" for PR, marketing and any communications professional working today. It's chock full of great examples as well as great advice. Mark's research background gives him a unique vantage point -- one we can all learn from. And, his experiences represent real life, not an academic approach. I highly recommend it and keep it on my desk as a resource.

4 out of 5 stars Useful take on measuring the results of PR.......2007-05-18

Although hardly the "contrarian" of his book's title, Mark Weiner correctly identifies two problems common to public relations practitioners: They fail to set objectives, and then they fail to measure what they have accomplished. Weiner explains an uncomplicated way to correct these tendencies. He tells PR managers and their clients why taking a scientific approach can improve the professionalism of PR campaigns and gain respect for them in the marketing world. He uses examples from his own experience to buttress his arguments about the benefits of PR. Occasionally, the book is repetitive, but it is eminently practical. We recommend it to corporate communicators, PR consultants and their clients.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource: Clear, Concise, Complete.......2007-03-21

One of the best books on evaluating the impact of public relations, Unleashing the Power of PR, has been invaluable to me. As a graduate student, I've used it as a resource for a project, and I'll be using it as the foundational resource for my thesis.

Unlike most books about research, which are dry and verbose, Weiner presents his argument and examples for good research in clear, concise prose. There's no bones about it, this is a must read for serious students of PR and professionals alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the C-Suite, Business Leaders & PR Pro's.......2007-01-13

Penned by the founder and president of Delahaye, you may expect Unleashing The Power Of PR to be a thinly veiled sales pitch for his company's research services (like many of the books in the business section today). You'll be pleasantly surprised, however, to find that this is not the case. Instead, you'll discover that Weiner's first book is actually a well researched, compellingly argued case for strengthening the role of public relations in your company's business strategy. In fact, to some extent, Mr. Weiner gives away the core secrets of the media measurement program it took years for his company to perfect.

For those, like me, who learn best by example, Weiner does not disappoint. Pulling from several Delahaye case studies and other sources, Weiner clearly illustrates his main points with relevant, contemporary examples. And, on several occasions, I actually found myself tapping into the dark depths of my fantasy reserves (the energy stores I usually save for Coastal Living feature properties or Mercedes-Benz catalogues), to conjure a vision - one where I transform my small company's marketing efforts into a well-oiled PR machine of my very own, increasing sales by 150%, and positioning POPLOGIX as the preeminent, affordable marketing consulting firm in the US by 2008.

Fantasies aside, this is a recommended read for the contemporary marketing professional but, more importantly, it is a must read for those in the C-Suite and those responsible for their companies PR investment. The return on your PR investment is not only tangible, but also measurable, and can directly impact your business objectives.

There's a lot to like about this work. First, it is particularly well organized. I really like the use of summary questions at the end of each chapter -- one more example of Weiner's easy reading style. And, if you pay attention, you'll find that Weiner is overly generous with thoughtful advice. Just as the title promises, this is a practical guide for creating a world class PR program for your company. Whether you are a start-up or a Fortune 50, Unleashing The Power Of PR may become your "how-to manual" for using PR to help achieve your objectives.

2 out of 5 stars Way too much needless information.......2005-03-06

I agree with one reviewer, in the fact that this book is just WAY too full of useless information. 80% of this book is filler. I couldn't even weed through all of the needless information in order for this book to make an impact on me. I was reading, and kept drifting off, because I simply didn't care about most of what he was saying. I wanted to become a 'Great Communicator'. Instead, I found my patience was being tested! I don't recommend this book for anyone who doesn't want to know every little nit picking detail about certain things like the origins of language, and certain common sense things, which he explains in FULL detail.

    No need for this book.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing Much .......2005-02-11

That's what it is...It's a book that takes a few key concepts and embellished it to reasonable thickness so as to hit the stores looking good. I finished it in 1 1/2 days - skipping many mundane references. In my opinion, the book is probably worth less than 20 pages of useful material.

5 out of 5 stars Learn From the Master!.......2003-06-21

If you need to be a great communicator to succeed in your profession (that includes everybody!), read this book. Learn from the master-communicator himself, Nido Qubein!

3 out of 5 stars Want to be Spoon Feed? This Is YOUR BOOK!.......2001-01-15

The book is constantly on the edge of being all fluff. It lacks depth. This book takes the few important things Qubein chooses to share and ever so gently goes over the details. The author talks directly and softly without being chatty. This would be a very good book for a very young reader that wants to learn about public speaking. For adults, looking for a book to practice speed reading and skimming, the book is a truly outstanding. While it is well written and well organized, there is hardly ever a challenging thought. You should be able to read this book at the speed of light. Speed reading and skimming are valuable skills. Personally, I like books that have content density but are well written. Reading this book slowly would be a waste of time. Nearly all books that are made easy to read had an author that is careful not to say to much. This is one of those books manufactured for money. There was no passion to write it. See some of my two dozen reviews on public speaking for a better selection. How did all the excitement and pretense about Nido Qubein develop, certainly not this book. I am anxious to see him speak. I would like to see what makes him famous.

My biggest new lesson from this book was as follows. So many authors on public speaking try to tell us an audience has one mind or a personality, Qubein says: Everybody in the audience is different, an individual. Audience evaluation is not dividing people into bunches.

No offense intended but Qubein expresses a lot of opinions about the business world that are more pie in the sky than based on experience. American business is not well managed, it is just a whale of a lot better than other businesses around the globe. The media and Qubein want to make chief executive officers out to be Stars. Most CEOs bring a lot of limiting baggage to the job. Qubein is on the right track as to were management style should be headed. Corporate loyalty has been destroyed by shortsighted CEOs and boards of directors. It is going to take a lot more cash in the monthly pay check to hold a good middle management together in the future. Start ups and self employment are sucking the best out of big corporations, because the insensitive Huns are still in control. My opinions are based upon interviewing and tracking top management of hundreds of companies over decades for leading investment firms.

5 out of 5 stars I learned so much from this one book!.......1998-08-22

This book talks about the importance of communication skills. It is full of helpful ideas that will help you and your business. We often don't realize that we spend the majority of our day communicating -- many of us need to improve this skill. This book teaches the importance of simple language while also guiding our words into the next century with the importance of recognizing "politically correct" terminology. This book will help you to communicate more effectively in today's marketplace. It is a fabulous and informative book!
