1 out of 5 stars How To Communicate Better: Mention That You Need The Book.......2001-05-10

This CD is a companion piece to a BOOK on communicating in business. With the book I am sure it would be quite useful but that is not included with this pricey CD set. Here is a sample of how each track is prefaced:

"Unit 8, Practice 1, Page 68. Listen to a model presentation based on the notes in your book."

This was a randomly chosen example. The track chosen was the second CD, second track.

While I can not adequately judge the quality of the combined CD and book without the book it appears to be a useful set. The set is a fairly basic introduction to professional communications targeted at the newly employed, professionals to whom English is a second language and students.

5 out of 5 stars Writing That Works .......2007-10-10

This book is a great reference for doing exactly what the title says," Communicating effectively on the job". We used it as our main text for a business writing class I took and I would never sell this book back after the fact. It's an easy read, clearly explained, and there are several examples as well as a corresponding website. It's the first thing I reach for when I need to write any business correspondence. Good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Writing That Works.......2007-10-10

This appeared to be a brand new, unused book, although it was sold as "almost like new". Great quality, and quick service.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference.......2006-03-10

This book was a great reference for me when I wanted to write a business proposal, memorandums, and a rhetorical analysis. Great grammar tools in the back as well and easy to follow.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2007-03-08

The book is written in a very segmented form. If you are looking for a reference book that you can look up sections for specific presentations or papers, this is the book for you. It is, however, hard to just sit down and read from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Vernon Booth: a classic in scientific writing.......2000-06-16

This book is by one of the first authors to recognise that communication skills are important in science, and that they are a craft that has rules and principles that any student can learn relatively easily. It deserves to be treated as a classic, and should be compulsory reading for any student of the life sciences.

I can recall reading it with much interest during my PhD in the 1980's, when it was about the only work available in this field, and various biochemical societies in the UK made it available to students. Much of the advice on straightforward communication style is still extremely valid today. In the later 80's and 90's, the field of writing skills took off, and now most University bookshops have several shelves of books on writing skills and how to write a thesis. Booth's book is short, direct, and the advice is very practical. Read it!

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2002-01-02

This is an excellent book that covers many aspects of technical writing from memos, proposals, progress reports, and research reports, to citing references, resumes, and cover letters. However, the book is a bit dry at times (understandably), and is not perfectly organized.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for aspiring literate engineers.......2000-03-26

This book is very useful for engineering students or practising engineers who wish to possess excellent technical communication/writing skills. It will put to shame any engineer who claims that scientific mind can't be expected to be too literate. It is so comprehensive, touching upon all aspects of technical writing, such as writing to different audiences, techniques of researching, writing, editing and even how to obtain the most visually pleasing layout for your technical reports. Not only that, it includes some essential information like formats of reports and bibliography. Another big plus is it includes recent writing techniques, like electronic documents. Although a very large chunk of the book deals with technical writing, the authors have also discussed Oral Presentation in one of the last few chapters. I am using this book in my university technical writing course this semester, and I must say that I have benefited tremendously. It's really a must for everyone who deals with presentation of technical information in their work / daily life. And in the case of engineers, doesn't that "everyone" include all of us?

This book has contributed well to the professional growth of my technical writing intern. I assign her a chapter or two to read weekly, plus assignments from the writing projects at the end of each chapter. It provides an active, results-oriented training program well suited for the beginner writer.

Practical rather than overly academic, this book also includes good material for the experienced technical writer. I'm particularly impressed by the chapter on collaborative writing. It's nice to see a real-world technical communications book!
