Book Description
This book helps readers bridge the gap between simply memorizing or blindly accepting information and the greater challenge of critical analysis and synthesis. It teaches them to respond to alternative points of view and develop a solid foundation for making personal choices about what to accept and what to reject as they read and listen. Chapter titles include: The Benefit of Asking the Right Questions; What are the Issue and the Conclusion?; What Are the Reasons?; What Are the Value Conflicts and Assumptions?; Are There Any Fallacies in the Reasoning?; How Good Is the Evidence: Intuition, Appeals to Authority, and Testimonials?; and What Reasonable Conclusions Are Possible?. For any critical reader who wants to enhance and develop better reasoning skills in order to make rational decisions.

ok.......2007-09-23
did not come very quickly--wasn't even sent out until about 5 days after I placed the order. in very good condition though.
Great book.......2007-09-05
This book is a must have for every rhetoric class! Easy to read and understand, best tool for a student.
Good questions. Very helpful indeed........2007-04-03
I strongly agree with the author on pg 13, that "by the end of the book, you should know when and how to ask these questions productively (elaborated through individual chapters):-
1. What are the issues and the concclusions?
2. What are the ressons?
3. Which words or phrases are ambiguous?
4. What are the value conflicts and assumptions?
5. What are the descriptive assumptions?
6. Are there any fallacies in the reasoning?
7. How good is the evidence?
8. Are there rival causes?
9. Are the statistics deceptive?
10. What significant information is omitted?
11. What reasonable conclusions are possible?
Of course, a compilation of good questions doesnt qualify it to be a good book. Indeed, the samples and stories well illustrate the principles and concepts behind. The discussions on various fallacies are marvelous, including:-
Ad hominem: An attack, or an insult, on the person, rather than directly addressing the person's reasons.
Slipperly Slope: Making the assumption that a proposed step will set off an uncontrollable chain of undesirable events, when procedures exist to prevent such a chain of events.
Hasty Generalization: A person draws a conclusion about a large group of based on experience with only a few members of the group.
Causal Oversimplification: Explaining an event by relying on causal factors that are insufficient to account for the event or by overemphasizing the role of one or more of these factors.
Confusion of Cause and Effect: Confusing the cause with the effect of an event or failing to recognise that the two events may be influencing each other.
Neglect of a common cause: Failure to recognize that two events may be related because of the effects of a common third factor.
Post hoc: Assuming that a particular event, B, is caused by another event, A, simply because B follows A in time.
............
In short, an excellent food for thought. Highly recommended!
p.s. I like the following story on pg 137 the most.
"After carefully conditioning a flea to jump out of a box following the presentation of a loud noise, the researcher removed the first pair of legs to see what effect this had. Observing that the flea was still able to perform his task, the scientist removed the second pair of legs. Once again noting no difference in performance, the researcher removed the final pair of legs and found that the jumping behaviour no longer occurred. Thus, the investigator wrote in his notebook, "When all the legs of a flea have been removed, it will no longer be able to hear."
Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking .......2007-03-09
An excellent book on the subject of reflective thought and criticism. Moreover, this book was more concise and illustrative than others I have read on the subject. This book includes many helpful case examples of short one and two paragraph essays which are analyzed critically for assumptions and fallacies in reasoning. If you needed to buy (and keep) just one book on the subject of critical thinking - this one should be it.
A balanced and informative guide.......2006-08-21
I found Asking the Right Questions (ARQ) to be a very balanced and thorough approach to critical thinking. I am an electrical engineer by profession... I am well-regarded by my peers as an careful thinker; however, I have found myself frustrated at times when discussing controversial issues with friends... some lines of thought don't ring true, but are nonetheless hard to refute. After reading ARQ, I found that these dilemmas are frequently either the result of not agreeing on the definitions of ambiguous terms (e.g. oppression, sexism, racism) or on some logical fallacy that was used. This has made a quite difference in my ability to discern the issues at hand.
ARQ uses a systematic list of questions to review the proposed thesis. These questions are designed to help you understand their conclusion, and evaluate their supporting evidence. Throughout the book, you are encouraged to set your own biases aside in favor of rationally evaluating the evidence. Furthermore, you receive some brief instruction on typical logical fallicies. In particular, Ad hominem attacks (i.e. attacks on the character of participants) are addressed; however, blatant character references are just beginning of an ad-hominem attack. Many times discussions get sidetracked by implicit accusations about a person's character. As an example, this statement (greatly simplified here) was used on me in the past, "you couldn't possibly be able to think critically, because your spiritual convictions make you biased." Until I read ARQ, I had a hard time realizing that this is actually a diversionary tactic used to sidetrack the discussion. If I accept this "evidence", the issue now becomes my credibility, instead of discussing my actual position on the issue.
Another good point the authors make is that that the mere existence of a logical fallicy should be not used as a means to halt discussion.
Finally, this book doesn't try to give you the "right answers" to controversial issues. They teach you how to find those answers on your own. In many cases, there are no right or wrong answers... simply a difference in the core values of the individuals.
I have been very pleased with the thoughtful approach that ARQ uses. I believe that every high-school and college student should be required to read it.

Customer Reviews:
Great perspective on questionnaire fundamentals.......2006-11-15
This edition offers insight about the building blocks of questionnaire development, and more importantly, getting to the right answers. A good focus on the fundamentals and a valuable resource.
The definitive questionnaire design book.......2006-08-16
This book is a tremendous resource for any social science research methodology course. It should be used as a stand-alone text for a questionnaire design course or as core reading material for a general research methodology class (undergraduate or graduate). As a social scientist, I have used it to successfully create web-based questionnaires that have received great response rates, which I believe are a direct result of the depth and breadth of the knowledge conveyed in the book. In addition, the text itself is easy to understand, interesting, and intellectually stimulating (qualities that are lacking in many other questionnaire design books).
Dry and Outdated.......2006-03-02
I found this book to be a bit dry and behind the times, especially in terms of using the Web for surveys. There's also not much about polling. Unfortunately, that was my main reason for buying it. It is one of the few books out there about surveys and polls and there is some helpful information, but I will have to look elsewhere for my needs.

Customer Reviews:
If you ask questions professionally, READ this book!.......2001-07-06
People tend to see asking questions as an intuitive, conversational means of communication. Wrong. As someone in the professional survey field (SuperSurvey.com), I see a lot of questions every day -- good and bad. Some questions are so poorly written that the responses actually reduce the quality of the survey results.
Sudman & Bradburn's book, although originally written for the pre-Internet age, helps people to learn the art and science of writing good questions. The most helpful part of the book is the collection of actual, concrete suggestions for how to word certain types (e.g. threatening/nonthreatening) of questions, mixed with examples of the themes in practice. In addition to designing and wording the actual questions, intelligent strategies for survey instrument design are included. These strategies are mostly pre-Internet, but can be adapted to the constraints and freedoms of Internet surveying.
(Surprisingly, though, even today polls and surveys constantly violate the principles in this book. Perhaps a good read alongside _Asking Questions_ would be _How to Lie With Statistics_).
_Asking Questions_ lets your surveys and questionnaires benefit from decades of social science and opinion research. Reading it once back in college probably isn't good enough: everyone who does surveys professionally should keep a copy at his desk.
A survey researcher from Missoula, Montana.......2000-09-09
This book has been an indispendible reference for professional survey researchers since it was written. Asking Questions provides questionnaire writers with extremely useful design guidance and checklists. Most importantly, the book is very easy to read and use. Sudman and Bradburn's status as leading survey methodologists adds to the book's credability.
The book is somewhat dated. It's authors were pioneers in the movement to examine the cognitive processes that respondents use to answer questions. Much has been learned since. Unfortunately, due to the recent death of Seymour Sudman, an update of this book is unlikely.
The longevity of this book is remarkable and extremely well earned. The guidance it provides is as useful today as it was in 1982.
A good book on survey question design.......2000-04-18
I was looking for a book on improving survey questions that provided information on reducing bias in survey wording and structure. This book was a great help to me and exceeded my expectations. The book addresses pre-survey issues, specific question-type issues, and survey structure (ordering of questions) issues in a very organized format with plenty of clear examples. The only down-side to the book is that it was written back in '82. I'm wondering if there is a more current version of an equivalent book. I wasn't able to find one.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent How-To resource.......2006-05-26
Good interviewing skills are essential for freelance writers. Ken Metzler's book, Creative Interviewing: The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions, is an excellent source for learning how to conduct an interview and improving your interviewing techniques.
Did you know that most interviews happen in ten stages? Mr. Metzler explains, "Face-to-Face interviews usually, though not always, run through ten stages. Four stages occur before you even meet your respondent. The success of the six subsequent ones depends largely on how well you accomplish the first four."
Do you know what the ten interview stages are? Here's the list from Creating Interviewing:
1. Defining the purpose of the interview
2. Conducting background research
3. Requesting an interview appointment
4. Planning the interview
5. Meeting your respondent: breaking the ice
6. Asking your first questions
7. Establishing an easy rapport
8. Asking the bomb
9. Recovering from the bomb
10. Concluding the interview
Based on this ten stage list, Mr. Metzler details all the ins and outs to creating and conducting interviews. From his text you'll learn what makes for a constructive interview, details on accomplishing the Ten Stages, how to form and ask questions, find sources, and more. There's even a chapter on how to be the interviewee, which will hopefully be important to all of us someday.
Creative Interviewing is written in clear, concise prose, with a pleasant sense of humor thrown into the mix. Mr. Metzler also provides plenty of case studies and anecdotes to help you learn by example for your own interviews.
If you're serious about improving your interviewing skills you'll want to add Creating Interviewing to your writer's bookshelf.
Required reading for serious journalism students.......2003-08-24
This book shows you how to conduct just about every type of interview. It also explains concepts, helps the journalist devise a plan and more importantly provides key information on how to cope with the "difficult interview." In my opinion, "The Writer's Guide to Gathering Information by Asking Questions: Creatinve Interviewing," by Ken Metzler should be required reading for serious journalism students everywhere.
"The need for interviewing skills is by no means confined to newspaper writers," according to the author. And I agree. The corporate world is always interviewing...they are always on the look for new talent. In many cases, they need to be better than simply ask, "where do you want to be in five years."
Believe or not there truly are many typical errors you want to avoid when interviewing. To this end, you will find a healthy discussion on how to avoid mistakes here. Moreover, this book will help you navigate the tricky interview process. Chapters two and three are terrific. Chapter two outlines the ten stages of the interview. And chapter three covers the conversational dynamics of interviewing. This book even includes a chapter on interviewing excercises.
All in all this book is a valuable tool for everyone interested in making journalism a profession. The gathering of information in journalism is primarily done by oral means. Consequently, it makes sense to seek the knowledge of a book that helps you control an interview and how to handle sensitive issues. Highly recommended.

This compact paperback is filled with information, from defining your interviewing problem, anatomy of interview, dynamics, probing, and strategy. The book contains actual interviews, with exercises, special problems. Guide is offered for newsbeat reporting to broadcast television and personality interviewing. A wonderful, thorough, guide to creative interviewing. ....MzRizz.
Tactics And Strategies To Make The Most Out Of An Interview.......2001-12-02
I am not a writer nor journalist but a person in the field of marketing. Since journalists are the experts at extracting information from people they are interviewing, I thought this could help me in my field. In marketing, it is necessary for me to understand why people buy or have an affinity with a certain product or person. I interview people in the same manner journalists do but with a slightly different objective in mind. I explore the person's mind to find an unkown reason for buying a certain product just as journalist wants to discover something never revealed before to the public about an actor or politician. This book provided me with many new insights about the person being interviewed, their reasons for opening up to the interviewer and how to conduct the interview in an organised manner while also being flexible when things start to lead astray from my original plans. This book has helped me in many ways. I highly recommend it to business people to read as well.
the importance of the interview.......2000-05-15
the importance of interviewing and its 5 wh questions
Book Description
This text covers basic research issues and both quantitative and qualitative approaches to communication research. The guiding principle of the text is that methodological choices arise from one’s research questions and hypotheses; thus, the text focuses first on the research process, and then discusses the methodological tools for understanding and conducting basic communication research projects. In the second edition, every chapter includes examples based on research from 2002 and thereafter, and revisions improve the balance of quantitative and qualitative research perspectives as well as of data collection and analytical procedures.
Customer Reviews:
Solid undergraduate text.......2005-11-28
This new edition is a solid undergraduate text that covers both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. It strength is in its accessibility, clarity, and structure, as it won't overwhelm the beginning Communication student. Each chapter has objectives and a summary and there are separate chapters outlining wrtiting the research document for both quantitative and qualitative research. Has good examples and sidebars. Suitable for a thesis or introduction to research methods class. Graduate studnets might find it overly simplistic, although it may be a useful refresher for them as well.

Book Description
Today's children hear about sex all the time-on television, in the movies, and from their friends. But what they hear and see does not always give a healthy or even an accurate view of sexuality.
This unique book, the only one of its kind for preteens, uses a question-and-answer format to offer straightforward information on a wide variety of subjects that often concern and mystify young people.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for Parents and Preteens.......2005-08-24
Joanna Cole gives straight answers for preteens' questions concerning sex. Parents and child should read the chapters together. The book will open lines of communications on this very important subject.
Could it get any worse!?d.......2002-08-02
This was a pretty dumb book I already knew all of this stuff!
Not the best choice........2001-02-11
I bought this, along with several similar books, for my 11 year-old son. The Q&A format of this book made it easy to read, but many topics were handled in a clinical, vague manner and spent way too much time on trivial subjects (e.g., a whole chapter on "Crushes.") I actually checked the copyright, to see if it was written in the '50's. (It's 1988.) I was very troubled by the section, "What Happens if a Young Girl Gets Pregnant?" It ignored the boy's role & responsibility, and glossed over the topic with vague statements such as: "Her whole life will change, and not usually for the better." And, "She may feel upset for a long time afterward." There's even a section, "Why Would a Girl Let Herself Get Pregnant?" which suggests "Sometimes a girl secretly wants to get pregnant..." The section ends with: "The surest way to prevent pregnancy is not to have intercourse." I found a much better book for my son: "What's Going on Down There." Silly title, but much more thorough, balanced and practical.
Simple, well written but best for adolescents..........2000-11-16
I bought this book hoping to have an early broad conversation about sexuality with my 9 year old boy and found this book to be too detailed for someone that young. The illustrations are over-simplified and may be good for younger kids, but it doesn't jibe with the text which is more complex and biologically, fact-based. A great book- but I found I have to leave it on the shelf for another year or so. I don't think most 9-year olds will get this stuff yet so I'd advise you to hold off buying this unless you have an exceptionally mature child of this age. I'm sure it will be an excellent reference at 10 or 11.
Great Info, Too Many Pictures.......2000-08-18
As a mother and a teacher, I appreciate Cole's sensitivity and frankness with a difficult subject. I am afraid, however, that the adolescent audience for whom the book is intended will be distracted by the many graphic illustrations. This is unfortunate because the book has many good things to say. I especially appreciated the chapters on AIDS/STDs and sexual abuse. Children need this information. I would like to see this book reprinted with fewer illustrations. Descriptions will often suffice as children have vivid imaginations!

Customer Reviews:
That simple - that complex.......2006-04-26
Sid Walker's book hits the mark when it comes to how agents/producers can increase their sales by asking a few, RIGHT questions. Having been in the insurance industry for over 20 years, I have seen too many agents walk past a sale that could be a lifelong policy for their clients, if only they would understand the true value of life insurance - helping their clients fulfill their dreams - whether around to fulfill them in person, or through the legacy funded by life insurance. Aren't the client's dreams worth the agent's effort and taking the risk to uncover the client's feelings?
Getting at the heart of why a client would want the fulfillment of their dreams should not be something to avoid - quite the contrary - it is something to be embraced and used to its fullest potential. It is a win-win for the agent and client.
Great job, Sidney!
A 'MUST READ" for All Sales People.......2006-04-25
After having been in insurance and financial sales for over 25 years, Sid's book unlocked what I believe was the key missing link to effectively building long-term relationships with clients. This easy to read book contains some of the very finest training on how to become a skilled interviewer and help prospects and clients epxress their feelings about thier financial goals and dreams. After one reading any new or veteran sales person will find their interviewing skills at a much higher level and their resulting interviews producing the kind of strong relationships that agents AND CLIENTS stirve to achieve.
This is a must read for all new and veteran sales people who plan on long term successs in this industry.
A Quick Refresher course.......2000-07-19
"Double your Sales" is a quick read, with examples of verbage to use to draw out clients or prospects into buying. Mr. Walker is convinced that people won't buy "unless it FEELS right to them." A good additon to your arsenal of sales books, but for 100 pages, it's hard to justify the high price tag for this paperback. The same material can be found elsewhere.
