The world is divided into two types of people: those who wince when they see the words Canadian geese in print, and those who don't. If you are the former, or if you are the latter working for the former, the The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual provides invaluable assistance when you need to get your Canada geese all in a row. Countless newspapers and other publications base their style guides on this manual. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include issues of spelling, punctuation (there is no period in Dr Pepper), grammar, abbreviation, capitalization (Popsicle and Dumpster are, tollhouse cookies aren't), hyphenation (none, surprisingly, in ball point pen), and frequently misused words. There are also longer discussions of things such as Arabic names, chess notation, weather terms, and religious movements. Plus you'll find separate sections on sports writing, business writing, libel, and copyright.

Book Description

Fully revised and updated, the essential handbook for all writers, editors, students, and public relations specialists.

More people write for the Associated Press than for any newspaper in the world, and writers have bought more copies of The AP Stylebook than of any other journalism reference. With this essential guide in hand, any writer can learn to communicate with the clarity and professionalism for which the Associated Press is famous. Fully revised and updated, this edition contains over 5,000 A to Z entries--including more than 50 new ones--laying out the AP's rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation, and word and numeral usage. Comprehensive and easy to use, The AP Stylebook provides the facts and references necessary to write accurately about the world today: correct names of countries and organizations, Internet language and search techniques, language to avoid, common trademarks, and the unique guidelines for business and sports reporting. The final word on media law, The AP Stylebook also includes an invaluable section dedicated to crucial advice on how writers can guard against libel and copyright infringement. The veritable "journalist's bible," this is the one reference that working writers cannot afford to be without.

With more than 50 new entries plus updates of more than 100 others, The AP Stylebook includes such features as:
* An A to Z listing of guides to capitalization, abbreviation, spelling, numerals, and usage
* Internet guidelines
* Sports guidelines and style
* Business guidelines and style
* A guide to punctuation
* Supreme Court decisions regarding libel law
* Summary of First Amendment rules
* The right of privacy
* Copyright guidelines
* Proofreaders' marks

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't write without it.......2007-07-28

Also know as the AP style guide, this book should be every copywriter's and journalist's bookshelf. This is the definitive guide to punctuation, grammar and writing style for magazine and newspaper articles as well as most business writing. And it is vastly different from the style of writing most of us learned in school, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are thinking about writing for magazines or newspapers, or starting a copywriting business, you absolutely must get a copy of this.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to AP Style.......2007-07-07

I bought this book because I had a client that used the AP Style in their marketing communication and all outgoing documentation had to be reviewed using the AP Style. Being a technical writer, I had not used the AP Style before. Now I have a better understanding of why words are used the way they are in a newspaper. However, about 20% of the AP Style does not apply to technical writing.

4 out of 5 stars AP Stylebook.......2007-05-29

A must have for all print designers. Great reference material for graphic and web designers.

4 out of 5 stars Wanna be a reporter? Duh........2007-02-25

If you aspire to have any sort of career in print or online journalism, you should not need a review to tell you that you need this book. Duh.

However, I am going to give this book only four stars because AP needs to stop being losers and end the silliness of capitalizing the word "Internet" or writing "website" as "Web site." It's dumb.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-01-16

This is a great book for anyone, from an aspiring writer to the accomplished journalist. The information within is very valuable and very well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the One-star Reviews.......2007-09-15

First of all, you should ignore all the one-star reviews of this book. Those reviews criticize the MLA, not the book. The book itself is really good. One of my English professors recommended it to our class. She also said that every English major should have a copy of it. I had always used Diana Hacker's book in other classes. After she recommended it, I decided to check it out at the bookstore. After skimming through it, I decided to buy it. It was so much easier to follow than Hacker's book. I will use it in the future. Gibaldi devotes an entire chapter just to plagiarism (and how to avoid it).

The author refers to the "microcomputer" and suggests you consider purchasing a modem and getting to know your library's card catalog. Sure, it's always good to choose the right adviser, but any book can tell you that. Get something more recent.

As someone who works privately with students, helping them with dissertations and theses, I highly recommend this book. When students call me in regard to assistance with their dissertation or thesis, I recommend that they buy this book and use it as an ongoing reference. As the title states, the information contained in this book anticipates and answers many of the questions that students have about the dissertation process, from proposal to completion. It is the most comprehensive guideline that I have come across in recent years.

Book Description

Featuring an engaging, direct writing style and inquiry-based approach, The Curious Researcher stresses that curiosity is the best reason for investigating ideas and information.

KEY BENEFIT:

Offering a wide variety of examples from writers, this popular guide shows that good research and lively writing do not have to be mutually exclusive. Readers are encouraged to find ways to bring their writing to life, even though they are writing with “facts.” Full explanations of the technical aspects of writing and documenting source-based papers help students develop sound research and analysis skills.

Topics include information on selecting a research topic, the latest information on Internet research, advice on structuring a research paper, and full treatment of MLA and APA citation formats.

this was a great guide and handbook for steps on how to write/research from begining to end on a research paper.

4 out of 5 stars Curious DeVry Researchers.......2004-11-18

This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a section of ENGL/135 students at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is based on the students' experiences in using Ballenger's book as a textbook during the first three weeks of the class.

We give this book an ecstatic thumbs up! Here are just a few examples of its excellencies:

* Includes good examples.
* Focuses specifically on formal research papers.
* Provides up-to-date guidelines for both internet and library research.
* Presents the reader with a step-by-step guide to writing research papers.
* Is easy to read and well formatted.
* Demystifies its subject.
* Maintains a friendly tone.
* Contains comprehensive instructions on both APA and MLA formats.
* Explains exactly how to format footnotes, citations, and references.
* Discusses ways to find a topic and includes a large list of examples.
* Helps ESL students to master the complexities of formal English writing.

Our only suggestion for improvement: we'd like to see Ballenger elaborate more on such matters as punctuation and grammar in research papers.

Overall, we have found this book to be very useful in our ENGL/135 composition class.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Writing Research for College ever Written.......2004-05-23

Forget all the reviews beneath that say this book isn't for college students. These stodgy English Professor types are exactly the audience who are guarenteed to hate a book that promotes and teaches, passion, curiousity, and most important, voice in student research papers. For the rest of us the Curious Researcher is a breath of fresh air. Bruce Ballenger comes at us from a writers, not a teachers point of view. He illustrates how to transform what is traditionally known in the trade as a "terminal paper" into an exploration, brimming with life, fact and literary panache.
He also manages to squeeze in all the fundamental research skills and gives teachers exercizes on how to teach them. Any teacher who sees this book as a "huge waste of time," (see review below) might want to take their cue from UCLA basketball coach John Wooden. "No one is too old to learn the fundamentals." Ballenger brilliantly teaches the fundamentals of teaching voice in non-fiction writing and demonstrates his lessons on each page throught the example of his own writing. This is the Best Book on Research Writing for College or High School ever written. Bravo Bruce!

3 out of 5 stars Good for middle or high school, but not for college students.......2004-02-29

My 200-level college English class is using this as a textbook, and I've been very disappointed with it. It's simply not a college level text. While it is very user-friendly, the material it covers is all stuff a student should have learned long before college. Things like how to write a thesis statement, organize a paper, use libraries and the Internet, evaluate sources for quality, take notes, incorporate quotes into a paper, avoid plagiarism, properly cite sources, use appropriate word choice and sentence variety, and the standards of proper English conventions should all have been taught in middle school / junior high. At this level, the book has been largely useless to me, as it only covers things I already know. The exercises, too, are redundant of little help.

This book would, however, be an excellent text to use in middle school, or even high school. The skills Ballenger teaches here are important, but they should be taught much earlier than college. The format is easy to read, and much less intimidating than many other such books. It's not at all "dry" like so many texts. Ballenger makes frequent use of nice analogies to help the reader understand how certain elements of a paper will help it or harm it. He also gives examples from his students' own papers, which can be very useful. Included in the book are references to valuable Internet research sites, and appendices that cover proper MLA and APA citations. If used earlier in school, this book would be a valuable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Research Text.......2003-11-08

Easy to teach from and the students say that they both learn from it and enjoy it. Most intend to keep the book to refer back to. It is my first choice for a research writing class text.

Book Description

In the new edition of WRITING WITH STYLE, the authors continue to provide students with guidance on how to prepare a research paper using APA style. The book applies a "learning through modeling" approach, which is in keeping with the social work profession's literature. It is replete with exercises that reinforce and instill the basic elements of the APA style. Students can fill in the exercises directly in the book and thereby develop their writing skills.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good guide but not worth the $27 I paid........2006-10-13

This information written in the Preface would have been helpfeul before I purchased this book. (Social workers should not expect this book to replace the Publication Manual. They should be aware that this is one of several reference books that belong on their desk when they write. Somtimes the transition from first-year English composition classes to social work classess leaves students confused because these first-year classes tend to be taught with emphasis on the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. In these courses students learn how to organize a coherent paragraph, how to develop a thesis statement, and how to write an essay or a library research paper in generic (MLA-based)style. This is a useful start, but it does not enhance students' technical writing skills when it comes to using APA gudelines. They must now learn to write using APA Style, which includes not only rules made excilict in the Publication Manual but also other conventions that constitute the unwritten rules of the APS style. For example, rather than write about what other authors "said" or "believed", they should concentrate on what the author "found or "reported". Also, the title of an article should not be mentioned in a literature review, and passive voice may sometimes be used.)

5 out of 5 stars very helpful guide to dissertation writing.......2007-10-01

This book is great reference for dissertation writing, particularly in the field of education. While it doesn't replace a great advisor and a group of colleagues, it does provide a good overview of the structure of a dissertation and some hints on making it through with your sanity in-tact. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-02-25

It will definitely help me overcome the obstacles I know I'll find along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Thesis and Dissertation Support.......2006-09-29

Dr. Roberts seems to know exactly what to say to the graduate student who is about to commence a journey which can may make or break an individual. She write with candor and integrity of what to expect and what to be cautious about.
It is written in a non-formal and a non-textbook manner with just enough humor to keep one interested in the subject matter.
There seems to be a sense that regardless of the subject matter, which an individual is writing about, there are specific steps and procedures to the format of a thesis or dissertation.
A book well worth keeping in your graduate library.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-05-17

I have looked at quite a few dissertation books and this is the best one I have seen so far. The book provides practical advice that is encouraging but also gives the student a swift kick in the [...] to get the process completed. I like that the first two chapters provide some motivational information about the habits and personality resolutions one needs to make to complete the dissertation process.

Some of the chapters such as how to use a computer or do an online reference search are not so useful, but overall the book is good.

I also like the no nonsense advice on issues like choosing a topic or working with your committee. Although I am at the beginning of the process, I am looking forward to using the Dissertation Checklist in the back of this book to help me structure my first draft.
