Book Description
You can save time and money and improve work performance throughout your organization--with the help of job aids. Job aids make it easier to perform tasks by providing access to information, procedures, policies, and examples. These sources of information make it easier to perform tasks by providing access to information, examples, policies, and procedures. Paired with training and supervisory support, job aids play a key role in introducing new work technologies and systems. The authors clearly instruct you how to create seven job aid formats:
- step job aids
- worksheets
- arrays
- decision tables
- flow charts
- checklists
- combination job aids.
Learn about every step of job aid implementation:
- Identifying the problem
- Choosing the format and the medium
- Preparing the job aid draft
- Piloting the job aid
- Making revisions to the job aid
- Managing the job aid
With this guide, you will:
- Establish new and expanded ways of defining job aids
- Offer approaches that broaden opportunities to employ job aids
- Present strategies to improve the quality of the job aids that are developed...and much more!
The authors reinforce each job aid with a case study that shows just how the job aid can be used. Without job aids, employees often don't know where to find information. They can waste their own time--and the time of others--seeking answers. With effective job aids in place, employees will stop wondering where to go: the job aids will provide the information they need.
Job aids save huge amounts of time and money. Any trainer or manager seeking to improve organizational effectiveness should look no further--A Handbook of Job Aids is the most comprehensive job aid source available.

Training Is Not the Only Solution.......2001-11-01
Training takes many forms and not all training requires a formal classroom or complex computer simulations. For some performance requirements, a job aid is the most efficient and accurate way to obtain the human performance you require. Allison Rossett and Jeannette Gautier-Downes have created a clear and easy-to-follow guide to job aids. This instructionally-sound approach breaks job aids down into meaningful categories (information, procedural and coaching) and presents numerous examples that demonstrate just how easy it is to create a just-in-time solution to your performance problem. Using the very job aid approach they teach, these authors guide you through every aspect of job aid creation using examples from a variety of content areas. You will be guided to 1) select content appropriate for job aids and 2) avoid selecting inappropriate content.
Dr. Rossett is on the faculty at San Diego State University. She has created a site that is a companion to this book. (...) This site contains more examples and exercises designed to hone your job aid creation skills.

Where You Want To Go For One-Stop Presentation Skills.......2006-06-26
I've known Diane DiResta's work for many years. She is the "Queen of Presentations". Her book provides a no-nonsense approach to the art of clear, precise and meaningful communications to audiences large and small. I've taught Presentation Skills courses myself for over 25 years in the corporate world and I refer to her works in almost a "biblical" sense. She knows what she's saying. She's been there, she's done that! Great primer.
A practical and useful book.......2006-03-20
Another reviewer said it is not often that a book lives up to its title: especially with words like 'power' and 'pizzaz' as part of the promise. This book certainly did for me. It is not full of jargon. It is not full of pictures and distraction. What it does have it clear ideas, simply given that you can immediately put into practise.
The book covers basics like dealing with nerves as well as advanced issues like presenting with an interpreter. This makes it a great choice for all levels of presenter.
A great addition to anyone's library for a small dollar purchase.
General Advices About Public Speech.......2006-01-27
The book is about how you should prepare to public speech. It talks about how to setup a stage, how to work with a michrophone, how to walk in a stage and the known advices as 'know your audience' and 'rehearse'.
I think this might be good reading if you lack any clue about the process but for people that need to improve their presentation skills it's not worth. Also there's almost nothing on tips for preparing slides (the most common media, I think).
The author keeps giving infinite acronyms where she wants to work on topics (almost all topic groups gets its own) and it's really annoying.
Great Clarity Brought to Fundamentals.......2005-06-08
I have read hundreds and hundreds of books on how to give presentations. Diresta adds to the genre through sheer force of simple clarity. She cuts through the clutter and helps people focus on the fundamentals they need to go from a poor to good speaker and from a good to great presenter. This book should be in the library of any serious student of speaking.
Knockout's a knockout with my clients.......2005-04-16
Having been in the communication skill business the past 15 years myself, I am glad to have such a good and user-friendly reference as this book to recommend to my clients - from all backgrounds and industries. It covers every area, and then some.
I have a shelf full of other presentation skill books, but Knockout Presentations is still the one I reference and pass along. Should be on every business person's desk, in libraries, and in college book stores. Good bang for the buck.

Good basics, but needs updating.......2000-07-20
This book does a good job covering the many basics of making an effective presentation, including dealing with anxiety, personal appearance, planning and preparation. However, it needs to be updated to reflect the many changes in presentation technology (and technology in general) since 1993 that are available to the presenter.
For example, to quote from page 55, "CD-ROM Players--These 'read only' players (you can't record onto them from your own computer, yet!) can hold a gigantic amount of information. Some disks contain an entire encyclopedia. These devices can store color photographs, video clips, sound clips, huge data bases and other types of information that require a lot of memory. There is new technology available that will allow you to take a photograph, have it transferred to a CD-ROM disk and then bring it up on your computer screen." What next, phones without wires? Overall a good book on the subject of preparing for and delivering presentations as long as you're not looking for any tips on PowerPoint or technology-based presentations.
Concise and to the point, good for a beginner.......1999-03-02
I would say if you never put a presentation together, or looking for few ideas in putting a presentation together, this book is for you. The material is concise and gives good backgound on how to put a professional presentation together. I recommend it to a beginning managers and executives that want to evalute their presentation mode.

An "oldie but a goodie".......2000-05-12
EVen though the advance of computers has created additional types of visual media, the principals Raines presents here still apply. Great info on Why to Use Visuals, When to Use Visuals, Planning Visuals (concept, design, color, use of text and typography) and a huge section on the various types of media and how to use them to your advantage as a presenter. I've used this book for years -- personally and for presentation skills basics. Glad to see it's still available.
Book Description
The visual elements in a workplace have a profound effect on its employees. Most organizations, however, do not recognize the power of design, art, sculpture, and graphics to create the vibrancy and energy that can drive productivity and innovation. Seeing Is Believing explains how to use these elements to improve communications, connect individual tasks to organizational goals, and greatly enhance employee commitment and job satisfaction. It shows how the system of Visual Management:* replaces "information overload" with information sharing and effective workflow* translates critical requirements into visual stimuli that cannot be ignored* resonates particularly well with "the MTV generation"* enhances the way customers, other stakeholders, and the public relate to the organizationSeeing Is Believing shows how organizations of all types are adopting VM and lays out a roadmap for successful implementation.
Customer Reviews:
A powerful idea poorly presented.......2006-06-22
Seeing Is Believing describes visual management, a "system that reinforces tried-and-true management principles and techniques through the use of fine arts techniques." That is, the book explains why and how one should use visual artifacts to communicate the organization's vision, mission, and values (and gain employee support of the aforementioned), create a customer-focused environment, communicate performance goals and progress, and provide a rewarding work environment for employees, among other things. Examples of visual management include bulletin boards, posters, art works, and war rooms (entire rooms devoted to such displays). The arrangement of furniture in the workplace and the general décor also play into visual management.
The first three chapters of the book are concerned with defining visual management, explaining why it is important, and where it came from. If you ask me, the chapters could have been condensed into one. Chapter two spends an unnecessary amount of time trying to convince the reader that we have become an increasingly visual society (duh!), citing examples such as computer interfaces and the video displays on cell phones.
One particularly amusing example involves comparing classic movies with the movies of today. The authors maintain that while classic movies used a "careful and often time-consuming process of detailed character development", today's movies rely on fast-paced and complex special effects to tell the story and develop the characters. Personally, I would argue the majority of movies today involve no character development whatsoever (and that's why good movies are few and far between nowadays).
The authors then go on to claim that this visually-oriented technology boom has forced us to become visual learners, as if learning visually is a new phenomenon (I guess the authors are not familiar with Howard Gardner's research around multiple intelligences and learning styles).
After suffering through the first three chapters, the reader is finally presented with some actual examples of visual management in practice via several brief case studies. Again, the writing is less than scholarly. No data is presented to back up any of the conclusions presented. For example, the authors claim that the visuals at a particular manufacturing plant "help to reinforce success and foster a sense of pride among the employees", but provide no qualitative or quantitative data to support this claim.
Chapters five and six provide a roadmap for becoming a visual management organization. The six-phase process (plan, frame, create, focus, detail, and renew) is discussed in detail and along with some examples. The final chapter helps the reader assess if visual management is right for his/her organization.
Although I believe visual management tactics make sense and are worth any manager's attention, I feel this book does a poor job of getting the message across. With the exception of a handful of citations throughout the book, the authors fail to share the research that informed their writing.
VM: Bringing the art & science of management to a new level.......2005-04-04
It's hard to imagine that anyone could read this book without having an "aha" experience. Much of what Liff and Posey say is so logical it's hard to believe we haven't already been applying this technique. Liff and Posey do an excellent job of setting the stage as to why Visual Management is a necessary and logical approach in our current visually rich environment. In essence, they clearly explain the why, what, how, when, who, and where of visual management. They also provide plenty of visual examples to get our creativity flowing. This is a must read for managers who want to share information effectively and increase performance.

Very interesting and useful.......2007-10-17
I like this book very much. It is full of information and useful for my business.
Disappointing.......2007-05-11
This book is a list of vocabulary words - no kidding, there's nothing else! So I went to their website thinking I must have misunderstood the description, after all, it does indicate there will be outlines. That made me think there would be more than a list of terms. But no - there's nothing else!
So - I can only recommend this book to someone looking for a vocabulary list.

Customer Reviews:
Limited value.......2005-10-26
I am an ESL teacher who bought this book for use in private lessons with a businessman who was in the USA temporarily. I was particularly attracted to the line on the front cover that says, "Enclosed cassettes let you hear business English as it is spoken in true-to-life situations." I consider that statement to be a flat-out lie. The cassette tapes have the most unnatural, scripted "conversations" that even my student recognized as being unnatural. As a way to be able to prepare oneself for business settings, the tapes are worth next to nothing.
I have given this book a generous rating of two stars because it does have some value for someone who can read well (the book has a lot of reading) and wants to familiarize themselves with some business terms in English, if all they've had is academic or regular classroom English.
This is designed as a self-learning book, so it doesn't work well in a tutoring or classroom situation. Unfortunately, business books that don't focus on business writing are scarce in ESL, so there isn't much to choose from, thus some English learners may find some value in this.
Let's Speak Business English.......2003-11-14
I feel that this book is very well written, and covers the basic information that would be valuable to any non English speaking
person.
We need books on CD.......2002-08-29
We need this kind of stuff on CD and easy to use, for example: like American Accent Training. with track number in each CD we can do each exercise, again and again.
A Difficult Way to Learn Business English.......2001-11-28
On the positive side, "Let's Speak Business English" is a concise phrasebook for the business English student. However, the language is often unnatural and the exercises provide very little practice for effectively learning the expressions.
the best bool for non-native learners.......2000-04-05
if you wanna learn some situations about the english language, this is the best book. It has a lot of cases where you get it help. You can solve your doubts reading this great book.
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A915723. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Inventory reduction is one of the most critical areas facing DoD in this era of diminishing resources and increasing global commitments. This thesis analyzes the concept of cycle time reduction as a significant method to reduce inventory levels. The order fulfillment process of a distribution center is analyzed using simulation modeling and business process reengineering (BPR) concepts. The two simulation models were designed and evaluated by measuring the cycle time of an order flowing through the distribution center. The results indicate that the cycle time of the order fulfillment process can be reduced by 90%, inventory levels reduced by 77% with a labor savings of $60,000. This was achieved by reengineering the order fulfillment process from a batch system to one that sends incoming orders directly to the warehouse for order selection. The implications for the DoD are critical to the goal of inventory reduction; by focusing on the reduction of cycle time, in-process inventories are also be reduced. The use of business process reengineering and simulation modeling offer powerful tools to aid the manager in reducing cycle time and inventory levels.
