After graduating from the University of Washington, Caleb Powell found teaching English a good way to travel and not have to pay. The World is a Class is the guidebook he and many other fledgling teachers wish they'd had as they set out on their adventures.
Customer Reviews:
An outstanding primer on Where, Who, Why, Where and How.......2005-01-09
I took a TESL (teaching English as a second language) position in Bogota, Columbia and learned much of what is in this book the hard way. If you are new to TESL then by all means read this book!
Caleb Powell has covered most all of the needed information to help you move forward to new worlds. He covers topics from "Why Teach Overseas" ("I saw islands and temples, climbed mountains, ate raw fish and beetle larvae and took a vacation in Taiwan."), to contract negotiations (an especially helpful section in this book).
Helpful are the short quips from other teachers around the world who have learned the various life lessons and the ins and outs of TESL.What is missing is an important appendix section that covers `web' resources. Only `Dave's ESL Café' is noted in the book. Strongly Recommended.
Worth the money.......2004-08-19
I came to Japan this month and bought this book, and it turns out it has helped save me some headaches, specifically, my apartment was poorly furnished, and far from my school. If not for the book I might have accepted 'what you see is what you get' and said nothing. Instead, I told my employer I was not happy, and ended up getting the apartment furnished to my liking and better hours to facilitate my commute time. Complaining immediately seemed to make a difference. I don't know what the previous review was upset about, there is a difference between wanting to make a buck and wanting to avoid being exploited. Maybe the reviewer would have been happy as a Red Guard in China, there anyone who 'made a buck' was punished. THe only problem with the book is it could be longer, but has enough valuable information that it's money well spent.
Don't waste your money ..........2004-08-17
The only thing I got out of this book (and I work with people who want to teach/work overseas) was that the author wanted to make a buck. If I could, I would have given it no stars. Don't waste your time or your money.
Good stuff, read it before you sign on the dotted line.......2003-08-16
A friend showed me this book AFTER I had already done a tour as a teacher in Korea. I wish I had read it before I went. Powell gives a lot of practical information on the process of getting a job without getting scammed but the parts I enjoyed most were the stories he told about the people and situations he has experienced. He has taught in several countries and some of the cultural comparisons are downright profound. I came back to the states after a tour but reading this book makes me wish I had made a career of it.
This book would make a perfect college graduation present- give it to that young man or woman who you fear is about to do something really boring with their life- it may plant a seed in their head and give them a lot of memories
A must read for travelling English teachers.......2003-08-04
I should have read this book BEFORE teaching English in Taiwan. This is the best guidebook about teaching English in a foreign country. I am from South Africa and I did a lot of research before coming to Taiwan. I have travelled before, but I didn't know anything about teaching, working hours, contracts, recruitors, etc. If I had read this book beforehand, I would have been better prepared for my teaching experience in Taiwan. (Believe me, I've learned the hard (and expensive) way!) Everyone interested in teaching English in a foreign country MUST read this book. This will save you a lot of trouble and money!

Customer Reviews:
Worthless.......2005-12-29
Korea has the worst reputation in terms of teaching jobs. Look up "Korean school blacklist" on Google and see the State Department's travel advisory on Korea - gives a lot more useful info than this piece of fluff.
Not quite four stars, but a few jewels may make it worth more than three........2005-12-13
When this arrived, I couldn't believe it qualified as a book, so I checked out the product pages. Yup, there it was--50 pages. IMHO, that's a fat pamphlet, and at $7.95, somewhat overpriced.
Nonetheless this book contains some practical knowledge. For example, a list of things that aren't readily available, and therefore worth taking; other items that are available, but a lot more expensive. But most important, though no one expects to need it, she includes a list on phone numbers. You can find numbers for embassies easily enough elsewhere, but the true gem is an assortment of phone numbers for Korean government agencies that deal with foreign English language teachers.
So, okay, maybe a lot of the rest of this book could have been found on the internet. Here it's gathered in one place.
Overall, it's worth at least a read at the library even if you have to request an interlibrary loan, if it's not in the bookstore--because it's so short, it won't take long! And if you're short on cash, copy out those phone numbers for the Korean agencies involved with foreign language teachers.
Another book to consider: Korea Calling: The essential handbook for teaching English and living in South Korea. At 173 pages, it has more than triple the coverage of what are mostly the same topics. At $14.95, that's the better value--except for thost phone numbers...
M Jo hates Korea, not the book.......2005-07-23
I thought Korea was great, and enjoyed my year there. I was surprised to see the review, and then checked out other Korea books and the same person said the same things about Korea. I doubt M Jo read the book.
Still good advice.......2005-06-17
I just bought this book for a job in Kwangju and have already used it. It's made life in my new home comfortable just knowing a few things about what to expect. Recommended!
Not bad but very short........2004-11-14
This book is only 50 pages and it was written years ago. It's not a very helpful guide. I have been living and teaching in Korea for the past 4 years, so I know what I'm talking about. Just do a web search for Korea blogs or Korea teaching memoir and get all the information you need.

Teach Yourself Copywriting is a cleverly written book geared not just toward the copywriter but also toward promotions directors. In addition to providing sound and entertaining guidance on writing copy for radio, TV, print, slogans, direct mail, the Internet, public relations, recruitment, and even charity solicitations, author J. Jonathan Gabay also helps the reader determine which media to use for an advertising campaign. Gabay supplements his lessons with an appealing series of copywriting exercises, one of which involves the nursery rhyme "Humpty Dumpty" and another of which requires writing headlines that capture the spirit of the Mona Lisa, a traffic light, and the gum on the back of a stamp. Throughout his book, Gabay reminds the reader not to think of copywriting as a creative endeavor. "You should consider copywriting," he says, "as primarily a selling skill." As far as the writing aspect of copywriting is concerned, "in grammatical terms," he warns, "[copywriting] is often an English professor's nightmare." (The book's spellings, currencies, examples, and humor are all British.) --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Teach Yourself Copywriting is an indispensable guide for anyone who needs to know how to produce advertising and marketing materials. This revised edition includes chapters on e-mail and Internet marketing and covers new theories and practices in copywriting.

Copywriting For Insomiacs Would Have Been A Better Title.......2005-07-31
This is one of the most boring books I have ever read. A real waste. I do not beleive that Mr. Gabay has handeled the subject sucesfully. Frankly anything I have learnt on copwriting was through reading the "Copywriters Handbook" by Robert Bly. While Mr. Bly can identify was able to identify successful copwriting campaign by various organisations Mr Gabay could only resort to a fictious company called scotsdalenorth...i guess because he was not able to identify and discuss sucessful copywriting ad campaigns.
If you are an insomniac..I would recommend this book. It will definitely put you to bed.
I am suspicious of all the five star rating that this book got. It was on this basis I made the purchase...regretfully.
I want my money back..you book is pure garbage! Look if I wanted a lesson in English I would have bought an english book...the title of you book is misleading...I seriously question whether you do know anything about copywriting...sayonara.
PS- I only chose a 1 star because there was no zero star.
Entertaining and informative..........2005-01-11
Personally, I prefer Bly's approach to learning the discipline, but I would also recommend this book. It's very entertaining, very informative, and it teaches sound copywriting principles.
Extremely Refreshing and Full of Great Information.......2003-11-24
This is by far the best book I have ever read on copywriting! It is extensively detailed with so much meat that you are constantly referring back to it. It's not a book on starting a copywriting business, it's a book about learning to improve your skills as a writer so that you can write great sales letter, marketing materials, and advertisements. It's a must read for any home business!

Customer Reviews:
Another great reference from the "Teach Yourself" series".......2002-06-07
This book is a very concise well organized resource for advanced, fluent and native speakers who wish to improve their business Spanish speaking skills. The book provides ample business vocabulary, phrases and brief grammatical explanations as a reminder of how certain rules function in Spanish (one would already have to have a solid understanding of the grammar). All chapters have practice exercises for immediate application and an answer key is provided at the back of the book. The book is comprised of business scenarios and what I found particularly helpful was that they are realistic and the phrases applied are currently used by all Spanish speaking countries thus eliminating language barriers within the Spanish language. This book will definitely enable you to improve your business Spanish vocabulary and enable you to speak confidently in a professional environment. It's also key to note that it provides basic vocabulary and phrases in the business scenarios however, if you are looking for more extensive vocabulary another reference should be consulted. I recommend this reference for those who need to speak with the correct terminology from time to time in an appropriate business situation in Spanish.
Excellent for contextual learning........2000-08-04
I used these books for my second year of spanish in a Masters degree in international marketing. The first year we did basic spanish and in this year we wanted the language we would need for business purposes. The texts are relevant and contextual, they cover both castillian and south american spanish issues. The tapes cover spanish from both sides of the atlantic which is useful. Furthermore the texts expose you to socio-political issues in the hispanic nations which gives a good basis to conversational spanish when current affairs topics crop up. Knowing the name of the spanish parliament or the title of government ministers etc is very good exposure. Thumbs up from me (I got a good mark in this course so I can't complain).
Customer Reviews:
Almost Perfect.......2004-12-18
I haven't studied grammer since grade school and this book is a good refresher. The content seems comprehensive. However, I am a little annoyed at two incidentals:
1. There are just not enough examples.
2. I have located four errors in the quizzes and I'm only a third of the way through the book. This is the most frustrating aspect. To what extent can I improve my grammer when the answers for the quizzes are incorrect? For those that own the text, look at problem 6 on page 127. The correct answer should be B and not A as the answer sheet describes.
I think I will hang onto this book and use it as a reference.
Complicated unless you're the most intellectual.......2004-02-19
This book isn't easy. I have my masters in English, working on a PhD, and at times I was even caught up with it. Very good quizes, but too fast pace, it is impossible to learn everything with the limited resources given. But, for a professor with a PhD, maybe it's possible... But then again, he should already know it all.
Not So Great.......2003-06-02
The book has some good content but the quizes and exercises are [bad] The exercises are just multiple choice questions that are so easy most 2nd graders could probably handle them. Overall not a great book for adults.
Well done Dr. Hensley.......2002-04-25
I had the honor of meeting Dr. Hensley at a conference in North Carolina. I managed to go to ever class he taught. This man is an amazing teacher! He can teach you more in ten minutes than most can teach you in one year. I encourage all who are looking for insight into writing to purchase this book and USE IT.
Finally! Grammar made easy!.......2000-06-13
I used to hate the thought of brushing up on grammar, but this book changed all that. Finally there's a concise book that covers all the basic rules - and makes it fun to learn, too. The first part of the book is an excellent overview of the rules of the English language, with plenty of explanations and examples. The second part gives terrific lessons in style and shows you how to use the rules of the English language. Each chapter also has tips and pointers, and a fun quiz at the end!
Easily the best grammar book I've ever seen!
