Book Description

Quezada creates stunning pots in the traditional style of the Casas Grandes people, including using human hair to make brushes and cow dung to feed the fire. This real-life story is written in the form of "The House That Jack Built," and relays how Juan's pioneering work has changed a poor village into a prosperous community of world-class artists. Illustrated by Caldecott Medal winner David Diaz.

4 out of 5 stars The Pot That Juan Built By Seth.......2007-03-21

The Pot that Juan built by: Seth K

If you want to know what pottery evolved from read this book. I think it's funny but one part is disgusting, Juan uses cow manure to make a fire to harden the pots. A potter Juan and his burro are the main characters. Juan lives in the village of Mata Ortiz. Juan loves to make pottery and rides his burro up the mountains to get the clay to make the pots. Juan also makes the paint out of rocks and uses hair to paint the paint on to the pots. I recommend this book to people that like funny and a little nasty stories and who are 8-10 years old. The genre is realistic fiction because it actually could have happened. This book won the Pura Belpre Honor book award. If you want to learn about Mexico and how they make pottery, read this book.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been Better for Those in the Know.......2006-03-16

For those in the know, the book suffers for want of careful editing. It is flawed, for example, by illustrator David Diaz' arrogance in placing his own designs on Quezada's pottery. Had this book been about van Gogh, Picasso or any other well-known artist, it is unlikely he would have portrayed their art with no concern for what it looked like in reality. This puts down Juan Quezada. Diaz also carelessly depicts Quezada building a pot by the continuous-coil method of the Indians of the American Southwest rather than by the distinctive method that he innovated and for which he is known. Better editing would have caught these problems with the illustrations as well as a multitude of minor inaccuracies that occur in the text, nearly one to a page. For example, in speaking of using a bean to burnish pottery, the author comments, "Of course dried beans can be found in any kitchen in the village." The bean in question is an inedible wild bean, the chilicote-not the kind that would normally be found in anyone's kitchen. Such editorial problems do not, however, detract from this production as a children's book. They are the sort that only one in the know would see.

5 out of 5 stars My kid is obsessed with this book.......2004-01-23

The absorbing subject matter of this book, presented through catchy rhymes and alliteration and strong, colorful illustrations, has completely captured the imagination of my four-year-old. For three days now, he's been "Juan" almost exclusively, following ants to a vein of "the very best clay, all squishy and white," pretending to make vessels for every conceivable purpose, and peppering me with questions about Mexico, pottery-making, and Juan himself. I've had to draw the line at cutting my hair for paintbrushes and gathering the "dried cow manure" left by the neighborhood dogs. "The Pot That Juan Built" appeals to pre-schoolers' burgeoning interest in rhyme and other aspects of language; making things out of simple materials; and the world around them generally. I give it my highest recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Beautiful Book!.......2003-11-15

I'm appalled at the lack of love for this book! I am a teacher of a 3rd grade classroom in California where my children are learing about how humans use the world around them to create their life and build their culture. This book is a perfect tie-in to this concept. The illustrations are beautiful and I found the rhymes to be intelligent and descriptive. Two thumbs up from me, and 48 thumbs up from my class!!

5 out of 5 stars A Modern Classic.......2003-10-21

This is a beautiful book, in illustration and in content. It is the true story of Juan Quezada, a potter, and a celebratory tale of the village of Mata Ortiz, Mexico. Quezada's discovery of ancient pottery methods transformed Mata Ortiz from an impoverished village into a prosperous community of world-renowned artists. The story is cleverly told in the form of "The House That Jack Built". It is sing-song-y in it's rhythm and children will be enraptured by the story Ms. Andrews-Goebel has written and the beautifully vibrant illustrations of Caldecott Award winning illustrator, David Diaz. A more complete story of the famous pottery is told on the facing pages, providing intricate details of a fascinating process. A photo-illustrated afterward follows Quezada through the process of creating a pot, from the digging of the clay to the completed product. This book is a great addition to any child's multicultural library and informs us of one of the great contemporary and nationally recognized Mexican artists. DELIGHTFUL!!!

5 out of 5 stars attitude is everything!.......2003-07-29

Dealing with a mulitude of personalities, politics and conflicts can be a daunting task on top of just trying to fullfill the requirements of a job. This book breaks down the causes of on-the-job conflict to manageable simplicity by categorizing co-workers and managers into 4 motivational types - the lone ranger, the sharpshooter, the professor and cheerleader; as well as defining their basic approaches to their work. The author then addresses various conflict resolution scenerios in which you may find yourself with these different types of people. I found this to be a very useful book based on a simple premise: Attitude is everything when you want to do any job successfully, whether you are part of a team or a manager. Some scenerios were also applicable to parenting school-aged children and helping them to improve academically. I liked the lean & careful organization of this book - the fundamental message is very straightforward stuff without a lot of fluff! Also recommend Dale Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People."

I think there are few good tips in this book.

2 out of 5 stars so-so.......2002-01-13

This book is not what I expected--I had expected an approach from a theoretical point of view. Instead, this book offers a lot of "general" techniques/advices that I did not find particularly helpful. Furthermore, this book concentrates on scenarios in a work setting, rather than daily encounters, and perhaps that is also another source of disappointment. I felt a lot of advices are "common sense", but then I have some exposure to this kind of books. I would say if you have no working experience (hence have never confronted situations presented in the book), you may consider this book as a starter. If you are looking for something more, try some other book.

This is really not a book. It is a small booklet that has some good information, but is generally a rehash of what we already can read elsewhere. I recommend a 'pass' on this one.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-10-02

This book is a wonderful read aloud to share with any grade in school as it can be adapted to suit different age groups & their comprehension abilities. Along with Keats' other books, it has an urban theme & great to use as a mentor text or author study.

5 out of 5 stars Apartment 3.......2000-04-20

I first read this book to my daughter when she was 4-years-old. The New York tenement setting was such a foreign world in contrast to her suburban Dallas upbringing that she was immediately enthralled with the fact that so many families of diverse ethnic backgrounds would all live in one building. Keats paints such a vivid word picture that a child as young as she could easily be drawn into the story line. The characters and events became real to her, to the extent that she could literally hear the harmonica playing. My daughter begged to revisit this story and consequently every trip to the library for the next year included Apartment 3. To this day, at age 29 and expecting her first child, she still recalls this book and wants a copy of her own.

5 out of 5 stars Dealing With Difficult People in the Library.......2000-05-28

Willis's book provides the library employee the means to improve customer relations. The book is broken down into three parts. Part one deals with several situations and solutions applicable to any library. Part two emphasizes improving communication; from effective listening skills to using empathy and "I" statements when assisting a problem patron. The third section deals with prevention. The author stresses how developing policies, training staff, and assessing individual cases for future awareness can benefit the library. Overall, this is a well-written resource that anyone from middle to upper management can read, digest and apply to their own library setting. The material is written in a clear and concise manner with practical situations and solutions. A final section at the end of the book includes sample policies and customer service language to assist libraries in creating a more friendly and helpful environment for the staff and patrons.

5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2005-01-05

This book is a must read for every muslim child growing up in the West and for everyone who is trying to understand the American/Canadian Muslim experience. It truely captures the humanity of a muslim girl growing up in the west. it shows how she has the same problems most kids have, the bossy older sister and trying to be popular to how she feels outside because she is a Muslim and an Indian. every middle and high school in america should have this book on thier libraries shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-09-17

Hello All,

I just finished this scintillating story dealing with many issues that a young adult may face in school, in one afternoon. Yes one afternoon! I found the story so gripping that it was hard to put down. Not a young adult myself, I thank the author for showing me a way of understanding and developing empathy for what teenagers go through.

A must read for yourself and your kids!

4 out of 5 stars the bully bites the dust.......2002-02-14

Well, I am not a young adult, rather a middling adult, and I very much enjoyed this book. In fact once I was past the middle, I couldn't put it down. Zainab's trials with peer pressure, belonging, friendships and siblings took me back to grade and highschool... very realistic and multifaceted. None of the characters are one-sided, and behaviour is not overly simplified (possible exception: the bully Kevin, who doesnt seem to have any redeeming features at all).Zainab's progression from desperate to please, to fully self-confident in one school year is a bit optimistic... but this book belongs on the shelf next to most adult non-fiction self-esteem books. The messages of being yourself, standing up for your values, forgiving oneself's little failings all come out clear, and in a non-preachy manner. The foreshadowing of abusive female/male adult relationships in the relationship between Kevin and Jenny(and the rest of his "harem") is rather ominous, as are the results of the abuse... realistically portrayed without being melodramatic. All in all a very engaging and worthwhile book.

4 out of 5 stars Coming of Age in a Different Culture.......1999-12-19

Zainab is a 14-year-old with typical problems - the wrong jeans, a bossy older sister, a friend with big breasts. Add to that the drama contest, and she's up to her humming ears in problems. I loved this character - she's funny and flawed and trying to figure out how to deal with the world. Add to that her Pakistani background and Muslim beliefs, and the book becomes more than just a typical coming of age YA book. Her problems were relatable no matter what beliefs the reader might have, and yet her struggle to make decisions within the guidelines of her values made for a thought-provoking book. My 14-year-old and 11-year old daughters read the book, as well, and it provoked a real family dialog about tolerance, understanding and collaboration. Good story, with 3-dimensional characters and funny, realistic situations. I'd recommend it for middle and high school readers. (And as an adult, I enjoyed it, too.)

        Book Description

Celebrate the storytellers who tell the tales-- whether in words, pictures, music, or all three

A willful boy and a dancing witch go to clamorous lengths to win a magic fiddle.... A maiden imprisoned by her cold-hearted brother is rescued by the power of love.... A quest for knowledge leads three boys on an unforgettable journey....

Inspired by Afro-Caribbean, Celtic, and Native American lore, this engaging trio of original stories comes to vivid life in stunning, collage-like illustrations by Kristen Balouch. In addition, each story has been interpreted through specially commissioned music (available on a separate CD or cassette from Sony Classical*) by three of today's most well known composers--Wynton Marsalis, Patrick Doyle, and Edgar Meyer. The result is a unique storytelling experience that also provides the most refreshing way in which to introduce children to classical music since Peter and the Wolf.

Kristen Balouch is a designer and illustrator. This is her first book for children. Wynton Marsalis is a Pulitzer prize-winning composer, musician, and author of two previous books on music: Sweet Swing Blues on the Road and Marsalis on Music (both Norton).

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good music for decent stories.......2002-10-15

This CD is overall very nice, though the three pieces vary considerably both in style and quality.

"The Lesson of the Land" is set to music that is well done (the highlight being a magnificently soaring trumpet solo which depicts the wheeling flight of an eagle, similar in sound to Copland's "Quiet City"), but the story doesn't really hold together very well. It is never clear exactly why it was wrong for Running Wolf to eat eggs which he found in a nest but it was not wrong later for Little Bear to eat a fish he caught out of a stream.

"The Face in the Lake" is, as a story, better than "Lesson" but still not great. The lesson is clearer - the connection is well made between Jardur's kindness to Olwen and his eventual freeing from Winter's spell, although it would have been good to know more of how he fell under Winter's influence. The music, however, is absolutely delightful. Listen especially for the way the basses emphasize Winslet's introduction of the "warming breeze" of spring at 1:30. Patrick Doyle is, in my view, the most likely candidate to be the heir to John Williams's title as the master of Hollywood music.

The real gem on this disc, though, is "The Fiddler and the Dancin' Witch," both set to music and narrated by Wynton Marsalis, who here proves once again that he is much more than a trumpet virtuoso. The dissonant sound of the music at first put me off, but the music has gradually grown on me, to the point that I now truly enjoy it. (It is a strong recommendation that my wife, who does not customarily appreciate dissonance, found the enjoyable colors on Marsalis's strings even before I did.) Marsalis also gives the strongest narrative performance of the three, no doubt assisted by knowing as he performed the narration exactly what the composer had in mind.

Overall, I would recommend this disc to anyone who wants to instill in their children a love of good music. My only other complaint (albeit very minor) is that "Fiddler" is divided into several tracks, while the other two are each only one track; each method of dividing (or not dividing) the music into tracks has its strengths, but it would help for programming the CD player's memory if it were consistently one or the other.

4 out of 5 stars A TREAT FOR EYES AND EARS.......2000-11-10

Everyone loves a good story, especially when it's related in a spellbinding voice. Add original music composed to enhance the text and you have a captivating feast of words, pictures, and music.

Very much like the beloved children's orchestral piece "Peter and the Wolf," Listen To The Storyteller, the book and CD, are not only enticing introductions for children to classical music but their appeal spans generations.

Inspired by Afro-Caribbean, Celtic, and Native American cultures, this trio of morality folktales takes us on a unique around the world tour. Illustrator Kristen Balouch, a visiting professor at the Pratt Institute, enlivens the text with vibrant collage-like paintings that are as arresting for the eyes as the music is for the ears.

"The Fiddler and the Dancing Witch" with music composed and text narrated by Wynton Marsalis is the story of Simeon, "a hard-headed boy." He lives with his father "in a little village on an island in a deep green sea."

Simeon is fascinated by a fiddle his father plays. And, even though his father cautions him not to touch the musical instrument, the boy rebels, saying "Ears are good for lots of things `sides listenin' to grownups!"

In his father's absence, Simeon takes up the forbidden object only to find that the fiddle has a mind of its own, and Simeon has created more than music - he has made "trouble, trouble, and more trouble!"

On the CD violinist Joshua Bell makes that fiddle sing and soar wildly.

A Celtic story of the triumph of good over evil, "The Face in the Lake" is winningly narrated by Kate Winslett, and music is composed by Patrick Doyle.

This tale takes place a long time ago "when butterflies knew how to sing and the stars whispered to the trees, there lived four siblings who brought forth the seasons to the land."

The beautiful maiden Olwen who ushered in springtime incurred the jealousy of her cold-hearted brother Cruel Winter. He cast a spell upon her, freezing her powers so that there was no spring in the land.

Olwen is rescued from her imprisonment in Winter's icy castle by a small, hunched servant who is then transformed by Olwen's grateful love.

KateWinslett brings charming life to this turn on the frog who became a prince.

As "The Lesson Of The Land" opens "men of the tribe could be heard singing to the Great Mystery and to the spirits of powerful animals, praying to be granted their wisdom."

At dawn three young friends, Eagle Son, Little Bear, and Running Wolf will leave their home to go in search of the wisdom and knowledge of their elders. Regrettably, one of the trio becomes greedy and eats three very large eggs which are found in a nest built of pebbles.

His act, which dishonors the animal spirits, is not only his downfall but jeopardizes the safety of his friends.

Master instrumentalist Edgar Meyer composed the music for this Native American story, and narrator Graham Greene offers the slitheriest, stealthiest serpent imaginable in his dramatic performance.
