4 out of 5 stars Informative Introduction to Telecommunications.......2002-03-12

This book starts with the very basics but eventually gets into some interesting information. If you are an experienced telecomm person, you may want to stand clear of this one because it provides lengthy coverage of some basic subjects.

On the other hand, if you are new to telecommunications it is an excellent text to start with. It gives the reader a good foundation knowledge of coding principles, client-server, OSI Model, packet and circuit switching, ATM, the list goes on. Most subjects are covered in more detail than just a quick overview, so you actually gain an understanding of the subject matter.

My favorite chapters were on network management, and network design and implementation. Also, the book is quite up-to-date with discussions on xDSL, Gigabit Ethernet, GSM, etc.

1 out of 5 stars This book is NOT worth it........2001-11-24

I had to buy this for my intro to telecom class as some of the others. This book (stinks), unless you are an art major and want to learn all the basics about telecommunications. If you are SERIOUSLY looking to get into telecommunications, or networking theory, check out Computer Networks by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. It gives you MUCH more theory, in detail, and a hell-uv-alot less (...), for less money!! (...) This is the book we should have been using. Too bad this 300 level class was for beginners. Should've been a 100 level class.......I have been doing networking and System administration for about 5 years now, and this book is great overview, really really bad for networking concepts. Even managers should know what the hell their employees are doing on a deeper level....this book skims over the important decision making processes that any good "manager" would be asking of their top engineers. Of course, if the manager would have bought a better book, they probably wouldn't need to ask!!

1 out of 5 stars Def not a good book!!.......2001-10-17

I and many others in my IT Management program were forced to buy this new text book for our intro to telecom course. All I can say about this book is that it is far to broad!

Didn't teach me anything new!!

4 out of 5 stars OK book.......2001-08-24

A relatively good introduction to Telecommunication for starters.

1 out of 5 stars Other texts are deeper.......1999-04-23

We got the book for a course in Introduction to Networking. The only thing the teacher could say was, "I wish that GWU didn't require this book, there are better, and cheaper at that." It really does not deliver in detail. It is just a superficial vision. Skip it if possible.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Converged Network Development Protocols.......2007-07-09

As a 12 year Telecom software development professional I can say that this is a great book for people wanting to take a step into the new world of Telecom/Datacom convergence.

5 out of 5 stars good reference for new telco sw developer.......2004-06-29

this book is a kind of dictionary for a new beginner in telco sw dev. area .
it includes most recent references inside for h323,sip and APIs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to the Topic.......2004-03-11

The book provided a good introduction to various APIs being defined and developed for network service applications. I'm giving it only 4 stars because I feel that half the book was spent on background information that anyone looking to research this topic would probably already know. I would have rather more detail been given in chapters 12, 13, and 14 (which is why I read the book) and less attention to chapters 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, which deal with generic java and web programming topics. However, given the little information available on the topic, the book is worth 4 stars just for providing the information it does.

5 out of 5 stars This is a practical and informative book.......2004-01-30

In my line of work I typically read eight to ten technical books each year. With my company's focus on wireless LAN security lately I had to become an 'expert' and read a bunch of books. This book is way superior to others on the topic. By words and numerous screen illustrations the author demonstrates that he has 'been there, done it' and shows how to do things that other books just gloss over. I especially thought the security checklist in the appendix was extremely valuable and by itself worth the price of this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Obsolete.......2001-04-09

I am new to the 'home office' concept of working. A critical success factor in this setup, where face-to-face human interaction is minimal, is to have powerful telephone skills.

I found that the book is obsolete and does not cover modern-age telephone techniques including the following :

    - Effective Conference Calling - Effective Technical Presentations on telephone - Effective 'Bridge Calling' - leaving effective voice mail messages - Telephone Etiquettes - Mobile Phone techniques - Controlled Gossiping - Getting past the secretary to the Boss

Instead, the book digresses into normal sales techniques and telemarketing techniques, contradicting with the book cover : 'guide for manager or business owner'.

The book can better be retitled as 'elementary telephone skills for telemarketers'

    I am disappointed.

This is the only book I've seen that's actually about the people who manage telecommunications, rather than technology. It really looks at things from a different angle.

It got me thinking about many of the things I do on a daily basis, and ways to improve them.

If telecom management is your career, then this can only help you go further.

        5 out of 5 stars An invaluable step-by-step approach........2000-06-04

Is anyone making money on the Net besides web developers? If so, how can a small business participate, expanding their customer base and growth potential? The E-Commerce Question & Answer Book joins a few others on how to make money on the internet and addresses many side issues, from whether to hire a programmer to create Web pages to understanding how databases work in the e-commerce world. Invaluable here is a step-by-step approach which rates and discusses options and then tells how to achieve goals.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT guide to making sense of the Internet.......2000-05-13

Very helpful guide...clear, concise & always to the point. We're a nontechnical company (construction) moving a major part of our business toward e-commerce. This book identified and explained many of the issues & questions we'd been stumbling over. Highly recommend it as both a primer and a blueprint for taking on the e-commerce world.

5 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for anyone venturing into e-commerce........2000-04-06

From e-auctions and trading to making sales on the net and evaluating how e-commerce can affect a product's distribution, The E-Commerce Question and Answer Book provides an important basic primer on the topic for business managers who need to consider e-commerce for their business. Chapters explain terminology and provide a foundation for making business decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Great starter for technical folks and business people.......2000-03-26

This book is published so technical people can understand the business perspective of e-commerce and also so business people can understand the technical side of e-commerce. It caters to both audiences without being too boring or too difficult. It is also organized in a question and answer manner that you can quickly get the information you want out of it. You can read the entire book in very little time by skipping over the "tell me more" sections that you don't care to know more about and get more information by reading the "tell me more" sections that you do want to know more about.

The book does seem to be talking to the medium sized business, but all the information is still relevant to the small business person to see the bigger picture of e-commerce for their business. The book is not an exhaustive reference, but it is a good read for anyone getting started who needs to understand the business of getting on-line with your business -- quickly.
