5 out of 5 stars I never knew about any of this!.......2007-10-21

I love it when a book comes along that points out web site functions I never realized existed. This book packs a lot of information into a compact read, which makes it easy to get through but steers you in exactly the right marketing direction. The way he assigns ratings to the various marketing techniques helps one decide what to tackle first.

4 out of 5 stars A solid looks at the basics.......2007-10-14

As the author of the recently self-published Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006 I devoured the contents of this book to try to jump-start my Amazon sales. I can't speak to the results just yet as the portion of the suggestions that I have implemented has only been in place for a week or so.

In fact, part of the appeal of the book is that it's not supposed to show results yet. It's not a quick "make you book an instant Amazon bestseller" plan. The book has tips and techniques that grow your presence over the long haul. That's exactly what I was looking for and this book delivers.

The steps were easy to follow and the "why's" were well laid out. Obviously, the author did his homework on the subject of Amazon.

--Rich Tandler, author of Hokie Games: Virginia Tech Football Game by Game 1945-2006

5 out of 5 stars Great asset for POD authors.......2007-09-23

When I purchased this book, I was really quite skeptical. I figured that it was just a promotion of Amazon.com and not really any useful advice.

Then my wife and I published our first children's book, Santa and Sam's Big Secret through Outskirts Press. Although OP did a wonderful job of publishing the book, the major portion of publicity for the book was left up to us. We have been following some of the advice offered by Brent Sampson and we do believe that it is helping with the promotion of our book.

Sell Your Book on Amazon is an easy read. You can easily skip over chapters that you do not feel interest you, and still come up with many ideas that will help you to promote your book.

I would recommend this book to any authors who are using a Publish On Demand publisher. It will surely enhance the sales of your book.

I wrote a book called, "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." It took three years to write. I spent another year sending it to publishers before I finally found a small publisher willing to work with me.

The Great Day came. I held my baby in my hands. I knew the world would proclaim her beauty. I was wrong, very wrong. A few friends and friends of friends bought the book. I was stunned and hurt too. But I kept trying to market my book the old fashioned way. I contacted the major book chains. To them I did not exist. I sent over 100 books to bookstores, and I never got a single order. I sent about 100 books to major newspapers, and I never got a single review.

One local bookstore, New Renaissance Bookshop in Portland, Oregon was very helpful. But the support of one local bookstore was not enough. I was almost ready to give up, but instead I went to Amazon and joined the Amazon Advantage program. I sold perhaps 20 books. Victory at last! Amazon loved me and I loved Amazon! And then I did not sell another book on Amazon for about a month.

I was ready to give up. But I knew my book could help readers feel better about themselves. I had received dozens of touching letters that left me feeling happy that something I had done made a difference in the world. Besides, I needed the money. Family illnesses had depleted my bank account and my debt was mounting. So, instead of quitting, I did an Amazon search for books on marketing books, and I found, "How to Sell Your Book on Amazon," by Brent Sampson.

I wish I had found this book a year ago. If you have a book you are trying to sell, or if you want to write a book, buy this book. Unless you are that rare writer who pens a bestseller, you will find yourself alone in a big jungle. Amazon gives you a path out of the jungle, and Brent Sampson's book is the guide.

Honestly, I have just started implementing his suggestions. So I have lots of work to do. After I finish this review, I will ask him to be my Amazon friend. I might ask him to review "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening." He said to mention my book as often as possible without being obnoxious. And finally, he said Amazon friends are important. You see, if you become my friend, whenever anyone goes to your Amazon profile and clicks on my picture in your Friends section, there's a chance I will sell a book. And if someone clicks on your picture in my Friends section, you might sell a book. So, do you want to be my friend? Good heavens, I feel like a little kid again.

I will make a deal with you. In a year, I will write another review of "Sell Your Book on Amazon" and let you know how I am doing. Thank you, John C. Conley, author of "Letters to My Friends: A No Guarantees Guide to Awakening."

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars outdated and redundant information.......2004-01-01

The: Web Page Design, Web Page Elements and Navigation sections are *outdated*. This book was created in 1999 and there has been many advancements and corrections in this field.

The: Web Page Style, Editing and Web Page Writing Techniques sections could be great for beginner writers but for those who thought they would get a whole bunch of nuggets about writing for the web, will be sadly disappointed. At minimum, half a handful of nuggets can be gotten while sifting through the outdated and redundant information.

The: Types of Web Writing section was probably *most useful* to me and I wasn't really wanting information about that in the first place.

The book is also hard-to-read, even though it attempts at making it easy-to-read. Everything is sort of "clumped" together with too many icons, too much in the legend and not enough "white space" to follow the information coherently.

In 1999, I could see this book being a major hit... combining web page design and writing skills but the heavy price tag of the book today isn't merited.

If you get it, skip the stuff about web design. Better yet, pick up a copy at your local library to see what I'm talking about and then make your decision from there.

In my opinion, this isn't a book to keep in your private library collection!

2 out of 5 stars A Somewhat Useful Book for Beginning Writers.......2001-04-22

The Internet Writer's Handbook is just that--a handbook. As such, it's not something you'll be reading or spending much time with. But that's a good thing, because this rather expensive book is very cheaply made and violates every rule of page layout its author attempts to teach. Pages are so busy and painful to look at that I'm rarely tempted to pick it up. The information is sound but basic. Much of it is typical freshman comp handbook stuff in Web-style disguise. The high price of this book makes even its good points sting a little. Bottom line: If I could have seen The Internet Writer's Handbook before I bought it, I wouldn't have considered it--especially at [the price] plus shipping.

5 out of 5 stars No sifting required: Chock full of gold nuggets of knowledge.......2000-04-15

This is an AWESOME book! Very well organized. It can be read word-for-word cover-to-cover OR reviewed quickly for the major points! The information is very accessible because of the presentation: lots of bulleted lists, short paragraphs, and special tips. Also, excellent examples (of both stellar and regretable writing) are given throughout the book. This book is a success due to the excellent oranization and presentation, AND the broad scope of information offered (e.g., three chapters on different aspects of writing for the Web, a chapter on editing Web sites, chapters on Web page design and navigation, and more)!

As a novice in the subject of writing for the Web, I've found this an excellent "How to" book. I'm an editor of trade books and other publications, but am learning about writing for the Web. So far, this has been the most helpful book because of the accessibility of the information (not buried in long, narrative chapters).

Another recommendation: I recommend "Writing for New Media" (1998). In "Writing for New Media," authors Bonime and Pohlmann discuss writing for interactive media, which includes interactive thinking, interactive writing (instead of linear writing), and aspects of interactive storytelling.

5 out of 5 stars Great combination of web style guidelines and writing style.......2000-02-20

I've read many books regarding web design and writing for online media. This book combines some knowledge you'd get from The Chicago Manual of Style, with some of the web info you'd get from The Yale Web Style Guide. Great mix of both subjects, in a a format that makes for easy reading. You need this book if you're web mastering and writing the content for your site.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite grammar handbook.......2007-10-23

This is the assigned text in the English composition courses I currently teach. I had used the Little, Brown Handbook in the past. I find Hacker's book to be useful, concise, and pleasant to read. Her explanations are clear, the organization of the book is logical, and the included sections on MLA, APA, and CMS documentation formats are essential. The comb binding (so it lays flat when you open it) and section tabs are also nice.

The sixth edition continues the trend and is, if anything, even better than this fifth edition.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-10-17

It is a great resource. I use it for work and other writing tasks. Thank you very much.

    4 out of 5 stars A writer's reference.......2007-10-01

This book is required for my online English Composition and it has been helpful for online editing and critiquing. Best part is that Amazon shipped it fast so I got it in one day!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2007-10-01

I am currently enrolled in graduate school, and the professors are very strict with written reports and proposals. The Writer's Reference is an excellent tool to use as a guide in APA, MLA, and Chicago style format. I have to use the APA format for school and the information within the guide is easy to read and very user friendly. I am doing very well with my written assignments and I truly love Ms. Hacker's reference materials she is excellent with details. I recommend this as a must buy for any grad student.

Writer's Market On- Line Guide is an extensive resource for writers and one can easily become overwhelmed with such an exhaustive guide like this. It's mostly reference tools, with the bulk of the book dedicated to information from actual publishers, agents, and magazines. Only the first few sections, before the publishers, contain actual reading material. But it's all arranged very nicely and it includes very helpful facts for the aspiring author.

I like the sample form letters in the Query Letter Clinic. It's one thing to explain what works and what doesn't, but it's even more helpful to be able to visualize actual letters that are "good" and "bad". The contributors of this guide explain exactly what publishers look for when they review a manuscript and they give tips on common mistakes to avoid.

I spent most of my time thumbing through the publisher's reference section of this book. I was surprised at the number of publications, particularly magazines, that devote a substantial portion of their publication to freelance writers. With each listing, Writer's Guide shows the percentage of the magazine that is comprised of freelance writing, so that you can gauge your odds of getting published. Some are high, others are low. For example, Motor Trend Magazine contains only 5 to 10% freelance- written material, but the payoff for a published article can be as high as several hundred dollars. Entrepreneur Magazine, on the other hand, includes 60 percent freelance material. The payout is slightly less, but the higher level of freelance writing means that your individual odds of getting published are greater.

Writer's Guide includes a few postcards that can be removed to buy more products (like a magazine subscription to Writer's Digest), to send for free material from the Writer's Digest School, and to buy more Writer's Guides, like the Children's Writers Guide, The Literary Agent Guide, Novel and Short Story Writer's Market Guide, and a few others. There are countless listings of resources to access, including online and others.

One thing to note about this guide is that the title is a little misleading. While it does contain information on getting published by utilizing the internet, this is really only a small fraction of the guide. It actually contains information on all sorts of ways to get published, including phone and fax numbers to contact publishers directly.

Overall, this is a very good guide to writing and getting published. A little bit more personal reading would have been nice (there are only about 90 pages of actual reading material) but the reference sections are invaluable to the aspiring writer. If you have ever considered selling your personal writing, then you will find this guide very helpful. It's a heap of writing information, right at your fingertips.

    1 out of 5 stars Duplication of the 2003 Writer's Market book.......2003-06-12

I recently ordered Writer's Digest Market Online and am very disappointed with my order, if not downright angry. When I received it, I was dismayed to find out that this "Market Online" book is indeed the same thing, or very similiar, to the 2003 Writer's Market book. I ordered this with the belief that this book would offer online markets (websites) to sell articles to. Instead, it lists magazines and book publishers - the very same thing as the original 2003 Writer's Market! I feel that this book is a duplication of the first and cannot return my book now because I opened it and consider it a waste of money.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2003-05-29

[$$$] book offering great online access BUT you have to scrape off a number (like a lottery ticket) to access your code and mine got all mangled (not like a lottery ticket) - and Writer's Market just ignored me when I contacted them. That's fraud! I wasted [$$$] for nothing!

5 out of 5 stars Your career starts here.......2002-08-24

There are few events in life that I look forward to more than receiving my shiny new Writer's Market each year. Once again, the good people at Writer's Digest Books have outdone themselves. This exhaustively researched book contains more than 8,000 places to sell your work-- what more could you ask for? Oh! How about pricing guidelines, expert advice, info about agents, writing contests, syndicates, organizations for writers...

I mean it most earnestly when I tell you I wouldn't have a career without this book. And ever since I got the online version, I'm not sure how I lived without it. I use it every day to keep track of my submissions. It even tells me when it's time to follow up on a query, and allows me to record notes about different markets-- I can punch in my deadlines, payment info, contact names, etc.

Of all the books in the world, this is the only one that I can say with full confidence is an absolute necessity to those who want to make a career of their writing. The price is meager compared to its benefits. No matter what you write, you'll find markets for it here.

    4 out of 5 stars Essential resource.......2002-07-05

A must-have for working and aspiring writers alike. Beginners will find the articles helpful, working pros need the listings.

FYI: The listings makes side-by-side comparisons practically impossible, so I recommend inputting the information on your computer, then formatting it as a table. Pricing guidelines are sometimes inconsistent (average pay is listed as above-average and vice versa) and some small sections look as if they went directly to press without proofreading. Online updates more than compensate for such minor considerations.

3 out of 5 stars Everybody ought to have one hard copy.......2005-02-12

"The" book for aspiring writers, everyone should have at least one copy. After that, the online service is maybe all you'll need. With a universe full of places to publish and agents to get you pubished and great articles by people like Jenna Glatzer, I've yet to see every page of my hard copy. I do, however, make constant use of the online service available with the purchase of the book. Online data mining makes for much quicker finding of what you need, as well as record-keeping of what you've sent where.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2003-11-15

There is almost nothing new over 2002 and 2003, and there is nothing in the cd that you cannot get more cheaply on line. They have a connection with Writersmarket.com (a sloppily run outfit--don't give them a credit card). The book is better in the non on line version (That's a 4 star).

5 out of 5 stars Simply a 'must' for any aspiring writer.......2003-10-19

The yearly updates of the "Writer's Market" have become the would-be and professional writer's Bible, packed with the latest information on publications seeking work and paying for writings. This edition includes free access to writersmarket.com, a searchable database of all listings, in addition to its usual emphasis on submissions guidelines, contact names and payment info. The inclusion of Canadian and many international publishers makes for an important guide which is simply a 'must' for any aspiring writer.

    5 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure, but I tried the site anyway.......2003-09-11

After reading a Writer's Market review that said the site has more info than the book, I decided to try out the site. And even after only a few days of being on it, I've got to say--it rocks!

There is a lot more information. There are tons of market listings, which is the main reason I buy the book, but there's also a section filled with answers to reader questions about book publishing answered directly by literary agents. And there's a huge archive of articles on marketing your writing.

On top of that good stuff, there are neat features like the Favorites Folder and Submission Tracker--that helps you keep track of your submissions without using 3X5 index cards, or random pieces of paper.

And amazingly, it all costs the same as the book! I mean, I don't think there is a better deal out there, and I'm really confused by the earlier posts that seem to dog this site.

The book has helped me make several sales over the years, but this site should help streamline my marketing efforts so that I can make even more. Or I might use that extra time to get a little sleep.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK AND WEBSITE BOTH WORTH THE MONEY.......2003-09-11

AS ALWAYS THE 2004 WRITER'S MARKET IS CHOCK FULL OF PLENTY OF MARKETS FOR MY WRITING. I WAS DISAPPOINTED TO LEARN, THOUGH, THAT THE GREETING CARD SECTION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOK AND PLACED ONLINE. THESE MARKETS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A RELIABLE SOURCE OF INCOME FOR ME (AS HAVE MANY OF THE MAGAZINE MARKETS), SO I WENT TO THE BOOK'S WEBSITE AND PURCHASED A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION SO THAT I COULD GET THE MARKETS I WANTED. I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE WEBSITE, BUT WHEN I GOT THERE, I FOUND THAT THERE ARE MORE MARKETS THAT ARE NOT EVEN LISTED IN THE BOOK. I AM DEFINITELY GOING TO GET A YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION ONCE MY MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION RUNS OUT.
