A must for both experienced and aspiring teachers.......2007-06-30
This was one of three required texts for my masters level Adv. Language Arts class. At first, I thought that the book would follow the pathway of others dealing with education in urban schools--focus on the "Great White Hope". Although the author is Caucasian and the majority of her students are minorities, the book didn't come off as a "Made in Hollywood" story. Christensen is completely honest in her sharing of students' attitudes, experiences, beliefs, and achievemnets as well as her own. She is explicit in her teaching methods, and openly shares what works and what doesn't. It is impossible for me to give Christensen the credit that she deserves in such a limited space. However, I encourage you to discover her on your own. Happy reading.
One of The Best Teaching Books.......2007-01-22
Linda Christensen's book is one of the most useful and rewarding books for teaching Language Arts, period. Reading, Writing, and Rising Up is totally hands on, useful, and will help any teacher figure out better, more effective ways to make learning meaningful for their students. I've used this book many times in my own classes and my students have responded well. No other Language Arts book incorporates issues of social justice so seamlessly. Thank you Linda!
Not what I expected in a text book for education.......2006-10-25
I had expected this text to be a collection of teaching ideas and suggestions for students preparing to teach language arts in school. There are some useful ideas for educational majors. There is also a ton of unuseful, uninsightful and personal ramblings of an apparent devout feminist who obliviously would more comfortable wrting about societies ills with men in charge, instead of useful educational ideas. Writer Christensen should write social commentaries, instead of professing to write useful text, when she can spew extreme left wing ideas. This should have been a book for a sociology class, not an education class.
A Very Good Read.......2006-02-25
I bought this book for a class I'm taking as an education major. This book was an asset to me when planning lessons I'd like to tackle with my students. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in giving students greater ways to to express themselves through their written work!
If you work in a multicultral classroom, a troubled youth classroom or any secondary ed school you need this book........2005-10-07
I bought this book because I thought it seemed interesting. I had no idea how useful it would be.
I work with out of school teenagers who are almost all Latino. This book has given me so many activities to use with my students. They are really starting to understand the power of their voices and how important their stories are. It was really a blessing to finally come across a book that actually addresses the population that I work with.
Book Description
Clairvoyance is the ability to see visual information through extrasensory means. It is like watching a movie unfold before your eyes, or dreaming while you are awake. According to Debra Lynne Katz, anyone who can visualize a simple shape or color has basic clairvoyant ability that can be developed.
The only book of its kind that focuses solely on clairvoyance, You Are Psychic will provide you with invaluable tools you can use in your everyday life for guidance, healing, protection, manifestation, and creativity. Katz shares her own time-proven methods, firsthand accounts of clairvoyant readings, and techniques from the best psychic development schools. Psychic readings, healing methods, vision interpretation, and spiritual counseling are covered in this book as well. This practical guide is easy to follow and perfect for anyone interested in developing or strengthening their psychic abilities.

Must have!!.......2007-09-09
When I found this book, I was looking to answers to some of the odd things that happened through out my life. Dreams that came true, knowing who was on the phone, for starters. I stumbled on this book here at Amazon. I found it fun and easy to read. I couldnt put it down. It definately put me in touch with my pychic side, and have been giving accurate reading to friends. I have reread parts of the book everyday since I bought it! This is one purchase I am extremely pleased with, and I look foreward to her next book.
Not Sure About This Book!.......2007-08-22
It starts off interesting and making sense. Then it goes off the deep end for me. There are some good ideas, but I found nothing concrete to help enhance your natural abilities. It became boring and redundant.
Excellent Guide to Beginners and Adepts!.......2007-07-11
Katz' fantastic book in beneficial to both aspiring psychics and established practitioners alike! I was in a slow and difficult place in my life with my own psychic and metaphysical practice after years of successfully implementing such concepts into my everyday life. Seeking a way to reconcile my neo-pagan lifestyle with my more New-Age metaphysically focused studies was difficult until I found this book. I believe that each of us draw to ourselves information when it is most needed. Being a clairvoyant and clairsentient myself (as we all can be with work and faith), I thought I knew it all; Katz educated me to reevaluate where I was in my psychic abilities and reassess where I was headed. Invaluable resource for anyone interesting in either being clairvoyant to improve your life and faith as well as for those who, like myself, want to heal others and the world through these gifts in a professional approach. Thank you Debra for your fantastic lessons needed by stubborn psychics like myself!
Great learner for psychics and clairvoyants.......2007-05-20
If you are trying to develop your psychic and clairvoyant ability, then theis book is a must. It is a book as the author suggests you first read through, then go back into. There are many and varied exercises that would need months of practice and development, but Debra Katz has generously shared her knowledge and experience with the world. This is the best book on psychic development I have come across.
Extraordinary psychic!.......2006-12-29
Debra Lynn Katz is an extraordinary psychic! I have had readings with many different psychic/energy readers, healers over the past 5 years, many of them exceptional, but when I was fortunate enough to have Debra do a reading for me, I knew I was in the presence of someone truly coming from the heart!
I have had 2 readings, each of which read me perfectly at that moment, and she gave me very perfect, practical things to do. The first reading I only wanted to pay for a short one, but she went over by 15 or 20 minutes and didn't ask me to pay extra. She is very giving, and very proficient. I can't say enough superlatives!
I found out about Debra from a friend who was reading her book. I told my friend that I was going to contact Debra for a reading, and she was amazed that I would when it was all there in her book. So, now that I have had such an incredible experience of the author's ability, I will purchase her book to learn from her genius. Thank you, Debra.

Must Read.......2007-09-15
This book is life changing... It transformed the way I read the Bible and the way God speaks to me.
Great introduction to Spiritual Reading.......2007-03-22
I've had this book for years and read it for the first time several years ago. It helped me begin to read the Bible formationally, and this practice felt like "coming home". I read it again recently, and it was just as fresh, and as with good writing, I noticed things I had completely missed the first time.
This is an excellent read for understanding formational reading, and a much needed correction for our information only culture. And contrary to what some might think, he is not advocating that you check your brain at the door and never read for information. Rather he is teaching something that we moderns have lost - the understanding that we are to soak in the Scripture, taste it, eat it (like John in the book of Revelation). The idea is that in order to be formed in the image of Christ, we need to read with a different goal than most of us have been taught.
Buy it and read it! Enjoy the way it transforms your connection with Scripture.
A Helpful Way to Think about Spiritual Formation.......2006-11-10
Mulholland's text is a very readable and approachable primer about using scripture for spiritual formation. One of the things I especially appreciated was his definition of spiritual formation that formed the foundation for his text. He refutes those who want to use scripture or any 'technique' to become more spiritual for their own sakes. Mulholland points the reader to a focus outside of themselves. He maintains that spiritual transformation must be for the sake of others and not ourselves.
Offers needed medicine to our souls.......2004-08-17
Quite rich - I just finished reading this book twice in the last week. A few chapters are a little dry in the middle, but otherwise a very fabulous work that completely overshadows the two tedious chapters; where he is laying some ground work.
A very well-explained description of spiritual formation and description of spiritual disciplines. The chapter on doing/being as it relates to disciplines is worth the price of the book alone.
In addition, it is very applicational for the reader (although he describes a couple of instances in his journey, I would have liked to see more of his own personal learning added).
In my opinion this book (originally written in 1985) is "way ahead of its time" in bridging mainline, mystical, and evangelical thought - although it never makes those distinctives.
I would say that perhaps he slightly over-emphasizes the formational (vs informational) but I would also add this very important point: that it is this exact over-emphasis that is a needed corrective to the balance of our day for most people.
For me this what a provoking book to my spiritual journey. I am very thankful - there are about a dozen different passages that struck me.
In an ever-increasingly information-saturated world; this book offers needed medicine to our souls.
Read it again.......2004-04-11
I came to this book with the advantage of having sat under Dr. Mulholland in 4-5 courses including 2 on Biblical exegesis. The title of this book "Shaped by the Word", is 100% representative of his view of scripture. Mulholland very effectively teaches us that we should approach the scriptures with our hearts and our minds full expecting to be shaped by the work of God through His Word. Mulholland effectively communicates to us that when we always lead our study of scripture with reason our hearts will not be formed as God intends.

power reading.......2007-08-11
This is a great book. Rick didn't make you feel you had to read everything fast!Down to earth guy.Don't hesitate to buy this great book!
Value is mostly in the structure, not dense content...........2007-05-10
I agree with the spotlight review that says this book does not contain a lot of content and that much of it appears to be padded. However, despite the simple approach, it will teach you to read faster. While, the book is light on content, it is not quite as light on content as some of the reviews would have you believe. There are certainly more than two important concepts in the book.
However, the most valuable aspect of this book is that it offers a structured program and lots of support and encouragement. It is difficult to change old habits and this book gives you a good track to run on. I recommend it, but you may want to augment is with additional materials. I also think the "why" explanations for various practices is useful and valuable.

Not a bad little book, but a good deal of filler........2006-09-20
Rick Ostrov, Power Reading: The Fastest, Easiest, Most Effective Course on Speedreading and Comprehension Ever Developed (3/e) (The Education Press, 2002)
I will admit, in the spirit of full disclosure, that I read this book in something less than the month it's supposed to take, and completed it less than a week ago, so the full extent of Ostrov's tutelage has not yet taken root in my head. So I can't attest, ultimately, to the efficacy of the course itself. I can just tell you about the book.
It's not a badly-written little thing at all. And while the main obstacle that Ostrov sees to people reading to their full potential is one I discovered on my own seven or eight years ago (and have been struggling to overcome since; I'm hoping that by the end of next month, following these exercises, I'll have done it), I understand that most people probably haven't figured it out yet, and am not going to deduct points on that basis.
The bottom line is that if you want to read faster, this is worth looking into. I can't guarantee it will work, of course, because everyone's different. I can tell you that the problems Ostrov addresses are quite common, and the solutions he offers to them are common-sense solutions, though he might have offered a few more pointers on how to get around certain things, rather than just pointing them out and saying "this is something you need to overcome if you're going to be a true power reader." But really, it's quite an inexpensive book for the possible rewards. ***

A great guide for accountable talk!.......2007-07-23
I'm an elementary teacher who has seen firsthand the power of getting kids to talk about their reading and thinking. This book shows you how to do just that! It was affirming for me to see that what I have been doing in the classroom was the right thing to do. This book is a great guide to harnessing the power of accountable talk for truly powerful instruction. I highly recommend it.
Book Description
Continuing the case for free voluntary reading set out in the book's 1993 first edition, this new, updated, and much-looked-for second edition explores new research done on the topic in the last 10 years as well as looking anew at some of the original research reviewed. Krashen also explores research surrounding the role of school and public libraries and the research indicating the necessity of a print-rich environment that provides light reading (comics, teen romances, magazines) as well as the best in literature to assist in educating children to read with understanding and in second language acquisition. He looks at the research surrounding reading incentive/rewards programs and specifically at the research on AR (Accelerated Reader) and other electronic reading products.

In order to learn how to read: READ!.......2007-05-03
throw away all your phonics rules and worksheets and Hooked on's.
If you wish to read, then read.
If you want to teach others to read, give them something they will read.
Lower your standards. Read the cereal box, the soup can, Calvin and Hobbes, Incredible Hulk, Barefoot Gen, Maus, whatever absolutely they want to read. Just read. Just do it.
The great Dr. Krashen here shows you how.
Here in this second edition, updated to the latest research of 2004 which serves to confirm his earlier conclusions, Dr. Krashen gives us and our students permission to read whatever interests us, so long as we will read.
By reading we learn to read.
No brainer.
Few people know that the great American comedian of film and stage WC Fields began his vaudeville career as a fantastic juggler, manipulating cigar boxes and pool cues and balls, etc. with great skill and alacrity. After years of this someone gave him a manual of How to Juggle, which had so many rules and advice, including regarding breathing and concentration, that in his next performance he failed while he tried to remember and observe the rules of good juggling. He could no longer concentrate as he focused on concentrating. He later recovered his incredible skills when he could finally again forget the rules and just juggle.
Same with reading. Throw away those high priced "how to read" and phonics books. Just read. The industry gives you nothing to really read, just exercises with no benefit and little interest. Just read what you want and you will read.
Only the great publication houses with phonics programs and worksheets to sell at a high price tell us (and the big government that now runs our schools) otherwise. There is too much profit to be lost, and too much lobbying going on in the halls of our state houses and Congress, and the w White house.
By the way, why does the current Secretary of Education have absolutely no experience in any kind of education? Kind of like that FEMA guy, or Gonzo, etc., etc. Still she forces us to buy worksheets instead of letting us READ freely in order to learn how to read. Library funds are decimated while the industry reaps great profit and the government its lobbying bribes.
It is in reading that we read. It is in reading that our reading skills grow, no matter what you read. As you read lower level materials, your mind will automatically seek more challenging materials and reach for more. After Marvel you will want Tolkein. After Harry Potter you will hunger for James Joyce, forever. And then Dante and the Bible remain.
I have been a bilingual teacher and practitioner for many decades, as my grandmother before me. I recall from my first hearing of words and of speech my bilingual Church (Latin with occassional English, briefly), etc. Dr. Krashen's method here serves all students, especially our bilingual students developing reading skills in their most comfortable language which are applicable later to the target language (here ENglish) without even their being aware of it. They will wonder when you taught them to read in English.
This book is based on solid research and bursts most of the popular and powerful misconceptions and myths regarding teaching methods and politicians with profitable interests who would stop those strategies which are most effective.
Please study this book carefully for the scientifically proven truth, based on reliable research methodology.
In order to learn how to read, read. Whatever you choose, whatever interests you, but easy reading, within your frustration level, within your enjoyment level.
There's plenty of good stuff to read right here on the amazon. Check out my reviews for a few!
And then read to your family, too, in joy and in peace, and relearn the love of reading together. Turn off that television and just read already!
I made a change........2007-01-06
I teach ESL at the middle school level. This book was so powerful and convincing that I immediately changed my lesson plans to include SSR on a daily basis.
The Power of Silent Sustained Reading.......2006-11-10
I am the Library/Media Specialist for a school district in Alaska on a grant to increase literacy through literature. I heard Stephen D. Krashen speak at a school librarian convention and was so impressed that I read this book. The district has Silent Sustained Reading as its number one directive to all the teachers, but the idea is difficult for some teacher's to accept. I am hoping that by lending this book to teachers we can get fuller compliance. Having taught children's literature class at the college level for six years, I have read a lot and firmly believe in the work done by Krashen as presented in this book.
Excellent Resource!.......2004-03-10
My friend casually slipped this book to me over the lunch table. She said I may find it helpful in my struggles teaching middle school and high school English to second language learners. Little did she know how helpful this book would be. After reading the book, I immediately consulted with my colleagues and we began a program of free reading. It's working! I actully have students thanking me for letting them figure out for themselves that they really didn't mind reading! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a very readable compilation of the research that's been done and how to apply it! Worth every penny!
Very Important Research.......2003-06-25
Stephen Krashen does a wonderful job of presenting an easy to read book on research concerning children and reading. The info provided can be extremely useful when ordering books and planning programming for children. Some parts of the book get dry and a little slow but overall the results are fascinating. The copyright date of 1993 makes the book slightly out of date and I would love to see a second edition of the book to see if anything has changed since then.

Aura Reading for Beginners.......2005-09-27
The book was delivered much sooner than I expected, howerver i thought i had ordered another book through Amazon that i have not received by Ernest Holmes. Not totally computer wise I may have not clicked enough times. may try again, two copies would not be a waste in my circle
Webster makes aura reading ACCESSIBLE.......2005-05-31
I found Webster's "Aura Reading for Beginners" informative without being overwhelming. Since I'm a beginner at reading auras, this book provided me with the tools to get started. It was presented in a matter-of-fact tone and had very clear instructions. The author goes through step by step how to start seeing your own aura and others' auras, then he progresses to seeing ground and radiant colors of the aura. There's also a section on aura clearing using various methods.
I've been trying to get started in taking the alternative path, but many of the books I've come across were either obscure or provided an overload of information. Webster makes aura reading accessible. My only suggestion to Webster would be to include in the next printing the types of music recommended for all chakras rather than just the first chakra. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone learning how to read auras.
It got me going on aura reading when other books failed.......2001-10-26
This book gave drills on how to TOUCH and feel and aura that worked well for me. I found I could really percieve this. It also explained the various layers of the aura, and I was surprised in this that I have always been able to see one part - the spiritual aura - as sort of a glow. I thought I wasn't really seeing auras because I couldn't see colors! Ater reading the book, I walked around malls and other places to look at people. Out of all those people, I succeeded in seeing only TWO auras. A man with a yellow aura, and a woman with a pink one. That's not much, but it's a start.
There was stuff in there about numerology that did not work for me. According to Kirlian photograhpy I have an indigo aura. According to numerology, I have a gold aura. Shucks. Gold is prettier!
I got the book from a library, and am considering purchasing a copy for myself because I found the information about the various colors was sufficiently useful to become a reference.
It works, but..........2001-07-23
Yes, the tips in this book DO help you to see auras. Let me make it easy for you. Cross your eyes for a second and look above someones head. Tah Dah!! Is that an aura? Okay, let's say it is.
My issue with the book is that it also presented other "paranormal" actives which have been disproved, as fact. ie. dowsing.
Do yourself a favor. Before reading/buying this book read something by The Amazing Randy.
Not as good as Smith's book.......1999-01-27
If you really want a failsafe way to see the aura, I recommend Mark Smith's book "Auras- See Them In Just 60 Seconds". It's also on Llewellyn, and is more entertaining as well. Webster's book isn't bad, it's just not in the same class as Smith's.

In the winter of 1945, on the tiny island of Iwo Jima, a ferocious, epic battle was fought, resulting in the loss of more than 48,000 lives and producing what was to become one of the most recognizable symbols of World War II: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the peak of Mount Suribachi. One of the six, Navy corpsman John Bradley, came away from this historical moment with a deep and mysterious silence about his role in the flag raising. Even his wife heard him speak of it only once in their 47-year marriage. After Bradley's death, his son James began to piece together the facts of his father's heroism, as well as that of the other five men, all of whom became reluctant heroes because of their presence during that fateful instant when the shutter clicked and created a wartime icon.
Based on James Bradley's Flags of Our Fathers for adults, this abridged version for younger readers retains the somewhat terse drama, intense heartbreak, and bittersweet triumph of the original narrative. Through his research on the event and the soldiers (three of the men were killed in combat within days of the flag raising), Bradley explores the dubious nature of heroism and the devastating effects of war. (Ages 14 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Now abridged for young people, Flags of Our Fathers is the unforgettable chronicle of perhaps the most famous moment in American military history: the raising of the U. S. flag at Iwo Jima. Here is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America.
In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima–and into history. The son of one of the flag raisers has written a powerful account of six very different men who came together in the heroic battle for the Pacific’s most crucial island.

A great story about a horrific, but successful battle. Written by the son of one of the flag raisers, it gives a realistic view of the horrors endured, and the magnificent bravery of our boys who went forth in droves to give of themselves, that the rest of us might live in freedom.
Captivating and Honest Truths About Leadership and Devotion To Brothers Lost in War.......2007-04-04
I was given this book by one of my patients and I simply could not put it down. I read it cover to cover in about a day and half. The descpriptions of the War and the men who fought in the battle raged on Iwo Jima were brought alive in this story. It is incredible to think so many people were deceived by the efforts and the spin tallied by the United States during World War 2. Yes, the spin was in the name of a good cause, but it is unfortunate it took so long to tell the real truths about the men who lost their lives and the bloody sacrifices made in the name of freedom in this country. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read and better understand what really happened on Iwo Jima and the aftershocks that rippled through our Country for years following this war.

A great book to read by Trevor Williams.......2007-04-02
This book is a salute to all the men of WWII and especially to those that served in Iwo Jima. It is an awesome book, one of the best books that I have ever read. I couldn't put it down.
James Bradley, the "Author", started to investigate his father Jack's service record, after his death. He never spoke of his time in service and especially what happened on the peak of Mount Suribachi. His father was one of the original 6 people in the famous photo from WWII taken during the flag raising in one of the bloodiest battles in history. The book was very descriptive and graphic, I could picture the battle in my mind.
Wrong book.......2007-03-09
It was not the book I thought was ordered. It was a student version which I didn't want. It is a good book otherwise, was delivered on time with no issues

Very informative.......2007-07-03
I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.
Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10
After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.
I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!
In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.
Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.
The best of the best!.......2005-12-03
I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.
Amazing insights.......2005-12-02
I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.
Almost useless.......2005-05-02
The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.
