Book Description
This dynamic health-and-wellness education program was developed at the Harvard Medical School by a leading clinician and an acclaimed curriculum designer. It addresses critical issues of body preoccupation and reduces risk for disordered eating in girls (grades 3-8). Emphasizing girls' personal power and overall mental and physical well-being, Full of Ourselves contains a range of upbeat units that foster:
* Increased self and body acceptance
* Healthier eating and exercise habits
* Leadership and media literacy skills
* A range of coping skills for resisting unhealthy peer and cultural pressures
Each unit ends with a "Call to Action" to help girls translate their new-found knowledge into positive action at school, home, and in their community. Older girls are trained as peer leaders and given the opportunity to pass along their learning to younger peers.
Evaluated with more than 800 girls, this primary prevention curriculum is the first of its kind to show sustained, positive changes in girls' body image, body satisfaction, and body esteem. Educators, health professionals, counselors, and parents will find Full of Ourselves the ideal resource for helping girls make healthy choices for themselves.
Book Description
What motivates people is an important consideration for captains of industry, commerce, and the public sector -- in fact anyone in a position of leadership. Leadership and Motivation explores the subject in depth. Leadership guru John Adair reassesses the theories of Herzberg and Maslow -- still the major contributors to our understanding of motivation -- in the context of Action-Centered Leadership, the concept pioneered and developed by the author.

50-50 rule + 8 motivation principles.......2007-07-20
This book is about leadership and motivation, and how both promote or demote creativity. It defines a leader as someone who has personal qualities and technical knowledge that, under a given situation, permit him or her to perform successfully a requisite function. The leader motivates people to follow him/her because everyone involved stands to gain. Everyone wins because the strategic and operational levels of the group "work harmoniously together as the organization's leadership team" (p.33).
Creativity activities, like innovations, depend on motivation, and hence the 50-50 rule. The rule states that "50% of motivation comes from within a person and 50% from his or her environment, especially from the leadership encountered there" (p.). From here the book describes two psychological theories of motivation: Maslow's theory and Herzberg's theory. Maslow's theory holds that motivation depends on physiological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization needs. The more basic (biological) the needs, the easier it is to motivate a person from without. The higher level the needs, such as self-actualization, the more motivation must come from within a person.
For Herzberg creative efforts are like work. As with work motivation is determined by the satisfaction of people's higher needs. A safe working environment is often a stronger motivator than a high salary. Nice stuff.
The last parts of the book outline eight principles on "how to motivate others", beginning with the enthusiasm of the motivator. I resist the temptation to describe all the principles for fear of spoiling your reading of the book. Suffice to say the book is impressive. It is well organized. Each chapter has a "Key Points" section. Chapters also start and end with a memorable quotation from motivational leaders of all kinds. A very good book, indeed!

Delightful and Enlightening Little Book.......2007-05-11
Leadership expert, John Adair, has come up with a delightful and enlightening little book on effective leadership. He succintly explains the key elements of successful leaders. Citing various sources and using a unique presentation style, he highlights the fundamental aspects of leadership which are so critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment.
If you are seeking to be an outstanding leader where you do not have to rely on your position or authority to reach organisational goals, then I recommend you to read this book. You will, among other things, learn to set a shared vision and motivate followers to willingly and enthusiastically work towards the achievement of the shared goals.
Overal, an awesome and practical book on inspiring leadership.
What is leadership?.......2007-03-17
'Leadership is action: not position': In summary, this is the key to effective leadership.
This is one of those books where most statements would appear to be self-evident truths. So why, then, is it so difficult to develop effective leaders? And why do so many leaders rely on formal structures and authority?
This slender book is full of insights into leadership. It draws on a number of sources and provides food for thought both for experienced leaders (who may have become so caught up with the urgent that they've forgotten the important) as well as those embarking on the management journey.
The presentation style may not suit all readers, but whether you are seeking to find the keys of effective leadership or to reflect on their use, there is something in this book.
'If you wish to lead others you must first learn to lead yourself.'
Recommended.

Highly Recommended!.......2004-05-19
This short volume collects some of the most time-honored principles of leadership and compiles them in a series of short, easy-to-read chapters. Author John Adair draws on some unlikely sources for his material, finding inspiration even in Cromwell, the fanatical Puritan revolutionary; in the experience of the German army during World War II and in other characters and events not usually cited in management tomes. Adair's classic on leadership, now reissued, is a very useful handbook that resembles inspirational reading more than an expository how-to. On the downside, the book needs tightening. In particular, the author's lists of "key points" tend to be vague, passive and general. Nonetheless, we believe that gem seekers will find useful nuggets of leadership counsel here and that business readers will enjoy the intriguing array of quotable stories and sources.

Developing Leadership Talent.......2007-02-23
This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking book on leadership development by a world renowned leadership guru. In "How to Grow Leaders: The Seven Key Principles of Effective Leadership Development", John Adair outlines the various theories, approaches and concepts of leadership development and training and distils them into seven key principles of leadership development. Using his wide and deep knowledge and expertise in the leadership field, he explains how organisations can recruit, select, train, and develop leaders who are capable of formulating and articulating a shared vision for their organisations or units, motivate people and facilitate the achievement of organisational, team and individual goals.
I was particularly impressed by the gracious and thorough acknowledgments in the book of the thinking and research of others. Even when the authors point out the weaknesses and limitations of a particular piece of work, they praise the positive aspects of that work in kind and thoughtful ways. This is one of the few academic books I have read that took such a considerate approach.
The book beautifully elaborates on the thinking processes that companies use to grow leaders so as to achieve competitive advantage I use the book as a quick reference guide and I find it very useful and helpful. This book carries pertinent information, but it is organised and written in such a way that is easily digestible. The book is recommended as a resource kit for the leadership trainer or aspiring leaders.
Best Leadership book of all times! .......2006-11-10
If read carefully! Will change your leadership style!
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-08-30
Rarely does a revolutionary write the history of his own revolt. However, that's exactly what John Adair does in this book. Adair is respected internationally in the field of leadership. His 1968 classic, `Training for Leadership', was a pioneering volume on leadership development. Although his work initially received relatively little attention in the U.S., it contributed to the current "leadership revolution," which has had a powerful impact on how companies train leaders. Today, in part thanks to Adair and others like him, companies no longer assume that "you either have it or you don't" when it comes to leadership potential. They are more willing to accept the idea that managers can be leaders, too, and should be trained for that role. Adair's book doesn't just peer in the rearview mirror of history - it casts a steady, discerning gaze at the road ahead as well. Using elegant, thoughtful prose enhanced with apt anecdotes and quotations, Adair establishes seven key principles of leadership development. His intriguing conclusion: while companies may mold the raw material of leadership, only societies and families can actually provide it. If "lead, follow or get out of the way" is your motto, we say have confidence - John Adair is marching to his rightful place at the head of the leadership pack. A must read.

Effective Leadership.......2007-02-23
This is an enlightening book on leadership by a world renowned leadership guru who is an internationally acclaimed writer, teacher and consultant. Adair explains the clear distinction between management and leadership and also highlights the fact that leaders are not born but made. Hence the challenge to organizations that even though they tend to be over-managed and under-led, the situation can be rectified through effective leadership development programmes.
Adair had an extensive military, business, and academic backgrounds which influenced gave him a lot of hands own experience and interest in leadership and how it can be effectively deployed for the benefit of an organisation. In this book, Adair illustrates how leaders can inspire their subordinates to achieve outstanding performance through effective management of the three variables namely the individual, the team and the task. Through having a clear shared vision, he explains how leaders can motivate their people to give off their best.
This is a well written book that is interesting to read in which Adair managed to combine provocative ideas and an accessible style.
A Good Read!.......2004-06-04
Leadership guru John Adair talked with a bright young executive about leaders and the tenets of leadership, and recorded the conversations in this unique, philosophical book. Adair addresses tough questions about leadership and drills down beyond management and deep into human nature. He doesn't bother with leadership buzzwords, but instead discusses in meaningful terms the qualities that make a leader effective. People aren't born leaders, Adair says, they are made. Although the book is a bit too philosophical at times, the conversations between the author and the young executive are thought provoking, and the quotes peppered throughout the book are memorable. If you aspire to transform your management abilities into true leadership skills, we encourage you to sit down with the professor and his young protégé and enjoy the conversation.
Review from Book Sleeve.......2003-08-26
The Inspirational Leader, a new classic from the pen of John Adair, reinforces his argument that leaders are not born but made. Taking the form of conversations between a young chief executive and the author, it explores the nature and practice of leadership. The key skills are revealed for anyone to adopt and use to inspire and encourage others. Though provoking and accessible.

Extensive research.......1999-01-22
An extensive research to come out of Hartford Theological Seminary, which details quite importantly the life of clergy. However, I would argue that much of the comment is equally applicable to male clergy, so the book is not as exciting and as groundbreaking as one would perhaps expect. Similarly, from a feminist perspective, I was somewhat surprised to find a comment in the book which tells us that women clergy are often more able to go where they are needed in small communities because their husbands will have good jobs. Surely this is a step backwards? Otherwise a good read.
