Book Description

In the spirit of Rick Pitino's New York Times phenomenal bestseller Success Is a Choice, living legend Cal Ripken, Jr., presents an inspiring guide to overcoming any challenge and building a life you love.

Baseball's all-time Iron Man, Cal Ripken, Jr., retired from baseball in 2001 after breaking countless records, including Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played (Ripken played 2,632). Ripken is admired by thousands of fans not only for his relentless perseverance, but also for his unparalleled integrity. Now, in a stirring book that draws on his exhilarating career as well as the wisdom of his legendary father, Ripken shares rousing advice centered around his proven 8 Elements of Perseverance:
The Right Values: hard work, excellence, honesty, and integrity

Anticipation: strategies for creating your own opportunities
Trusting Relationships: how to build them in even the most turbulent environments
Life Management: making time to enjoy the journey
The Courage of Your Convictions: insight into how Ripken not only broke but far exceeded numerous records Cal Ripken is a sought-after advisor to fans from all walks of life.

5 out of 5 stars Get in the Game: 8 Elements of Perserverance that Make the Difference.......2007-09-28

This book provides extremely useful guidelines in dealing with situations we all eventually run into in our lives. While alluding to baseball related examples, it does not simply dwell solely on recounting Mr. Ripken's impressive baseball accomplishments or relate amusing/interesting anecdotes. Instead it gives thought-provoking insights into two all too fast-disappearing basic axioms in our country's psyche: "practice makes perfect," and "do unto others." I highly recommend this book for everyone, especially young people still in their formative years. In fact, it presents an excellent opportunity for parents to reconnect with their child(ren) by reading it aloud and together, with discussion centering on each of the eight elements as they are completed.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball analogy of the game of life.......2007-08-29

Get in the Game is not only a book about Cal Ripken Jr., his consecutive games streak and his fine career. It's a recap of some simple but overlooked values.

Using his core strength in baseball to describe his thinking, the reader will not only appreciate some particular plays in his career, but also down-to-earth ways of approaching things in life.

5 out of 5 stars If at first you don't succeed................2007-08-17

Life's little lessons taken from one who knows. Good title. Inspirational! Thanks Cal.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Ripken Knocks it Out of the Park.......2007-07-11

This is an excellent book by one of our modern-day greats: Cal Ripken, Jr. A native of Aberdeen, Maryland, he spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. He broke a record that many said would stand forever, and this book parallels the former holder of that feat, Lou Gehrig, with a treasure trove of quotes about the latter's life. In a sense, we learn as much about the character and perseverance of Mr. Gehrig as we do about Mr. Ripken.

One early quote set the tone for the entire book:

"I just played because I loved the game, and because I had been taught certain principles that prevented me from backing away from anything."

Mr. Ripken chronicled his youth, the special relationship with his father, Cal, Sr., and then explained in concise fashion his eight principles for perseverance. Some themes related directly to baseball, while others are about life itself.

Here are the eight elements:

Right Values
Strong Will to Succeed
Love What You Do
Preparation
Anticipation
Trusting Relationships
Life Management
The Courage of Your Convictions

This is a very entertaining and informative book. Thank you for the opportunity to review it.

5 out of 5 stars An education in more ways than one........2007-06-12

I am not now nor have I ever been a baseball fan. It just never appealed to me. But Cal Ripken has been heralded as the nicest guy in baseball and the sub-title ("8 elements of perseverance that make a difference" was definitely attractive, so I read the book.

I'm glad I did.

Ripken interweaves a literal history of baseball into his core message of how persevverance plays out in a ball game and life. It's an interesting, informative approach. I can see why Ripken has succeeded in his motivational speaking career as he did is his baseball career: life literally starts anew each day for this guy. Yesterday's msitakes and regrets are left behind. One of the most fascinating parts of the book for me are Ripken's descriptions of team work in baseball and how it works. Frankly, because I've never been a fan, I didn't realize just how much cooperation and coordination is required on the field.

Overall, a very worthwhile read and uplifting.

Michael Eisner, Jack Welch, Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie- imagine that you could consult at will with the world's greatest business managers, past and present, whenever you were faced with a crucial management decision. The Book of Management Wisdom lets you do just that. This unique resource offers insight into how these and scores of other legendary business managers have triumphed over the conflicts, challenges, and dilemmas that come with the territory. Never before have the deepest insights of such a large and diverse group of brilliant managers been collected into a single informative and inspiring volume.

The Book of Management Wisdom brings together the essays and speeches of more than fifty of the most successful business managers of all time and presents their ideas, tips, and management secrets in their own words. Drawing on their personal experiences, these world-class managers offer a range of practical advice, case studies, humorous anecdotes, and management philosophy. You'll hear from Sam Walton on creating a corporate culture, Lee Iacocca on his famous skip meetings, and Michael Dell on his "campaign of internal evangelism." Klaus Luft details what American CEOs can learn from German management; Harold Geneen describes the essential qualities of great managers; and Thomas Watson weighs in on what growth and change have taught us. These are just a few of the major figures who reveal fascinating details of their characters and personalities as they educate, enlighten, and entertain you with their often surprising views on the most compelling issues faced by managers in every corner of the business world.

For easy reference, these essays and speeches are organized into eight categories, each of which highlights a certain set of management tools and techniques and how to use them. These include essential qualities of great managers; productivity, empowerment, and conflict management; hiring, firing, and day-to-day management; the power of technology; lessons from around the world; evolution of the organization; bashing bureaucracy; and reengineering and transformation. Each essay is preceded by a brief introduction that places it in historical perspective and offers interesting and insightful information about the author's life and career. Highlighted passages call your attention to each author's most pithy, profound, or quirky ideas.

Offering timeless wisdom and practical advice from the most successful business managers ever, The Book of Management Wisdom is must reading for managers at every level, from the junior executive cubicle to the presidential suite.

Praise for The Book of Management Wisdom

"This book is worth referring to time and again for enduring truths that transcend the turbulence of the business landscape." -Warren Bennis, Distinguished Professor of Business Administration, University of Southern California, and coauthor, Co-Leaders: The Power of Great Partnerships

Pearls from The Book of Management Wisdom

"Dealing with conflicts lies at the heart of managing any business. As a result, confrontation facing issues about which there is disagreement can be avoided only at the manager's peril."-Andrew S. Grove

"Never hire your friends. I have made this mistake three times and had to fire all three. They are no longer my friends."-David Ogilvy

"It's absolutely essential to let your people express themselves. And that means letting them make mistakes. You've got to allow them to walk into your office and say, 'Boss, I blew it.' That's called growing."-Lee Iacocca

"For us, the issue wasn't whether people would waste time on the Internet, but whether they would use the Internet enough. Not to become completely familiar with a transformative business tool like the Internet is just foolish-especially when it's an integral part of your company's strategy and competitive advantage."- Michael Dell

"A society which values MBAs, lawyers, and financial wizards over engineers and product planners is moving in the wrong direction."-Akio Morita

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Unique Resource.......2000-11-04

Peter Krass has edited the Wisdom Series series which includes this volume. Each anthologizes brief essays by different "icons of business." A brief bio of each author precedes her or his essay. In the Introduction, Krass asserts that "Management boils down to this: Whether you're into management-by-walking-around, management-by-objective, management-by-exception, or management-by-crony, it's the attitude to the job that matters most.. He then suggests that "The Legends included [in this book] offer a complete arsenal of techniques, ideas, and instructional anecdotes" to help you address your own needs. Krass organizes the 53 essays within the following framework:

Part I: Essential Qualities of Great Managers

Part II: Productivity, Empowerment, and Conflict Management

Part III: Hiring, Firing, and Day-to-Day Management

Part IV: The Power of Technology

Part V: Lessons from Around the World

Part VI: Evolution of the Organization

Part VII: Bashing Bureaucracy

Part VIII: Reengineering and Transformation

Of the 53 essays, the ones I found most valuable are "How to Make Confrontation Work for You" (Andrew S. Grove), "Creating a Culture" (Sam Walton), "Managing Creativity" (John Sculley), "Managing Crown Princes" (David Ogilvy), "Friction Freedom" (Esther Dison), "The Mind of the Strategist" (Keniche Ohmae), and "Removing Walls" (John F. Welch, Jr.). A wide range of individuals discuss an even wider range of business issues. My suggestion is to select a topic or two of greatest interest and dive in. Because business circumstances can so often change so rapidly and (sometimes) unexpectedly, what you learn from what you read today may well help you to prepare more effectively for an uncertain future in which a new peril or opportunity emerges. Moreover, my guess is that there will be several other essays in this book to help you then, also.

I have reviewed most of the other volumes in this series and also recommend each of them highly.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Helped me write MUCH BETTER descriptions.......2004-02-01

I had to read this book for work. The author suggests reading one chapter a day, which is pretty much how I did it, with one exception.

I found the material to be much easier to digest when I read it only one chapter a day. I wasn't bombarded with all of this new stuff that I had to remember and implement into my descriptions.

Having all of the pictures really helped because it illustrates the points that the author is trying to get across.

I suggest keeping the book close by when your brain just goes to mush and you can't think of the benefit of this gadget. Reread Appendix A and try to answer the 20 questions in there. It will help you come up with something.

If your description just doesn't make much sense or parts are out of order and you can't figure out why, reread Appendix B, it have all of the "rules" the author presented in the book with a brief explanation of each.

4 out of 5 stars A copywriter's resource that really sizzles!.......2000-04-19

Very helpful! Typical of many books written by veteran admen, the text is broken up into bite-sized chunks with snappy headlines, but in this case the format serves the message well. Lewis' tone is chatty and informative, there are lots of good ad examples, and best of all, each chapter begins with a brief writing assignment. I found it a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars Non Fiction.......2007-09-03

The Damn Good Resume Guide : a Crash Course in Resume Writing is definitely a useful book, and well done. It has a lot of examples of different styles and types of document that you can use a basis for something of your own.

Definitely worth getting if you want some advice in this area.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful tool for a beginner.......2007-05-14

Having not written a real resume before, this was the perfect tool for me. I was able to construct a good resume in two days and have already gotten multiple job interviews using it.

5 out of 5 stars The name says it all!.......2003-06-07

I bought this book back in the mid-1990's when I was looking to make a career shift. To say that the guide is merely effective would be an understatement. This guide is AWESOME! If you follow the instructions and utilize the layouts in the examples for the type of job you are seeking, you will soon find your resume will consistently float to the top of the pile at nearly every place you apply. You WILL get phone calls! Of course, the rest is up to you -- a resume alone will not get you the job. But, when properly written and designed, they will help you get your foot in the door. I used this book to help me craft a resume for an out-of-work friend who was always amazed at how easy it was for me to locate employement, and he, too, started getting phone calls. He was employed within a month.
USE IT! IT WORKS!

5 out of 5 stars Best if you are in a hurry........2003-03-01

This book has ten steps to writing a good resume. For those of you who might think that this is too many, everything is so concisely written that it is easy to get through the book in a day and end up with a great resume. Other books on resumes that I have read fill up their pages with fluff or well-duh information, not so this book. Although some may complain about the seemingly lack of variety in the jobs showcased (I tend to disagree), the ten steps themselves may be applied to a resume for any job. The only drawback to the sample resumes in this book that I can see is that they are a bit wordy (which contrasts with the rest of the book). However, you can aways trim the fat in your own resume.

I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to people that want a consise explanation of how to write a resume, and/or someone that needs to produce a resume in a short amount of time.

5 out of 5 stars Brief Book that Really Helps.......2003-02-16

This short book describes ten steps to wriging resumes. Examples include general resumes, student resumes, and military transition resumes. Has a list of action verbs. Employers comment on some of the resumes. Brown)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read!.......2007-09-04

This book is truely packed with valuable information! A "Must Read" for all you "multi hat" type small business owners!

1 out of 5 stars Careful--He has people in his coaching firm write the reviews.......2007-07-22

I saw this book on business coaching advertised in Entrepreneur magazine next to a large advertisement for Action Coaching--a franchise. Is it not strange that the names of each reviewer can be "googled" and most, if not all, are members of "Action Coaching." Evidently no one outside of his "firm" found the book worth reviewing. This smacks of unethical behavior--your subordinates and friends writing superlative remarks about your work.

His books may be worthwhile...but I won't pad his pockets.

5 out of 5 stars Quit Running Ads that Don't Work!.......2007-06-18

There's a big difference between an ad that sells your products and services and one that simply drains your bank account. This book shows you how to effectively use your hard-earned dollars to generate the maximum impact for your business. Brad Sugars discusses 149 different strategies to help you pinpoint your ad budget for greatest results. I particulary like the marketing campaign analysis which helps me objectively decide which ads to run and how much to spend. The book covers direct mail, print, radio, TV, and internet mediums and helps me to determine which is best suited to my business. I enthusiastically recommend it to any owner or decision-maker who spends money to advertise their business!

5 out of 5 stars Instant Advertising.......2006-06-30

A must read for anybody who wants the maximum benefit from his advertising budget. It is simple to read, gets straight to the point and unlike most business books addresses the practical ways of getting things done. I can never look at ads the same way again after reading this book. What is amazing is that after the reading this book, I applied the concepts in the book to look at my clients ads. I have a new client thanks to the knowledge I gained from this book. Worth your money 10 times over!!!

Book Description

An informative and up-to-date resource for job seekers who are looking for solid direction from Fortune 500 executives. War, recession, and political uncertainty have forced many corporations to regroup, and downsizing has been the dreaded outcome for millions of workers. Fired and laid-off employees are swelling the ranks of job seekers and creating stiff competition for a dwindling number of positions. In this harsh business climate, many applicants are finding that just getting in the door for an interview poses an enormous challenge.

So what's happening on the other side of the desk-as employers review huge piles of prospective resumes? What catches their attention? What turns them off? Author Brenda Greene surveyed 50 Fortune 500 employers to find out and gained valuable insight into just what it takes to command attention and interest in a crowded field. Packed with sample resumes and cover letters that represent what hiring managers, directors, and vice presidents want to see, Get the Interview Every Time shows and tells what's expected versus what's rejected.

Readers will learn how to:

• Research the company and its opportunities before sending any resumes.

• Distill all of their talent and experience into a few well-chosen words.

• Showcase their communication skills through a well- crafted cover letter.

• Avoid hype and ""resume-speak""-easily spotted and reviled.

• Determine the resume style that looks and works the best.

• Design and submit an electronic resume correctly.

Get the Interview Every Time breaks down the monumental task of landing an interview into a series of manageable steps, easy to understand and inspiring to follow. Designed to transform confused, disheartened job applicants into savvy, prospective employees, Get the Interview Every Time shows how to ""open the gates"" through sensible, targeted self-marketing.

4 out of 5 stars More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books.......2007-10-05

This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.

The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-04

This book was very helpful. It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes. Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other. That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2006-03-14

This book was very well done. There are many sample resumes in the back and also sample cover letters. The content of the book explained what to put on your resume and cover letter and what employers are looking for. This is a great resource for anyone looking for some guidance on how to develop their resume and cover letter.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Layout.......2006-02-25

Excellent presentation of the material in an easy to follow format. Allows the reader to pinpoint exact areas of interest, and contains only information pertainent to the title.
A must have for writing resumes with confidence and skill.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Resource.......2005-09-14

I highly recommend this book for people who want a complete approach to finding a new job. The author took the time to interview tons of HR people at top-notch companies and share valuable insights with the reader.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent resume resource for those without a clue.......2007-08-25

This book will undoubtedly save time for those who are frustrated by the process of writing their own resume. Having reviewed more resumes than I can count at this point, I can fully appreciate the value in showing people how to scrutinize their own work. The trouble that I've found is that people are too close to their own histories to do a really good job of marketing themselves. They know too much. What this book shows as much as anything is that getting a professional review on a resume is worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for the cover letter 'rookie'.......2007-01-26

101 Best Cover Letters is a good buy if you are struggling with putting together just the right words for a great cover letter. Gives some "common sense" tips, but also a variety of styles (i.e. responding to classified ad, how to incorporate a reference, specific careers) for your letter. Obviously you still have to make your cover leter your own, but this book definitely helps get the wheels turning.

1 out of 5 stars 101 Flattering cover letters for sycophants.......2006-06-16

The example letters are uniformly dreadful. Marginal grammar and usage combine with a sacherine style aimed at kissing up to second-raters. These letters are guaranteed to repell anyone with whom one would really like to work.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT Book, BUT NOT in Digital Format.......2004-02-12

Great examples of cover letters with explanation of what makes them great, but I only know this because I bought the printed version after not being able to read the examples AT ALL in the downloaded digital version. I even tried reading on a 19" high resolution monitor using the PC version of Microsoft Reader, .

The problem is that even though Microsoft Reader allows one to change the fonts of the print to suit the reader, scanned images like ALL the cover letter examples are not scalable, so it is impossible to distinguish an e from an o, l from an i, and so on.

Amazon should not sell books with graphics and fixed images in digital format, or at least should warn customers of the issue before they pay to download a book in digital format that has over 70% in unscalable, unreadable format.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE NEWBIES or EXPERTS OUT THERE!.......2003-06-08

This book was a great investment! The cover letters give you examples to use in your own letter and show you the strengths found in each cover. I actually took a highlighter to this book and highlighted my favorite lines and ideas out of certain letters. I then implemented them into my letter. Great for everyone, the professional or the inexperienced. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars I was very disappointed with this purchase........2002-08-28

I was very disappointed with this purchase. The only subject the letters cover is for use in getting a job. If I had known that it was strictly targeting getting a job I would have never purchased this. I was looking for a book that had a variety of letters you would find useful in the business world, not getting a job.

3 out of 5 stars I wanted it to be better.......2007-10-03

As a professional resume writer with experience in senior executive-level resume writing, I bought this book because I was in a creative slump and was looking for some inspiration. This book contains examples of resumes written in very traditional, very standard formats, but nothing inventive. I also would have liked to see more about cover letters.

What I found most unhelpful about this book was the amount of text the author devoted to touting his own writing prowess and the shameless plugs throughout for his resume writing services. On a side note, I find myself suspicious of the glowing 5-star reviews given anonymously by "a reader"...

5 out of 5 stars I would sleep with this book under my pillow if I could..........2005-05-15

An excellent book! Absolutely one of the best exec. resume books out there. This is a must read. I reference it whenever I have a question, and think this is one of the best comprehensive resume books out there. Thanks! Laura, Apex Resumes, www.apexresumes.com

5 out of 5 stars don't leave work without it.......2003-04-11

I've used Asher's Executive Bible for several years now. My brother recently lost his job at IBM and I immediately bought him a copy of his own.

In this market your resume is little more than another unwanted piece of junk mail. You need to be polished and must stand out from an increasingly large crowd to find a good position and further your career.

Asher's Executive Bible gives you practical examples of actually resumes. He points out successful presentation techniques and styles.

There's no need to dumb down your resume and grovel for a job - any job. Asher's Bible has allowed my to manage my career onward and upward. He can do the same for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not enough.......2003-01-11

I agree with one of the earlier reviewers; this book is more a compendium of (many) examples than a practical guide to making your resume shine.

As a certified professional, full-time executive resume writing expert, I know that personalized information and details can make all the difference. (NOT to be confused with personal details and information, like hobbies.)

Take care not to copy the resumes in this (or any) too exactly. This makes your resume too "cookie-cutter." It looks just like those created by inexpensive resume writing software (or cheap resume writing services).

... You're attempting to sell a very expensive product of uncertain quality to company management.

This book can help you, but remember that you can't afford NOT to have a professional-looking resume and marketing documents with the correct content.

    Good Luck,

    John Todd

2 out of 5 stars A lot of the same thing.......2001-05-31

I was not exactly thrilled with this book. It seems that the author mearly published all of the resumes he has written for clients rather than show some different forms and styles. Granted, there are many ideas to be gotten out of the book, but I would have liked to see some variety in the styles of the resumes. They all looked much the same. I think "Executive Resumes" by Steven Provenzano has been a much more helpful resume book
