Book Description
The Concise Rules of APA Style offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.
How does the Concise Rules differ from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? The Publication Manual remains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides guidance on designing research, identifying the parts of a scholarly article, understanding the process of journal publication, and submitting articles for publication. The Concise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.
In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, the Concise Rules provides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance for the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for referencing ideas and constructing error-free reference lists.
Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, the Concise Rules will travel easily from home to school to office.

Concise Rules of APA Style.......2007-10-13
This is an essential book if you're preparing papers that must follow APA style. It's official from APA, so you can count on the content. More detailed than a quick guide. The spiral binding makes it easy to use. If my 'easy way' guide doesn't have the answer, this concise guide does. Wouldn't be without it. Why didn't my uni profs tell me about this cheaper resource??? (The full-length guide costs about twice as much, if I remember correctly.)
book review.......2007-09-23
This book is a little confusing. Never arrived when ordered first. I had to reorder this item which finally arrived two months late.
Stefplans.......2007-05-12
I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.
APA guidlines review.......2007-05-11
good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.
Great Reference.......2007-03-22
This book is a great reference for the college student that is trying to figure out the APA Referencing Rules.

Book Description
Alex Rogo is the manager of a failing manufacturing plant who receives an ultimatum from corporate headquarters: Turn the situation around in three months or the plant will be scrapped. With help from a mysterious mentor, Rogo discovers a revolutionary new way to do business—a way for people in any field of endeavor to increase productivity, profitability, and personal fulfillment. A business book disguised as a novel, a love story about the manufacturing process, and an exhilarating adventure in human potential, The Goal is changing how America does business. First published in 1984, it became an underground bestseller; today it's used by thousands of companies and taught in hundreds of business schools. Includes the author's personal story, "My Saga." This third edition includes case study interviews. Professional readers recreate interviews that David Whitford, Editor at Large with Fortune Small Business, conducts with the author Eli Goldratt and with business professionals from General Motors, Thomson-Shore, Security Federal Banks and others who put the principles of The Goal into action.

Excelent business book.......2007-10-02
The plot of this book is set in a manufacturing environment.
The author does an excelent job at explainig the theory of constraints. And although I work in software engineering, I could directly see the applicability of everything I read to my job.
And the best part is that the book is written 'for the rest of us'. Even a kid could understand it!
a must have for anyone in a manufacturing environment.......2007-09-26
I purchased this book for a college class that I am taking in MGMT. However, after listening to this book, I could see where the Theory of Constraints applied to my job, now I don't work in a manufactuing environment, more of a repair facility. But I could not believe how I could relate the two. This book is good for the worker bees as well as Mgmt. As I work in one environment and am achieving to be in Mgmt, I could really see the principles being used in this book. Goldratt is a genius!!

Great Test Prep.......2007-09-20
This book was an excellent resource for me while studying for the Praxis II 0041. The book presented an organized view of the types of questions and sections within each test series. Although there are some incorrect answers, the practice test undoubtedly will help you gauge your level of preparation. I especially appreciated the book and resource list. I decided to read all the suggested novels (of while I read about 2/3) as additional preparation. I received my scores and I did very well, especially for someone who wasn't originally an English major. Again, I feel that this book does a wonderful job in helping one prepare for the Praxis II: English Subject Area tests.
Paid for Incorrect Answers!!!!!.......2007-08-31
I purchased the book Cliff Test Prep Praxis II: English Subject Area Assessment expecting that it would prepare me for the Praxis. Well while I was studying I discovered at least two questions in the practice test for th e 0041 section that gave incorrect answers! At first I was like what are the odds that a praxis prep book is incorrect, but then after confering with several English majors, I discovered that I was right and the book was in fact displaying incorrect answers. I have not recieved my Praxis scores yet, but I am seriously concerned. I passed the Praxis for general Content Knowlegde (0014) in June and I passed with 177 on my first try- but for that I used the ETS Prep book. Seriously, if you are reading this please buy the ETS book, not this one!!!
Good study guide but has at least one wrong answer in Practice Test.......2007-08-24
Do not use this booklet as your only study guide. Some of the questions are irrelevant and/ or ambiguous. In the 0041 practice test, the answer to number 45 is completely wrong. It also looks like Dr. Kern didn't edit the explanation of the answer for this question as well.
Helped me receive a perfect score.......2007-08-01
Despite the 0041 test being very obscure, the preparation questions and tests in this book helped me more than adequately prepare for the Praxis II exam. In fact, I was able to get obtain the highest score possible. I doubt that would have been possible without this resource. Thank you!
Well-organized with good detail.......2007-07-14
The book starts with some good test taking strategies and the content review is concise and well organized. Even though there was only one test per assessment area this book covered--I took the book's suggestion and took all of the tests since there is so much overlap in subject area.
I haven't taken the test yet, but I'm feeling much better about it after using this book. I definitely recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
If you plan to pass Praxis, buy this book!.......2007-09-22
I graduated college in 1987 and am hoping to teach through an alternative certification program. I took the Middle School Language Arts Praxis earlier this year and passed the first time, using the ETS Middle School Praxis Study Guide. Now I'm going to take the secondary English tests 0041 and 0042. I looked at this book at our local college library, but it was only for reference and could not be checked out. This book is a good study guide, key word being 'guide'. It gives you a list of authors to become familiar with, offers detailed explanations about types of test questions and how to best approach each, and IT DOES INCLUDE A PRACTICE TEST WITH CORRECT ANSWERS. It even gives detailed explanations on why each answer was the correct one. Praxis is a hard test. The questions are long, detailed and complicated. The practice questions in this book mirror actual test questions in style. If you're looking for a book with all the answers in it, good luck. But if you're searching for a book to help you know what areas to concentrate your studies in - then buy this one.
Solid Study Material.......2007-03-08
After going through this book and taking the practice test, I felt a lot more comfortable with the types of authors, literary movements, and literary devices the test was looking for. Only includes one practice test.
Does what it says.......2007-01-12
This is a great guide to show you what of the test content you do and don't know. Some reviewrs seemed upset it didn't provide straighforward answers for the test; it's not supposed to do that. The study guide is best used as just that: a guide to indicate what you need to study up on. if you buy it far enough ahead of time to be able to look at what you don't know, it's a great tool. The Praxis II tests are meant to assess potential teachers' knowledge of their subject area; frankly, if you need one book to give you the test answers, you may need to reconsider the field you're going into.
Over all: not a magic test-killing bullet, but a valuable resource if used properly.
So Frustrated!.......2006-07-28
I decided to enter a teaching program in July and learned that I would need to take PRAXIS on August 5th. I ordered this book from Amazon on July 1. Shipment kept getting delayed until the point that my order was listed as not shipping until after I took the test! I cancelled the order and tried to order directly from ETS, makers of the PRAXIS exam. After two weeks of waiting on them, I gave up. All along, I had checked out literature anthologies and literary handbooks from the library. I am so disappointed in Amazon, although the blame might lie with ETS for a lack of production. I thought this book would at least help me feel more secure, but it's not to be. Again, my recommendation is to browse literary terms, grammar books and anthologies of literature ... and know that even ordering a month in advance of the test might not be enough time to allow you to receive the study materials. Good luck!
SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2006-03-06
I just took this test on Saturday, and let me tell you I was extremely let down. I thought buying this book would be the greatest thing since sliced bread and it would be so helpful in my studying, etc. Well, it fails to let you know that one third of the actual Praxis II exam has to do with diagramming sentences and syntax. I know how to write a simple sentence, but I don't remember what a gerund is and where to put the adverb in a sentence when I am under pressure. The practice test in the book focuses mostly on what you have read and how well you can recognize writing styles. I was completely unprepared for the grammar section and it left me feeling like I failed. If you're really worried about the reading list I suggest picking up the Praxis book for the composition part of the test, which was much more helpful than this waste of $20.

Best so far -- Finally Learning Independantly is fun again!.......2007-09-14
I have been trying to learn Japanese independently now for quite some time, I have been even getting to the point of giving up because of difficulties. Each of the books that I've picked up seem to offer their own little niche in focus, and I have been having some difficulties because of the structure of those books and the way that some just throw things at you without a good format or presentation. This book has changed my experiences and eliminated a lot of the struggle for me.
I've found that the approach this book takes is almost like a course in school. Breaking down what you are learning into small portions that make sense. Start with numbers, then add a few letters at a time, then slowly integrate more, eventually replacing the English letters with the Japanese characters and sounds that you have learned. Some of the books don't even give you the proper pronunciation and that was the first thing the chapters do when they introduce the new sounds / characters you are using. The review questions and check-ups for each chapter and telling you what you need to review before moving to the next has really made me enjoy learning independently again!
I have even tried some of the learn by Manga and comic books that Amazon offers as well. I find that the material I learn in the Japanese from Zero! books is what I retain and the other books become reinforcement of that information. Each offer their own in the way of vocabulary, I would still recommend having a Japanese - English / English - Japanese dictionary handy for a quick reference.
Real-world Japanese.......2007-09-10
I was also a member of YesJapan from which the lessons in this book were drawn. There are some great interactive features that obviously can't be applied in this book, but the fact that JFZ is portable and has a built-in workbook is a big plus. (note: the "typos" mentioned in an earlier review refer to an early version of YesJapan, not this book) I bought this book for my niece who was having difficulty in her by-the-numbers high school Japanese class, and her grades and comprehension immediately improved. Highly recommended for students who want to learn practical, real-world Japanese.
Great book to learn hiragana.......2007-08-17
This is my first book on how "to read and write japanese" and I am quite happy with this purchase.
If you want to learn to speak japanese, there are better learning tools out there. I suggest invest your money and buy the more expensive Pimsleur audio series. Best learning guide I've used so far.
If you want to learn how to write hiragana, this book is very good. In fact, it is a very good companion to Pimsleur.
The lessons are small and easy to follow.
- It starts out teaching you romanji, and gradually introduces you to hiragana.
- It has plenty of writing exercises.
- When you learn a new character, the book immediately uses sentences which combines romanji and hiragana.
I am halfway through the book and I am quite comfortable with hiragana already. Looking forward to finish this book and start with Volume 2 and 3 and learn katakana and kanji.
You'll be Disappointed.......2007-07-27
I was a subscriber to the Trombley's website, which is based on this book. As another reviewer pointed out about the book, the website is littered with typos. The author is an native English speaker who went to school in Japan. He does not have a grasp of English grammar, so it's hard to trust his knowledge of Japanese. There is no logical system in place, no logical progression. It's a mish-mash of this and that, here and there. So you never really get a hand-hold on one thing that leads you to the next. It's all over the place. He's an interpreter, not a teacher, and it really shows. You'll learn very little from this one.
Good, but was it written by a non English speaker?.......2007-06-22
Overall, the book is very good, and it did help me learn Japanese, it's just that there are so many typos in the book! Also, there are some words that are said in the book (in Japanese, of course) that are not mentioned in the glossary, so you have to look them up yourself somewhere else. One last thing, the book has this "progressive" system, which is really good and I love it, it's just that sometimes the book "forgets" what you have learned, so there is stuff in Japanese that you have not already learned (sorry, that was hard to explain!). Dispite all these petty mistakes, it realy is a good book.

Customer Reviews:
great book for those in finance.......2006-06-20
This book is great if you're in the field of finance. This is not for the average consumer looking for investment advice. I've been in corporate financial planning and analyis for the past five years and always wondered how equity analysts built their models. This books will give you insight into their thinking and also give enough detail to build your own models. I would have rated it five stars if the book included a CD with his examples in Excel. The author does have website where you can download sample models.
for SELL-SIDE analysts only.......2006-01-14
I bought this book based on the strong reviews as a complement to Damodaran's classic on valuation, but felt disappointed.
To qualify my comments: First, I am not a sell-side analyst, and secondly, I haven't finished the book. After about 50 pages, I threw in the towel.
My first stylistic objection to the book is its low content density. There is tremendous repetition and examples are trotted out in excruciating detail, even where the conclusions are fairly obvious. For example, on p. 34: "At competitive equilibrium, the firm can identify no incremental investment opportunities likely to generate returns in excess of capital costs. Competitive equilibrium is often defined as a condition in which investment opportunities generate returns equal to capital costs, but existing investments continue to earn abnormal rates." To me these two sentences are already redundant. But in case you still didn't get it, further DOWN on the SAME PAGE: "...This situation is called economic equilibrium, or economic parity. What does equilibrium mean? When returns are forced down to capital costs, then economic rents and/or abnormal earnings disappear and no further incentive to enter the business exists".
But the most frequently repeated point of the first two chapters, is best summed up on p. 19: "As I say many times in the coming pages [and he's not kidding, there], equity analysis is not prophecy; it's opinion. It was never meant to be objective description, but it is strong advocacy." If you're the sell-side analyst, having to "dress up a pig" to help your firm gain some banking business, this book might offer some ideas. But where does this leave the consumer of such analysis? "It's the investor's job to 'diversify' by considering a variety of analysts' positions." (p.9)
I think better advice for the investor might be to learn how to perform sound analysis themselves. For that, I recommend Damodaran's book. I lost my faith in this book's intent to provide balanced (let alone predictive) analysis.
One of the Best.......2005-11-01
There are reams and reams of investment valuation books on the market -- that is obvious.
In my opinion, the three no one should be without are Applied Equity Analysis, Stephen Penman's monster tome "financial statements and...", and lastly, Aswath Damadoran's book, "investment valuation."
Most hyperventilating MBAs default to Damadoran; I really enjoy the simplicity behind Applied Equity Analysis.
Caution: Neither of the 3 are what you'd call "light reading."
If you have any money left, honorable mention goes to Cooke's "security analysis on wall street."
Probably the best.......2004-07-15
I've been looking for a practical step by step book on equity analysis from a practitioners viewpoint. This is it. Other books try to take shortcuts. This book does not take short-cuts, but neither is it bogged down with unncessary academic exercises. If you really want to understand how to do valuation and applied equity analysis I can't recommend any book more highly. It is head and shoulders above anything else out there. Penman's book (from Columbia Business School) is also good but it is a VERY serious and weighty book that probably should only be attacked after you have read this one. Get this book by English and you will not be sorry. I have spent way too much time reading hundreds of other books that weren't nearly as educational. Again, however, it is only for the serious investor.
Very readable, very insightful, and extremely practical.......2001-09-23
James English's "Applied Equity Analysis" is a how-to manual on evaluating stocks based on his 20 years of experience at JP Morgan. The book is very well-written and readable since the author employs plain english (no pun intended) to make his three major points: 1) accounting numbers--while by no means perfect--are excellent tools in evaluating stocks, 2) accounting-based stock valuation is superior to (but does not neccessarily supplant) cash flows, and 3) competition ensures that eye-popping financial performance doesn't last forever.
Contrary to another reviewer, English employs excellent examples to clarify and explain his points. Some examples: Gateway 2000's earnings history was used to explain how to find and interpret non-recurring items (NRI) on financial statements. Ratio analysis was demonstrated by looking at the PC industry in 1998. Emerson Electric was the company chosen to show why mature companies were still good buys. Many other examples abound, and English does a successful job in tying their relevance to his arguements.
But successful use of examples is not just the only strength of the book. The author also tackles a range of topics complete with insightful and clear discussions: the flaws of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Economic Value Added (EVA), financial statement analysis, fundamental analysis, etc.
A quick glance at the table of contents below gives you an idea of the scope of English's book. I highly recommend this book to not just Wall Street analysts, anyone who is interested in finding fundamental value in evaluating stocks instead of following the crowd.

How To Communicate Better: Mention That You Need The Book.......2001-05-10
This CD is a companion piece to a BOOK on communicating in business. With the book I am sure it would be quite useful but that is not included with this pricey CD set. Here is a sample of how each track is prefaced:
"Unit 8, Practice 1, Page 68. Listen to a model presentation based on the notes in your book."
This was a randomly chosen example. The track chosen was the second CD, second track.
While I can not adequately judge the quality of the combined CD and book without the book it appears to be a useful set. The set is a fairly basic introduction to professional communications targeted at the newly employed, professionals to whom English is a second language and students.
Book Description
Basic reading proficiency is key to success in all content areas, but attending to students’ literacy development remains a challenge for many teachers, especially after the primary grades. Knowledge to Support the Teaching of Reading presents recommendations for the essential knowledge about the development, acquisition, and teaching of language and literacy skills that teachers need to master and use. This important book is one result of an initiative of the National Academy of Education's Committee on Teacher Education, whose members have been charged with the task of creating a core knowledge base for teacher education.

For educators and educational administrators.

I feel that every teacher should consider owning this book for their own background knowledge of what legalities that can effect them in their profession.
School Law and the Public Schools: A Practical Guide for Educational Leaders (3rd Edition).......2007-01-09
Easy reading, informative, and and helpful reviews at the end of each chapter.

Great service from this seller. My item was sent to me immediately with a follow-up email to confirm delivery.
A "Make Sense" Guide For All Educators.......2000-10-30
The author wrote this book in such a manner that a high school government student could understand the majority of the legal discussion and implications for school leaders.
Today's educator would be remiss not to read this down to earth text and not pay attention to its contents while working in today's educational environments where one is constantly exposed to being sued.
The author provides the reader with clear and understandable legal definitions, administrative summaries, landmark cases, and interesting legal situations that have occurred in public schools across the United States.
Classroom teachers, school principals, superintendents, school board members, and graduate students all come away with a sense of "I will not do that again" after reading this very practical school law guide.
While the book does not address school integration and school finance issues from a legal stance, it does an excellent job of addressing all other aspects of educational law.
