Book Description

As a long-standing definitive work in the field, Building Communication Theory has given introductory readers a solid foundation in the essentials of communication theory. Infante, Rancer, and Womack have been praised for their clear and comprehensive presentation of various approaches to understanding human communication and the major theories within the structure of each approach. The Fourth Edition maintains these strengths. Complex material is presented in clear, user-friendly prose. In addition, the volume is grounded with compelling and realistic examples that engage the uninitiated and help them see the connection between theory and practical applications. Readers gain an appreciation of the importance of communication, the value and applicability of its teachings, and the richness of its philosophy.

2 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated, not enough information.......2005-11-13

This seems to have been written for the previous iteration of the BCMSN. There are some inaccuracies and I'd say that 40% of what's covered on the test is not in here. You will NOT be prepared for the test if you have only this. The Cisco Press and Exam Cram 2 are good but some practical knowledge is also required with the new test.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2004-04-29

This is the second book from the Sybex Cisco Certification series I have purchased (after Todd Lammle's excellent CCNA book), and I was equally impressed with this work.

The layout was up to the standard I expected, and I found the text flowed along nicely with sound explanations that were easy to understand. Some of the labs use CatOS-based switches, and I am told that Cisco is removing these from the exam, but they were useful to me as we still have some in our network.

I particularly liked the chapters on QoS and switch operation, which I thought were covered in good detail, and I found studying from this book to be a rewarding experience, both in exam success and educational terms.

Based on the quality of this book I shall be buying more from the same series when I prepare for the next exams in the CCNP certification.

2 out of 5 stars A sloppy production.......2004-03-06

I used the Cisco Press CCNA Certification Guide to pass the CCNA exam and then used the Sybex BCMSN Study Guide to study for the exams. Not only I found big different between the contents, I also found the production quite sloppy. Found some misprint in the book but according to sybex.com, there are no updates to this book, while there is a 4 page errata to the Cisco Press BCMSN Certification Guide, which I eventually pay an extra $50 for. Did the exam and found some terms which I have never found in the Sybex book while some of the chapters were not in the exam at all. Very surprised.

All in all the Cisco Press books are a much better candidate for CCNP and this book did not closely match the exam topics published by Cisco. I would not recommend this book to anyone studying for CCNP.

This is a good book on knowledge management. It provides an adequate historical reference and a succinct framework for the opportunities and incentives for KM but it is as of 2002. This book needs updating. It's not bad but is pre-wiki and web images are dated. Buy used...don't spend $40.00.

Review of Building the Knowledge Network: Best Practices, Tools, and Techniques for Putting Conversation to Work

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was written in a conversational tone, and pulled together all the different pieces I've been reading in many sources. It starts with a brief history of knowledge sharing/conversation/communications which I found fascinating (and I am not a history buff!). Nancy & Cliff compared the anti-conversational attitudes of the Scientific Management during the Industrial Age, showed how the Hawthorne Studies caused the shift from the organization to the worker, and information systems. With the emergence of computer networks, the knowledge explosion has shown no sign of abating.

They discussed how the lessons of the pioneers of early communities such as the WELL assisted communities of today to flourish. Trust became communities' foundation with open communications offering challenges to community managers/moderators/facilitators.

The authors' inclusion of quotes from the ideas of the "greats" in community building/managing and knowledge management (KM) such as Stephen Denning, Thomas Davenport, Etienne Wenger, Tom Peters, Michael Hammer and Howard Rheingold, among others offered powerful evidence to their premises. Throughout the book are helpful charts, checklists and other graphics.

A whole chapter was devoted to culture and the tools that enable differing cultures. They discussed the three relationships between people and content and the three dimensions of collaboration (the cornerstone of communities).

Another chapter was devoted to external stakeholders and customer relationship management (CRM). They touch on what new skills will be required to operate within online learning and knowledge sharing communities And they touch on what paths our technical future may take and how to integrate all these new technologies.

They see a "collaborative future" from within and without organizations, as globalization becomes more widespread. The day of hoarding knowledge towards power are over, long live the new king of collaboration! This book is for anyone who wants to start an online community and for those who want to reminisce about "the good ole days," for those who want to read about what the big companies are doing, and all in context. "Context" is a word near and dear to my heart-for so often we forget to put information in context, whether in conversation or training. Nancy and Cliff have completed a truly delightful read in their book. I highly recommend it!

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Building & Managing a World Class IT Help Desk.......2004-01-06

So basic it was insulting. I kept reading thinking the author would give more detail. Not sure who this book is geared towards as the technology sections are weak too.

    2 out of 5 stars Too general.......2002-03-26

I work as a Project Manager and I recently started having to incorporate Help Desk consulting/outsourcing as part of my projects. With all due respect to the excellently written review below, I found this book to be too general and filled with advice that amounted to little more than common sense. Hard metrics--what constitutes an acceptable abandonment rate or hold time at most well-run Desks?--is missing. So too are what concrete steps can be taken to improve a Help Desk that has poor metrics.

What is here are paragraphs such as "You know you want to talk them (senior management), but how do you find them? If you already are an employee of this company, odds are you have some idea who they are. If you are new to the company, you will likely have no idea." On the need to have a daily staff meeting every day (which is good advice), he writes, "You should hold this meeting either first thing in the morning or the last thing at night." (why?) "The alignment of your schedule with your managers...will tell you which one is best for you." And you should have all of the right people attending and none of the wrong people....Experience will show you if you have all the right people." I need to read this?

The book is 571 pages so he does cover a lot of ground, and if you are absolutely new to the concept of Help Desk and the Desk you will create is for a small company, this book may offer a decent general overview (see review below), but I wasn't happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for desktop support help desk operations.......2001-10-04

This is an excellent beginner's book for implementing and/or managing help desk operations that are focused on desktop support and infrastructure issue management.

Part I thoroughly explains the basics, including concepts, budgeting, and a business case for implementing a help desk. Part II covers the essentials of people, processes and tools. It also covers how to go about defining requirements and setting goals. I like the way the author steps you through the "As-Is" and "To-Be" planning because this is the foundation from which the help desk will be aligned to business and user requirements within a budget and the context of service level objectives. This part is process-oriented (as it should be) and gets you thinking in those terms.

For readers who already staff or manage a help desk Part III will be especially valuable. Here the author discusses the realities of managing your staff, retaining them in a relatively sane state and ensuring that they have training opportunities. What I like, though, is the additional processes that are introduced, including change management, service level agreements and metrics. In fact, the chapter on metrics is excellent and hits all of the key points.

Part IV is devoted to fixing existing help desk operations and is worth the price of the book if you are managing an operation that seems to forever be behind the power curve. Common causes of complaints are addressed in a methodical manner, which will provide you with the basis of a "get well" plan. If you are starting up a help desk this part of the book will show you pitfalls to avoid as your operation matures. Part V takes the people-process-tools discussed earlier into a greater amount of detail. Each topic is thoroughly covered and each provides excellent advice for increasing the effectiveness of your help desk.

The appendices are also valuable. Appendix A is a set of sample job descriptions and Appendix B is a sample service level agreement (this sample covers all of the key elements of a good SLA).

Although I found this book to be basic I also thought it is complete for desktop support and infrastructure-oriented help desks. For managed support operations where the help desk functions as an issue broker I prefer IT Problem Management by Gary S. Walker and/or Delivering World-Class Technical Support by Lori Laub et al, both of which are most applicable to enterprise application support. If you are starting a help desk or are managing one that is focused on desktop and infrastructure support this book will serve you well.

5 out of 5 stars The Six New Logic Principles and the Star Model........2001-01-26

"When we look around the business landscape, we see many giant corporations that were once very successful-General Motors, Westinghouse, IBM, Kmart, Digital, and Sears-trying to regain their glory days. At the same time, we see much younger corporations such as Compaq, Wal-Mart, Intel, and Microsoft competing with them and thriving. How did these successful giants of the 1960s and 1970s end up with major competitiveness problems in the 1980s and 1990s? The answer is both simple and extraordinarily complex. These once very successful corporations remained good at operating well-managed, bottom-line-oriented hierarchies, and as a result they continued to make small improvements in performance. Their fiercest competitors, on the other hand-often other U.S. companies-were, and still are, redefining the rules for business success and achieving dramatic improvements in their performance. Until recently, many of these formerly very successful companies have stubbornly clung to the old ways of doing things and refused to accept that a new era of management thinking what I call the 'new logic' of organizing-is beginning. As a result, the IBMs, Westinghouses, and Sears Roebucks of the world are behind in the race to reinvent themselves and the way they are managed" (from the Introduction).

In this context, Edward E. Lawler III firstly outlines and contrasts the most important assumptions and elements of both the traditional logic and the new logic appproach as following:

I- The Six Old Logic Principles:

    1. Organization is a secondary source of competitive advantage.

    2. Bureaucracy is the most effective source of control.

    3. Top management and technical experts should add most of the value.

    4. Hierarchical processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

    5. Organizations should be designed around functions.

    6. Effective managers are the key to organizational effectiveness.

II- The Six New Logic Principles:

    1. Organization can be the ultimate competitive advantage.

    2. Involvement is the most effective source of control.

    3. All employees must add significant value.

    4. Lateral processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

    5. Organizations should be designed around products and customers.

    6. Effective leadership is the key to organizational effectiveness.

Then, after introducing a new way of organizing and managing based on the new logic principles, he focuses on applying the six principles to the organizational elements in order to create a high-performance organization within the context of the Star Model-it has a pentagonal shape with a five-pointed star inside. It depicts the key features of an organization: strategy, structure, rewards, processes, and people.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for all corporate managers........2000-04-06

From The Ground Up: Six Principles For Building The New Logic Corporation offers an approach for corporate development that is designed around job functions and departments as it focuses on management rather than leadership. Author Edward Lawler presents the "new logic" in six easy-to-understand principles for organizational redesign and a hands-on plan for putting them in place. Lawler draws upon real-world examples from Motorola, Home Depot, #M, and WalMart to illustrate how these new logical principles can affect positive change in streamlining company processes, improving customer service, boosting employee morale, tackling time-to-market issues, defining business strategies, and outlining mission statements. From The Ground Up is highly recommended reading for corporate managers at all levels of responsibility in today's highly competitive and global marketplace.

    2 out of 5 stars Woefully inadequate.......2006-06-03

I'd completed the CCNA with the help of the corresponding Sybex book, (I thought it was fantastic), so hoped the BSCI book would be much the same. I was sadly disapponited. The first 5 chapters seemed to be the exact same content as the CCNA book, and the other more complex stuff was very difficult to understand. Having read the Cisco self-study I think this book lacks a lot of content, is badly written so as to make the subject unintelligible, and the examples given are so utterly trival that I don't see how they help you understand the concepts. Do not waste your money.

2 out of 5 stars Not so great.......2004-01-19

This books are full of syntax errors and answer errors. Most of the syntax example does not include a diagram, a lot of guessing game here. You got to imagine the network yourself. Most of the explanations are also not very clear.

I bought many book by Sybex, this is the only book that disappoint me.

Not a good buy. I gave it two stars for thier effort.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO PASS BSCI EXAM.......2003-12-23

This is it! This is all you need to pass the BSCI exam! This book is much more interesting than the Cisco Press books. All the information is very well presented, organized and easy to read.

The review questions were extremely useful and helped me understand the topic even better. I also went through the flash cards on my PDA the morning of the exams.

This book definitely prepared me for the BSCI exam.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need for the BSCI.......2003-12-19

This book had everything that I need to pass the BSCI exam. The layout and tables make the concepts easy to understand and learn. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get their CCNP!

5 out of 5 stars A must have book for Cisco's new 642-801 BSCI Exam.......2003-12-14

Carl has done an excellent job with the book. I used the book to successfully pass my BSCI exam.

The chapters are very well organized and have very clear examples and screen shots from actual configurations of Cisco routers.

The book starts off with a review of basic routing and IP addressing and follows with a more detailed examination of NAT and the various interior and exterior routing protocols, policy based routing and redistribution.

The command summary, written / hands on labs and review questions at the end of each chapter and the flash cards on the CDROM really helped alot for the exam.

      Book Description

The Organizational Complex is a historical and theoretical analysis of corporate architecture in the United States after the Second World War. Its title refers to the aesthetic and technological extension of the military-industrial complex, in which architecture, computers, and corporations formed a network of objects, images, and discourses that realigned social relations and transformed the postwar landscape.

In-depth case studies of architect Eero Saarinen's work for General Motors, IBM, and Bell Laboratories and analyses of office buildings designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill trace the emergence of a systems-based model of organization in architecture, in which the modular curtain wall acts as both an organizational device and a carrier of the corporate image. Such an image--of the corporation as a flexible, integrated system--is seen to correspond with a "humanization" of corporate life, as corporations decentralize both spatially and administratively.

Parallel analyses follow the assimilation of cybernetics into aesthetics in the writings of artist and visual theorist Gyorgy Kepes, as art merges with techno-science in the service of a dynamic new "pattern-seeing." Image and system thus converge in the organizational complex, while top-down power dissolves into networked, pattern-based control. Architecture, as one among many media technologies, supplies the patterns--images of organic integration designed to regulate new and unstable human-machine assemblages.

        Book Description

Issues of representation affect every aspect of scientific activity, from the encoding, display, analysis, and presentation of data to the communication of scientific concepts and information to students and the general public. The essays in this collection explore the issues involved in the creation and deployment of visual representations in both the natural and the social sciences.

Visual Cultures of Science offers a mix of theoretical analyses and revealing case studies. The latter address such topics as the technologies of visualization (from X-ray machines to films made by anthropologists), the persuasive power of the graphic presentation of data (including a critique of the work of Edward Tufte), and the distillation of data into pedagogical representations such as scientific wall charts for classroom use. With its useful mix of theory and case study, the book addresses both abstract and practical issues of representation, as well as demonstrating the importance of recognizing historicized perspectives in addressing issues of representation.

These essays, by many of the field's leading minds today, offer solid research and new information pertaining to the methods, purposes, and implications of scientific visual culture.

3 out of 5 stars Lists of all things great and small.......2002-09-18

Although I agree that the authors have produced a list of many aspects of the enterprise system life cycle, the book is no more than that, a list of all these things. It provides no guidelines in choosing among methods, no pro's and cons. The importance of all the mentioned items is given -the why it is important- but the authors provide no insight into how this could be accomplished. There is no indepth analysis of any of the subjects.

So, as an overview this book is good, but do no expect anything more than just that, an overview.

5 out of 5 stars Complete roadmap towards best practices and processes.......2001-08-28

This book provides a macro view of a comprehensive architecture and then systematically decomposes it into its component parts. The scope of architecture goes well beyond the technical underpinnings by extending to processes and tools. The first section covers an overview of "netcentric" computing and ties it to business imperatives. "Netcentric" within the context is all encompassing and fits within e-business and the older client/server paradigms. Technical components are thoroughly dissected in Section II, and are placed into the framework of processes and services. I especially liked the operations architecture discussed because it is often overlooked. Another excellent chapter in this section covers transition frameworks, which addresses some of the thorniest issues faced by CIOs and operations managers as systems evolve to fit the e-commerce and extended supply chain models that considered contemporary. Section III thoroughly covers designing and implementing solutions, and is, in my opinion, completely on the mark in all respects. The chapter on testing is the best I have ever read - even in books devoted to testing. I had always been frustrated by the ambiguous use of the term "test cycle". The description and approach provided in this book clarified the concept and provided a clear roadmap for a sensible testing process. The final section covers special topics and does so in a thought-provoking manner. Each relatively short chapter compressed a lot of relevant information on the chapter's topic. It was akin to attending focused seminars on security, knowledge management and the other topics covered. This book is a desk reference, consultant's life saver and solid description of an architecture. It can easily serve as the specification document for an IT reengineering project and is nothing short of amazing for its completeness and thoroughness.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, complete and invaluable.......2001-02-05

This book is an A to Z compendium of how to design, build, deploy and maintain enterprise-wide architectures. As such it is one of those rare books that should be in every architect's and consultant's short list of resources.

The book is divided into four sections. The first two sections lay the groundwork by providing an overview of network-centric computing solutions, then providing the foundation in the form of architectural frameworks. Section two, in particular, is valuable because the frameworks address both application delivery (development)and service delivery factors that need to be taken into account. I like this holistic approach because production support requirements are addressed early on - something that is lacking from many such books.

Section three covers the design and implementation of an architecture in great detail, with a lot of emphasis on testing, release strategy and infrastructure requirements. Section four is devoted to special topics, such as security, knowledge management and collaborative computing, and data mining. Some highlights of this section include information delivery and "componentware". What I liked most about this section was the in-depth treatment of managing costs of a production client/server environment.

This book has reinforced some of my previous ideas and experience, and has opened my eyes to factors that I had not carefully considered on past projects that involved application or service delivery. I like the coherent and comprehensive approach taken in this book for all aspects of enterprise architectures, and applaud the authors for addressing the hard part: production support of solutions. This book will travel with me to every engagement and will be the first general purpose reference to which I will turn for ideas and methods. If you are a consultant or practitioner in architecture, applications delivery or service delivery this book will be a valuable addition to your library and bag of tricks.
