Book Description
For decades indispensable, the AMA Manual of Style continues to provide editorial support to the medical and scientific publishing community. Since the 1998 publication of the 9th edition, however, the world of medical publishing has rapidly modernized, and the intersection of research and publishing has become ever more complex. The 10th edition of the AMA Manual of Style, published in early 2007, brings this definitive manual into the 21st century with a broadened international perspective. In doing so, the 10th edition has expanded its electronic guidelines, with the understanding that authors now routinely submit articles through online systems and often cite Web-only content. Ethical and legal issues receive increased attention, with detailed guidelines on authorship, conflicts of interest, scientific misconduct, intellectual property, and the protection of individuals' rights in scientific research and publication. The new edition examines research ethics and editorial independence and features new material on indexing and searching as well as medical nomenclature. JAMA and the Archives Journals, one of the most groups of medical publications in the world, have lent members of their expert staff of professional journal editors to the committee that has produced this edition. Extensively peer-reviewed, the 10th edition provides a welcome and improved standard for the growing international medical community. More than a style manual, this 10th edition offers invaluable guidance on how to navigate the dilemmas that authors and researchers and their institutions, medical editors and publishers, and members of the news media who cover scientific research confront in a society that has thrust these issues center stage.

Worth the Wait.......2007-05-09
I've been waiting for this book since becoming a medical editor 3 years ago. It is completely updated for modern-day medical communications and now includes extensive sections with Internet-related information. I use it nearly every day and absolutely love it.
At long last, the go-to guide for medical writers and editors is revised.......2007-04-17
At long last, the 10th Edition of the AMA Manual of Style is finally available, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait. As an editor who has worked in medical journals, scientific Web sites, and an agency specializing in pharmaceutical advertising, I found the 9th edition to be, at times, a bit dated and not as easy to navigate as I would have hoped. Most of those problems have been resolved in the 10th edition, as well as the inclusion of some new information that I didn't even know I was missing until I found.
The following is a list of changes in the new edition of the style guide that I found particularly helpful and relevant, and will hopefully be a quick go-to guide when you're debating whether to buy the new version or hold fast to the 9th edition.
- The section on Correct and Preferred Usage has moved from Chapter 9 to Chapter 11 and includes a wealth of information that was not in the previous edition. There is more information about the difference between race and ethnicity and when it's relevant to include sexual orientation in a scientific manuscript.
- An extended section on electronic references (3.15, 63-72). This new info is highly relevant considering since 1998 (when the 9th edition was released) there have been a number of innovations with the Internet and a number of authors choose to use the Web as sources of information.
- The section on manuscript preparation is vastly improved and expanded (Ch 4). It includes more information on the different types of tables and figures as well as new guidelines for the use of symbols and footnotes.
- Of particular interest to journal editors, there is more information on authorship requirements, conflicts of interest, sources of funding, and copyright and permissions basics (Ch 5).
- The section on capitalization demonstrates that, not only can the AMA editors laugh at themselves, but that they're also familiar with the lyrics of Coolio (eg, There is no party like a West Coast party because a West Coast party doesn't stop. 10.3, 375). The section on capitalization also includes newer terms like iBook and eBay that are more relevant to modern writing (10.8, 380).
- In terms of grammar, some of the rules that always give editors trouble are more explicitly outlined and in more detail. There's a longer section on the use of that and which (7.2, 318), which I still have to look up occasionally. A final ruling on the health care vs healthcare debate (always 2 words, per AMA, 11.1, 395). And more specific rules on false/parenthetical plurals and sentences with compound subjects (7.8)
- A change in the use of states in references. All will use postal codes now, instead of the former abbreviations (14.5, 451-455).
- An expanded section on international currency (18.5.12, 817-819).
- The section on terminology has been expanded to include information about different specialties, including psychiatry, ophthalmology, and obstetrics (Ch 15). This section also includes a new chart with human viruses that is expanded and easier to navigate (15.14.3, 762-767).
- There is a more comprehensive copyediting section, including information on editing numerical information (21.1, 907; 23.1, 929-933).
- And finally, and most importantly for all newer medical editors and writing, there is a more informative resources guide with professional organizations aimed at scientific writers and editors as well as grammar and editing resources (25, 967-976).
As a whole, I'm very pleased with the new edition of the AMA style guide, and can't wait to incorporate the new changes into my own work.
Book Description
The Concise Rules of APA Style offers essential writing and formatting standards for students, teachers, researchers, and clinicians in the social and behavioral sciences. This easy-to-use pocket guide, compiled from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, provides complete guidance on the rules of style that are critical for clear communication. Readers will learn how to avoid the grammatical errors most commonly reported by journal editors; how to choose the appropriate format for statistics, figures, and tables; how to credit sources and avoid charges of plagiarism; and how to construct a reference list through a wide variety of examples and sources.
How does the Concise Rules differ from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association? The Publication Manual remains the best source for broad background information about scientific publishing. It provides guidance on designing research, identifying the parts of a scholarly article, understanding the process of journal publication, and submitting articles for publication. The Concise Rules, by comparison, targets only those rules writers need for choosing the best words and format for their articles. It offers a comprehensive list of essential writing standards in a convenient, easily retrievable format.
In addition to guidance on grammar points that have challenged writers in the social sciences, the Concise Rules provides suggestions for reducing bias in language; reviews the mechanics of style for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, abbreviation, italicization, headings, and quotations; examines the preferred use of numbers as well as standards for metrication and statistics; provides guidance for the construction and formatting of tables, figures, and appendixes; and offers clear examples and models for referencing ideas and constructing error-free reference lists.
Available in a light-weight, spiral-bound format, the Concise Rules will travel easily from home to school to office.

Concise Rules of APA Style.......2007-10-13
This is an essential book if you're preparing papers that must follow APA style. It's official from APA, so you can count on the content. More detailed than a quick guide. The spiral binding makes it easy to use. If my 'easy way' guide doesn't have the answer, this concise guide does. Wouldn't be without it. Why didn't my uni profs tell me about this cheaper resource??? (The full-length guide costs about twice as much, if I remember correctly.)

This book is a little confusing. Never arrived when ordered first. I had to reorder this item which finally arrived two months late.
Stefplans.......2007-05-12
I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.
APA guidlines review.......2007-05-11
good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.
Great Reference.......2007-03-22
This book is a great reference for the college student that is trying to figure out the APA Referencing Rules.

Composition teachers throughout the English-speaking world have been pushing this book on their students since it was first published in 1957. Co-author White later revised it, and it remains the most compact and lucid handbook we have for matters of basic principles of composition, grammar, word usage and misusage, and writing style.
Book Description
This is the braille version of the timeless reference book. According to the St. Louis Dispatch, this "excellent book, which should go off to college with every freshman, is recognized as the best book of its kind we have." It should be the ". . . daily companion of anyone who writes for a living and, for that matter, anyone who writes at all" (Greensboro Daily New). "No book in shorter space, with fewer words, will help any writer more than this persistent little volume" (The Boston Globe). Two volumes in braille.

A very good tool.......2007-10-17
This book is an excellent tool for those who want to learn in a practical way the essentials of writing. Whether you write for science, art, or any other area of investigation; this book will help you giving tips and showing with detailed examples the most common situations while you write. I recommend the book to those who want writing as a way of expressing their ideas and to those who are not conformists and like to go further in life.
This book is: Easy to read, practical, and helpful.

The book was in wonderful condition. It arrived in a timely manner. I would buy from you again.
Great guide for writers of all ages.......2007-09-25
My son's teacher recommended this book when he was in middle school. He still refers to it in college as he pursues his writing career. My daughter needed her own copy for school because her brother wouldn't give his up! You really can't go wrong with this book.
Good book........2007-09-07
It is good book, but you might find some styles are repeating with other books. It is good to learn from this author, but I also suggest learn more from other authors, too.
Read it, Then Read It Again.......2007-09-06
This itsy bitsy tome is an ageless classic. I read it for the first time 20 years ago. Despite having never found grammar interesting before, I became hooked on the sharp little lessons. I read it again, to both delight and edification. And I'll read it once more, to remind myself of the rules that make English what it is and to smile at Prof. Strunk, long gone but very much alive in these pugnacious 80 pages. He's somehow managed to boil down the bones of the language and give you the absolute essentials. If you haven't read it, you're in for a treat and a pleasant surprise, especially if you don't care for grammar. This is truly short and sweet.

Definately Needs Improvement.......2007-10-25
A lot of more qualified voices have voiced their opinions on the APA manual so I won't try to cover everything. I do teach a class that covers experimental approaches, however, and this class is basically bathed in the light of the APA manual. Because of that I have found some really serious flaws in the manual's presentation and want to cover the most glaring problem I have seen in he APA manual to date because it bothered me even as a student.
The example paper - what a bad joke.
Instead of giving you a paper done in correct APA format, the example provided in the book is one that is marked and remarked with all types of errors. It is a basic attempt to show you what is what in the word of errors and, to a point, it helps. The problem with it is that there isn't a paper that shows how to do a correct paper in APA. This can create all kinds of quandaries because it doesn't help you when you are trying to make sure you did everything correctly. Sure, you can flip through the manual and make sure everything is right and this wonderfully time-consuming method does work ONCE YOU'VE MASTERED the manual. When you've just begun - that's a different matter.
Because of that, I would suggest getting a book with something that shows how to do things correctly just in case. Otherwise, you could accidentally make a mistake because you looked at the manual that is supposed to be your pilot. I would also suggest a guide if you are new for other reasons, namely the little things that escape lectures. Comma rules that aren't really the best type of rules, the number counts allowed in specific areas like an abstract, the way a Running head has to be presented, and the drove of rules concerning tables and graphs that people normally miss.
It never hurts to be over-prepared, and especially so when the guidebook reads like a technical manual written in its own tongue.
APA Manual.......2007-10-24
I purchased this book because it is a requirement for my program at school. I purchased the spiral bound copy because I'll be using it often and wanted something that I can keep open on the page that I'm using. I'm glad that I did. Amazon delivered as promised in time for my first class, however the first copy I received had many of its pages out of order, and I had to wait for a replacement copy. Now for the text itself, I find it inadequate, and I am glad that my college provided a class to supplement the text. It is not at all complete in its explanations and I made profuse notes in the margins with information gleaned from the class. Since the APA style writing is so much a part of my program, this book is very necessary yet challenging to me and I am finding it not to be very user friendly. Hopefully it will seem better as I become more proficient in the APA style of writing. But for now I have little option but to get used to it since this is the manual of the APA. They could have done a better job in putting it together.
Badly Organized Manual.......2007-10-23
This book jumps all over the place and is very confusing. For example, detailed instructions for how to include various forms of electronic media in the reference section should be RIGHT NEXT TO how they are cited within the text. But instead the instructions for citing within the text are in some completely different universe within the book. This is not so much a manual as a melting pot of random information. Occasionally it appears to be working well, delivering information logically, and then suddenly the next obvious step is missing. Very, very strange for a field that studies what drives people crazy.
APA Publication Manual.......2007-10-17
This book has a lot of info included in it. Sometimes takes a bit to find what you are looking for, but when you do it is all spelled out for you. A must have if you are writing in APA format.
Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition.......2007-10-05
This book is o.k. but has way too much information for the average college student who just wants the bare basic facts to get through a writing assignment. It took longer to find the information I needed than it did to write the paper.
I am glad that I chose the spiral format in that it is extremely easy to work with as opposed to the traditional bounded style book.
For someone who plans on writing a lot of papers this book is a must.

The world is divided into two types of people: those who wince when they see the words Canadian geese in print, and those who don't. If you are the former, or if you are the latter working for the former, the The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual provides invaluable assistance when you need to get your Canada geese all in a row. Countless newspapers and other publications base their style guides on this manual. The entries are arranged alphabetically and include issues of spelling, punctuation (there is no period in Dr Pepper), grammar, abbreviation, capitalization (Popsicle and Dumpster are, tollhouse cookies aren't), hyphenation (none, surprisingly, in ball point pen), and frequently misused words. There are also longer discussions of things such as Arabic names, chess notation, weather terms, and religious movements. Plus you'll find separate sections on sports writing, business writing, libel, and copyright.

Wouldn't write without it.......2007-07-28
Also know as the AP style guide, this book should be every copywriter's and journalist's bookshelf. This is the definitive guide to punctuation, grammar and writing style for magazine and newspaper articles as well as most business writing. And it is vastly different from the style of writing most of us learned in school, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are thinking about writing for magazines or newspapers, or starting a copywriting business, you absolutely must get a copy of this.
Good Introduction to AP Style.......2007-07-07
I bought this book because I had a client that used the AP Style in their marketing communication and all outgoing documentation had to be reviewed using the AP Style. Being a technical writer, I had not used the AP Style before. Now I have a better understanding of why words are used the way they are in a newspaper. However, about 20% of the AP Style does not apply to technical writing.
AP Stylebook.......2007-05-29
A must have for all print designers. Great reference material for graphic and web designers.
Wanna be a reporter? Duh........2007-02-25
If you aspire to have any sort of career in print or online journalism, you should not need a review to tell you that you need this book. Duh.
However, I am going to give this book only four stars because AP needs to stop being losers and end the silliness of capitalizing the word "Internet" or writing "website" as "Web site." It's dumb.
Great Resource.......2007-01-16
This is a great book for anyone, from an aspiring writer to the accomplished journalist. The information within is very valuable and very well organized.
Book Description
The informal, student-friendly tone of this rhetorically-organized rhetoric/reader/handbooks provides step-by-step instructions on writing a variety of short, 500-800-word essays. This is a text that both students and instructors can use easily.

At the beginning of The Writer's Journey, Christopher Vogler asserts that "all stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies." Some may be hard-pressed to accept this idea (and will wonder how storytellers from Homer to Shakespeare to Robert Altman might respond to the proposition). Others may imagine that since Vogler uses movies like the Star Wars trilogy and The Lion King to defend his mythological philosophy, he is, unwittingly, listing the reasons why Hollywood films of the last 20 years have been so unimaginative. But there's no doubt that Vogler's notion, based on psychological writings by Carl Jung and the mythmaking philosophy of Joseph Campbell, has been profoundly influential. Many screenwriters have used Vogler's volume to understand why certain scenarios sell, and to discover a blueprint for creating mythic stories of their own.
Now in its second edition, The Writer's Journey sets forth archetypes common in what Vogler calls "the hero's journey," the mythic structure that he claims all stories follow. In the book's first section, he lists the different kinds of typological characters who appear in stories. In the second, he discusses the stages of the journey through which the hero generally passes. The final, supplementary portion of the book explains in detail how films like Titanic and The Full Monty follow the patterns he has outlined. --Raphael Shargel
Book Description
Provides new insights and observations from Vogler's pioneering work in mythic structure for writers.

An essential guide for understanding mythic storytelling.......2007-10-22
One of the classic books for writers, Vogler's must-read guide is now available in an updated third edition. "The Writers Journey" has long been prized by screenwriters in particular for its easy-to-understand breakdown of the mythic structure of storytelling, best known from Joseph Campbell's amazing book, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." It also details how a number of well-known films follow that pattern of storytelling.
There is a formulaic nature of "The Writers Journey" that might be unappealing to those who are looking for a more in-depth, philosophical read. (The books essentially takes complex ideas and presents them in a simplistic fashion.) But for those who want to understand more about the subject matter in an easy-to-read format, Vogler's book is an excellent place to start.
This guide is of use to anyone who wants to learn more about the ages-old structure of storytelling, with practical examples that they can apply to their own writing.
Insightful, engaging.......2007-10-17
Based on the premise that "All stories consist of a few common structural elements found universally in myths, fairy tales, dreams, and movies," the third edition of this ever evolving, useful work builds on concepts drawn from the writings of Carl G. Jung and the mythic studies of Joseph Campbell. Showing great passion and insight, Vogler digs deep into the very infrastructure of storytelling, revealing, as he states in his preface, a "beautiful design, a set of principles that govern the conduct of life and the world of storytelling the way physics and chemistry govern the physical world." More of an "A ha!" than a "how to" book, The Writer's Journey should provide anyone with any interest at all in reading or telling tales with many hours of pleasurable and informative reading. Recommended.
An incredible resource.......2007-10-17
I tend to focus more on writing nonfiction than fiction, but like so many people, I have a novel in my head waiting to come out. I'm also a huge fan of Jungian psychology and Joseph Campbell's work on mythology. So being able to find a storytelling guide that incorporates these qualities was a wonderful opportunity to fine-tune some of my thoughts.
I can see why this is in its third edition--this is a wonderfully complete guide to archetypes and motifs, and creating the mythology of a story. Rather than being prescriptive and listing requirements of what the writer *should* include in hir story, instead the author offers explanations of some of the archetypal roles and motifs and ideas of how they may be incorporated. The theory is illustrated by examples from well-known movies, such as "The Wizard of Oz" and "North by Northwest", among many others, taking these concepts and making them even more familiar.
The writing is easy to follow, too--rather than being a dry textbook, it's an inviting exploration of mythology in modern times. It's also quite functional, and I found myself brainstorming periodically as I was inspired by something I read.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to write a good, well-rounded story.
The essential writer's guide, bar none.......2007-10-16
Following common threads in everything from mythology to a slew of science fiction and fantasy, if there isn't a germ of an idea in your head after reading how to structure great tales, you're just not trying.
You can put a shine to your written work with WRITERS JOURNEY; I know that it is my secret weapon for all future projects and pitches. As nice a reminder of HOW to build mythos and it is a guide for those that have worked.
Probably a textbook in use somewhere and hopefully getting the applause that it mind-blowingly deserves.
Although written with film in mind, a comic book creator's perfect reference to making it cinematically perfect.
Just outstanding!
Change the Way You Read , Watch, and Listen.......2007-10-16
This book is amazing! Loving to read and loving to write have always been a part of who I am. But reading this book, The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler totally revolutionized the way I see a story. When you read enough literature you begin to presuppose certain themes and plot twists. As a colleague of mine says, "You begin to read like a writer..."
If you want to read like a writer this book is for you. Christopher Vogler takes the track that all stories fall into the realm of myth. We tell story in order to make sense of life and to move ourselves through life in a sensible and reflective way. Vogler tells us that all stories take on cerain mythic structures. And when authors use these mythic structure effectively it creates a story that really resonates within us.
Vogler's work relies heavily on the research and theory of Joseph Campbell a mythologist whom he met at USC. Campbell's work with myths and archetypes in myths totally reshaped Vogler view of stories. Throughout the course of this book Vogler takes us step by step through the structures and devices that make stories truly great. We meet basic archetypes or characters such as: Heroes, Mentors, Heralds, Shadows, and Tricksters.
We also encounter many facets and turning points found in every good story such as: Ordinary World, Call to Adventure, Meeting the Mentor, Approaching the Inmost Cave and many others.
Reading this book will cause you to view movies, read books, and hear any story in a whole new way. I read this book wanting some direction as a writer. But found it changed my whole mindset when it comes to literature. I now, never read a book or watch a movie without looking for these mythic structures.
The most powerful impact this book had on me was as a teacher. This book was written for college and graduate students. But I found I could incorporate elements of it into my work with second graders. The ideas in this book ring true for all readers... no matter how young or old. My students loved to discuss fairy tales and learn about how the mythic structures in ,The Writer's Journey fit into them. They relished the opportunity to apply these ideas to their own writing.
This book is well researched, easy to read, and exciting to encounter. I highly recommend it to any one who loves a good story!

Hodges' Harbrace Handbook.......2002-08-11
I've been using this handbook for about 25 years, and recently realized that my edition was the 3rd, published in the 1970s! So I ordered the latest edition (14th edition), and was so pleased with my purchase. This is a handbook that lives in our office, and gets used to death (we do graphic design, copywriting, editing). Any new employee on our staff is required to at least become familiar with the table of contents (in case of emergency!), and very soon they too are heading for Harbrace's to look up something. We love it.

It never ceases to amaze me how many times some ... grammarian tries to correct my writing only to review my Harbrace College Handbook to see they're wrong and I'm right. This is the definitive guide to American English grammar. Easy to read, plenty of examples, and more importantly it even covers those gray areas of usage letting the ready know this non-standard without simply cutting you off without explanation. I have purchased the latest edition ever since I purchased my first copy as text to Advanced Composition during my undergraduate days at the University of Maryland University College. Harbrace as served me very well ever since helping me obtain a high GPA in regards to my written assignments. I have a lot of other grammar books that I look at now and then, but Harbrace remains the standard.
