Money maven Suze Orman's latest book, Women & Money addresses the complicated (and often dysfunctional) relationship women have with personal finance. Orman's direct, non-condescending style is perfect for this subject matter--she begins with the premise that "Women can invest, save, and handle debt as well and skillfully as any man" and then tackles the important question--"So why don't they?" Designed to educate and inspire, Women & Money also offers a "Save Yourself Plan," a five-month program that "delivers genuine long-term financial security." Want to know more? Read the First Chapter of Women & Money
For Women Only
I never thought I'd write a book about money just for women. I never thought it was necessary. So then why am I doing just that in my eighth book? And why now? Let me explain. All my previous books were written with the belief that gender is not a factor on any level in mastering the nuts and bolts of smart financial management. Women can invest, save, and handle debt just as well and skillfully as any man. I still believe that--why would anyone think differently? So imagine my surprise when I learned that some of the people closest to me in my life were in the dark about their own finances. Clueless. Or, in some cases, willfully resisting doing what they knew needed to be done. I'm talking about smart, competent, accomplished women who present a face to the world that is pure confidence and capability. Do you mean to tell me that I, Suze Orman, who make my living solving the financial problems of total strangers, couldn't spot the trouble brewing so close to home? I don't think I'm blind; I just think that these women became very, very good at hiding their troubles from me.Why not? They had years of practice hiding them from themselves.

Book Description
Why is it that women, who are so competent in all other areas of their lives, cannot find the same competence when it comes to matters of money?
Suze Orman investigates the complicated, dysfunctional relationship women have with money in this groundbreaking new book. With her signature mix of insight, compassion, and soul-deep recognition, she equips women with the financial knowledge and emotional awareness to overcome the blocks that have kept them from making more out of the money they make. At the center of the book is The Save Yourself Plan—a streamlined, five-month program that delivers genuine long-term financial security. But what’s at stake is far bigger than money itself:
It’s about every woman’s sense of who she is and what she deserves, and why it all begins with the decision to save yourself.

Great gift!.......2007-10-01
Bought this for a good friend who was widowed a year ago and had not been involved in finances during the marriage. She is digging herself out of some financial challenges and she said the book made her feel really good about her progress. Highly recommend!!
Suze is Five Stars.............2007-09-21
I've listened to Suze Orman on TV and I bought this book for my wife who doesn't want to manage her portfolio. She still won't manage her portfolio, but she's getting smarter about investments.
Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money.......2007-09-20
Suze Orman Shares Investing Common Sense with Her Book Women & Money ~ Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny
By Lisa Manyon [...]
Money is a topic you either embrace or avoid. Orman's book delivers straight talk on investing for women and building individual wealth.
Personally I've always know just enough about investing to put some money away each month and I rely on financial advisors to steer me in the right direction.
Suze shares a candid look at her life and how she got to where she is now. Plus she offers a no nonsense approach to making sure women begin to really think about taking care of their own business.
With an uplifting vein of optimism about what is possible throughout the book, Orman successfully illustrates traits and tactics to help women thoughtfully approach investing.
Orman's 8 qualities of wealthy women have been shared on national talk shows and cannot be stressed enough.
Qualities 1 and 2 are harmony and balance. These are said to be the most important qualities because they are the foundation for all other qualities.
Quality 3 is courage. Orman writes that "Courage gives harmony expression. When your thoughts and feelings are one, courage helps you manifest them in the form of words and actions."
Quality 4 is generosity. Orman points out that woman tap into this almost too quickly. We tend to be overly generous with our time, support, love and money. The true measure of generosity, according to Orman, is being able to allow money to come into your hands and out through your heart.
This was a concept I can relate to. Orman challenges women to look at why and what they give and how it makes them feel. She also offers six rules for giving (but, you'll have to grab a copy of the book to find out what these are).
Quality number 5 is happiness. According to Orman when you find the courage to live your life in harmony and balance, you understand and practice generosity, happiness will spontaneously appear.
And perhaps the most important point she shares about happiness is this; "Happiness is not a luxury. It is a necessity for true wealth."
Quality number 6 comes in the form of wisdom. Who doesn't want to be wiser?
According to Orman, wisdom is more than intellectual and not directly related to education. Wisdom is an express result of tapping into your core beliefs to make the right decisions for yourself.
The 7th quality is cleanliness and is all about the importance of order and organization. A laundry list of situations that subtract from your wealth status include;
- Not knowing where your money is
- Not having a systematized filing system for important documents
- Pulling crumpled bills and receipts out of your purse
- Maintaining a vehicle that looks like a garbage can
- Having closets that are filled with junk and clutter.
I am sure most of us can relate to at least one area we need to work on. I have to admit, as organized as I am, I could relate to a couple of those scenarios. Orman's philosophy really makes sense and I've corrected my personal problem areas. My first order of business was donating clothing I had not used or worn in the past year to charity.
The final quality is beauty. Orman ties all the qualities together by noting beauty is what you achieve when all the qualities are combined.
To some it may seem strange that the qualities of wealthy women are included in a book on investing. However, if you personally don't possess the qualities it will not be as easy for you to achieve your wealth potential.
In addition to the foundational building blocks Orman shares solid advice on choosing the right investor, the importance of having one personal savings account in your name only and discusses investment options in layman's terms so anyone can get started right way.

Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.
Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. --Barbara Mackoff

Impressions Do Count!.......2007-10-24
Blink and intuition go hand-in-hand. First impressions do count, and rarely are they off base. It's a fast read; just re-reading it reminded me that basics are always basic and that if I would pay attention to gut reactions and first impressions, I rarely go wrong.

Just short of 4 stars...........2007-10-22
I bought this on the back of reading Malcoms really interesting "The Tipping Point" book.
Blink is worth a read, however you are left with the feeling that its all a little padded out to compensate for what really could be a much shorter book. There are some good insights into the way people unconsciously make decisions about things.
Some of the more interesting studies quoted explain how a high percentage of corporate leaders are taller than the average person. And how every extra inch in height can equate to about an extra $1,000 in salary. The goal of this book is to try to explain why these kind of things happen. It seems we all subconsciously make decisions based on predefined perceptions.
Some ideas it this book really overlap with NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). If you have read anything about NLP then I think you will see the overlap.
People really should rely a lot more on their gut feelings with things as this book proves. Even though you may not know why you have a gut feeling about something this gut feeling comes from your subconscious evaluating and making decisions. The most powerful thing you can do, I believe, is try to be a bit more aware of your first gut feeling about things, it is easy to not pick up on them.
Powerful, Interesting Read.......2007-10-17
Great read that explains in detail a phenomenon that most of us encounter on a daily basis - thin slicing - making split decisions based on limited or no analysis. The book has numerous practical applications and should be read by anyone in a decision making role - executives, marketers, traders, etc. Definitely liked Blink more than Tipping Point. Looking forward to Gladwell's next book.
Unabashed Fan for Good Reason.......2007-10-16
I am a huge fan of Gladwell's work. Both Blink and Tipping Point are fantastically entertaining yet highly informative - a combination that, as a writer, I aspire to and one Gladwell has clearly mastered.
Blink.......2007-10-14
Still reading the book but find it very interesting and informative. Explains many thoughts, behavors that I've had in the past.
Book Description
Whether they are corporate professionals, budding entrepreneurs, or they own a home business, most people are looking to achieve more in less time, while earning enough money to live comfortably. This book reveals the proven techniques thousands of people have used to attain all of the money they wanted while living healthy, happy and balanced lives. The Power of Focus, the new blockbuster from the coauthors of the bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul, is a practical no-nonsense guide that shows readers how to reach their business, personal and financial goals without getting burned out in the process. Canfield, Hansen, and Hewitt have taken the best ideas from their own successful careers (seventy-nine years of combined business expertise), and distilled them into ten powerful focusing principles. The result is a treasury of insights that is enjoyable to read and easy to understand. At the outset, the book identifies the three most important fundamentals for consistent success: developing unusual clarity; understanding that habits determine your future; and using a "no exceptions policy" approach to focus on what you want. Numerous anecdotes and inspiring stories help to reinforce each principle. This is a must-read for business people, sales managers, entrepreneurs, and anyone who is serious about improving their personal awareness.

Focus.......2007-10-21
Good book, it fills some gaps for me, setting goals for example I never knew the detail that was required. At $11.oo worth it!
Excellent read - with great explanations..........2007-10-13
If you are new to life planning, dont miss this book. I had done over 80% of the things indicated in the book, yet I found the book very enjoyable.
The thing I liked most was that the book lets you interact with it. There is plenty of space for you to do the exercises and write down your answers. Dont worry about right or wrong.
If you are serious about making the book work for you, you must follow the instructions. After reading the book, skim through it again; if your handwriting does not show on at least 30% of the pages, you have not done what you were supposed to do. In that case you will derive only a fraction of the true benefits it has to offer.
Learn, enjoy, and succeed - who knows what you will be in the next

Wow! This is great for us creative A.D.D types who are entrepreneurs .......2007-10-01
Amazing! I felt like that book was written just for me.
On page 14 they explain how to identify bad habits by listing 26 habits that hold you back. I had 24 of the 26 bad habits!
Now that I'm able to focus effectively, LIFE IS GREAT!
The Power of Focus.......2007-08-23
I have not completed the book yet but what I have read so far has been excellent and I have put into practice the ideas presented. I especially like the interactive study questions in each chapter. I would highly recommend this book for everyone who has their own business or is thinking about starting their own business
Great book for entrepreneurs.......2007-08-09
The creators of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series, Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, have teamed up with top performance coach Les Hewitt to create The Power of Focus, a step-by-step guide to making your dreams become reality and creating the life you want.
In order to get the most out of the information in this book, one must first realize this: "Success takes effort and consistent, focused activity." (quoted directly from the book)
In a nutshell, that's essentially what the book is all about, and it is only worth reading if one understands and agrees with that statement and is willing to put it into action. The "Power of Focus" is not something to just read and then think about; it is a set of instructions for doing the things necessary to achieve your goals
Each chapter describes specific strategies and techniques, and includes motivating stories about real people who have implemented and succeeded with those techniques. At the end of the chapter is a set of Action Steps, which condenses the strategies into an easy-to-follow instructional format. In addition to a well laid action plan for success, the book also provides loads of suggestions for additional reading to help keep one motivated and continuously learning. All in all, "The Power of Focus" is easy to read and understand, and is quite motivational as well.
While the book seems to be geared toward self-starters, business owners, entrepreneurs and the like, there is something of value in it for everyone. Most, if not all, of the techniques described in this book could be used with respect to any goal, be it business, financial, or personal. For someone who is stuck in any aspect of life and not sure how to effect change, reading and implementing the techniques defined in "The Power of Focus" could definitely help.

Pragmatic, useful ideas to improve the quality of your life.......2007-10-11
I loved this book because it offers very simple, very practical ideas that busy, busy people can use to improve the quality of their lives without having to make significant behavioral changes or significant time commitments. This type of counsel is hard to come by and very valuable. The book itself is a quick, easy read -- perfect airplane reading.
Manage Energy - great insight........2007-08-23
We need to manage our energy to perform the most important things. We often take our energy for granted and are not aware of our ebbs and flows.
We need to do the most important things when we have the most energy. We need to eat and sleep to have more energy. It originally comes from a sports performance model, but has been adapted for executives. It is also important as we grow older. Truely a new insight for me that unified a few things I ahve been learning.
Push Past Your Limit To Grow.......2007-06-04
I felt this book's main premise was a useful idea, but nothing novel. Expanding past one's limit, followed by a rest period resulting in growth whether physical or psychological. I liked the informational nature of the book, however, I didn't care much for the examples of actual people written about in it. I understand it is used to help prove the points, but it appeared to be fluff to me and I would have liked more information to drill the point home and more sources to back up the info.
Those opinions aside, it is worthwhile, to the point and contains enough information to satisfy reading it once, but I don't expect to re-read it.
Not a silly self-help book.......2007-05-17
At first look, the subtitle "Managing Energy, Not Time" smells of another 'just do this and your life will be great' self-help book. However, this book avoids most of the simplistic approaches other books take. Outlined is excellent, yet straightforward guidance on how to bring into balance a work life that is out of control or at least a bit out of whack. The simple advice given (which regretfully requires some basic self discipline - I prefer to avoid self discipline) is both helpful and if followed, effective. The book is relatively careful not to imply that applying its principles or introducing self discipline is easy. It is, however, unapologetic when suggesting that making a set of changes in how one manages one's life will make a difference. The book also lays out a very helpful distinction between one's energy and one's time - and it is a very helpful distinction - describing a truth that I had not before carefully considered. The book includes numerous case studies of actual people with which the authors have worked. I think you will be able to identify with a number of these case studies. If you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, and/or lack balance in how your work life, home life, and downtime function, take a look at this book.
Disappointing.......2007-03-21
Nothing new here. Eat right, get plenty of sleep and drink your water and you too can have more energy. I have to agree with other reviewers that state that this book is poorly written. Instead of providing a method for creating your own energy plan, the authors give simple hazy case examples.

Taking Charge Of My Life.......2007-10-03
For years I'd worked in an environment where complaint was the norm, a way to pass the time, to even connect with colleagues. A teachers meeting would start with griping about our principal and move on to how the parents weren't involved enough or were involved too much. Both complaints were equally possible in the same meeting! It's funny how a shift in perspective could transform a shift in my reality. All I needed to do was "Flip the Switch" and take a look at my actions, pose different types of questions and suddenly my working life was filled with ease and enthusiasm. Instead of asking the question: "Why aren't the parents involved more?" I now ask "How can I communicate better to bring in more parent involvement?" Shifting the responsibility onto me has made all the difference.
John Miller fills each page with enthusiasm and a belief that personal accountability is the key to success. He believes in posing questions that don't blame but resolve; questions that focus on action and the moment....because the moment is all we have.
"Flipping The Switch" was the glorious icing to a rich cake I discovered a while ago when I read the books "How To Create A Magical Relationship" and "Being Here, Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment" by Ariel & Shya Kane. They taught me that I could either complain about the events happening in my life OR I could embrace them. I've chosen the latter for a while now and shared with others how this simple phenomenon is possible for each of us. It's great that I'll be able to share this new book too. I highly recommend all of them!
Great for Harnessing Your Own Strength.......2007-08-16
"Flipping the Switch" is a small but muscular tool. It helped me to get out of a cycle of complaining, pushing me to ask "What Can I do about this situation?" rather than "Why is this situation so annoying?" As a teacher, I have found I can sometimes dwell too much on the faults of the school system, or my colleagues, blaming them for the way things are, rather than truly trying to make a situation better myself. When I catch myself doing that now, I remember the QBQ, or the question behind the question: rather than saying "Why is the bureocracy preventing me from getting things done?" I ask, "What can I accomplish right here, right now?"
I have also been reading Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment both by Ariel and Shya Kane, and find them to be a wonderful companion to "Flipping the Switch." Their principles of transformation and everyday examples of how one can live with excellence (rather than being dominated by a situation you resist) are brilliant. Both are inspirational reference tools to be pulled out whenever you need it. I highly recommend these books along with "Flipping the Switch."
Flipping the Switch - Nice Refresher on the QBQ.......2007-07-30
John Miller has written another easy to read reference that outlines the simplicity of his topic, personal accountability. Too often everyone gets hung up the blame game or being a victim; John asks his readers to consider the way positive thinking can affect how you attack a challenge or mindset.
The author keeps his lessons easy to read and short, you can read it in 1-2 sittings, and continues to emphasize the same concepts. This is not the depths of the 7 habits or How To Win Friends, but is a very easy read which makes it ideal for a quick lesson. Breaking out of a slump can be hard to do and Mr. Miller provides that lifeline, including writing it simply when procrastination is one of his concepts to overcome!
Wonderful!.......2007-03-26
This book is worth your time and then share it with everyone at work! I am ordering another copy for my manager. This book is an eye opener.
Quick read, life changing, and needed by all!!!.......2006-12-25
This little book on personal accountability is worth a lot MORE than the retail price. Anyone struggling with blame, finger-pointing, and a desire to COMPLAIN needs Flipping the Switch And the author's original book, QBQ! As a sales exec for a large pharmaceutical firm, we have brought these books into our organization, formed book discussion clubs, and have begin to see a true level of change in our culture. From one of recrimination to creativity, trust, service and ACCOUNTABILITY. We have big goals to hit in 2007 without personal responsibility by all, they'll never be achieved. The stories in these books are terrific, the reading is quick, and Mr. Miller's insight into human nature is amazing.

The world you live in is all in your mind, according to Wharton Business School Professors Yoram Wind and Colin Crook. The Power of Impossible Thinking is a witty and lucid translation of neuroscience research about "mental models"--the deeply ingrained assumptions and images that shape our reality and influence opportunities for success and failure. "Our models are gated communities," say Crook and Wind, who offer a superb crash course on the power and limit of mental models.
The key questions: How do you know when an old model is worn out? How do you avoid "cognitive lock," filtering out information that conflicts with your model? How do you know a new model will live up to its hype? Many of the answers lie in "Mind R&D"--developing an inventory of new and old models and refining your intuition to fit your current reality. These engaging ideas are detailed with portraits of three impossible thinkers (Oprah Winfrey, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and Intel's Andy Grove) and vivid examples (The music industry vs. Napster, a French fry cancer scare, O-rings on the Challenger). Wind and Crook make such a brilliant case for new ways of seeing that readers may wish for more coaching to recognize the obsolete models that keep us from changing our minds. --Barbara Mackoff

"We like to say, 'See it with your mind's eye.' Wind and Crook show us that our mind is our eye. What we think is what we see, and what we see directs how we act. Not only do the authors make this paradigm clear, but they offer concrete and practical ways to change our mind's eye and as a consequence change our actions and the results we get. The value of that is hard to top."
J. Stewart Black, Ph.D. co-author of Leading Strategic Change and Professor, University of Michigan Business School
"I have been trying to explain why Japan has fallen into a pitfall and cannot come out of even the simplest problems. One can call it an innovators dilemma, but that does not solve the problem. This book suggests we have to go back to the basics of reviewing our underlying 'mental models' now and then, and only then, have to construct a new model, perhaps plural, and move onto exploring the new terrain."
Kenichi Ohmae Author of the international bestseller, The Borderless World
"While most of us may recognize that the world we respond to is more in our mind than in any physical reality, often we don't have a clue why this is so. This very important book clearly explains how our mental models work to construct these distinct inner worlds. And more importantly it offers empowering advice on how we can use this knowledge to work for us rather than against us in creating a better outer world for ourselves, our organizations, and our societies."
Charles C. Manz Best-selling author of SuperLeadership, Fit to Lead, and Temporary Sanity
"This is an important book that 'makes sense of how we make sense.' The authors provide a thorough, fresh, and compelling exploration into the dimensions of mental models. All leaders who want to be more effective in their actions would be served well to leverage the principles in this book to learn about how they think and make sense of the world around them."
Nick Pudar Director of Strategic Initiatives, General Motors
Customer Reviews:
The only paradigm for problem solving is logic.......2007-06-09
This is an interesting book and might be implemented more effectively by readers who have also read "The logic of Failure," by Dietrich Doerner, which itself was a business bestseller in the 1990s.
Doerner's main thesis is that there are patterns of thought that make failure inevitable, and he runs through a number of entertaining case studies documenting how faulty problem-solving paradigms have resulted in disaster. Doerner also notes that cures for the inability to handle complex situations typically rely on facile theories about the human brain, and that the probability that there is a secret mental trick that at one stroke will enable the human mind to solve complex problems is practically zero.
The psychological determinants of failure go far deeper than faulty mental models or paradigms, and they develop gradually according to a predictable logic. A reader concerned about evaluating the effectiveness of mental models or paradigms will gain much from reading "The Logic of Failure."
A toolkit for shifting your paradigm.......2006-05-28
This book is a great combination of theoritical thinking as well as practical business problems. It examines the discussion on paradigms - which the authors prefer to call 'mental models' and how they constrain your perception of reality. So far, so good. Then they start outlining a practical methodology for changing your mental model, which should enable you to 'think impossible thoughts' meaning in this context, thinking thoughts that were impossible in your previous paradigm. I like the depth of research behind the concept and the academic structure given to the book on a subject that has been much discussed, but manages to give it a new perspective and some practical tools to take away with you.
I spoke with the author and have published extracts of the interview on the HyperThinker Experiment site, so please check it out if you want to hear more from the author himself: http://www.hyperthinker.com/Currentinterviews/tabid/693/Default.aspx.
A worthwhile read and a fascinating look at an issue that affects us all.
The power of viewing and molding your reality..........2006-04-16
It's often the case that our vision of reality is a product of our own mental biases. If you can change the way you look at something, the reality of it can undergo a dramatic shift. This whole subject is explored very well in the book The Power of Impossible Thinking: Transform the Business of Your Life and the Life of Your Business by Jerry Wind, Colin Crook, and Robert Gunther. Very powerful stuff...
Contents:
Part 1 - Recognize The Power And Limits Of Mental Models: Our Models Define Our World; Running The Miracle Mile
Part 2 - Keeping Your Models Relevant: Should You Change Horses?; Paradigm Shifts Are A Two-Way Street; Seeing A New Way Of Seeing; Sift For Sense From Streams Of Complexity; Engage In R&D Of The Mind
Part 3 - Transform Your World: Dismantle The Old Order; Find Common Ground To Bridge Adaptive Disconnects
Part 4 - Act Quickly And Effectively: Develop The Intuition To Act Quickly; The Power To Do The Impossible; Challenging Your Own Thinking - Personal, Business, and Society; What You Think Is What You Do; The Neuroscience Behind Mental Models; Selected Bibliography; Acknowledgments; Index; On The Audio CD
This is one of those rare "business books" that can be applied effectively to both your business and your personal life. The authors examine how our mindsets of situations and events cause us to build our own "reality" about them. The opening example is about how you're walking along a dark street and you hear footsteps behind you. You know the neighborhood recently had a well-publizied crime happen. You're sure that you're about to be the next victim. Fight or Flight... Then you turn and find it's one of your co-workers. The reality of the situation never altered, but "your" reality of the situation has completely changed. These "mental models" are then explored in various realms of business and personal life. For instance, Howard Schultz viewed Starbucks through a completely different mental filter than those who were running the operation. Rather than seeing the company as a seller of coffee, he saw the potential for a complete experience surrounding the act of ordering and drinking coffee. He had to leave the company, start his own operation around that model, and then buy out Starbucks once his vision showed signs of success. The same business environment was open to both Schultz and the owners, but they saw the "reality" in completely different ways...
This is one of the better books I've read that deals with the subject of neuroscience. But rather than just giving examples and citing research, the authors show how this research can be applied to your life in ways that can make a dramatic difference. If you've never explored the "science of the mind", this is a great introduction anchored in practical use. And this might just be the spark that causes you to change the way you look at things, thereby changing your life in ways that seem completely impossible right now...
We Should Invest In Our Mind's R & D.......2006-04-13
"The Power of Impossible Thinking" is labelled as a "business book" and it's very hopeful for those in business, both big and small. But it has tremendous value to everyone, in every aspect of our lives. Our "mental models" determine where we'll go and what we'll do and accomplish, throughout our lives. And, our mental models can limit us in our lives as well. One of the focuses is on the thought process, as it should be. Our thought process is often what hinders us. This book reminded me many times of the perils of stagnation. Mental and attitudinal stagnation. This leads to the oft-times subtle downward spiral of complacency, and just plain getting too comfortable.
The "Power of Impossible Thinking" provides practical and do-able models for the contemporary times we live in. This book is divided into 4 sections: a) The importance of mental models and how they help and hurt us b) how to keep models current and know when to alter or change them, and continuously experiment c) obstacles and ways to over come them, and d) develop intuition and act, concluded by "What You Think Is What You Do."
Two chapters specifically help readers sharpen our mental models and use our perceptions to help us in our lives. What we perceive we can do, and what we actually do, depends on our attitude and perceptions: we bring our own baggage with us. Critical, is recognizing things that keep us in our old models and patterns. When we recognize this, we can change it (chapter 8). Professionally, we are constantly inundated by information. Competition is ever-present, 24 hours a day. Our mental ability to recognize and then act upon change seems more important than ever today. Obviously we are surrounded by constant changes in the interdependent global market place. As the world constantly alters and adapts, we must as well. Recognizing the trends and changes is what is needed to survive and prosper. Examples from the emergence and decline of the dot.coms were noted. So many companies jumped onto the dot.com bandwagon, but there was a purge, and the ones that survived and now prosper, are the ones that adapted and continued to alter their products and services: they recognized the change. Many did not, and went out of business. The Internet has highly become a "mail order" pathway, for viewing and ordering many products.
One way to deal with this among many in this book:
Zooming in and Zooming out:
As multi-tasking becomes more common-place and the market and lifestyle pace increases, the concept of "zooming in and zooming out" is one concept that can make our personal and professional lives easier, more-fulfilling, and more productive. "Zooming in and out" addresses the need to overcome obstacles that now make our our world difficult. These obstacles have always existed for humans. The ability to focus and address details - without letting them bog us down and/or cause us to lose sight of our over-all objectives.
Three contemporary case studies were conducted on people we are familiar with. Oprah Winfrey, Howard Schulz of Starbucks Coffee, and Andy Grove, the former CEO of Intel. All of these people created a product(s). These were created from ideas. This may sound cliche, but it's the way it is. Starbucks: the unique coffee (consumer) experience. Who in the world would think this would work back in the early 1990s? I honestly didn't. Oprah: transforming the influence of the Talk Show by positivity, individuality, over-coming obstacles and awareness. Apple, moving to the ipod.
Oprah Winfrey's case study was quite powerful and moving. She grew up in poor, rural Mississippi, without indoor water and electricity. Raised by her grandmother initially. Abused by male friends and family, and sent to a juvenile detention center at 13. At the start of her career as a co-anchor, she was told she didn't have the looks. The case study reinforces the idea that she became what she's become, not by following or conforming to the mold, but by breaking it. Her Book Club and talk show focus on themes of individuality, empowerment, and achievement.
The "Power of Impossible Thinking" is a contemporary and highly relevant book. It's neuro-science approach tells us how to identify our outdated models, recognize the limits of them, and the benefits and power of changing and utilizing new models. This is a great book that deserves more attention.
Awesome!.......2006-03-17
Excellent book! These guys have it together. This book provides new ways of thinking and troubleshooting problems. If you are in the decision making and problem solving arena, you need this read to help come up with a solution.

Required reading for life, possibly the best book ever on personal achievment.......2007-10-12
A good friend of mine recommended this book to me with much praise. So I found it on amazon used section listed for $0.01, which came out to about $4 with shipping. You might be thinking who cares how much I was able to pick this book up for.. THIS BOOK IS WORTH MUCH MUCH MORE! If everything in these pages are considered and used, there is not a price that can be put on it.
Life would be so much easier if all the knowledge and principles in these pages where second nature at an early age. The good news is that you are here now reading the reviews and likely to pick this book up like I did and buy it.
Out of all the books I have read all my life this is definitely in the top ten. If you think the bible is important to read, I would put this one right beside it if not in a more accessible place.
Anthony does a terrific job organizing his writing and making his concepts clear and understandable. There are many guidelines, rules, and strategies that can help you improve your life and ready you for what is to come next in your life.
People pay ridiculous amounts of money to find the secret success formula for this or that or the next thing.. and its all here for the taking.. Heck, its likely at the library for nothing. But this book is like a bible for life. A bible for the mind and the way to do and achieve.
Keep in mind that no book is going to kick you in the [...] every day to make decisions and take action, you need a wife or a mentor for that :)
This is however is a fantastic place to start. You will be glad you did!
"Unlimited Power: The way to peak personal achievement"
I LOVED THE BOOK...EXCEPT FOR ONE THING.......2007-07-03
Tony Robbins has good advice. In fact when one of my employees moves into a supervisor or sales role I give them a copy of one of his books. And I credit his motivational books with some of my financial success. However he misses one point that all motivational speakers miss: no not everyone succeed no matter how much you pump them up. Some people lack the basic skills. For example to suceed in a given business you need motivation but you also need
1. Experience in that industry, extensive experience.
2. An innovative idea.
3. Working capital.
If you lack one or more of these then all the motivation in the world won't help you.
The Best of Its Kind.......2007-07-03
Quite possibly the most important book I have ever read. Robbins touches on every element necessary for success, no matter how you as an individual define success. Unlike the Robert Greene books (don't get me wrong, I love those, too!), Robbins actually delves into morals and ethics rather than trying to remove them from the equation. This was key for me, as I don't think I could stomach some of the tactics advised by Greene. Knowing how far you're willing to go (and the price you're willing to pay to get there) is paramount, and Robbins examines this in great detail.
Important, well-done, and inspirational.......2007-04-30
I read this book originally years ago. I owned a bookstore at the time, and it kept falling off the bookshelf, so the last time I picked it up to put it back, I got the message and decided I should read it.
I had become a Hypnotherapist right about that time, and I was very interested in NLP, an associated therapeutic tool. I had read a couple of NLP books by the formulators of that work, and honestly, I wasn't really impressed with the presentation of the concepts.
When I read Tony's book which is very much about applied NLP, I found it one of the "meatiest" self-help books I had ever read, as well as one of the most motivational. I had yellow pieces of paper stuck in every 5 pages or so, and it was so highlighted that it was hard to separate the highlights from the plain text. I devoured that book.
Tony's message is one I fully embrace today. I believe deeply in the limitlessness of the human mind and spirit, which ultimately is this book's message.
If you are in a helping profession, or you want to be, or if you life is simply not working, please consider reading this book. If you open your mind to the possibility that you can have whatever you want or become the person you want to be, then reading this book, will propel you on that journey.
A True Inspiration! .......2007-02-25
This book has truly inspired me and has allowed me to see things in a whole new light. I was given a copy of this book to read 4 months ago and it has truly changed my entire thinking pattern. I no longer have a grim outlook on life. I find myself living my life more joyously and realizing the potential I have within and I truly thank this book along with Neale Donald Walsch's Conversation with God - Book 1, for allowing me to see things from a totally different perspective. This book is an excellent follow-up to Walsch's Conversations with God - Book 1 and I truly recommend this book!

Buy an A4 notepad & pen FIRST - Then GET this book!!.......2007-10-05
Once you discover a really good book that works well & easy for you, all you want to do is RAVE about it!! With this outstanding book from one of America's greats - Brian's Tracy, why not? It really "does exactly as it says on the label" (or front cover in this case.)
You only have to briefly scan all of the reviews below to see that this is a powerful book that works. His message in simple & obvious, but with this book Brian shows you why & how so many of us don't or can't succeed in our ambitions to be happy & successful, when it is the right of everyone to enjoy life to the full.
If you've read his other book "GOALS!" first, then don't despair. This book has exactly the same message but goes much deeper into the workings of how health, wealth, happiness & peace of mind can all be achieved, providing you with a dearth of inspiration & motivation to try it out instantly & get going straight way.
This book is a little larger & a little harder going than "Goals!", only in that the chapters aren't broken down into convenient sections where you can pause & take a breath/ Nonetheless, it is written in such an enthusiastic way that keeps you interested all the way.
This ought to be the very last book you buy on the subject, but before you read (& more importantly re-read) it, please make sure you have a fresh note-book (preferably A4) & pen to hand. The book is jam packed with all the essential information to kick you off in the right direction the minute you start reading.
If you've got this far already then you need this book, look no further, your intuition was right in looking here. You won't be disappointed. It's quite a long book but with a little perseverance, you too will be glad you bought & read it. Check out the Amazon sales ranking to see how high this book is valued by thousands of likeminded customers.
I wish I could give this book ten stars!.......2007-09-02
I wish I could give this book ten stars! I've read most of the great motivational books - Napolean Hill's Think and Grow Rich and Master Keys to Riches, and Norman Vincent Peal's Positive Mental Attitude, plus dozens more, but this book summarizes them all. If you are looking for a quick fix, this book is not it. It is a book which will make you think, examine, question. Take it in small bites. My volume is underlined, starred, notes in the margins. This is a great summary of the best of the best. If you are in a hurry to reach your goals, this is the book you need to start with. However, it is NOT a fast process.
If you truly wish to turn your life around, this is the book for you. If you are not sure of where you want to go, this is the book for you. If you feel that YOU are different, that LIFE has given you some bad blows, this is the book for you. START HERE!
Mr. Tracy will take you by the hand. Help you to eliminate your excuses. Help you to examine your true goals. Help you to lay out your plans. He will not let you make exuses but will hold up the mirror of self examination so you can see where you are fooling yourself (but no one else, really). He will help you face YOUR truth, but will also kindly provide the path you seek to a better life.
I am planning to buy this book for all of my employees, although I'm not sure all of them will "get it." You make your own life; you are responsible for where you are right now...and for where you will be in the future. I am also planning to contact Mr. Tracy to see if he will be a guest speaker at my organization.
Folks, if you can buy only one book, then this is the one. I've read most of the other major players....Hill, Stone, Peale, Mandigo, Clawson, Collins....and they're all great. Many of them are at your local library. But for the very small price of this book, I recommend that you buy Maximum Achievement so that you, too, can underline, write, reread, make notes, and totally consume this book. This is not a paid advertisement. I have never met Mr. Tracy nor have ever read any of his other books (however, I intend to now).
If you want to make the most of your life, this is the book which will head you down that road.
Success Manual.......2007-08-28
This book covers an array of subjects but in essence it's a book for anyone looking at achieving success in life.
LIFE CHANGING BOOK.......2007-04-17
I've read plenty of self-help books but I've never had a book make such a huge impact on my life. Brian does a great job of showing you simple strategies to help change every aspect of your life. My book is highlighted throughout and I wouldn't take anything for it. It is my self-help bible!
Inspiring and uplifting book.......2007-04-05
This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Words simply cannot describe how truly valuable a book like this is. Brian Tracy helps you in defining your goals and meeting them. I believe that this book ranks among best personal achievement and self improvement manual on the market.
This is an outstanding book that is presented in a clear and precise way that is beneficial to anyone in any walk of life. This book motivates, stimulates and helps you focus your mind on meeting your goals. Brian Tracey helps you in defining and refining your goals and guides you on how to effectively achieve them. He methodically guides you to organize your thoughts, think positively and then get into the action habit.
It is truly an inspiring and uplifting book. Therefore if you feel lost in life, with no direction and need upliftment, Brian Tracey will help you to discover what your ultimate passion in life is, thus helping to start living meaningful and purposeful life.
I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about changing their life for the better. However, the book can only provide guidance and it is up to the reader to put into practice the advice and wisdom from this fantastic book.

Reading this was a series of WOW moments.......2006-07-26
Instead of the usual business approach, this is more a "new age" or "self-help" perspective. For someone who has lived by "If you want it done right, do it yourself", this was like a 2x4 to my head. Many practical tools. Your reading time should be well spent!
Solid Networking Guide.......2005-05-21
Donna Fisher has done an excellent job of pinning down the essentials to networking. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to edge in the business or social field.
Great Way to Learn the Basics.......2005-05-14
As I talk to more and more people, it becomes obvious that most of them have a vague idea of what networking is, but really no idea how to get started or how to be effective. This book gives a great starting place. The assessment allows the reader to take a hard look at where they are now and then using the steps, to make a plan for improving their life and career. I would highly recommend this for people who want to get started on improving their networking skills.
False reviews.......2005-04-01
To answer one reviewers question: I've see these "5 star" reviewers in every networking title sold (see all of their reviews listed). Has Rick Frishman ever reviewed a networking book he didn't rave about? Better still, has he ever read any of the books he reviews? These "reviewers" have written their own networking books and are hawking each other's books, deceiving potential buyers. I guess this is their form of networking. A potential book buyer should disregard what they say.
Semi-useful, but nothing new .......2004-11-01
If you've read at least one networking book, you most likely will find little, if anything, useful from this one. I must admit there are some helpful hints such as: 1) Avoid the Lone Ranger mentality, 2) Give without expecting anything in return, 3) Gain value from every contact, 4) Become an active and perceptive listener, & 5) The 3 Foot Rule.
These(like most of the 59 "secrets") present a somewhat hackneyed approach to networking. Although worth a look-see, I would recommend a check out from the library for this title, rather than wasting your mula.

"The ability to visually capture and organize thoughts and ideas has enabled millions of people around the world to do their work with greater creativity and productivity, run their businesses more strategically, and manage complex projects more efficiently--even map out a sales process or new product roll-out. Nast's very practical, readable book will get you quickly up to speed on one of the simplest but most powerful ways to organize your ideas, your work, and yourself."
--Mike Jetter, cofounder and CTO, Mindjet Corporation, coauthor, The Cancer Code
"The principles Nast writes about in Idea Mapping have become a staple for me over the past fourteen years. I was turned onto the concept of idea mapping in 1992 and have been a student and practitioner ever since. This has absolutely transformed the way I learn, design learning, and prepare for public speaking. I have never been more confident in my recall, knowing the content is nicely tucked away in my brain as it was designed to be. Get ready for a life-changing experience for yourself and those you influence."

1 Map Vs. 50 Pages... I'll take 1 Visually Appealing Map.......2007-08-22
I've been impressed by Jamie Nast and her philosophy of Idea Mapping. I especially like the concept that you can put a complex idea on one page, and Jamie is running with it. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see a business plan on one gorgeous map than 50 droning pages. I'm also happy that Jamie considers software a legitimate venue for mapping (I especially like MindManager, which Jamie endorses at her website). A resource idea mappers at all levels need to checkout.

I have to assimilate volumes of information, and mapping the info out in the manner taught by this book is the perfect way to do it. This use of the technique is only one of the applications described in the book.

The book takes an evolutionary approach to teaching mapping. Concepts and rules are introduced, examples given and lessons reinforced - then on to the next concept. Happily it's in plain English, with no business consultant-speak, and is easy to read and comprehend. Rules are introduced at the beginning to help the novice get started - later on these are overturned as experts are encouraged to be flexible and take account of the situations they are in and the purpose of their maps.
The focus is very much on business applications of the tool. Guidance is given on how to approach creativ
