Book Description

She's got the rock, so when does happily ever after kick in?

At long last, Ashley Stockingdale--patent attorney, fasionista, and homeowner--can finally add "fiancee" to her spirited resume. That means the next four months will be a dizzying and decadent waltz through aisles of Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, Sheridan sheets, Kate Spade place settings, and Oneida flatware. Well...maybe not.

For starters, the HR department has hired Ashley's ex-boyfriend (yep, the one who ran off to India with that other woman) as the new director of software. And now her fiance is starting to sound crazy--something about moving across country, to Philadelphia of all places. Worst of all, right before her eyes, Scarlett-I-need-some-Prozac O'Hara is hijacking her wedding plans!

Life for our heroine is spinning from out of control to downright confusing. But whether she makes it to the end of the aisle or not, she'll never be at a loss for drama!

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious.......2007-03-19

As someone who is planning a wedding. I got a huge kick out of this book. It made me laugh out loud and is very discriptive i could just imagine the characters. In some aspects i could see myself in this character. I give this book two thumbs up for anyone who is looking for a good book to entertain themselves with.

2 out of 5 stars an odd one.......2007-03-19

Put simply, it's an odd mixture of current fashion, fiance drama, and - get this one - god.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny.......2007-02-14

This book was laugh out loud funny. Kristin Billerbeck does a great job of writing great chick lit without compromising Christian standards. If you thought that Erin was a handful in the 2nd book, just wait until you get a load of Kevin's sister, Ashley. This book is fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-12-26

Great book! I just read it cover to cover in one sitting because I couldn't put it down! Ashley is a great character and it's nice to read a chick book that has main characters with christian values.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Kristin Billerbeck!.......2006-07-13

I am so bummed that this is the end of the series because this is a great one!!! Kristen has gotten me so hooked on reading the "Christian chick Lit" that I've read all of her books so far!! I don't do that normally because I like to make sure there is more when reading an authors book so I don't run out of things to read. I couldn't do that with her stuff.

This book was hard to find in the local stores. One said it would be in within a week of ordering it...2 WEEKS later nothing!!! I decided if I was going to wait I would wait while anticipating a package so I ordered this from Amazon on a Tuesday and received it on Friday! Guess who called on Saturday to tell me the book was in.....

Great, funny, witty read! Read them all!!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars VERY HELPFUL BOOK!.......2007-01-06

I had to take a college Statistics 2 class and this book was much easier to understand than the textbook. This book became attached to me during the class. For anyone having to take a statistics class (even high school level), I highly recommend getting this book to have as a reference guide. The book even shows you how to do the formulas in excel to get the answers needed to questions!

3 out of 5 stars Okay reference. Too many errors........2006-10-29

This book is structured more like a reference than a text. As such, it will be helpful as a second reference source to an actual text book to help clarify concepts. There are many better books out there for instruction.

My biggest problem with this book is the number of errors in the examples. It seems like you can't go 10 pages without running into an error that make you go, "wait a minute... didn't he just say... but now he's saying...???"

A very good example of such an error is on page 239, example 12-1, where the author states a problem that involves a proportion at 60%, then shows the math at 65%. This book is full of these kinds of issues and will, at times, completely throw you off track.

1 out of 5 stars This book will utterly confuse you.......2006-06-05

Do yourself a favor and avoid this book. The book does not explain, it only documents, with heavy and unnecessary use of terminology. If you want to learn and understand, get Bartz's "Basic Statistical Concepts," an excellent book in it's 4th edition.

2 out of 5 stars If you are looking for practical instruction skip this book.......2006-04-28

If you are studying for the GMAT or a similar test, this book might be helpful. However, if you are struggling with a problem and need practical advice on what test to use and how to perform it, pass this book by. I bought this book in part because it said on the cover that it would tell you how to use Excel for statistic. Forget that unless you think being told "this can be done on Excel" is how-to instructions.

4 out of 5 stars Good for teachers/tutors.......2006-04-14

I just picked up this book tonight. It looks great for my purposes, as a math/stats tutor. I am always looking for books with lots of practice questions (and the nice thing is, this book includes true/false; multiple choice; short answer etc. -- very handy for testing students' conceptual knowledge) and this one is full of them!

Also, I wanted a book that the tutors I train could use as a manual -- something without extra fluff, but with enough meat to make the concepts clear. I think this book is well-suited to that purpose: giving to mathematically-oriented people (like my tutors) who maybe don't have a lot of statistics knowledge and expecting them to be able to pick the material up easily.

What is also helpful is the reference to the TI-83/84 calculators and the minitab output. As someone who learned how to do all this by hand, I sometimes find it disorienting to have to rely on computer output with no work on my part (since by doing the calculations, I actually understood what I was computing). It's helpful to have these alternate methods addressed and explained, as I suppose this technology is an evil I'm just going to have to get used to! :)

It looks like the complaints about the first edition have been addressed in this new second edition. The chapter titles are quite clear. (However, I don't mind accurate chapter titles, even if dry or intimidating, since my staff will be using it as a reference -- and we actually DO need to be able to look up material according to the technical terms, and use ths vocabulary to help other students!)

Also, previous reviewers have mentioned that the book left out some key topics such as F-tests, ANOVA etc. These topics are all in the second edition. So, as far as I can tell, this book should cover most intro level Stats I courses (at our Canadian universities, at least!) The link to the table of contents appears to show the first edition TOC. The second edition has an extra chapter (#15) which covers:

15-1 Comparing population means graphically
15-2 Some Terminology associated with ANOVA
15-3 The Hypothesis test of ANOVA
15-4 The Test Statistic and the F Distribution
15-5 One-Way or Single-Factor ANOVA Tests

I do agree that it's a bit (and perhaps only a bit) less dense than a textbook, but I do like the "get right to the heart of it" approach to the material, as well as the loads of practice questions. But again, I'm looking for something that people who are already math-literate can use as a quick reference/teaching guide. The language is not exactly lay-person friendly, but as a curriculum writer myself, I know that's always a trade-off. You want to be true to the language and vocabulary of the material you're explaining, but at the same time, you're often dealing with an audience that doesn't really care too much about being that precise, so long as they get the idea. So what do you do? :) Jaisingh has chosen to keep more traditional (yes, technical/boring) definitions for these concepts for the most part. I don't condemn him for it, but people looking for definitions that don't require thought probably will. Students who are comfortable with math/English should not have significant difficulties tackling this book. Those who are "utterly confused" will likely not find this book as "hand-holding" as perhaps they'd like. Do face this book preparing to actually learn something, and learn the proper terminology for it and a bit of rigor. There are *tons* of explanations of terms and definitions throughout the book. And, in their attempt to be accurate, they do sacrifice some layperson-friendliness.

If I could add one extra topic to this book it would be elementary combinatorics so that students could more easily compute probabilities that relied upon permutations or combinations to count the number of ways an event can happen vs. the number of events in the sample space. I know that this isn't always a part of a Stats class, but here in Ontario, Canada, our senior high school stats class ("Data Managment") involves a significant portion of this material. With this small addition, this book would cover our entire Gr. 12 Data Management course, and I wouldn't need another book to deal with combinatorics.

Statistics tutors looking for something to add to their collection should definitely consider this book. I think it will be useful for tutoring both university Stats I as well as AP Statistics. What I will find most useful is all the definitions (which I suspect I'll have to break down, word-for-word and explain to the students, but at least they're there as a good reference), theorems and practice questions. I would not expect most of my students to be able to teach themselves from this book, but rather to be taught by a tutor using this book. The price is quite reasonable for the content and practice questions, and I have already warned one student who will be taking her Stats I next year at university that I expect her to buy this book. :)

If you really are utterly confused by math, academic-style prose and/or statistics, then this is probably not the book to *teach* yourself with, but if you are taking a stats course, the problems alone should be worth the investment as extra practice.

Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, when you buy an expensive camera the exposure skills DO NOT COME with it!

When you buy an expensive GUITAR, you KNOW that playing skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAR, you KNOW that driving skills DO NOT COME with it! When you buy an expensive CAMERA, why, then, do you NOT KNOW that exposure skills DO NOT COME with it?

This book teaches the beginning Digital/35mm photographer (9th grade level) the simple and practical methods of correctly exposing a subject. This is also the world's first Digital Zone System book that addresses the application of the Zone System of exposure using current manual digital cameras including many of today's D-Slrs. The book covers in detail the applications of a camera's meter, an off-camera spot meter, an off-camera incident meter, and easy-to-remember techniques for exposing sunlit to moonlit subjects without a meter. The book uses Farzad's simplified 5-stop technique using 100 ISO color slide or Digital Film as its base, but the same techniques can be applied to Black and White, as well as color negative film with different ISOs. Since all the thinking is done before the photographer takes the picture, the book is ideal for this millennium's 35mm photographers that use one-hour processing labs. Since all the exposure decisions are made ahead of time (before the picture is taken), the technique saves the digital photographer many hours that he or she would waste behind the computer trying to figure out what he/she wanted to capture in the first place. The highest level of math required from the reader to understand this book, is to be able to multiply and divide a number by two. Also in the fourth edition (with the Lotus flower on the cover), a special calibration section is added to the end of the book for all those photographers who have spent a few thousand dollars on their D-Slr and are consistently getting underexposed and unacceptable images.

The fourth edition also includes Digital footnotes and assignments for photographers using manual digital cameras. The book also includes Digital as well as 35mm exposure cheat sheets for Canon EOS 5D, Canon EOS 10D, Canon EOS 20D, Canon EOS 30D, Canon EOS A2/A2e, Canon EOS Rebel TI, Canon EOS Rebel XT, Canon EOS Rebel Xti, Canon PowerShot G5, FujiFilm FinePix S7000, Minolta Maxxum 5, Minolta Maxxum 7, Minolta Maxxum 9, Minolta Maxxum STSi, Nikon Coolpix 990, Nikon Coolpix 5700, Nikon Coolpix 8700, Nikon D50, Nikon D70, Nikon D80, Nikon D200, Nikon F4, Nikon F5, Nikon F100, Nikon N70, Nikon N90, Nikon N6006, Nikon N8008s, Pentax *ist-D, Pentax 645N, Pentax MZS, Pentax PZ1P, and Sony DSC-F717.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful Book to begin Photography........2007-08-24

The Confused Photographer's Guide to Photographic Exposure and the Simplified Zone System

I am a beginner to the world of photography. The reason for me to buy this book was the difficulty with getting a correct exposure to suit different lighting conditions and objects.
After reading this book now I am able to get a correct exposure and make it quickly.

This is the best book I read which is intended for beginners as well.Book provides a lot of details in a very easy to understand format.Ample graphics are used and the Author gradually takes the reader from very basic exposure techniques to more advanced ways.Further he provides some quick steps as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to de-mystify the field of exposure.......2007-06-03

I ordered this book as I felt that I was getting nowhere with my undrrstanding of exposure. Over the past few months I agonized over which ones to buy and after much searching I have to say that this book is up there at the top.

The author has also been generous enough to answer my questions on his system and provided me with some answers that are worth their weight in gold!

Thank you Bahman for de-mystifying the subject of exposure and thank you for helping me on the road to improving my photography!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-14

This book assumes that you know very little and then takes you through to teaching advanced techniques in getting the correct exposure every time. A well written book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow -- This is the book to have on the subject of Zone Systems.......2007-05-12

I was familiar with the Zone System, which is used to draw out more detail in a photograph. In fact, you can find a fantastic description of the process on Wikipedia.

In a print system where you have a white paper that turns black when exposed to light, you expose for the dark parts and use dark room processes to get the light parts.

In a digital system, things are reversed because you have a black starting point that turns white when exposed to light. As such, one exposes for the lighter elements and use digital software to post-process the darker areas.

Things become a little confusing though when you are trying to remember what you're trying to do and you realize your meter isn't giving you the reading you want.

Meters expose to 18% grey. Humans, for some reason, perceive this amount as 50%. That is, if you see black and you see white, what you'd call 50% grey in the middle would actually be reflecting only 18% of the light falling on it. Weird, I know. Anyhow...

Anything you point your camera's meter at, it will try to adjust the tone as 18% grey. As such, you first have to learn to see the tone independent of color. This book teaches you how by showing numerous examples along side of extremes.

Once you're pointing your camera's meter at the right place for the zone system to work, you then have to compensate for your meter not knowing you did that. Once again, the book gives plenty of examples, shows all combinations possible, and teaches you several ways to think about the problem so that you know whether you need to expose more or less and by how much.

To top it off, not all camera models work the same way with notation. For instance, if your camera says +2, does that mean that you are adding two stops to what the meter is reading? Or, are you indicating that the meter is two stops more than what you want? The answer is that it depends based upon your camera, and that's covered too.

Once you've got all the mechanics worked out, the book then covers the zone system and works into more advanced applications of it, and then touches on the artistic aspects.

There's lots of big pictures on sparse pages to specifically reduce confusion and deliberately designed not to overwhelm the reader with details that aren't needed for that example. Conversely, during discussion moments, complete coverage of the topic is provided in a very approachable manner.

Two thumbs up for the author of this book. I wish other authors would cover subject matters as clearly and coherently.

5 out of 5 stars A users review.......2007-02-08

Ask many different photographers for advice and guidance on learning the zone system (as I did) and you will get as many different replies. Also, many books written on the subject unnecessarily complicate their explanations and therefore discourage beginners. Considering that exposure is the most important concept in all of photography, anyone with more than a passing interest and a desire to create beautiful pictures will sooner or later arrive at the door of the zone system. Photography and the zone system go hand-in-hand like red wine and steak. I had purchased at least 4 different books on the subject and still been confused until I read the book by Mr. Farzad. Within 1 hour I suddenly realized how simple it all was and was wondering why it hadn't been explained so simply before this publication! Copiously illustrated with simple diagrams I would defy anyone to not understand the zone system after the first read of this book. For the past 4 years I have been teaching photography at my local college and I use the simple explanations as taught in the book with my students. Within an hour or two, 90% of the class find the zone system it simplicity itself. Do yourself a favor, stop being confused and read this book, your pictures will benefit almost instantly. I would have no reservations at awarding this book 10 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars More than advice - Practical, workable approaches.......2007-07-07

McEwan's writing is very readable and her concrete advice is practical and easily applicable for those in charge of supervision and evaluation. This is not a dull textbook, but a guide to successfully confronting poor quality work with the goal of improving performance. The best piece of advice by far concerns inviting union leaders and representatives to be part of the process. Including all stakeholders is powerful and an example of how effective teaming can result in better teachers for all of our students.
The protocol for Assertive Interventions is easily adaptable to many situations and the advice concerning follow-up meetings and keeping written records invaluable. Suggested group activities are potentially powerful for Faculty Meeting agendas and/or Staff Development strands, especially activities about developing a set of ethical standards for all to be held accountable for following. This book is a tool supervisors will find user-friendly and truly valuable.

Book Description

World's first book written to illustrate the on-camera spot metering technique for 35mm, Digital, and Medium Format photographers:

All types of metering systems used in different cameras (with the exception of the on-camera spotmeter operated by a skilled photographer) use a "cookie-cutter" approach to photographic exposure. What this means is the camera meter measures the various tones of your subject, and then averages all of the tones in order to come up with an overall exposure. Sometimes the overall exposure works and sometimes it doesn't. With this approach, the ball is in the camera's court and in many instances the photographer has no hand in the final look of the image. With on-camera spotmetering, the photographer uses a "tailored" approach to find the correct exposure for a very specific subject. With this approach, the skilled photographer interprets the spotmeter readings from the subject and establishes the correct exposure that captures the desired image (what the eye sees) on film. The consistency and flexibility of the narrow-angled spotmeter makes it the most powerful and versatile exposure tool in existance today. The only catch in using a spotmeter is that the photographer must have the skill to use this powerful tool correctly and effectively. The Confused Photographer's Guide to On-Camera Spotmetering does just that! It is simple, easy-to-follow, and uses a common-sense teaching approach to the material. With more than seventy full-page illustrations, it is designed to get the beginner and the intermediate photographer started in a couple of days. I assume that you have a camera with a built-in spotmetering (partial metering) feature. I also assume that you have a ninth grade education and are willing to learn. To facilitate your learning process, I have included a two page cheat sheets for each of the following cameras: Canon EOS 10D Digital Slr, Canon EOS 20D Digital Slr, Canon EOS 3, Canon EOS A2/A2E, Canon EOS Elan 2E, Canon EOS Elan 7E, Canon EOS Rebel 2000, Canon EOS Rebel Ti/300V, Canon PowerShot G3 Digital, Canon PowerShot G5 Digital, Minolta Maxxum 5, Minolta Maxxum 7, Minolta Maxxum 9, Minolta Maxxum StSi, Nikon CoolPix 990 Digital, Nikon CoolPix 995 Digital, Nikon CoolPix 4500 Digital, Nikon CoolPix 5700 Digital, Nikon Coolpix 5000 Digital, Nikon Coolpix 8700 Digital, Nikon D70 Digital Slr, Nikon F4, Nikon F5, Nikon F100, Nikon N50, Nikon N55, Nikon N60, Nikon N6006, Nikon N65, Nikon N70, Nikon N75, Nikon N80, Nikon N8008s, Nikon N90/N90s, Pentax *ist, Pentax *ist-D Digital SLR, Pentax 645N Medium Format, Pentax MZ-S, Pentax PZ-1P, Pentax ZX-5N, and Sony DSC-F717 Digital. If your camera is not listed here, you will still be able to learn the technique and apply it successfully.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-05

Until I had this book one takes photographs that the camera takes. After reading this book you can be in control. The Author gives a very detailed and easy to understand explanation of why some photographs don't turn out the way we expect them to and tells you how to manipulate the new electronic exposure meters built in to today's cameras.

I recommend this book to all budding photographers. That's the only way to pay tribute to this book and author.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best photo buys I ever made...........2007-05-09

After reading this book, I feel as though a veil has been lifted. I always wondered why my photos, although looking good, just lacked a certain "something". My camera, a Rebel Ti, does not have spot metering. Now I am able to understand how to do spot metering with a partial metering system.

I never thought about "tonal" quality as it applies to a photograph. Now I can look at the computer generated settings and make the necessary manual adjustments to take tone into account.

Very good purchase.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent beginer's guide to understanding exposure.......2007-01-16

I have read this book withing two days.
I am somewhat experienced at taking pictures but this method is easy to follow and remember.

After reading this book I went out during the night to take a picture of a bridge in the city of Warsaw. The picture was perfectly exposed and it did not need any adjustments from its raw settings.

Some people might find that this is sometimes too easy or repetitious but I suppose this is what is needed to get the points accross.

One last word about the excellent tips at the end of the book and the appendices. I really appreciated the tips on how to photograph silhouette of a person, see through cloth lit from behind or fireworks.

I truelly recommend this book if you want to see the light with exposure.

5 out of 5 stars If you never shoot on "manual" this book is for you.......2007-01-15

This book covers in details all one will ever need to know in order to get the correct exposure from the camera. Don't get confused by the title, it's not how to use the spotmeter, it's rather how to evaluate tones and make manual corrections (override the meter reading)to get the proper exposure. Those that don't have the spotmeter (like Canon Rebels), can use the partial metering, just zoom all the way through, to narrow the angle.

Yes this book is oversimplified, as some readers have already stated, so even the second graders would be able to read and understand it :) There are too many explanation and repetition, author even assumes that you have a hard time to make a division by 2 :)

On the other hand I've found analogies (like FedEx and Train examples)very helpful. The book really does what it promises to, to help the reader to understand how to get the correct exposure. No matter what you level is, you will definitely understand the concept, author makes it extremely simple.

I would highly recommend this book for beginners, or those that never shoot on fully manual. For people that understand the 18% gray and know how to override camera settings, there is nothing new.

Compared to other Bahman Farzad book "The Confused Photographer's Guide to Photographic Exposure and the Simplified Zone System". Those books are 98% the same. The later is some what expended version of the "The Confused Photographer's Guide to On-Camera Spotmetering". I would recommend against buying both of those books no need for that. I think the later book (the extended one) is a better choice, as it also has a new and updated edition available on February 2007.

Compared to "Understanding Exposure" by Peterson. Peterson book doesn't go into much details, I felt like author tries to stay away from complex subjects, it's excellent book never the less, but not for beginners. Those books can't be compered directly, since they cater for different audience. For those that never used fully manual, I would recommend to start with Farzad book and then progress to Peterson book.

4 out of 5 stars Excelente for begginers.......2007-01-11

3 out of 5 stars Not for those with a general idea on how to cook.......2006-01-05

I purchased this book from Amazon and received it today, and I am sending it back tomorrow. It is geared towards people who have NO IDEA how to cook, yet the recipes are for food that most college aged students wouldn't eat.

I was looking for a cook book that had general recipes as opposed to specific items (Italian, Spanish, etc) and was hoping a College Student Cookbook would be the best bet. Don't get me wrong this book does cover a wide area of foods but how many college students eat Bean Sprout Julienne?

The book does not have as many recipes as you would expect from a 98 page book. I would really only recommend this to someone who has no idea what they are doing in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars *Must read* when going off to college.......2005-01-24

I'm a freshman in college, and this book really made my first year cooking experiences easy and fun. I especially recommend the breakfast shakes (filling and delicious!), and if you're feeling extra adventurous, go for the meatballs. I made it for a group of friends, with a side of the mashed potatoes, and everyone was really impressed. Wash it all down with home-made chai tea (much better and cheaper than starbucks, believe me!), and you'll have a lot of people asking for seconds!

4 out of 5 stars Good food and lots of laughs..........2003-08-31

This is a cute guide for college kids or new cooks; and while it might not turn every lazy college kid into a gourmet, it'll at least get them laughing and thinking about eating something other than Ramen noodles and cold pizza. I got it as a present just before my junior year, when I was moving off campus to an apartment, and I still use it from time to time.

1 out of 5 stars Great topic, weak book.......2005-09-25

Much of what these authors identify as "Presbyterian" would not be recognizable to any of the earlier generations who owned that label. A low view of Biblical authority, a loose cafeteria view of confessions, a man-centered theology -- that used to be called "Unitarian" not Presbyterian!

More or less a waste.

4 out of 5 stars Tolerance With Love. . . .......2005-02-28

This is a delightful little volume that will remind many of us why we belong to the Presbyterian Church. It has always been more 'comfortable' to belong to a more militaristic style of church, where, regardless of what is stated, the members are expected to fall in line with church doctrine. I believe this freedom, this lack of forcing, has cost the Presbyterian Church many members--those who migrate to fundamentalist churches. The question, then, is whether this has necessarily been a bad thing. Like other reviewers, I particularly liked the chapter on 'whether one is saved' or not.

I believe in the basic inerrancy of the original autographs of the Bible, and certainly believe that a number of modern translations are distorting the word. A parallel Bible will illustrate it. Again, as a Presbyterian, I believe each individual should decide. This book perhaps strays somewhat on the 'liberal' side of that debate for me.

Don't dismiss it out of hand, however. There is valuable information here, regardless of what the Minister reviewer states. Again, our freedom to differ is what does make us special!

1 out of 5 stars Wasted Opportunity.......2004-06-02

Someone really needs to write a book for Reformed Christians that guides them through the landscape of American Christianity. Sadly this book does not accomplish that task. It raises questions, and answers them with a tepid Christology and a watered-down Bible.

American Christianity is an eclectic mix. We worship the Creator from the Declaration of Independence who gives inalienable rights. We practice the piety of WWJD bracelets echoing the liberal Christianity of Charles Sheldon. We embrace the Jesus of Mel Gibson's "Passion" drawn from pre-Vatican II Roman Catholicism. We accept the dispensationalism of the "Left Behind" books. We follow the moral teachings of Veggie Tales and the psychobabble of Norman Vincent Peale and James Dobson. Our politics draws from both Martin Luther King Jr. and Pat Robertson. The forty days of Lent have been replaced by the forty days of Rick Warren's "The Purpose Driven Life." Finally, set the whole thing to a soundtrack of bubble gum praise choruses and Fanny Crosby hymns. Presbyterians wonder if this theological pop culture is all there is. Many wonder who they are and what makes them distinctive.

As Presbyterians we draw upon the historical ecumenical consensus of the faith found in the Scriptures and outlined in texts such as the Nicene Creed. Instead of engaging the culture of the Bible Belt with this consensus, the authors of this book
propose an alternative. They make a distinction between the Jesus of history and the Jesus of faith. Doesn't Jesus proclaim that he is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)? The authors attribute it to the anti-Semitism of the early church (pg 72). Then they reinterpret the meaning of the verse. Wherever one finds the way, the truth, and the life, they seem to argue, one finds Jesus (pg 73).

I agree with the authors that the Bible needs to be interpreted. Moreover, I agree that there are some lousy interpretations out there. However, the authors do not engage those who interpret the Bible differently. Rather they merely rail against those who interpret the Bible literally. The authors engage in rhetoric that they themselves find offensive among "neo-evangelicals." For example, they make an argument in favor of "Biblical universalism." They then ask the question, "What then do we make of biblical references to the `fires of hell'?" The response: "We've already noted that literal interpretations of many scriptures are problematic" (pg 39). There is no discussion of the argument on its merits. Rather, those who take the Scriptures seriously concerning hell just don't know how to read the Bible. To make matters worse, the authors then imply that those who accept the traditional notion of hell probably just want to populate it with people they don't like (pg 39).

As a Presbyterian pastor in the Bible Belt, I am constantly encouraging my congregants to move beyond a cultural Christianity to embrace the faith for themselves. Essentially, this book is a hindrance to my efforts. The book is a wasted opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for new Presbyterians.......2004-02-24

Great book! I recently switched from Methodist to Presbyterian through re-affirmation. All through my childhood I recall attending a Presbyterian church even though I was Methodist (go figure)... Anyway, there were a lot of questions I had over the years and searched for answers about being a Presbyterian. THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT!!! It explains everything in great detail and gives scenarios that everyone can relate to. The only slight negative thing I can see in the book is the authors writing style. Perhaps it's me, I don't know... but some of the paragraphs are worded in a way that they run on. You have to re-read a sentence or two again to get what the author is saying.

5 out of 5 stars Being Presbyterian in the Bible Belt.......2003-08-21

It was humorous, but relevant. The author did a good of explaining what I believe as a Presbyterian and addressing issue that come up in a predominately Baptist culture.

Our congregation is using this for a discussion class/Sunday school class for the third time.

    Book Description

In this, the sixth book in Brynie's award-winning 101 QUESTIONS... series, the author answers briefly and honestly the best of the questions about sex and sexuality she collected from hundreds of teenagers over more than three years. The questions range from "What is sexuality?" to "How can I know if I have an organsm?" She reviews what scientific studies have revealed about attractiveness and mate selection, homosexuality, masturbation, the brain activity that evokes sexual responses, and more. She presents statistics on teen sexual activity and points out that teens are choosing NOT to have sex more often than ever before. This is a science book, not a book of advice. It tells young readers what they need to know to better understand their sexuality and to make informed choices about it. The book includes an extensive glossary, list of organizations and publications, and index.
