5 out of 5 stars FREE YOURSELVES FROM ECONOMIC SLAVERY - READ THIS BOOK.......2007-07-06

After reading this book, you will see that you are nothing but an economic slave to the multitudes of businesses who clamor for your dollar each day of each year.

This work shows you how to have more for less and how to have more money while having more at the same time.

Simplify, streamline and downsize and refine your needs is the hallmark of this work. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SUFFER AND DO WITHOUT you just have to revise how you **DO**

My wife brought me this book after she had read it and it changed my entire viewpoint on how we should do things.

After banging our heads against an impenetrable wall to "keep up with the Jonses" and exhausting years of hard earned savings, it was simply time to do something else.

This book illuminated the way for us.

It is an easy read that can be done very quickly. It will show you some things and give you some ideas that may have never occurred to you.

Of course, if you are still caught up in the rat race and live it, then you certianly are not ready for this book.

If you have BEEN in the rat race and have had your measure of success and find that it simply is not enough because you STILL DON'T HAVE ENOUGH then

YOU ARE READY FOR THIS BOOK.

I believe this may be the first time in years - no, it's the second - I've bothered to return a book. I usually find something redeeming about any book I read. Not this time....well, perhaps as kindling....

5 out of 5 stars Superb resource!.......2006-12-30

This book should be renamed The Simplifying Bible! I read this many years ago (probably 15), and it is one of the books that I continue to take off the shelf to re-read. It is also one of the books most borrowed from my shelf. Be prepared to buy a couple of copies, because people will just "forget" to give it back! Excellent writing, and covers every aspect of simplifying your life. Should be required reading for everyone in our consumer-crazy culture. I'm gonna go start reading mine again right now!

5 out of 5 stars Simple Living Bible.......2006-09-14

I signed up for a Barnes and Noble online course on Simple Living that used this book. I checked out a copy of this book from the library (I was already frugal, before buying the book!) and sat down to begin the course. After about five minutes, I realized that there were far too many people signed up for the course. It would take me hours just to read my fellow "classmates" posts. So, in an attempt to bring greater simplicity to my life, I dropped the course! Turned off by the bland cover of the book and its hefty size, I went to return it to the library. In the parking lot of the library, I took one last look at it. It drew me in. Instead of returning it, I have kept it and renewed it several times. The book is now on my wishlist for my birthday next month.

Many of the ideas in the book were familiar to me, but I enjoyed having "amen" moments with the author. On top of what I already knew, I learned much more. I also found that each chapter provided a wealth of references to other resources where I could explore the ideas further. I began to tell my husband that this was the simple living bible. It had all the good advice on how to live a simple and compassionate life.

As for reviewers who had a hard time getting through the book, I would say that it isn't really meant to be read cover-to-cover. I read one chapter at a time, and will refer back to chapters, as needed. I would highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide Full of Ideas - Not a perfect book, however.......2006-08-17

I am in my mid-twenties and a graduate student. I have, for a very long time, wanted to save more money and live a life that is less driven by getting things done and one that is more focused on living life right now and enjoying those things that are important to me. I think a lot of time the right book comes along at the right time in our lives, and for me, this book was it. It provides lots of ideas - some about being just a little more simple and some that are about pretty drastic changes. Another reviewer is right that this is not likely a book that people who want to live very radically simple lives would find valuable. This is for folks who still want electricity, maybe a car, some nice "things," and so on. I found it very readable with lots of ideas, and also a very exciting philosophy - driving home the idea that we lose sight of the point of life - that for most people, it doesn't make sense to work a lot, to get lots of money, to get a bigger house and lots of stuff. Rather, we can be more content (and have a lighter environmental impact) by working only as much as we need to in order to meet the needs that are basic and the needs that are most important to us. Thus, if having a nice car is important, save for that and cut down on expensive clothes. It encourages you to thin of life in terms of tradeoffs. If I work 50 hours a week, I can have a big house, but much less time to live in it or be with family. Is this worth it. It also helps to counter conventional wisdom about the kind of money it takes to live a "decent" life. It challenges assumptions and offers new way to think about things. The book did not come across as preachy to me. I think you can take from it what is helpful in your life - it is like a sourcebook or reference book. Take what works for you and leave the rest. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise.......2003-03-18

I've been on both sides of reorganizations, and this book does HELP. It was especially very good advice when I was younger and just beginning to experience the change that all organizations must go through. I held on to my copy and still look at it now and then to remind myself that I shouldn't fight change, but take it as it comes and make the most of it.

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Reality.......2003-01-31

I am an employee who appreciates reality. This book espouses the importance of personal accountability...for how we work, how we live, how we feel.

The challenge is in doing something right that does not come naturally; proactive rather than reactive. This book made me feel good about how much control I actually do have.

Following the axioms presented will help you step over some tripwires in the minefield of a work-a-day world in the throes of change.

1 out of 5 stars Senior managers will love it, but employees will hate it.......2001-03-25

The tone and messages of the book are such that they will serve to demotivate, rather than inspire, employees. For example:

Message #1: You (the reader) are not senior management. Throughout the book, senior management is described as "the people at the top" and "they." The book immediately sets up a distinction between these two groups - top management, which is moving the company along in response to outside changes, and employees, who are resisting change at every turn.

Message #2: Change is scary, unrelenting, and you (the average person) are naturally not going to like it. And if you weren't scared about change going into the book, you will be after you read it. One of the opening paragraphs reads: "And if today's stress and tension aren't enough to create problems, all a person has to do is consider what the future holds. One close look at what's in store should be enough to worry anyone."

Message #3: You (the reader) are an idiot, and you will persistently resist change unless you wise up to the tips in this book. The book outlines 15 mistakes people usually make in dealing with change. It doesn't offer 15 good ideas for preventing stress due to change, but instead focuses on 15 things you'll probably do wrong unless, of course, you read this book.

On the whole, this book is too simplistic and supplies only minimal rationale for why an employee should change. If you want to get employees to be more open to change, to put their heart into their job, to be more supportive of the company's overall direction, then give them a book that will inspire them. Give them tips for how to be a happier person, both on the job and at home. Talk to them in a positive tone and not a negative one, as this book does. There are many books out there that can accomplish these goals, just not this one.

Why don't zebras get ulcers--or heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases--when people do? In a fascinating look at the science of stress, biologist Robert Sapolsky presents an intriguing case, that people develop such diseases partly because our bodies aren't designed for the constant stresses of a modern-day life--like sitting in daily traffic jams or growing up in poverty. Rather, they seem more built for the kind of short-term stress faced by a zebra--like outrunning a lion.

With wit, graceful writing, and a sprinkling of Far Side cartoons, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers makes understanding the science of stress an adventure in discovery. "This book is a primer about stress, stress-related disease, and the mechanisms of coping with stress. How is it that our bodies can adapt to some stressful emergencies, while other ones make us sick? Why are some of us especially vulnerable to stress-related diseases, and what does that have to do with our personalities?"

Sapolsky, a Stanford University neuroscientist, explores stress's role in heart disease, diabetes, growth retardation, memory loss, and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. He cites tantalizing studies of hyenas, baboons, and rodents, as well as of people of different cultures, to vividly make his points. And Sapolsky concludes with a hopeful chapter, titled "Managing Stress." Although he doesn't subscribe to the school of thought that hope cures all disease, Sapolsky highlights the studies that suggest we do have some control over stress-related ailments, based on how we perceive the stress and the kinds of social support we have.

Book Description

Combining cutting edge research with a healthy dose of humor and practical advice, Sapolsky explains how prolonged stress causes or intensifies mental afflictions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Science even a Poly Sci Major can understand.......2007-09-28

Sapolsky presents a complex subject in language that a most people can understand, right along side the technical text. Thus, this old Poly Sci major finally understands the biology behind stress eating, even if I don't understand all the 12 syllable words in the next sentence. This is the way text books should be written. This is the way other books should be written -- understandable by people of many levels, not just the other specialists.

5 out of 5 stars Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers .......2007-09-27

I agree with DR. Oliver Sachs who said on the back of the book, Dr/Professor Sapolsky is the best writer if physical science today. It is not for the faint of heart. He makes the subjects very clear, but it helps if you already have some science background because he brings you up to date on the current causes of the plagues of modern civilization (stress filled lives leading to the heart, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity etc. problems.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome writing for a text book........2007-07-08

This book was chosen as the text book for a college course I took. It was awesomely written, very factual and easy to understand. And funny... Let me tell ya. I would gladly have read this for recreational purposes, but the fact that it was required to read it and it was so easy made it that much better.

5 out of 5 stars Haven't read yet.......2007-06-27

Got the book quickly but am reading so many other things right now I haven't had a chance to read this one but I'm looking forward to it!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-05-21

Prof. Sapolsky way of teaching makes one feel he is sitting in the classroom at Stanford. This book has the same ambiance.
Glad I own it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of specific tips.......2007-09-27

I thought this was a good book with many specific suggestions on how to simplify your life. One of the tips I used from the book was to put all of our carryout menus in a plastic sheets in one master notebook. That one tip alone was worth the price of the book and has probably saved me hours of searching for misplaced menus over the last year.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-06-16

The book has some fairly interesting tips, but I am glad I purchased it at a garage sale.
Shortly after starting it, I googled both Cris and Connie. Unfortunately, this skewed the
way I viewed the book, as I kept taking everything Cris said/wrote with a huge grain of salt.
Connie's advice was really helpful and cheerful. Sorry, Cris seems bitter and a bit of a hag.
Therefore, the point of this lousy review is to warn anyone else to just READ the book, and
don't do what I did, and become predisposed to disliking one of the authors. It definitely
had a negative impact on what's actually a pretty decent book. It's quite outdated in some
respects, being written in the 80's, but still - interesting.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite simple living book.......2007-02-05

Of the hundreds of this type book I have read (and almost 100 I still own) this is my favorite, the most marked, the most dog-eared. It looks like the old friend that it is.

4 out of 5 stars great simplicity refresher.......2006-03-01

This book did not change my life, but it contained clear cut ways of simplifying. If you are already a hard core simplifier then this book is probably mostly a review. It is best for beginners or for those of us that need to be reminded that less is more. I got a lot out of it and I think you will too.

5 out of 5 stars This book works!.......2005-01-01

This book saved me! I had too much stuff! My 2005 New years resolution was to get rid of so many things. I held on to a train case I never used because my favorite aunt gave it to me. I carried it around for years everytime I moved, and I never used it. I had a closet full of yarn ( I knit and crochet) I gave it away. I only kept a few cashmere skeins. This books covers every room of your home, and even organizing your photos! I almost took an online course from todo-list, but saved myself the $75.00 fee. This is a comprehensive book, and it is organized by daily projects that take an hour a day to do. (sometimes much less time)If you want to make your household run smoothly, and find your things (keys,etc..) get this book!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Teens can organize themselves.......2007-07-23

After reading some of Morgenstern's books on organization for myself, I bought this book for my daughter. She was delighted with it and took it upon herself to redo her room. I think that she did a pretty good job. Her room has greatly improved and this book has given my daughter the confidence that she can keep her area and belongings neat.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL book for teens!.......2007-02-09

Teenagers need to be taught practically how to manage all of their homework. Julie's book does just that. It makes sense, the methods are easy to apply, and it is great when parents and their kids can read the book together. I recently gave a talk to teenagers using the principles of the book and the kids were very receptive. Definitely recommended for any parents with kids of "homework" age!

5 out of 5 stars A great motivator.......2005-05-05

I bought this for my teenage daughter and could see a big improvement after she read it. This book contains information that will help provide the foundation for skills needed throughout her adult life. I only wish that I had found this for my oldest daughter who has since gone off to college. If it didn't have the word "teenager" in it I'd send her a copy.

4 out of 5 stars This book can really help you get organized............2005-03-20

Lately, many teenagers feel like they under the same crunch as their parents to get everything done (school, homework, friends, chores, jobs, etc.), and yet still want free time- and this book can really help you get your work done and still have a life, at the same time. The way that Julie Morgenstern writes this book is different than your typical organizing book- because it helps you to create an organizational system that caters to your personal needs, not someone else's. Julie states that since every teen as different hobbies, interests, activities, etc., their usage of time and the way their bedroom is organized will also be different.

Instead of giving you the same organizing system to use as everybody else, this book gives you a basic five-plan organizational system that you can apply to organizing your bedroom and managing your time better. It also features tons of helpful hints, real-life stories and anecdotes, and more to help you to get organized. Asides from being helpful, these stories and tips are also motivational and inspirational.

So, for all of those teens who have tried countless times to get organized but still find themselves in a mess, this book will definitely help you to get organized and start living your life better and more well-managed.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary.......2005-01-02

Book Description

Men tend to express their anger differently than women do. Research shows men are often more violent and less willing to confront and deal with their emotions than women. Written by a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of male rage, Beyond Anger shows the angry - and miserable - man how to change his life and relationships for the better. This book helps men understand their anger by explaining what the specific symptoms of chronic anger are and by showing angry men how their actions negatively affect family, friends, and coworkers. It helps men control violent feelings by using simple exercises - developed especially for men - to identify when and why anger occurs and by helping them form new habits to prevent anger before it starts. Women, too, will learn essential strategies for understanding and helping the angry men in their lives. Beyond Anger is honest, tough, and real.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-04

This book was written by a Psychologist in my home town which I had the pleasure of his councel in relation to my ex-husband who was a very angry man. This book nor the counceling saved my marriage but it helped my ex see that the problems in his life were due to constant anger boiling below the surface that would quickly with little provocation erupt into rage. The major obstacle is getting "your loved one" to begin reading. Once that is achieved they will relate on many levels with the information in this book. My ex's exact words were, "THIS IS ME .... " He found out the whole world wasn't wrong, just his perception of it.

5 out of 5 stars great read, very helpful.......2006-07-03

I bought the book for my husband and so far he is very impressed by it. He said it hits many valid points about anger in men, and he highly recommends it for any man with an anger problem.

Book Description

A Step-by-Step Guide

Highly sensitive people (HSPs), who make up some 20 percent of the population, are individuals who both enjoy and suffer from a finely tuned neurological system. This condition can be a gift, but, until HSPs master their sensitive nervous systems, they operate in a constant state of overstimulation. Conditions that most of us ignore completely overwhelm the HSP: bright light, loud sounds, and strong smells. More importantly, HSPs are also very sensitive to their internal worlds. They tend to be deeply affected by pain, both emotional and physical. The emotional demands of relationships and inevitable consequences of change often leave them reeling.

If you're a HSP, the most important thing you must learn is how to manage your increased volume of sensory experience, both physical and emotional stimulation. This accessible, practical guide contains strategies that help you master this critical skill. The book starts with a brief description of the highly sensitive person, and then offers a self-examination quiz, which allows you to assess whether you are highly sensitive. Then the book outlines coping techniques specific to the plight of the HSP. You'll learn tips for reducing the influence of provocative sensory experiences, such as excessive light and noise in the home and office. Meditation and relaxation techniques help you to reduce the anxiety caused by heightened sensitivity. Easy-to-follow exercises guide you through the challenges of communicating and interacting with others in both social and intimate relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Non Judgemental, Supportive with Good Suggestions.......2007-08-17

Although this may not be the major work on this topic, this author writes plainly and could even be seen to provide comfort for individuals dealing with high sensitivity. Many students entering adolescence, especially young men, cannot succeed in our large, demanding, overcrowded classrooms and this is the book to give them. Maybe even sit down with them and help them to understand that the combination of what they can control (their diet, amount of intense TV, video games they consume) and what they cannot (school lighting, crowded classrooms, demanding teachers) there is a balance in which they can find success. Highly recommended for parents and teens w/ ADD/ADHD.

5 out of 5 stars EVERTHING I NEED TO KNOW AS A SENSITIVE PERSON IN OUR TENSE WORLD.......2007-08-06

Dr. Zeff has given me the skills I need to manage my sensitivity. His book includes relaxation techniques, getting proper nutrition and exercise for the sensitive person as well as the importance of having adequate "downtime." He shows how to align the mind, body and soul for inner-peace. He also includes practical information for coping at work and in relationships for the HSP. I now realize that I have a choice in life and don't have to be swept away by the currents of our stressed out culture. Thank you Dr. Zeff!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book!.......2007-08-03

I really enjoyed reading Ted Zeff's book and found a great deal of practical coping strategies to deal with overstimulation. Since I've begun using many of the techniques in this book I feel less stressed out! I highly recommend this book for all highly sensitive people. Also family and friends of sensitive people would benefit by reading the book to better understand the HSP.

5 out of 5 stars Creating a Greater Sense of Well Being.......2007-07-30

For those who have been successful in creating a sense of well being from our overstimulating world, this book may not offer any thing new.

However, if you just discovered that you are a Highly Sensitive Person and are having trouble coping with the trait, The HSP Survival Guide by Ted Zeff will give you many suggestions on how to start integrating the trait into your daily life. You will learn how to separate yourself from an overstimulating world and create new rituals and habits for a greater sense well being. For that reason, this book is more than helpful - it is necessary.

Nothing new here. Basic arithmetic. I'm sure most sensitive people have figured out all of these coping strategies long before reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Huge help to my daughter with OCD.......2006-09-07

My daughter (now 12) was diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive disorder at age 9. Given that OCD is an anxiety-type disorder, and my daughter had always had fears and anxieties around certain things, I bought this book. We found it even more helpful than the OCD-specifc books. The etiology of anxiety and OCD are similar, and this book helps the child evoke the power of their own though process. By becoming the "boss" of their thoughts, they can reduce the power of their anxieties/obsessions. Basically, it takes the foundation of cognitive-behavior therapy and puts it into a kid-friendly context. Read the opening "Letter to Kids with Anxiety" to your kid. That's what I did, and she was hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-09-16

I can attest first-hand that the authors' methods of dealing with situational or specific anxiety in children works. My oldest son, now 14, had many fears, including thunderstorms and severe separation anxiety. We tried traditional "talk" therapy for many years with several different therapists, with no success. We finally found a cognitive therapist who was able to work with him with great success. My middle son has recently been in therapy with Elizabeth Spencer to handle anxiety about sleeping away from home, a problem he continued to have despite talk therapy with three different therapists. Elizabeth was able to get to the meat of my son's anxiety, help him understand why his brain was reacting the way it was, and what to do to overcome it. I'm please to report we had our last appointment today, and my son has had a summer of successful sleepovers and a week-long vacation, all without any anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars A Must read for Parents helping their child deal with Anxiet.......2004-04-26

I have read many books on anxiety as I have a 12 year old who has suffered with Anxiety for years. This book was by far the most useful, and well thought out. It gives you detailed information on what causes anxiety. It also gives you lots of infomation on the different solutions: When to seek professional help, what different medicines do. It includes specific tips to help your child. The use of the Dragon (Your Anxieties) and the Wizard (the smart guy that can help you overcome them) helped explain in my son's terms the feelings he as been having. Its like the light bulb went off for him. The journal keeping has been a huge help to him as he tackles his dragon. This book is a must have for parents of children suffering from Anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars a must for anyone dealing with an anxious child.......2003-10-27

The Anxiety Cure for Kids is an important resource for any parent or mental health professional in dealing with an anxious child. The suggested strategies for handling the "dragon" are very helpful and are easily understood. This book is user friendly.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide/resource for teens...as well as for parents & educators if you get the Leader's Guide too!.......2006-05-27

I find this book, despite its small size & simple layout, to be an excellent guide/resource for teens.

The analogy is interesting. When life is very stressful, it can feel as if you're in a jungle with lots of dangerous tigers --ferocious, hungry, invisible tigers, quietly stalking you.

It covers everything from being assertive to building relationships, taking risks, making decisions, staying healthy, dealing with fears, using positive self-talk, & even growing a funny bone. There is also a "Self-Care for Tiger Bites" section which offers ready "first aid" for teens who need quick relief.

Parents &/or educators who are also interested in this book, are advised to get hold of the Leader's Guide. It is designed to support & enhance the messages of the Student Book with a step-by-step curriculum in a dozen of easy-to-use sessions. It comes with two dozens of reproducible handout masters.

Kudos to the authors for these two excellent guides/resources!

I would strongly recommend readers to check out the publisher's website. They have an extensive repertoire of excellent guides/resources for kids, teens, parents as well as educators.
